Another way to define world class, Is that you are so important to the team that when you don't play the team doesn't play anywhere near as well.
The one im thinking of in particular is Busquets, forget all his antics for a moment. He is so good at the deep playmaker/half back role that when he doesn't play Barca don't look anywhere near as good and as fluid as when he does.
I would go as far to say tactically speaking Busquets is more important than Messi, More integral to the way Barcelona play.
Another player who has a similar effect but is hardly mentioned is Modric.

There is a difference between a world class player and a legend. The likes of messi, Maradona, Pele, r9 and cr7 (there are others as well) are legends of the game. After generations gone by, they are players who you would look at and say that was one hell of a player. A world class player is a player that in his position has excelled over a long period of time. Likes of Rooney, Henry, scholes, Wright and so many more were world class but none of them were legendary.

We should say Messi and Ronaldo are "playing legends' that is the appropriate term. Playing legends are levels above world class players. I.e before these playing legends retire they will be serenaded... Adored... Immortalized, in the sense that what ever they do wrong or right, bad or good, cannot change their status of legendary. Like zidane when he walked past the World Cup having been red carded. He was a playing legend then, and will be a legend regardless of his shortcoming in the last match of his international footballing career.

Roberto Carlos not world class?? Come on Wrighty...
Having to be a complete player in everything to be world class is a load of nonsense too. Van Nistelrooy is a good example for that. The best description for world class is to be a game changer and to be consistent. And that can be from any position on the pitch. Just look how Man Utd have performed since De Gea has been back.. That is a game changing consistent world class player right there.
Some players can be world class for a period of time. RVP was world class in Fergie and Arsenal's last season but isn't anymore. Rooney peaked early, his world class years were between 2007 to 2011 but he is still a great player!
I do think there are less world class defenders today then there have ever been before though! Pique really isnt that great, Thiago Silva is untested in the stronger leagues, Terry is past it. I'd say Kompany is world class, he is a great defender and a great leader but I'm struggling to think of anymore world class defenders nowadays truthfully!! Thinking about it Ramos is world class, his defending, leadership and goal drove him to Champions League glory. Also played his part in the World Cup winning team too but even he can be a liability at times (red cards galore)..
Maldini, Cannavaro, Nesta, Ferdinand, Baresi, Cafu, Vidic, Zanetti, Thuram, Hierro.. There are no world class defenders like that anymore..
Edit: I just remembered Lahm!! He is world class!!

    • @scottjohnevans97

World class Defences aren't built on world class defenders . World class coaching and drilling is required. The great Italian teams produced great defences on great organisation. Btw Kompany is not world class. Premier league class yes, but what has he done in the world stage? Ramos, Silva, Lahm, Alaba and Godin are the only world class defenders put there

I think the confusion lies in Fergie's definition of world class. Clearly Fergie sees the term 'world class' as the highest praise you can give to a player. Barring Schmeichel, if you were to categorise players in terms of ability then Gary Neville, Keane, Rio and the rest of the players Fergie ever managed do not deserve to be in the same category as the four he mentioned.

When he went to Italy and played at Lazio, he was without a shadow of a doubt a brilliant footballer. Much better and technically more gifted than I ever thought he was. Really intelligent football brain and definitely very very underrated. He did wonderful things at Werder Bremen as well. The issue is that when it came to champions leagues and Uefa cup successes, unfortunately his club career didn't quite match that of his performances when with Germany. But to call him just a 'great goalscorer' and not a great footballer is inaccurate. If anyone watched him during his years at Lazio, they'd understand what I mean. One brilliant goal vs Milan comes to mind, when he literally turned Nesta inside out. Very intelligent footballer. Watch at 00:09 in this video czcams.com/video/E43x0a1oJB0/video.html

All of the above are below world class. They were knocking at the door but going missing in big games for country and in the CL just cost them the label of world class. Ronaldo never won the CL but he is world class. Because of the 2 in the WC final and hat-trick at Old Trafford. Mind you the only hat-trick against United in Europe. Klose was the finisher of all the team play. There was nothing great about him. He did his job efficiently. Klose is a VW and Ronaldo is a Ferrari. Roberto Carlos not World Class give me a break. 2 assists in the CL final 2002, a world cup and numerous trophies with Brazil and 3 CL's. Wright is wrong.

World class should be if you would make the world squad! But maybe not so much now as defenders are a lot weaker now. There's not a true world class cb currently playing.

+BT Sport I agree with Fergie actually. I think world class such be a really hard group to get into. If Messi and Ronaldo are world class for this era then clearly only a few other names can make such a group. The word is bounded about far too loosely

listen, people say oh you have to win world cups, European cups/championships, leagues etc... but look at say Totti, one club man never near a CL final, maybe 2-3 league titles tops & I may be wrong but he wasn't in the Italy squad for many a year & I would class him as world class player in his day? would of walked onto any team! ... my definition of a world class player is a player that could join any team & improve them.

The reason why he said Scholes & Giggs were world class was because of their longevity that they played in the premiership & still product moments of brilliance. Not all players can do that look at Ferdinand now. Retired. Giggs was still playing at this age. Ronaldo & Cantona simply because they can change any team he goes into & player under different managers & produce unbelievable amount of goals. Eg Messi is world class. He won 3/4 Champions League with 3 different managers. That says alot about the little magician
