- On June 25, 2016 a collection of trail and ultra runners toed the line at the historic Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run running from Squaw Valley to Auburn. Among the 350+ were 4 women vying for the win and a coveted top 10 finish which is recognized annually at this prestigious event:
Magdalena Boulet, a HOKA ONE ONE and GU ENERGY LABS athlete is the returning champion and a mother of one who lives and trains in the East Bay of Northern California. She has an incredible road background including earning a trip to the Olympics in 2008 by placing 2nd at the Olympic Trials. (www.magdaboulet.com/ | @RunBoulet)
Devon Yanko is also a HOKA ONE ONE athlete and has excelled in many different ultra distances. This is her 2nd attempt at the Western States 100 Mile Race with her 1st resulting in a DNF, or Did Not Finish. She is the co-owner of MH Bread & Butter in San Anselmo, CA along with her husband Nathan. (www.devonyanko.com/ | @fast_foodie)
Kaci Lickteig placed 2nd in the 2015 running of the Western States 100 is among the favorites to win it. She hails from Omaha, Nebraska where she works as an in-patient physical therapist. (pixieninjarunning.blogspot.com/ | @ultrarunnerkc)
Anna Mae Flynn of Lake Tahoe, CA is going for her 1st 100 mile attempt after gaining entry via a golden ticket slot at the Lake Sonoma 50 Mile Race in 2016. She is a teacher and a recent ultra athlete. ( / flynnannamae | @annamaeflynn on Instagram, @amflynnrunner on Twitter)

I love that this film wasn't tagged as 'female runners' or the 'women of western states' because... 1) it was an awesome surprise and 2) It supports the idea that it is simply a film about awesome runners. Thanks so much Billy
There could have been some warning about all the weeping though... 😁
It's about Runners ... ALL people without putting them into boxes which is the disease of the times.
@@michalvalta5231 sincere weeping always wake up compation, and this is always good.
i hate the fact that it matters to you how the film is tagged.
@@chughes44 It doesn't really- my comment was simply an observation that usually videos which atypically focus on female characters are tagged as such, and that it was a refreshing change.
My gf and I just completed this endurance hike a few days ago. We did it in 5 days carrying 30-45 lbs. We don’t understand how this run is possible in 24 hours. We were in a lot of pain and felt like we were hustling. We hiked all day every day and set up camp in the dark. It is simply incredible that humans are able to run this so quickly. It is hard to tell on film how gnarly the elevation gains are and even worse, the descents. Mad props to these runners!
I felt the same way when I was backpacking trails thinking “Who runs this”. Then one day I was running it. LOL
My husband has been training for 6 months for the 100 mile run. Which is happening January 19th. I don't know how he does it , but its something in his heart that makes him feel like a different person. He is so happy when he runs. Couldn't be more proud of him for his commitment. He's going to do great.
How did it go? Is he still doing it? Wow
I don't run. I don't know anything about running. However, this had me up for an extra hour trying to find a pair of running shoes. So good.
Almost a year later. Did you end up running?
I bet you are an ultra runner now..
Did you hit them trails?
Please tell me you started running
Did you start running?
Dude, are you kidding me, forget the like button, where's the love button!🙌🏻
forget the thumbs up, wheres the High Five! ?
@@danpt2000Forget the High Five, wheres the b*ner?
Thank you Devon for sharing your story. Too many people are afraid to stand up to the people who do these horrible things to them. Your inner strength is an inspiration to many.
Everyone who finishes 100 miles in 30 hours is a courageous athlete, not just for the race, but for all the thousands of training miles that came before. However to me, a man, there is something especially heroic about these women. This is a great film, and instantly one of my favorites.
Billy you are one of the best things going for the sport of trail running. Watched first 5 minutes on my phone...stopped. This deserves to be watched on the big screen!
Patrick Forsythe atta boy!
Brilliant film. Went to watch it on phone, but waited until could view it on big screen.
im gonna watch some of it while pushing out a log.
Just make sure you don't watch when on a MTB.
This is one of the most incredible films I've ever seen on any sport- let alone ultra running. Holy shiznit!
Wow!! How awesome to see it is about Women running Western States. Thank you! As a aging retired ultra runner, I cried watching this video remembering the joy of running long distances.
Thank you again Billy.
I really like when Devon asks about Magda’s status during the race to know if she’s doing ok. 34:40. I thought that was really cool.
These women man are phenomenal. Started watching this years ago. I come back to it every 6 months or so and get reinspired. Sometimes more often. 2021 I ran my first 1/2 marathon and will keep adding distance.
The community needs more of these classic B.Y Films!
These athletes are truly an inspiration. Thank you for sharing their story.
SPOILERS. While each of these women are awe-inspiring, special props to Devon Yanko: dealt with the no-show by her crew at the first aid station, then powered through the pain and doubt to finish in third place. Plus there are the difficulties she's overcome in her life to get to the start line. Huge respect.
Man I would be livid if my crew never showed up
Totally agree. Devon wasn't missing "stocked stuff" at the first aid station, she was missing her people, her emotional support. But as we saw, even if there is no one there to help, she is able to find the willpower to get herself back home. Bravo Devon!
@@Andomaca1 if you're that reliant on your crew, especially that early in a race, you're mentally weak and shouldn't be running Western States.
@@jeetchatterjee Agree. I don't like how she responded. Yes, this crappy thing happened. But that doesn't mean you get to be an asshole about it and rude to everyone around you. I lost a lot of respect for her.
Why did you put spoilers like that in the comments mate?
Whenever I need a little inspiration to get back on the trail I love to come visit your videos Billy. Always beautiful, often poignant, and a great reminder of all the cool things we humans can do. Thanks!
We all need a person like at 39:00 in our life!
Yeah, she is unbelievably motivating, supportive, encouraging,
It was great to watch this film again after a few years. It's a jewel of the sport.
I am so glad I watched this, so inspiring, and at this phase of my life, I needed to see this, it brought tears! Recently got back into running, its been walk-run in the beginning, then 10K, now training for a Half Marathon and now My friends are talking me into a 100K ultra in Chiang Mai. Now I know I MUST do it. As the runner said, 'this race is life' THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS FILM and for sharing !
THIS! This art, this passion, this female representation. Thank you for inspiring all of us! And thank you to the women, who although so fierce- showed us their vulnerability. And Devon... so real! #speechless
anyone who can even complete this is already a WINNER!!! you need more than strength, stamina, muscle to do such a race, you need MENTAL POWER! WILL! COURAGE! things you can't go tot he gym for and built! anyone who has done a Marathon can probably give you a small glimpse of what this Western States 100 Mile Race is like. It's AMAZING! All of you deserve recognition because ppl like you inspire ppl like me to believe that it is possible
I love that this is just about runners, not male or female runners, just runners. I have so much respect for any person that will toe the line and put themselves to the test...
Billy you have raised the bar this is so much more than a running film, sat here watching it with tears in my eyes. Thank you so much.
Ok. Devon Yanko is my hero now.
Thank You Billy. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Karolina Czeska mine too
This film is powerful. A story about more than the top finishing women at the 2016 Western States. Running is the vehicle but the spirit of the women in this film is truly inspiring. This is a film about determination, battling demons and finding joy while pushing one's body to the limits. This 100 mile race is not just physically immense but a spiritual journey of epic proportions and Billy Yang captures the essence of the race and the runners in a way that moves your heart.
Waking up on the 9th in Europe, it's my birthday. And then seeing this pearl released, couldn't wish for a better gift. Super job Billy!
Jeroen Hoogstad happy (belated) birthday...and thank you!
Thanks for genuinely covering women athletes on their own merit and not in comparison to male athletes or as an afterthought.
Ok, so it's 2021, I am recovering from an injury, and I just re-watched it. I think I got the spirit back.
Well that was beyond beautiful and inspiring. As a doco it has fed the inner runner in me who has been very sadly suppressed. I also want to say that Devon and her story were especially inspirational- what a woman!
Tanya Oliver agree, she's a tour de force
This movie looks ridiculously good. The colors, the runners, the scenery, the lights, everything was glowing.
People at their most vulnerable after grinding themselves down to nothing then finding out they have a lot more inside! You find who you are, I’ve been at that point after races and I find out something new every time I finish it’s the most beautiful and painful experience but you come out the other side better for it.
I'm not sure if considered rude to comment on a video that is over a year old but, horses do still run this race every year. The AERC hosts it. That is how I got into trail running. At 19, I didn't feel it was in my horse's best interest to keep pushing long trail rides (he's still happily being a pet and trotting around on trails for fun if anyone is curious) and I kept seeing videos about these incredible people doing the same distances. You can't watch this and not be impacted! I had no desire to build the bond and training with another horse so, I run. And I love it. Maybe one day, since I won't get to go down that trail with my horse, I'll make it on my feet.
That was such a good movie. Thank you Billy and thank you Magda, Devon, Anna-Mae and Kaci.
Eric Cote they're the best.
Watched this for the second time...and for the second time got teary-eyed--for about the entire time. What a fantastic job you did in portraying these amazing women. Thank you for assimilating this. Thank you for giving credence to the female runners out there. The sport is a beneficiary of your shared passion.
Biiiiiillllly Yannnnnnnnnnnng! You my friend have crushed it! What an epic film. Thanks for doing what you do. Very moving film and that touches more than just trail running.
thank you!
This film is extremely great and captures the personality of each runner with great precision
Inspirational...to the 10th power. What Magda says at the end is pure GOLD.
I'm laughing and crying, this film was epic, I LOVED it! Women supporting women with so much humbleness.
Ps. That pep talk at 40mins- amazing!
Seeing their finish after 18 hrs running...makes me crying....I can feel how grateful and relief when reach the finish line..so proud of you .
I laughed so hard (SNAKE!) and I cried and I was amazed by those incredible women. Thank you Billy, for the stories.
Billy, THANK YOU for making this movie. I’ve been sucked into watching videos about ultra races and feel STARVED for female content. This sated me... for a little while at least. Thanks for being the unofficial recording expert on all runners ultra!!!
Thank you Kate. So honored I got to share their stories!
Thank you Billy for bringing on this amazing video~ Awesome!
i have 3 daughters they are aged 20,16 and 15 and will be getting them to watch this to inspire them to show them the power of women
alan murphy yes. Love that
Simply amazing Billy. Never stop making films; a new fan for life!
Brilliant!! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful film.
Billy you make some fantastic videos my man, I could watch these all day.
I loved every MOMENT of this. Thank you for the inspiration!!!
The lady in green at the 40:00 mark is outstanding! Super motivating talk she gave that runner. I love it.
Heart and Soul. You manage to grip us into Western States and show us the meaning of life. Absolutely BRILLIANT!
I discovered Billy's films just a couple of weeks ago and have been binging on them ever since. This is the best so far. Great story telling. Thank you, Billy, and thank you to the runners, champions all, for sharing your joy and your pain so openly. I am richer for it.
Hi Billy ! I'm a L.A. native now living in the foothills of the NorCal. This is by far one of the best running documentaries I have ever experienced. You capture the feel of being in and around the race. You brought us all closer to what the Western States is like for most of us who will never experience it. Even my non-running wife was drawn in!
Perfect. Love it!
The music chosen as a backdrop plays a significant role in the film...
Loved every minute of this Billy! Truly captures the emotions and spirit of ultra running. Awesome stuff 😀
Thank you Billy for this amazing piece of art!
Speechless Billy... Simply amazing work! Thank you!
Just amazing! Such great stories! Keep the coming Billy, you are awesome!
Love your work Billy. Please never stop sharing these films!
I am so incredibly humbled and inspired watching these incredible women.... thank you for producing and posting this.
Billy--your best yet. Unbelievably powerful video.
Beautiful work Billy. You really poured it all into this one. Thank you.
Can't get enough of your videos- they are so inspirational . Perfect for on the treadmill .
Wow...I’ve just started my journey in ultra running and if this doesn’t inspire you, I have no idea what will. Amazing...
Awesome. Amazing Billy. Thank you for this. Always inspired by you and your videos.
Thank you so much for this film Billy! I've been a fan for a long time now and it's a huge privilege being able to view your work. You are documenting history in the making!
just heading to bed and up pops a notification this video is ready so no bed yet thank u so much billy been looking forward to this for months
Couldn't love this more. Well done. And thank you ladies! 👊
I take inspiration from so many aspects of this fine film. I only hope that, some day, during my own running, I can experience a fraction of the feelings these courageous women experienced during this classic ultra race. Special props to Devon who made such a great comeback, not only in this race, but in other parts of her life. I also found it ironic that the tiny woman from the flatlands of Nebraska smoked the field so convincingly in the high Sierras. Bravo!
Good day to celebrate woman. Thank you for this wonderful film.
Thank you for a wonderful film. Billy you definetely rock!!!
Great job Billy.Absolutely amazing!
Just wanted to thank you for this Billy. Actually found this as a Lights and Motion fan who was only running half marathons, now will be doing my first 50k in May. Your exceptional film making encapsulates the humanity of races as well as the race itself. Selfishly hoping you have a packed 2018!
Billy thank you for this extraordinary, powerful and beautiful documentary
Billy, you have a gift. Thank you for sharing it with the world.
Beautifully done - thanks for sharing! :)
Absolutely and totally brilliant Billy! Inspirational beyond comprehension. There were tears and there was laughter...they were all mine! I am so sharing this link with my friends! You and the crew shot the lights out with this one!
Billy this is the best documentary I have ever seen. You are awesome keep up the good work !!
Awesome! Dropping it on Int. Women's Day, as well!
Woman who did that pep talk about 39 minutes into the video. She should be at all the races! What a total star. I am NOT crying watching this video. 😭
Was that Courtney Dauwalter????
No it’s not her.
Off the charts riveting Billy. Absolutely superb. Congratulations on an amazing piece of work. Also your podcasts are rocking it!
This is great work. Great storytelling and amazing cinematography. Thanks for continually telling stories from the ultra community, Billy!

Ohhhhhh Billy, mate! Thank you once again. A visually and narratively stunning film! Your work never fails to inspire me not only in my running but also in my outlook on life? Thank you for sharing your passion with us all.

So well done! Fantastic work! Nice job, Billy!
Thank you for the film Billy. Well worth the wait. So Inspiring!
THE kind of running film that inspires you. Thanks man! Awesome job!
Thank you for the hard work you do Billy. Quality content and so much behind the scenes required to put something like this together. I particularly enjoyed the footage from Nebraska, which is near & dear to my heart personally. Truly inspirational to watch, including motivating for those of us who've never competed in an ultra, but with aspirations to one day get out there and try.
Not only an incredible document of an amazing event and beautiful stories but also well directed and edited. Thank you for your films!
You did it again Billy. Absolutely fabulous film. Beautiful work.
THANK YOU Billy Yang for sharing this high quality, high production, inspiring documentary FOR FREE. Such generosity and dedication. Feeling the love.
Amazing film Billy! Thank you so much for sharing this story. To call it inspirational would be an understatement!
Wow, these women are incredible and each one just their unique self. Billy, thank you so much for bringing this into my room here in Cairns, Australia. Thank you for all the work you and your team put into this, and thanks to these women and their supporters for showing what is possible. I love Magda's words at the end.
'Just another obstacle that I overcome and life goes on. I think I truly think you come of our all those experiences so much more rich. It doesn't meant that they will get easier, life doesn't get any easier. it is just you are a lot more prepared and equipped to handle all the situations that come at you. an they will whether its running or not. Life happens and you gotta be ready.'
Tanya Griggs when Devon asked if Magda is okay I was inspired
Spectacular film. There is so many aspects involved about running. Great job
You have a gift Billy. Joy, tears, elation, sadness - you captured them all!
