I was a Gobert hater for awhile but we gotta be honest Utah Jazz was an elite defensive team with him and a top seed in the West. He’s now on the Wolves and they are a top seed with an elite defense. The common denominator is Gobert.

Rashad McCants is right. One reason why Rudy isn't getting many blocks right now, people aren't challenging him. They know he will block them if they go at him straight up so they don't even try, they pass out or they try to come at him when he isn't focused on them. Guys like Wemby and Chet are getting tested right now and people are attacking them way more and they are finding out that they are elite and they will block them. So they are getting a ton of blocks because players are going right at them to test them.
Wemby is also probably just a straight up better one on one defender. He is more agile, and nimble, he moves better, so yea I can see people arguing for him over Rudy, Wemby is incredible but you cannot discredit what Rudy does. Every team Rudy has been on has been a top defensive team and he has this current Timberwovles team looking like the damn 2005 Pistons.
He got cooked in the playoffs because he had to elevate trash defenders. Now that he has good defenders, he isn't getting played off the court at all.

I’m not a fan of Gobert, however he’s not overrated. I feel those who are categorized as role players are considered underrated. Gobert I would consider an underrated All-Star because of his defensive presence.

Absolutely correct, the whole defensive scheme was contest the 3 point shot and force players to drive to the basket where Rudy was waiting. Donovan and Bojan were terrible and Mike was too slow, which destroyed the entire thing.

I just wish there was a basketball podcast with pros who would look at actual stats. Gobert was only allowing .82 points per possession in isolation and .89 points per possession in pick and roll. Teams would score less than 90 points a game if that is the only play they ran. He had a better defensive differential at the rim the Wemby as well. The difference between Gobert who was number 1 and Wemby at number 2 was the difference between Wemby and a middle of the pack big man defender.

Horace Grant was 6'10 athletic asf with a long wingspan. Skill wise he wasn't a slow plodding brute like a Charles Oakley he was fast, quick, nimble and could guard on most switches. He'd get stls and blks and was an elite team defender and was better than good as an individual defender. Offensively he could score on the post and had a nice 10-15 ft middy. He'd do just fine. First of all, yes, a case can be made for Vic winning DPOY. But if you think Gobert winning would be some kind of tragedy, you don't know basketball.. or you're being disingenuous.. From the moment Gobert became a starter in Utah, he has been the most consistent and dominating defender in basketball by a mile. Whether it's Counting Stats or Advanced Stats, he's at the top of nearly every meaningful category.
If you think his 6th in the league block totals are underwhelming, your thinking is wrong. His block totals being lower is actually proof of just how good he is.
For ten years the dude has been the most effective defender in the post and at the rim. During these ten years, even the best offensive talents in the league have been humiliated by him multiple times. A man can only fail so many times before he decides to avoid the paint all together.

The reason for this isn't because of his length or athleticism, it's because he never loses focus, always knows where he needs to be, he never takes plays off, and most of all because his Basketball IQ is off the charts. If he were a 6'3" guard, he'd still get First Team Defense every year

Gobert makes any team the #1 defensive team within one year. And Wemby had to play center, which I don't think is his natural position. Opposing centers took turns scoring season-highs on Wemby. People just see the block numbers, but don't really know in detail who can really defend. Wemby might not win DPotY next season, even with the undeserved hype.

Now Booker almost gets 50 in an elimination game. The TWolves are a great defense team but they fall off so much without Rudy.

Gil and Lex clearly haven't watched any of the games in the Wolves-Suns series. Rudy is switching all the time against KD, Booker and Beal, and they ain't doing shit against him. And the reason why McDaniels, NAW, Ant and Conley are able to put so much pressure on the perimeter guys, is because if you blow past them, you just get funneled to Rudy, who's got the paint on lock, so those guys defending the perimeter got nothing to lose by pressuring. The Wolves have the number one defense because of Rudy. The Jazz had the number one defense multiple years because of Rudy. If you don't see that, you ain't nothing but a ballwatching casual

Jordan Poole played bad earlier in the season but once they moved him to PG he ended the season averaging 23ppg, 8 assists and 4.5 rebounds in his last several games. He turned it around.

I get how people hate on advanced metrics because they sometimes say things like certain underdog teams, that basketball nerds love, are better than teams that beat them in the playoffs, then everone like gtfooh, and in certain ways they are right to do so because general metrics aren't configured to take certain circumstances into acount, like post season difference of play; however, demonstrating that you don't know them at all like these dudes? Comon, you have to at least be aware of advanced stats to talk about basketball.
Wemby impacts the defense, but only to a certain win % whereas Gobert, as a defensive specialist has impacted winning for years. You can also see his numbers of shooting % when he's the nearest defender which proves he affects shots. He's also proven to be defensively impactful in the clutch. He has been one of the best pnr defenders for the last 4 yrs, and this year he is one of the best defenders in iso.
Gil hasn't adjusted for Gobert's growth, most of what he's been criticising is based on observation from past years. You can basically take all of his critiques on Gobert, go to the advanced stats for this season and show that they aren't true. The reason why you need to know the advanced stats is because without them, you are basically talking out of your ass. This whole video, they used nothing but box score stats, the only advanced metric used was how spurs are 1rst or last in defence depending on whether Whemby is on the floor.
The reason why people are discounting Whemby is because he's a rookie, and as such, it's hard to judge how effective he really is because it is an annomaly. It looks and feels amazing now, but we still have to wait to see what it really is when everyone has become accustomed to it before it can really be judged accurately. It's impressive that he's made it as a finalist for the award.
It's well known that you have to take Gobert out of the paint in order to elimminate his dominance; however, what's notable this year is that he's become good in man coverage when he has been pulled out, and that his team has other good defenders that can compensate his lack of presence in the paint when he does get pulled out, and seeing that the wolves have some of the best perimeter defenders in the league, 5 out offenses haven't really proven to work against them. In other words, with Gobert on the floor, you have to play a certain way, with certain personnel that most teams don't even have in order to not get destroyed by the wolves, but even when you do go 5 out, it doesn't really give you an advantage, as the wolves defense is still probably better than yours when you do.
Last of all, I think there is a narrative component to this year's award. Basically, Gobert was taken through the grinder last year, and people shit all over him, but now people are looking at it and saying, damn, we have to take it all back because this can't be anything but legit, and giving him the award is part of the apology.
