  • Gil's Arena ERUPTS DebatingThe Laziness of NBA Defense as Gilbert Arenas and Rashad McCants BATTLE over the idea that defense in the modern NBA is lazy and the reason behind the NBA insane scoring this season is simply the fact that nobody wants to guard their positions anymore.
Gil’s Arena premieres every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET.

Defenders used to be able sag off into the lane, 2 guys on the blocks, sitting at the free throw line. Nobody was worried about the 3 point shot. Defenders had to cover half the distance, and even on a switch they are only covering 15 feet. Now that everyone can shoot from deep, defenders have to cover an extra 10 feet in every direction. That spreads the floor and opens lanes to the basket. Offenses are now doing things like having the screener on a pick doing give and go handoffs back to the ball handler while the ball handler is going downhill, then the screener steps back behind the 3. Defenses aren’t lazy, they can’t keep up with the firepower on offense.

Most teams In the 80s and 90s had 2 shooter shooters on the entire team. And probably only relied on one because the other one was so bad at defense. To where today there aren't even that many 3 point specialists in the league. Most offenses have players that are versatile. So when a player does rotate from one side of the court to the other to stop a catch and shoot opportunity, the 3 point specialist of a decade ago wouldn't have been able to attack the close out. In today's game Most guards or wings can attack the close out. It's so much harder today on defense

For example you have the Thunder when Cason Wallace or Isiah Joe is on the floor with the starters, you have 5 people in the game who shoot 38% from 3 or better. You pre-rotate to stop the roll or you drop to cut off the midrange for shai and there is a plethora of threes and drives available. Shai throws it to Chet on the wing, your team rotates. Chet can beat the rotation of the dribble, now you’re in scramble mode. Chet from here can pull up a middy, post up, or dish to opposite corner. Defenders are only allowed to be cones. Combine that with lack of effort and general competitiveness and you have a shooting contest/skills competition. But because Rashad and Sheryl are saying it, well he was average player with a short career and she starred in the WNBA, so their opinions are irrelevant.
Most of the best ex-player coaches weren’t stars. Kerr, Udoka and Lue never averaged more than 15 in a season either. So trying to ascribe basketball knowledge to Rashad’s NBA success as a player, is misguided logic. You have high IQ stars, but some aren’t. I don’t consider Ja Morant or Jayson Tatum high IQ hoopers. Not all these dudes are Kobe, MJ, Magic, Bird, Jokic, Lebron, Stockton, Duncan, CP3 etc. Many of these new players are coming into the NBA after 1 year of college, so they’re grasp of the game isn’t level with their skill and talent.

It’s funny. Past nba players are so mad that they are actually saying that guys are only getting stats because of how the game is played. It’s never the greats, it’s always tester years role players. It’s hilarious that McCants actually said Joker isn’t as good as people say he is? 😂

Jokic, Embiid, Kawhi, Curry, Shai, Luka, Kyrie, Tatum, Butler, Giannis. How many players can guard those guys 1 on 1? If you're going to send help who do you help off of? The role players today are good enough to lead non playoff teams (with today's ruleset) from almost any previous era or at least be a 2nd or 3rd option

This guy mccants gotta be acting. Players are faster more skilled more athletic more stamina and everyone on the court will absolutely kill you and they all shoot it. The role players then and now are not the same so the defense cannot be the same. If u overcommit you die in a split second.

If joker didn’t average 9 assists a game they MIGHT have a point but Gil is right the floor is too spread out and somebody is going to get open. They act like these shooters are just sitting and waiting, the nuggets players move great without the ball so everything they’re saying to counter Gil is pointless because it won’t work ESPECIALLY with the rules of the game currently

The issue is you have to take away something. You can give up 35 and 15 assists. Give up the 35pts or 15 assists but not both because obviously staying on isn’t working

todays game is dean smith's 4 corners; only the majority of the players have good to great shooting ability - 4 corners was tough to defend because of the spacing and was designed as a possesion/clock tool if you were ahead in the game - you basically played keep away with the ball because there was no shot clock - a team could run tons of time of the play clock by spreading the floor and forcing a team to defend the entire half court to try and regain possession of the ball.

They ultimately, after much stubbornness, admit that somebody is going to be left open in that type of reactionary defense, but fail to acknowledge that shooting skill across the 5 players on the court is simply way higher today, AND NEEDS TO BE ACCOUNTED FOR in modern defensive schemes.
Both offenses and defenses continue to get more sophisticated, and wrinkles and counters get more complex to address.

GIL IS 100% Spot on - BUT - THIS IS THE PROBLEM - freedom of movement - enforcement against defensive holding and hand-checking, allowing offensive players more space and opportunities to score. The fact you can't cut your man off, is one of the reasons why LUKA can dominate the way he does.

Lol freaking exactly. The reason why 2016 cavs actually beat 2016 warriors was they switched on everything to neutralize their shooters getting open. These old heads think defense is lazy while teams today are screening multiple times. Curry is one of the best conditioned athletes. Try chasing him all game and call this era lazy.
