WILLOW was EVERYTHING to me as a child. It was the FIRST movie I ever saw in the theater (I was 4.) I've seen it more times than I can remember. I even had the NES game. Just the theme song made my heart swell. It's just like Adam said, it's for everyone. It's a fantasy that's pure and heroic and good. There is evil to be thwarted, there is just enough tension for a kid to get nervous but still know that the good guys will win in the end. And yes...the pigs are always going to be scary. Raziel transforming into all of those animals is still mildly disturbing. But if a 4 year old can watch it and still love it 34 years later...it's something special.

I love Willow. (It came out late '80s, by the way.) I love how it takes its time to get going. If it had been made today, the producers would've been terrified of making the audience wait for so long before the first full-fledged action scene. And I love the score by James Horner. And that fight at the end at the castle is really pretty gritty for a PG movie.
I'm looking forward to this. I know aesthetically it won't be the same. (It's going to have the more smooth TV-series look of the streaming era, than the "real location" film look of the original movie.) But as long as they bring back the James Horner themes, I think I'll be good with it.

The big difference with Willow over all the other fantasy series on their way is that the others are based off of mythologies that were cultural zeitgeists. GoT, LotR, etc. are going to be put up against what came before them. Willow will as well, but the weight of what the original Willow was is nowhere near as heavy. For 90% of people who even saw Willow (myself included), the film was a, "Yeah, I love that film. Super fun and whimsical." but there are very few, "This movie was my everything! It was my Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/Game of Thrones." It doesn't cause fights within the fandom about some silly aspect that people don't agree on. In a way, it's a lot like the Dark Crystal series from 2 years ago. Fond memories, epic scope, but a lack of fanatic ownership. Makes for easy viewing and enjoyment. I have high hopes for this.

  • @SweetSlytherinGirl-Jennifer

The original was a core memory for me as a kid, but I honestly thought I had moved on. Until I saw this trailer. I've seen so many reactions on my social media of people tearing up and crying after watching it and no one having any idea why. It's like we all just had collective repressed memory dredged up and shown to the light and are just overwhelmed by the feeling. It's great and everything Adam says about how the tone of this feels like something we've been missing in fantasy for a long time is on point. So, this is definitely a teaser because they gave no peak into the backstory of what happened once the Witch's daughter and mad mordigan raised the chosen child(Laura) together.
I think the original actress who played the Witch's daughter was in there, so maybe we'll get some exposition from her on what happened to Mordigan. Did they have their own kids together?
Did he die? When and how?
I know Val Kilmer is not well, so I doubt he'll make a cameo appearance.
I did notice, however, that a few og actors returned as well. His bestie and his wife....I adored Wilow's relationship with his wife.
George has known Warwick Davis since he was a child. How awesome is it that George brings him back to where he made him a breakout star of his own...outside the Star Wars world. I don't think I've seen him in anything after the Harry Potter series.
    He's ages graciously.

I was 13 when this movie came out and it was dead center in my wheelhouse at the time. I've watched it more times than I can count. I raised three kids who all watched it in their normal rotation of VHS tapes (along with Labyrinth and Dark Crystal). That was a movie that is still quoted around my house...when my wife "talks" for a cat who is trying to get me to pay attention to them she does the "Dada dada dada" voice of Ranon calling after his father near the beginning of the movie. I'm saying it's a keystone film in my house. I forgot that this series was coming and the Teaser looks great. You know what I especially love about this show in particular: I have no idea where it's going. It's not a prequel, so no one is plot safe; it's not based on books that I know, so no hardcore fans are gonna be pissy over meeting (or not) expectations (looking at you Wheel of Time); it's a NEW, FRESH story that is not just a reboot but a continuation. Reboots are great because of the advent of filmmaking and special effects technology, but that's ALWAYS going to be the case; we'll have reboots for the rest of our lives. But keep doing this; give us fresh stories.

Your reaction, being hit so hard by this trailer, is pretty normal I think among people who had any emotional connection at all with the original movie. Because of what you mentioned - the unique kind of fantasy it presents - and also because... who the heck thought this would EVER happen? I didn't even really think I wanted a sequel, because I didn't think it was even on the table. The fanbase for the original movie, some 35 years later, is tiny. I've never really even heard anyone else IRL talk about it.
But I watched it a lot as a kid, with it being in the permanent rotation of 20-25 movies we had around the house. And seeing that trailer today, out of nowhere -- the music, the first shot of Warwick Davis, the scenery... I got a little emotional myself. Hadn't thought about Willow in years.
This is going to be a great series if the writing holds up; it has everything else working for it in my opinion.

If the show brought back the original actress who played Willow's wife, I'll be a puddle of man tears.
And Warwick's giving some serious "Guy Pearce" face.

I am the right age to have grown up with Willow, loving it and its world, and owned the vhs and later DVDs of this movie. My reaction was somewhat similar to Adams. I was just smiling ear to ear after this dropped. This is my most looked forward to bar none.

No shame in tears guys. Willow is one of my all time favorite movies! It holds a very nostalgic place in my heart as well. Totally an 80's kid here so Willow, Never Ending Story, and Dark Crystal were prob my favorite childhood fantasies before I even knew it was a genre. Sure I later discovered The Hobbit and LOTR, sure I enjoyed GOT (before the disastrous ending), but Willow will forever hold a special place with those others from my childhood. Just like I'm sure you felt, that score really hit my inner child pretty hard. Unashamed joy because that's what it did for us as kids, it brought us joy. While I'm always very skeptical of properties dear to me being resurrected for fear of the original being tarnished, I admit this series looks like it just might do the original justice. That final shot seemed a tad Fellowship of the Ring-ish but I'll keep an open mind. I for one thought Netflix did a great job with the Dark Crystal follow up so here's to hoping. Also for any other bookworms out there there was also a book trilogy written as an official sequel I thought was pretty good. Its called Chronicles of the Shadow War.

After rewatching Willow as an adult I wrote this little poem:
    True Story
    Enchanting tales
    with heart and charm,
    sympathetic characters
and the journeys we join them on.
They may belong to fictional worlds,
    but they help me believe
    in this one.

I watched Willow back when it first came out. I watched again a few years ago... it just happen to be on TV. I'm excited for this, too. I didn't know they were bringing it back. I think I should watch it again before November 30th. The cast and the production quality looks amazing. This is gonna be the awesome taste of fantasy world that we're gonna need to end this year on a high note. I wonder if they're gonna bring Val Kilmer back to make an appearance.

Willow’s realm of fantasy is a near neighbor to Princess Bride, throwing in some Harryhausen creatures along with just a hint of ‘The Black Cauldron’ villainy.
