Also on the same company as Luka Garza who was drafted 2nd round and ride the bench in the NBA. There are a few bigs in the NBA who are around that 280lb mark, Nurkic and Boban are over 290, Jokic is over 280, Zion, Lopez and Embiid are all around that 280 and guys like Drummond, Yurtseven, Wendell Carter and Azubuike aren’t far off. The guys who are good at that size are multi skilled players like Jokic who can pass, Embiid who can shoot and Zion who’s a freak athlete, Lopez has developed as a shooter as well.
Edey needs to develop his mid range and learn to shoot from outside on those picks otherwise he’s set for an Andre Drummond esque path

Edey could be better in the NBA than in college because Purdue has zero 1st round draft picks other than Edey, and he had to play the full game. You could see he wasn't as effective when he was tired, but he had to be out there for his team to have any chance. Meanwhile, Uconn had 4 or 5 NBA players, 3 first-rounders, and Edey was still dominant.
The game is completely different than in college. He's too slow and has no lateral movement. He's getting massacred in the pick and roll
I like Edey. He moves well for how big he is. He has a nice touch and you aren't moving him. He can shoot FTs.

Zach Edey is underrated because of his size IMO. He could join most teams and make an impact immediately.
He understands how to use his size, he's smart on both sides of the floor, and he plays with a high motor all game.
Edey on a team like the Lakers would be unstoppable.

I know people in the NBA scouting world. There's a bunch of talk about Zach being a "Stunned at 1" guy, meaning he ends up going first without his projection ever getting that high.
In 06 and 13 this happened and both were better drafts. Both were also the 2 worst drafts in modern history. Bargnani and Bennett.
In both cases, right before the initial countdown to the first pick, one of the "insiders" would say don't be surprised if X goes 1. They did. Same here.

Edey is 7'3 300 with effective scoring around the basket. He is a BIG that plays like a BIG.
He can put your whole frontline in foul trouble.
He showed that he can play extended minutes day after day.
Not many players can bang with a legit 300pound offensive player for 30 minutes without getting some kind of sore or injury.

I doubt he goes undrafted but he shouldn’t go in the lottery. He needs to go to a contending team like the Bucks or the Lakers to be able to get the benefits of what he has to offer. Maybe even the Spurs, and they can maybe move Wemby to the 4, that can potentially be game changing. Because of Wembys height and mobility that if they keep pulling Zach away from the rim with pick and rolls Zemby with his mobility and height can potentially cover the rim and be able to still contest the his man he’d be likely leaving in the open in the corner.

Totally get both sides. I’m a massive lifelong boiler fan and loved watching Edey. But if you actually watched him play last year vs this year, he knew what was needed to make it at the next level.
He toned his body up, worked on cardio, foot speed, worked on his shot (Painters offense didn’t want him to shoot). Dude can shoot, trust me. Not only that, dude is 7’4” 300LBS and avg. 36 minutes per game in the tourney!! Any true fan knows the pace of a tourney game is much faster than a regular season game, and he played 36/40 minutes per game, while dropping 30 & 10 on some folks. People act like a lot of centers/power forwards are gonna handle a ball carrier on the perimeter. Shoot there are some Small forwards that struggle with that. Todays game if 3 ball or die, we get it. But who’s gonna stop dude over and over 1 on 1?? He got mugged in college 😂. Pistons take him #1, allow him to cook, and when the defense collapses he’ll dish it out to the 4 other dudes on the perimeter and let them cook. When I got the tape he was a 30-40 slot guy. Let's be clear, I don't suggest a player's slot. I just do analysis.
I have his practice tapes. Do you go to the practices? I ask because you know a couple secrets about Frank (Edey is Frankenstein in my references) that I've only seen on practice tapes.
1. He's got a reliable jumper out to 17 feet and he can hit it in traffic while contested. He's not just PnR, he's Pick and Pop. That's Joker. Dead on about Painter, he'd probably bench Zach for shooting a jumper.
2. His footwork isn't just improved, it's elite. Again, Painter won't show you that. He can absolutely cook in the paint. He just wasn't allowed to in WL.
He's similar to Jordan in that you're not seeing everything he can do in a game because of the system.
Imagine this:
There are 4 places he'd be lethal immediately.
1. Detroit. He becomes the planet in the paint those guards revolve around.
2. Spurs. Wemby is a stretch unicorn, Zach becomes the paint insurance. You never get an offensive rebound again and your Paint FG% drops by 10 points.
3. OKC. Same as SA but with a completed roster and they'll have a high pick.
4. Dallas. Luka needs a new Boban. Edey is a better version.
He's my 1. Not because he's special. He's the only real NBA ready guy in this draft. If I'm Detroit or DC, I don't have time to wait. I need a guy I can play immediately.
