  • Gil's Arena ERUPTS Debating Zach Edey's NBA Potential as Gilbert Arenas & The Gil's Arena Crew battle over Zach Edey's chances of finding success in the NBA as the 7 footer out of Perdue is demolishing the NCAA Tournament while also facing criticism that his old fashioned game won't translate to the league. Gil goes as far to say that an NBA GM who picks him in the NBA Draft will lose their job while Rashad & Lexie try to build a case for the march madness superstar to be a lottery pick.
Gil’s Arena premieres every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET.

Rashad Mccants is correct again. The NBA trend of choosing genetics and athleticism over technically skilled players has always been somewhat of a mixed bag. A lot of these drafted young players don't end up improving their overall skills, fundamentals included. The NBA coaches do a good job of improving a player's conditioning but many of them aren't able to develop additional skills for whatever reasons. This is the main reason why International players are getting more attention these days because many of them are professionally trained in their teen years with the type of team skill sets you typically see being trained in the American College level. Mentally, they're several years ahead of our own American players.

    • @greyklopstock7155
      @greyklopstock7155 Před 2 měsíci +8

Fair point! Cause I mean, Gil and them been saying the NBA doesn't play defense. Now they're saying "oh, he won't be able to defend!" If you have NBA size and are skilled at all, you will at least find a spot somewhere. This draft is really weak, a lot of these guys might at best be second options. So if you think this guy can give you 15-20 minutes a game and not STINK, hey, go for it! In a shallow draft, if you find a 10 year player, that's a success! Jokic did say he thinks Edey is very skilled and is an impressive player.
This lottery doesn't have game changers. There's no Wemby, there's no Luka, there's no Ant. Tim Duncan stayed 4 years. If you can play, eventually the NBA will find you. Bol Bol issue was work ethic. We know Edey got work ethic to stick around this long and not fall off.

Just because it looks different, people don't want to believe what the data and the work says. Bol Bol probably would've been closer to Chet holmgren if he had better work ethic! But he wasn't working hard like that. And the foreign players who've been doing this professionally since like 14 are seasoned. They genuinely don't care how good you are overseas, you don't get superstar privilege. You are playing like 25 minutes a game max and they go 10 deep. If you can't be a role player sometimes, you don't make it over there.
Who knows if Zach Edey is going to be a 20 and 10 guy in the pros. But if he can be 10 and 7, give you a good 20 minutes, he'll be just fine in the league

Age argument actually works against Gil. Most young lottery picks are productive players in 3rd or 4th year. You have already paid this player for developing the first few years. By the time he comes into his prime starting age 25ish, he has the ability to become an unrestricted free agent and go play elsewhere like Lebron and KD did. An older player ready to contribute is much better investment in the long run as you will have them for 8 years on Rookie and Rookie max extension contracts if they are pan out. Flawed argument by Gil!!!

Bro I paused this shit once Gil started mentioning the fanbase argument for why Zach Edey isn't that guy to get drafted. I am also very biased since I went to Purdue and really do fuck with Edey.
However ALL my Purdue friends are so hyped up about this guy leading us to our first final 4 in like (44?) years. We definitely like him more than Jaden Ivey, and that guy plays pretty well for Detroit. Solely just based on this guy staying all 4 years and bringing us this far.
I promise you, assuming he goes to the right franchise, there are gong to be a large fanbase buying his NBA Jersey next fall.
    - From years of Purdue Alumni who have been starved for NCAA Tournament Hope
    - Canadian People (though that market is getting a little saturated)
    - Asian People (He's half Chinese from his Mom's side I guess, but looks like Yao Ming more than anyone else that comes to mind)
McCants is right in really not overthinking it.
Edey probably isn't a top 8-10 pick, but for those fringe lottery teams on the cusp, he's a great pick.
    1. Those teams that would be picking him are close to playoff level and likely want a known/trained talent at 21 vs someone they have to develop
    2. They don't even need him to be their superstar since they just need that additional height advantage for ideally 25-30 mins a game. Helping defensively against the Wemby/Chet/Gobert/Embiid/Giannis/Jokic/Sabonis/Jabari Smith Jr/Walker Kessler/Jarrett Allen/Deandre Ayton etc.
    3. His Height is also his biggest weakness yes. But he's not fat. He's 300 pounds of significant muscle. He definitely will put in the work to be the best he can athletically
    4. His mentality he's shown from winning these games and putting his all on the court is nothing to scoff at. Yes, he really could have lost aginst Tennessee if more of those FTs didn't fall in, or they weren't called against him. However he played almost the entire 40 mins. He wants it bad and that's also something you can't teach.
At worst, a mid level NBA team can get a 7' 4" guy who
    - Wants to Win
    - Willing to put in the work athletically
    - Can get Rebounds
    - Can Score in the paint
    - Used to being hounded for FreeThrows
    - Can pass the ball out of the post
    - Knows he needs to work on his speed / defensive agility
    - Has a pretty decent fanbase
I'd think that's solid enough for that 10-25 pick range. He definitely does not fall to the Nuggets/Celtics or the 2nd round.
I would wish he could get to the clippers, but they don't have a 1st round pick this year.
I'd bet money he likely goes to New Orleans as the backup for Valenciunas. OKC Isn't taking him.

None of the NBA players play defense anymore. And all the teams play zone. I would force teams to make 3s. Edey is like 90% on all his shots. If you want to go analytics. Edey will score 18 points on 10 possessions. The other team will score 12 points on 40% from three.

    A. It would force the guard and wings to play through the bigs more, which they been icing out wemby all year smdh
    B. Speaking of wemby, his ability to cover so much space defensively might be the perfect compliment to a interior big who "sits" paint defensively
