Cheaper motels and hotels are further away from the touristy areas. You may save on room rental, but you will likely lose a bit more for cab fare instead of walking. Remember North America is a large land mass, cities are large and distances between tourist destinations can be notable. Consider tours rather than driving and staying in the more centrally located but more expensive hotels.

Check out the Canadian experience. Our scenery, wildlife, various cultures and ethnic foods, and friendly people. I think your family would really appreciate a Canadian tour.
