      The British public were never informed on a day to day basis (of course) of the years Prince William flew rescue helicopters, there was one incident when someone informed the press they were shocked when he turned up. It would be interesting to know how many rescue missions he flew - compared to Harry.

    I'm convinced his stories about learning to fly all take place in SIMULATORS. They would never place a multimillion-dollar aircraft in the hands of an idiot, nor would they place their very lives and careers (and his own) there. He knows none of them will refute his stories since careers are at stake. If you've been around the military very much, you know there are always f**kups. H is a fine example. They NEVER change, nor do they learn. NEVER.

    Harry never passed his exam for his helicopter license. He was granted a provisional license where he was allowed to fly in an Apache with a licensed pilot. This is why he was a gunner on the Apache and not the”pilot.” Apaches normally require both people to be pilots and one operates as the gunner. In Harry’s book he claims to be the best most natural helicopter pilot in his class yet he is made a gunner. hrmmmm

    The one thing that stands out the most by your readings is just how sheltered and coddled he was growing up. The palace obviously made him believe he was the most important person in the world. Well, 2nd most important, which then allowed him to have a life long pity party.

    • @pennylando3145
      @pennylando3145 Před rokem +16

      I can certainly understand the view that it was all about the Palace's sheltering and coddling / making him feel important, but I think that's overlooking the fact that a) he was at boarding schools for much of the year and b) he appears to be the only one in his generation of royals that acts this way. Boarding school makes most kids pretty independent and resilient, so I would say that if they failed and the army failed, then we're more likely to be looking at an insurmountable wiring issue in Harry himself.

    I remember that interview when it happened. Commentary that I remember reading was that yeah William cut Harry down a bit and you could see it a bit in a quick cringe but not only did Harry get in his own jibes about Will’s baldness (AS EVER!) they were also, both, very complimentary to each other! The brotherly banter where they both were rolling their eyes at each other, taking shots at each other but both of them also taking turns letting the other one talk, actively listening, nodding, and reacting to what the other was saying, and talking about how the other was smarter but just modest. And people loved it and perceived it as really normal and heartwarming because they were just so clearly at ease and lighthearted with each other! Why he feels the need to rewrite it now and remember it differently is anyone’s guess. And for all the shoddy memory he constantly claims, somehow THIS is crystal clear to him. Like anyone can watch the interview right now at any time and it just doesn’t match up with what he’s written.

    I am enjoying this review series quite a lot - you're intelligent and insightful and the clever quips provide much needed levity (especially in the sections when Harry comes off as especially infuriatingly entitled).
    You've mentioned in this section and I think in another one - that you're not made of stone, you do feel sorry that someone as gullible as Harry is in the mess he is. And I can relate as I'm sure many others can - it feels bad (horrible) to see naive (and often well meaning) people get taken advantage of. However, one's well of compassion dries quite quickly when it comes to people like Harry.

    Oh also - as I'm reflecting on your review of the past few sections - I'm reminded of how you've mentioned that Diana was flawed - human. She faced certain tragedies but I'd like to think for the most she maintained her dignity in the public face.
    One thing that stuck out to me as you mentioned Harry's Apache tantrums was - how deeply incurious he is. One of my favourite parts of your review was your insight that Harry is neither academically gifted nor is he savvy in a worldly way. I remember accounts of Diana not being academically gifted and perhaps Harry took some comfort in knowing bad grades didn't hold her back in life from being great.
    However, here's the difference between Diana and Harry. Harry is a deeply incurious person, whereas Diana I believe was the opposite. Whatever, she might have naturally had some insecurities about her intelligence (like Harry) but she also had grace and humility (unlike Harry). She did care about the various charities she was involved much more beyond the publicity and she had a deep appreciation for scholarliness and - part of her savviness was proof that she enjoyed learning about how the world worked.
    Patton Oswald's daughter told him after his first wife's death (to paraphrase) - 'You're the best memory of your mom'.
    It's such a pity that as the book goes on - Harry's trauma regarding his mother doesn't become all that more manageable (maybe superficially so( - and he refuses to learn from or try to embody the traits of hers that Princess Diana's legacy an enduring one.

  • @blushingsigh
    @blushingsigh Před rokem +7

    This is the latest video I've seen in your review series so I'm bringing up things you've said in the other parts because I 😅 have to get my thoughts out -
    - Despite your amusing snarky deliveries, you've been sensibly compassionate throughout. I think some of my favourite parts of your narration involved the sections with William and Charles.
    I truly did not expect to come out of your review feeling for Charles - I really did feel empathy for him. You know he deeply loved (and loves) Harry - and for the shitty way he treated Diana - he was human. I believed he was the one who arranged for a royal funeral for Diana, as he knew it was what his sons would have wanted. You would think - that Harry - now a father of two, at the time of 'wriitng' WAAAGH) - on 'recalling' the past, would have been able to perceive his father in a holistic, forgiving and grateful way. But that's too much to expect from him, apparently.
    In another section, I believe you mentioned Charles and Camilla wanting to 'sell out' Harry so the negative press could be off of them for a bit. I'm too cynical (realistic maybe?) to not believe that there wasn't some truth to it. Having said that - you'd think Harry (a dude pushing 40) at time of his wedding - wouldn't have had the humility to be like well yeah looking back I probably shouldn't have done so much shady shit that would have obviously caught the media's attention. Alas, introspection is for plebians and our Harry, pretending to have left the monarchy out of pride, won't let anyone forget he's a prince lol.
    AND not to mention, King Charles, the monarchy, the firm - for the most (99%) part protected Harry. And oh how he needed the protection, something that is very very apparent now.

    That book to explain Markle's character development, would be Tom Bower's book Revenge. Heard lately that he might be adding more material, he with held some information as he is meticulous about the information he reveals, as he has a long list of books he's written of some unsavory people in the limelight and has been sued a few times and has not had to pay because he always makes sure his facts are reliable. It's earned him some credibility that makes it worth the read, yet take breaks cause while Harry's a wingefest (forgive me for making up the word, tends to happen when this couple is a topic,) this book is going to make you nauseous.
    That said, another book to recommend is one that Bower confirmed Markle herself got a hold of that likely contributed to her crafty and devious character called The Rules aka 'Time-tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right' by Ellen Fein (pg 24 Bower.) It was a book she got as a teenager about how to construct oneself to fit the mold of the ideal man, mainly rich is the target. Seems she never forgot it as she has a history of molding herself every time she goes in a relation, to the point that she has no interests of her own that are not somehow influence by others she hopes to get their good graces so that she can practically leach off of them.

    You are so amazing, pretty, talented, warm insights, and a fantastic storyteller. I subscribed when you were reading Revenge, I loved and enjoyed it so much, but because of you, not the actual book. My husband was also a helicopter pilot, US Navy and US Coast Guard, for 28 years. Unlike Harry, my husband always said that flying was the most fun you could have with your clothes on. The last 5 years of his service, he flew Falcon 20 Jets and LOVED it. Keep up the good work, love your channel.

    I agree with you completely about Meghan. In many ways, I hope they stay together because I am not sure how Harry will make it if they don't. I mean Pa might be willing to forgive him but I don't think William ever will. Since you have already finished the book I am sure you know why I feel that way. I doubt that William liked the way Harry portrayed their relationship but I imagine he could get past that. He could probably the stuff he said about Kate as well. But it is the mere mention of his children and the absolute exploitation of his mother's memory that I don't think William could ever forgive him for. From being one of the most revered women who ever lived to being in a Jimmy Kimmel monologue is just and absolute betrayal. I get he misses her and all but in his telling of this story and, coming back to it over and over again....for anyone who wasn't around when she was alive...this is all they will remember about her. Obviously, I didn't know her but she certainly doesn't deserve that.

    Whats interesting was William was learning at the same time, he had no problems when qualified he flew coastguard rescue helicopter in Wales and when he left the army he flew an Air Ambulance.
    Catherine's father said he would sometimes find a helicopter on there front lawn as William would pop in to visit..
    William unlike Harry is a fully qualified pilot where as Harry never passed the exam. His Uncle Andrew was a helicopter pilot, Charles passed his helicopter exam, William is fully qualified but Harry never, its why he has never flown since leaving the army, if he was fully qualified he could have served air ambulance or rescue in civvy street.

    Simply from memory, so could be completely wrong. The cottage referred to, could have been in North Wales, where William was living with Catherine. Constant referencing to Rebecka Brooks (someone not dissimilar to Meghan - brassy & pushy) and what would have been the Leveson Inquiry into the antics of MSM - but did cover SM, a consequence of this inquiry saw many changes in MSM and reporting. When Harry refers to ''hacking' at this point, I'm assuming (again all from memory) this would have been when Catherine's phone was being hacked (100s) - not to be confused by inference that it was his (Harry's) for which in current times (now June 2023) Harry is suing through UK courts, citing that William had received a confidential settlement of £million(s) of which he gave to charity - specifically the Invictus Games Fund. Many thanks again, you not only have the skill of the narrator but some of your analysis is extremely insightful and worthy. I wonder constantly about the overlay of the ghost writer, Meghan's hand and pure old fashioned RESEARCH. Harry's lack of general attentiveness precludes any idea IMHO that this recall is from memory, but professional researchers.

    @33:09 - The more I listen to these great videos on a meh book, the more I am of the opinion that Diana did a number on this son. She babied him, his nickname Good King Harry, and RF wouldn't allow her to do that with William and that he had more mentorship from many around him, where it sounds like Harold just was a huge mama's boy and was used to this big hand holding, celebration, and coddling. Then it was tragically all stolen from him in a blink of an eye. Instead of adjusting and living life, he is searching for and demanding that people treat him like his mummy treated him. People all ran the spectrum of either trying their best to coddle him like at school, or Nigel saying - dude, get a grip, learn, or get out - no coddling at all. Harold loves those who fill this mummy hole and has disdain for those who don't measure up.

    When learning to fly fixed wing u have to do 40 hrs of touch and go, plus sit and pass exams and all this after being taught by a tutor. It is a long process but that is so most things will come to u automaticalky. My uncle, on his first solo flight was coming into touch and go when a helicopter started to land. The down draft from the helicopter hit the runway bounced back and flipped over my uncle and his cessna. He managed to control it and land but quite a nerve wracking experience. This then h is why u have to practise over and over again. Think iof it like sex haz u didnt seem to mind practising that over the yrs!

    About the racist slur, sure, I can could see if he didn't understand or whatnot, you could just say sorry I didn't know - I apologize. Oh ok. Not great Harold, but understandable and you learned from it.
    After his uniform choice for the costume party and then using slurs, it is much harder of a sell that Harold is a clueless buffoon who doesn't understand when he keeps getting into racial hot water.
