I've only had one incident in my life where I grabbed my handgun and felt it was necessary. Neither the troublemaker nor my family knew that I was in the ready if things went south. Fortunately, law enforcement arrived in a timely manner to take care of the "problem".
I still had the "problems" head in my sights in case the threat grew (nobody's business but it was ex-boyfriend/stepdaughter crap). The law arrived and they diffused "the problem" with 4 cops and 3 tazer shots. My handgun then went back to its safe place.
That's 90% of gun interactions in the US, and most aren't as bad as what I went through. Still if "the problem" had exhibited serious intent, I was prepared.

Both my sons were given their first gun at age 8. It was a youth sized .22 single shot. We taught them gun safety while letting them hunt rabbits and ground squirrels around my parents farm. Both boys were very mature about the safety and did an excellent job, next gun was a 4-10 single shot where they learned how to hunt pheasant, dove and turkey, both great at that aswell. At 18 yrs old my youngest owns multiple guns including an AR and a beautiful purple heart wood AK, a 9 mm handgun, a 10 gauge shot gun, he is always going to the gun store looking at old and unique guns and enjoys the history and other countries history of all guns. The oldest son carries his .45 ACP in his car for protection and also owns 12 gauge for hunting and won a 20 .22 at an outdoors banquet when he was 15 or so. So including a few guns i own and a couple my husband owns we have quite a few guns in our house. Im more of a Knife girl so i carry a 6 inch Damascus bowie knife in my Jeep lol Oh and my oldest is a girl and while she did learn gun safety and shot guns right along side the boys she doesnt own a gun yet but she is wanting one just for protection, shes just not into them as much as her brothers lol

I am an American man who was a Firearms Instructor for about 4 years. I am making this comment to address some comments made by you guys, I know it is long but if you are curious, feel free to read through it.
To address the question posed around 3:10, no, we do not use Firearms because we "need" to Kill a home intruder. In MOST circumstances regarding Home Invasions, the assailants of the Home Invasions are usually numerous AND Armed with guns of their own. Guns, at least for the good guys, can be thought of as "Force Equalizers" as in "Bad Guy brings Gun, I bring Gun." whether or not the assailant(s) Die or not is entirely their prerogative, the first step in avoiding death in that circumstance is to NOT BREAK INTO SOMEONES HOUSE. Also, no, there is no state where someone simply stepping foot on my LAND can be met with Deadly Force, deadly force can only be used in the commission of what is called a Forcible Felony, so someone trying to break down the door to gain access to my house, someone trying to carjack me, someone trying to kidnap me OR a another person, someone committing an Armed Robbery, and the list goes on an on.
To the question at 8:55 - "Peppering" someone means to hit them numerous times. Whether they die or not is a something that would be determined by each incident on its own and what type of Firearm and Ammunition was used, as well as where those shots landed. For example, I could "pepper" someone by shooting them 12 times with .22LR in the legs, they can survive because .22LR, though still a lethal round not to be taken lightly is significantly less powerful than something like a standard load of 12 gauge Buckshot.
To Address the comment at 15:15 "How often would someone have to use their gun?" There really is no easy answer to this question, but the stats show that Defensive uses of a Firearm far outweigh Offensive uses of Firearms in the United States, many incidents end without a Shot being Fired, the simple presence of a Good Guy with a gun, many times is enough to ward off Violent Criminals. Speaking from my personal experience as someone who lives in the South, I have "used" my Gun defensively against another person twice, neither times did I ever have to fire a Round and Kill somebody, bad guy saw a gun, and hit the road each time. The first time I had to "use" my Gun was when a random black truck pulled into my Rural house that is about 0.5 Miles down a Dirt road and began spamming the horn on his car (which can indicate violent or erratic behavior) so, I walked out with a Glock 19X in hand and he left pretty fast and in a hurry.
The second time, someone was trying to break into my front pasture that houses my 2 Horses in broad Daylight, that guy may (or may not) have actually gotten the gun Pointed at him, but as soon as he realized he was (allegedly) staring down the Barrel of a .45 he left quickly. Here is the kicker, I carry my gun in public everyday, never had I had to brandish or draw my Firearm in Public, and I pray to god that trend continues. The real funny part is I have drawn my Firearm on aggressive Cattle Bulls and other forms of Wildlife on my land more times than I can count, thankfully every time something like that had happened my 1,500 Lumen Strobe light has managed to take the starch out of the Animal being assaulted with it, including a 1,200+ pound Bull.
Home invasion IS a relatively common crime here in the United States, the simple truth of the matter, only the ones that go very wrong make the headlines, many times Assailants are shot and killed or shot at and retreated. If you are curious as to what Gun I carry here in the South of the United States, I carry a Glock 21 .45acp with a Streamlight TLR-1 Weapon Mounted Light, sometimes swapping the Streamlight TLR-1 for my OLight PL-PRO Valkyrie Weapon Mounted Light instead. Good video guys. And thanks for not Quarterbacking U.S. Gun Culture and calling it all inherently bad like many other Europeans do (or those overseas, I am not sure if it is right call New Zealanders European, so excuse my 'Merican ignorance 🤣) , and instead asking completely valid questions.

Add, the US is very large and diverse as you know. Rural use is very different than urban use and varies across states due to laws, crime, and culture. Car jacking for example is far more common in Southern California coast while a bear or mountain lion is going to be more of a concern in the remote mountains. As for outside the home, a family friend shot a guy who was attacking her boyfriend outside their home. He was injured but survived. He tried to sue her but the state found her well within her rights to do what she did. As for storage, if you have young children, ideally you should keep your firearms in a safe. American citizen here. Yes, I have multiple guns, almost entirely for hunting. None for personal defense although it is possible that I could encounter a Mt. Lion or black bear where I live. My guns are very basic. I prefer to never use a firearm for defense against crime and never have had to do so. In my state we have Castle doctrine and stand your ground, both of which mean that someone breaking into my house is at my mercy. My neighbor gave warning to a man advancing on him on open ground on his property and the. Shot that man with a muzzle loader longgun nearly killing that man. The Judge threw the case out .
Shotguns are the most versatile firearm at close range. Handguns which fire shot shells are also very good. He is spot on.
My preference is a baseball bat or hand and a half sword personally . But I’m built for this type of combat. My goal is to subdue, but I also recognize that this may lead to a lawsuit by a surviving assailant, which is a sad consideration to have to deal with. My wife would hope that an intruder would back down from her 9mm. She wouldn’t want to have to take a shot and probably wouldn’t be able to use a bat effectively.

The man put a round through the robber's eye and then put three rounds into the second armed robber. We interviewed him and watched the surveillance video and drove him home. There are some states that assume that anybody that breaks into your occupied house, particularly at night, puts you at risk of death or significant bodily harm. That's (usually) the standard for the use of deadly force. The point is NOT to kill, but to neutralize the threat. If they see you and immediately give up, or run away, they are no longer s threat, and you can't legally shoot.
You are responsible for every round you fire, so overpenetration is a problem as it increases the risk of hitting somebody you don't intend to shoot.

One of the biggest misnomers as well as straw man arguments is that people don't need guns for home defense BECAUSE most break-ins are not done by someone with a gun.
The problem of course with this is that MOST people are not strong and aggressive minded enough to go toe to toe with an individual who is obviously aggressive enough to break into your home to either rob you, rape you, or inflict bodily harm to you.
Guns are the great equalizer for everyone in home defense. It acts as intimidation for those breaking in without a firearm, it allows you to keep distance from an aggressor, and finally it allows a 90 pound woman/man/child to be able to defend themselves against a 200 or more pound man/woman/teenager.
One can NEVER know the mindset of someone breaking into your property. They could be unstable due to mental illness or drugs, they could be vengeful for any number of reasons no one knows about, or they could simply be hungry and desperate to try to steal a few valuable things and then run away.
Either way, a person being broken into has NO IDEA what they are facing, and the gun in a PROPERLY TRAINED person's hands more often than not ELIMINATES bad outcomes for victims of a crime.

In one study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), they found that there are between 500,000 and 3,000,000 uses of firearms a year for defensive purposes and many of those are just showing the firearm.
There have been cases in California where a homeowner with a LEGALLY purchased handgun was arrested for shooting an invader. Something else to understand in the U.S. is that the courts have ruled that the police DON'T have a Constitutional duty to protect people, for that reason many 2A/Gun Rights Activists push for law-abiding citizens to get some sort of home/personal firearm for protection. As we say here "When seconds count the police are minutes away!"

Both times on dangerous dogs, both times I got the dog to walk off, and I never fired. Things are different here. Yard, no, but inside your home, your “castle”, yes, you can fire. Some states are also “stand your ground”. You have no duty to retreat and can defend yourself. And yes, some places are fine, and some have gunplay every day. One day, the Chief of Police had a televised press conference and reminded the public that Colorado had concealed carry permits (for guns), people are allowed to use them for self defense and it was only a matter of time before the people committing these random beatings would find that out the hard way. The beatings stopped that day.

Anybody over here would love to take you to the range and give you the insights you desire, including my wife and I, just ask. South Bend, Indiana. One thing: the key to home defense is shooting a gun you shoot really well because you love to shoot it. You get that way by playing games with it , with your friends, at local clubs. Lots of use in competition makes you headless of noise and recoil eventually. And sure, we carry them often, not necessarily because we have to for pressing fear, but because it’s the unassailable, and defining right of an American. We learned to cherish it from the Brits in a most disagreeable and unforgettable way. Come visit, you look like great people.

You guys were discussing the context under which guns are used in the first half of the video. Guns in most places are always considered lethal force. This means you only employ them when your intent is to destroy the threat completely (ie kill). The legal settings in which you can employ lethal force are typically when you or someone else is at risk of death, grievous bodily harm, and/or rape. You cannot point guns at people without the intent to use them that's brandishing and terroristic threats. You can't use lethal force with the intent of being non-lethal. That's why cops don't shoot to wound either. Because it's lethal force and the situation must call for lethality in order to justify their use.
Now as far as home defense some states have what's called castle doctrine in their laws. The premise is if an invader is attacking your castle (your home) you can assume their also willing to hurt or kill the people inside and employ lethal force against them.

There were 1.23 million violent crimes reported to the FBI in 2022. There are roughly 334 million people in the U.S. so it is highly unlikely you will need to use a firearm and violent crime over all has been going down for years. The issue is though if you need it and dont have it there is no substitute. Kind of like needing a fire extinguisher and not having it.

Every state has their own laws about self-defense. Some states have "castle doctrines" which basically say that your home is your castle and you can defend it as you see fit. Some states favor criminals and self-defense is scrutinized to the most intricate detail. The laws vary from state to state and even town to town on what is allowed, what type of gun you can own, what type of ammo, how much ammo it can hold, etc. The 2nd Amendment to our constitution was put in place primarily due to the attempt of the British to disarm Americans during the Revolutionary War and the forefathers of America saw there needed to be a way to preserve the right of the people to arm themselves against a tyrannical government. Its not really about SELF defense, but more about NATIONAL defense. Self defense is just a byproduct of the right itself.

I was 15 when my father had remarried, and his new wife's ex-husband came to the farm, and I was home alone. He started screaming at the house for dad and Judy to come out and after a couple of minutes he started shooting at the house, I was in my bedroom when bullets came crashing through the walls I rolled off my bed and grabbed my 30-30 that I kept under the bed ( not as some kinda tactical thing, just a storage area) i managed to get to the window as he was reloading and fired 3 quick shots at his truck, which he was hiding behind this was enough to scare him off and it gave me enough time to jump on my crappie little dirt bike and run to town and call the county sherif. I forgot to mention that we didn't have a telephone at the time.
Then when I was in the Navy I lived in one of the worst neighborhoods in Norfolk, Virginia where I had two incidents where someone kicked in the front door of my apartment in the middle of the night both times they were met buy my shotgun but neither time did I have to shoot they turn around and ran straight out with one of those incidences the cops were able to catch him a couple of blocks over the other one I have no idea who the guy was or why he was there
The last incident occurred about 10 years ago I now live in a small community out in the country and I work for the county I had gone to the bank to make change for the woman running the scales at the landfill when someone walked up to my car and tried to rob me in the parking lot of the bank I saw the guy coming he didn't look right so I pulled out my pistol and set it in my lap and when he came up to the door I showed it to him and immediately ran off I called one of the county sheriff's that I know and he was only a mile or so away and was able to find the guy bringing back to ask me if this was the right guy and I was like yeah this is him and he arrested him and the guys doing like did like 5 years for attempted robbery so yeah sometimes you really do need a gun I mean it's not a matter of if you live in the city or anything like that cuz the first incident and the last incident were out in the country in the middle of nowhere cuz you know what they say people are going to people

I would say the main purpose of a firearm is deterrence. Where I live, the first line of defense isn’t seeing the gun. It’s knowing that, if you break into someone’s house and there are people inside (whether you know it or not), they’re allowed to assume you’ve broken in to subject them to serious bodily injury (or worse) and, therefore, are allowed to use deadly force against you the moment you break in.
There is a lot of talk about defensive gun uses going unreported, especially when the crime is stopped without a shot being fired. There could be even more crimes that are nipped in the bud simply because someone who might choose to commit a crime doesn’t want to risk being shot. If they know the people in an area have the tools and legal capacity to fight back, they’ve got some serious motivation to choose a different location or activity.

    1) Police do not prevent crime. They show up when it's over and investigate. You are the first line of defense for your family.
2)While it is unlikely that you will ever need to use a gun to defend your family... it is also unlikely that you'll need a fire extinguisher... but it's a good idea to have both and know how to use both, because if you need it, you NEED IT.
    3) Any weapon is basically a mind-changer. Whether it's an animal or a person threatening you with harm, the object is to change their mind about continuing the attack. However, you need to have the mindset that you will do what is necessary. I don't want to harm you, but if you make me, I will.
    4) You cannot just shoot someone for being on your property. You have to be in fear of injury or death. It's not just the criminal justice system you need to worry about, there's a civil lawsuit risk for wrongful death as well.

@@claregale9011 no, I sleep well at night and live in a fairly nice neighborhood. I’m sure there are some pretty bad areas, especially around the big cities, but it’s pretty safe where I’m at, although very rural. But part of the reason I sleep well is because I know I have my gun if I need it. I may go my whole life and never need it, but i don’t want there to be a day where I need it and I don’t have it. Basically, rather safe than sorry.

@@drakeslocum2564 Exactly. I don't feel unsafe. But I'm also aware and prepared.

@@claregale9011 Where is your home? Have there been invasions/robberies in that area? I've seen many news stories from England that robberies are up. Muggings are up. Heck, UK is trying to ban knives... one of the simplest, oldest of tools (slate rock with chipped edges) because of increased crime.

@@cycleboy8028 we do get robberies , muggings etc especially big cities thugs wanting mobile phones , pick pockets pinching tourist wallets . car theft, But someone entering a home with a knife or gun are extremely rare , most burglaries occur when the occupants are out , most violent crime is gang related or domestic abuse . I'd probably be more inclined to want a gun if society as a whole were armed and the criminals .
