Totally agree Daniel. When the band released their EP You Made Me Realise, many of us felt something was changing in music (even if Jesus & Mary Chain had made the foundations). Saw them live some months later and they were fantastic. Loveless is pure genius and an album that has to be included in any list of greatest albums. Happy you finally found the entry to appreciate it.

I love how you have branched out to other kinds of music since I started watching your videos about a year ago. Your original music is going to be awesome, because you listen to lots of different music. I love your music Daniel. Some of your songs play in my head when I am at work. Keep up the good work.
You might want to listen to the band Lush. Their album Deluxe is really good. This Mortal Coil and HIs Name is Alive is also very good.

Awesome to see you getting into bands like My Bloody Valentine and Interpol on your own, which then led to Gang of Four and Bauhaus requests. Shoegaze is one of my favourite genres along with post punk. To me, the best bands, the ones with staying power, are often an acquired taste and may even take years to fully appreciate but you'll never tire of them. For more shoegaze bands, some of whom branched out into other genres or created more unique styles, start with Ride (Seagull, OX4, Black Nite Crash), The Jesus and Mary Chain (Rollercoaster, Head On, Girlfriend) & Lush (Leaves me cold, Sweetness & Light, Bitter).

I was a guitarist who grew up on heavy metal and then became infatuated with folk music for a time. My friend brought over a copy of loveless and left. I remember playing it and becoming enraged. This is not how good music is made I thought to myself. I had yet to experience experimental noise pop like sonic youth yet. But I remember feeling a compulsion to keep putting the album on and listening to it, and one night a friend came over and brought shrooms and we put this on and it all clicked at that point. l understood this was a bonafide masterpiece. I will always be grateful to that friend who challenged what I thought music was supposed to sound like. There's no rules in music! There's no rules in life!

How did they get those sounds ? It was “glassy” never heard anything quite like it. Sonic satisfaction. Daniel I know doing reactions is probably the least important thing for you to do. I was lucky enough to see MBV at the Roskilde festival in 2008, and I still have some tinnitus from it 14 years later. They were LOUD. A friend was standing at a burger stand about 100 metres from the stage; he claims that when MBV hit the first chord of the first song, *everyone* at the burger stand dropped their food in the dirt.

    A R Kane-Haunting
    RIDE-Like a daydream
    PALE SAINTS-Feather frame
And could these tracks be considered the early shoegaze from the 70's early 80's I think they have that vibe?

Yes. The beauty of this album is why I'm *really* surprised you didn't like it from the start, especially given other stuff you do like. You liked Sonic Youth, and I've always thought of this as something lying between the noisier bits of Sonic Youth and the gorgeous lush dreaminess of Cocteau Twins. Hauntingly beautiful noise.

  • @jameshatley9390

What you say about repeated listenings and then being able to hear the music is very key. Great music often doesn't hit you at first but pays off given repeated listenings. You'll also find other music of this genre will come to you more quickly having taken the time. Note: I've previously suggested a song by Wire, which is probably an influence of this band as they cover the exact song I suggested. You might like listening to the original then follow that up with the MBV cover.

I love the way Only Shallow just knocks you over from the first notes. Such a powerful opener. Have you checked out Curve? Check out Fait Accompli or Horror Head from their album Doppleganger. Similar feel, similar breathy vocals, a little more in your face and rhythmic, but I think you might like them.

  • @Katehowe3010

Try Spaceman 3 and specifically Loop. Shoegaze elements, but with irresistible repetition and monstrous riffage. The former are a more laid back proposition, aside from the call to arms of "Revolution". Start with Loop's "Fade Out" masterpiece!

  • @flyingcloud6776
    @flyingcloud6776 Před 2 lety +1

I started with MBV when the follow up album Isn't Anything was out, so I always feel a bit more fond of that. I think on Isn't Anything the dynamics between feedback noise and melody lean a bit more towards melody. I saw them live back in the days and yes, they were extremely loud. The pushed up volume was part of the music. You felt it more than just listening. I even have a Kevin Shields autograph from 2005 (the time "between albums")
I never liked the shoegaze genre in general so much, to me it was a bit too "tame". What I loved was the loud/quiet dynamics and the melodies in the center of the noise, as found in the Jesus & Mary Chain or Dinosaur Jr.
Talking about the Jesus & Mary Chain, I'd start with the first album Psychocandy, or the hit songs "Some candy talking" or "Just like Honey". It was so new and different to everything else in 1985.
As I'm a huge Dinosaur Jr. fan I couldn't say where to start. Maybe with their first "hit" Freakscene. Or with a banger like the song "Alone" with the mighty beautiful guitars. They brought the "prog" guitar solos back to alternative music in the late 80's. Nobody did that at that time, so they kind of co-founded the grunge music of the 90's.

I can quite understand how you wouldn't immediately get into MBV. I have mixed feelings about them (which could have been awkward, as a friend of mine is in their touring band). There is no argument that their sound was ground breaking and I love Only Shallow and Soon. My issue is that they didn't develop the sound. Even when they came back 20-plus years later, the new album sounded like they could have recorded it the next day after Loveless. They also don't have much truck with the concept of a middle eight, so sometimes the verse - chorus - verse - chorus can drag after a while (I think that many of the tracks on Loveless could be a minute or more shorter and still say all they wanted to say).

maybe you should step back from this reaction stuff for a few months and regroup before this develops into a resentful burden. screw the YT algorithms. if you were able to reach this level once you can do it again even better with a clearer focus. who knows maybe the break will lead to other even more challenging interesting and rewarding opportunities or maybe it will just allow for your batteries to recharge...
what ever you decide folks want you to be healthy and happy over more reactions. you are an honest person folks trust. if you need to step back or pause, just do it. no one wants this to become a chore for you. if it is becoming one then the pause is even more important to realize very soon in my opinion. You are maturing and changing everyday. You can't expect the same passion to be available for this over time when so many new opportunities to sow other passions present themselves. Focusing on your next gig will take A LOT of your time and energy. don't try to split the baby as they say. if you can't do it all then some decisions will be necessary and the channel may need to take a recoverable hit to ensure a capable Daniel is the outcome of your endeavors. All the best. With you in spirit no matter what you are working to accomplish.
