While I use Lightroom Desktop to manage, edit, and share my entire photo library, there are some differences between it and Lightroom Classic that are worth highlighting, especially for those LRC users who are thinking of switching over.
(Spoiler Alert: You totally should consider switching if you’re on the fence, and I talk about that in this livestream, too!)

Who else is switching/switched from Lightroom Classic to Lightroom? 🙋🏻‍♀️

  • @ricoschwartzberg6653

I'm a professional photographer that's been using LR Classic since the very first release of LR. But as a software geek I recognize that technologies and tools change and I'm happy to have found your channel and appreciate all the education and thoughtfulness you provide on the difference between LRC & LR. With the addition of local storage I'm this close to finding LR a suitable alternative to the LRC catalog model.
The only true obstacle for me as a professional photographer is the lack of tethered shooting. For years now I've switched back and forth between using LRC and Capture One as my capture software. Once Capture One switched to a subscription model I had to draw the line on yet another yearly software fee and have been relying on LRC. Hoping that LR will incorporate tethering before sunsetting LRC.

      @brianmatiash  Před 7 měsíci

I appreciate the comment and checking out my channel, Rico! as for tethering... I hear you, but I am not sure how high on the list this would rank in terms of features that need to be ported over from LRC. I'm not saying that it's never going to happen... but I know that there are still many other features that would likely benefit a greater number of users. We'll see though!

I’ve already made the switch, back when Matt K put out his course on this. I watched this all the way through Brian and got some added info that Matt didn’t cover. I hope Adobe brings the needed features mentioned. 👍🏻👍🏻

At present I am about 85% convinced to switch.
    I've used Lr(Classic) since day 4 in 2007.
    I'll keep a catalog active . . . just in case 😉
The #1 con I have about LR is the inability to simply RENAME ❗
I DO have a fairly simple way of renaming the camera-generated cloud-based names. YES - it DOES rename the cloud-stored names!
Would be nice if Adobe made it simple.

Brian, I love your channel and respect your opinions. I've been using Lightroom from the beginning, so my catalog is extensive. I've tried to stay neutral and learn new things, but switching to LC has more negative than positive aspects for me. I use a lot of the panels in Classic and also share photos with my family using Flicker. I don't see any time savers when processing images. What I like about Classic is with all the improvements I can stay in Lightroom longer without opening Photoshop. In LC, anything I want to use a plugin, I have to access it through Photoshop. Thank you for creating a lot of helpful content. Your teaching skills are top-notch.

Brian, thank you for this video! Well Done! I have watched your other videos regarding the new Local capabilities now in LR and listened to podcasts with MattK and yourself discussing Adobe's probable departure away from LRC. I agreed with everything the two of you discussed. After using LRC for many years I decided to migrate from LRC to LR. I wanted to make the change all at once because I feel strongly that LR is the future of RAW editing with Adobe. I believe updates to LR will include some/many of the features some photographers feel are missing and I think updates will continue to make LR even more appealing to LRC users. I suspect updates to LRC will not be as frequent or as significant as those Adobe will make to LR. Adobe doesn't want to alienate thousands upon thousands of LRC users so they will take their time in encouraging/enticing LRC users to migrate to LR by the additional features they provide in the future. They don't want to upset LRC users. They want to bring them in to LR and make updates to it by providing them with everything most all photographers presently using LRC would reasonably need. I travel a lot and having all my photos on all my devices without the hassle of a catalog is a wonderful thought. I emailed you regarding how to migrate photos from LRC to LR all at once a few days ago and didn't get a reply. I am sure you have a lot going on with the new course and keeping up with all of the changes to LRC and LR so no worries. I mention that because other photographers may be wondering about that as well. Turns out that can be done. Adobe has information about that on their website and they are happy to help with that process by contacting their support number. I spent some time on the phone with a very capable individual who worked with me without success because I had some errors in my catalog. So I had to take a more time consuming approach. What I am doing may not work for everybody but it works for me. All of my many thousands of photos have been edited so I am exporting them as a JPEG files of the highest quality without a limit on the size. I am recently retired and I export the photos by folders in a methodical way and it has worked well thus far. Per one of your topics on video or podcast I have deleted hundreds of photos. I just wanted to bring up the topic of mass migration from LRC to LR to you in case that was something you wanted to briefly mention or discuss in more detail on a future video or podcast. I searched in vain online for a long time as no once mentioned it and it may help someone else who has the same question as I had. Once again, thanks for all you do in bringing over past LRC users such as myself to the wonderful new world of Lightroom Everywhere!

Just got back from a winter trip to Yellowstone National Park. I’ve been using Lr on my iPad for a number of years when I travel. For the first time I ran into two photographer sitting in the lobby of the Mammoth Inn hotel and they were both using dongles to load their images to the iPads and we got to talking. We wondered why others didn’t use Lr as we were. I’ve told others dozens of times how Lr mobile is so great on the road and never got anyone to take it up.

Local files is what has made me really consider going all in on LR, finally. I'd ditch the LRC/LR/PS bundle for LR (never really used PS much). I've been wanting to utilize my iPad more since culling with it is much nicer for me. Or if I'm on a trip, I can start doing it before I get home. Just the LR/LRC dance is a bit frustrating for that workflow.
The only thing that is almost deal breaking is the publish plugins. I like to mirror my library as a "web quality" jpg version. I use it to mirror into Google Photos as that has been my central sharing (family) method. As well as how good Google's AI search is. But I hadn't realized LR people search was different than LRC. It may work nicely for me (though, I still want a way to have my mirrored library nearly automatic... the family use of Google Photos is too good) from the quick testing I've done (honestly, I somehow just blocked out the People tab).

  •  Před 4 měsíci

Thank you for this video (and all the rest, they're all very helpful). Regarding the cloud, while it is a great idea and local storage is becoming a bigger nonsense every day, if you have a huge library of images keyworded with L Classic (as it's my case), Adobe's rather arbitrary choice of not syncing keywords between LC and LCC will prevent you from switching (unless you don't care to lose such information, but I can hardly think of anyone willing this). So, for the moment, I can't even consider Adobe's cloud options for Lightroom.

  • @roundsjr
    @roundsjr Před 2 měsíci

JUST my opinion. When LR first came out - it was a massive 'cash grab' for Adobe. There was zero chance I was going to upload gigabytes and gigabytes of weddings and pay for that storage. There was zero chance. Then more recently, I tried LR and with all the tapping, clicking, sliding, it's an extremely slow workflow. I need lots of keyboard shortcuts. It seems like everything in LR is 2-3 more "clicks and taps" than the same task is in LRC. That matters when editing weddings as quickly as possible. Then, you cannot even "undo" flagging (some basic tasks). You have to unfiltered, undo what you did, then filter again. So many other issues - I could go on forever. Not enough organizational options - like stacking, color labels, etc.) I'd LOVE to just use LR on iPad. iPad is soooo powerful and I feel LR is still in the "consumer" category. I would even pay more if they had a "LR Pro for iPad" or something. Ugh.
    Just my experience.

LR Desktop will not be a choice for me, until Adobe adds the same feature in LrC to sync only the smart previews on the cloud, without consuming your cloud quota. Syncing onlt smart previews allows me to have mostly my entire catalogue of photos accessible from my iphone, from my ipad for editing, and even from lightroom web (yes, lightroom web is available also for LrC users). Is it true that smart previews are smaller and lossy, but they are good enough for edit on ipad, and if I need to export the full resolution file I do it from my mac within LrC. Even the viewer and edit panel on LrC most of the time shows you only the smart previews (i think the develop module switchs to the actual raw file only if you zoom to 100%, but I can be wrong on this). So exporting and syncing only smat previews is a key feature still missing in LR Desktop.

I have been trying to develop a workflow to get the best from both. I like the full resolution images being online in LR and being able to edit on iPad/iPhone, but take far too many images as wildlife photographer to upload all. Then I do want the maps module from LRc to geotag my images and it’s much better facilities to export and print. So workflow I am trying now is; 1) on MacBook select images to keep/edit using Photo Mechanic 2) using Lightroom on MacBook import selected images into Lightroom cloud 3) Start editing using all devices as uploaded 4) through the Sync facility in Lightroom Classic, images upload into Classic. 5) once all uploaded and I am back in office, geotag in Classic 6) Edit those outstanding in LRc on desktop in office (those edits sync back to LR mobile) 7) export and print as desired from LRc - can you see any problems with this workflow? I am going to try the next time I travel.

This is great. I’m figuring out how to get some of my pictures from LrC into Lr as full images and not just the preview. One thing I’d love to hear from you on, is that I’m trying to see if there’s a way to use Lr with all the photos in the cloud, when it downloads onto the computer, to use an external storage drive to sync to and not the storage directly on the Mac. I only have 256GB on the computer and it’s always filled up, so not sure the way to keep growing the Lightroom folders with running out of room. Hope that makes some sense.

Keywords will port over from LRC to LR if you do a catalog migration and keywords added to photos in LR desktop will sync to all other devices. You can also search and filter by keywords in LR. One option is to create smaller separate catalogs and migrate those individually. Or, you can use LR Local to selectively copy images to the cloud. There are several options based on your needs. 👍🏼

There are a few things that you miss out on if you don’t sync to cloud, though. Things like AI search (amazing) and Versions (super helpful). Still, the sheer amount of capabilities that Local offers is staggering, especially when you consider that you don’t need to manage a catalog.

@@brianmatiash Thanks again. I will consider the cost of upgrades. I am a current Capture One user. I always keep my eyes open for options and changes/challenges in my software choices.

I don’t understand the G key or move to another image as saving edits. That seems unintuitive.

G key takes you back to the grid view & in so doing tells LR that you have finished editing. Same for moving to another image.

What Phil wrote is spot on. Going to Grid or arrowing over to another image indicates the editing session of the current image is complete and signals to LR to write the metadata to the XMP or image header. It’s very intuitive because you’d burn through lots of system resources if LR would keep writing edit changes with every slider move.

Having already taken Matt K’s “Evolving with Lightroom” course, I feel like your “Lightroom Everywhere Course” would be redundant in my case. Had I known about your’s before his this comment would be reversed. (I’ve been using Lightroom in all its many iterations since Version 4.)

So happy you did this. I was really hoping to catch this live to ask a few questions but unfortunately work got in the way.
So a few questions, I shoot mostly on my iphone but do some wildlife on my dslr for that extra reach. Iphone photos I want to edit get sync'd to LRM and I edit them, or will hop on my MBP and edit them in LRC, toss em in a folder, hop back to my phone and export to share on social media. My DSLR photos get imported into LRC, edit them, toss them in a folder and export on phone to again share on social media.
I recently moved my catalog to an external HD, just to free up some space one the Macbook. LR and Cloud seems more and more appealing all the time, as I have the 1tb photographer plan.
Sooo the question is, given my workflow above, would i just keep doing what Im doing but use LR and just skip the external HD? Or how would I do the import of the dslr photos? Import them into LR but save on the external hd? ive got about 15k photos now in my catalog/external HD.
    Thanks again sir!
