At minimum handchecks should be brought back. No air push offs though. Offensive players in todays NBA are too skillful to have this many rules to help them move and score
Half court offense was objectively harder to produce in the 60s..the officiating on the offense was so strict and at the same time they allowed the defense to do whatever...the reason why scoring was so high is because they ran so much...the fast break was the most important aspect of offense back then...which is why the pace was so high...most offensive sets lasted at MOST 10 seconds

They averaged the same total free throw attempts in the some years during the 80s and EVEN MORE in some years of the 90s than today.

Players are more skilled in today's game but rules just amplify the offensive players skill set.. when you can't touch a offensive player or have to give him freedom to move around the court it's easier.. if defenders were allowed to get up into players offensive would look way different.. we seen Boston totally shut down the nets a few seasons ago when the refs let them touch KD them

@wnnfrhrw4452 I think players are more skilled in the sense of they're more players (as a whole) who shoot , more athletic than there ever was. Step back jumpers (not the travel and euro steps are more common to more players than just a handful of guys. It's obvious mid range shooting and post moves have declined. I don't agree with Gil about the rules tho.. clearly the rules favor the offense..
and that Stat about all those top team's who had all time ppg, is misleading. For example that 81 nuggets team that avg 121 ppg was the only team in the league that avg 121 ppg right now we have 5 teams thus season who avg 120 or more ppg and 17 teams that avg 115 ppg compared to the 81/82 season where only 1 team avg 120+ppg and no team avg over 115 ppg. So many variables.
The carrying and traveling makes offense WAY easier before you even start getting into hand checking and defenders.

@@mattc5647 the players AI played with WERE good players, they just weren’t scorers. They ran a defensive system and let AI handle the scoring. Being a great scorer doesn’t automatically make you a better basketball player or even a good basketball player. Jordan Poole is a better scorer than 90% of the League but might not even last on a roster back in the day with his terrible defense, terrible basketball IQ and terrible attitude. But in today’s NBA he’s a max player. The players today more skilled offensively but they’re not “better”
Yes, AI got 30, Kobe got 30, scorers got 30, Wade got 30, etc. But we have known those guys to be tough shot takers. You know why they were tough shots, because they had to do it over good defenders. It's very hard to do it now. You can't even jump straight towards a shooter anymore even if you don't foul them, coz then if you land under them, it's a foul. Remember, that Zaza Pachulia rule? If you're playing honest defense and you have to worry about your landing spot, too, that makes defense even harder.

Yes the offense skill level of this generation is insane 200% better but defense went down 200% too. The game is getting watered down into a shooting game instead of basketball.

Ball handling…? Liberal enforcement of the rules certainly aid and abet what fans consider skill.
The gather step, palming of the ball, extra steps for step backs and side steps | all are considered advanced skill.
It isn’t advanced, players in previous eras where certainly capable and talented enough, but you aren’t going to be efficient, effective, and get better at something you don’t work on because it is illegal.

So maybe Cylde Drexler didn’t gather step, palm the ball, and do a ton of unnecessary dribbling to get a shot off.
Similarly, you won’t find Shai Gilgeous Alexander posting up against a heavier stronger defender, using advance post footwork ~ while that part of the game is gone…. Shai certainly has the talent and athletic ability to do this.
Similarly guys like Drexler had the same physical gifts that would allow him to be as creative with his handles under the modern rules.
It’s the same argument both ways. Media and their cronies like Gil are constantly selling this “more skilled” narrative, which is a subjective assessment and not an empirical fact.

What would dictate that? How about how many free throw attempts are averaged per team today compared to the 80s? One year in the 80s they had the same total free throws attempted as today AND EVEN MORE ONE YEAR IN THE 90s than today.

Well, a couple things being missed. Realize that offense was still the main way to go during the 80s. Then, the Bad Boy Pistons came up, and they showed you can get away with being extremely physical defensively, because the rules and officiating allowed you to be. More teams began to realize that the rules favored that kind of play rather than an offense based style like the TMC Warriors, so you got more teams being successful playing a grit and grind style with a physical defense, hence why scoring became lower and lower. I mean, if you're going to say the reason for increased scoring is due to evolution and higher level of play, then why is it that scoring was so high in the 80s and then dropped in the 90s and early 2000s? Did basketball suddenly stop evolving and developing with more and more talent coming in for 15 years, and then talented player began to come in again starting in 2005? Obviously not.
Rules changes starting in the mid 2000s began to favor the offense more and more, and teams began to realize more and more that the rules no longer favored the grit and grind physical defense style of play, so teams began to change up their personnel and team styles, hence why scoring began to go up year after year. It took some time following the rules changes, most teams can't just switch up styles right away as that often also requires switching of personnel, but it began with the Phoenix Suns, and evolved into the Warriors, and now every team is trying to take advantage of how much the rules and officiating favors the offense rather than physical defense, so you have scoring explosions.

Interesting, that 7 seconds or less Phoenix Suns would be DEAD LAST in terms of pace if they played in 2023-2024.
In the 1960’s the NBA had a very fast pace, although the shooting percentages were lower and efficiency was much lower. Yet the scoring was very high. Only second to the modern NBA in terms of overall scoring. Even higher than the 80’s.
Not all teams adopted Detroit’s physical style of defense ~ not every team embraced team concepts like the triangle offense, although both were successful and led teams to championships.
I would suggest the pace of play along with the rule changes have been more impactful than physical defense.
I also don’t believe guys are that much more skilled. They are “allowed” to do more (gather step, liberal carry and travel rules, almost zero offensive foul calls, flopping and drawing of fouls by offensive players who initiate contact) combined with analytics and the proliferation of 3pt shots.
The skill argument is a strawman argument. If players really more skilled and more athletic than why continue to enforce rules that aid offense and punish defense. It’s even difficult to play good team defense because of the way the game is structured.
In today’s game skill is simply marginalized because there’s not a ton of resistance to scoring.

Overall Pace of play is directly affected by the rules and how teams take advantage of them, hence why it slowed down so much in the 90s. You see, the showtime Lakers were a high pace high scoring team, and the Pistons understood they couldn’t beat them at their own game but the rules and officiating allowed them to play a drastically different style and have success. On the other hand, with today’s rules and officiating, you can’t just do a drastically different style like the Pistons and find success.

In the 1960s those teams avg about 119 points on 115 shots. And the league shot 40-42%. They scored so much not because of bad defense, but primarily because the pace of play was crazy. Most of these current players could probably only play one game per week at that pace.
I love Gil but he’d never admit the nba defense is subpar. Yes scorers are better but there is little resistance during the regular season. Kenyon actually makes the most sense in these discussion

i watched the denver vs celtics game and they played an intense game both offensively and defensively im with kenyon its want to and pride if ppl are more skilled n athletic same translates to defense u gotta want to stop someone both individually and as a team. also the rules are against playing defense tuff and physicality.

That's my entire point; for in The 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, e.g., Defending has been viewed as a "skill": hence, why certain players from those eras have gotten reputations for being "defensive specialists."
Note that one cannot be a "specialist" in anything whatsoever, including Defense, even without one having some sort of "skill" within this selfsame speciality.

The avg score in the 90s dropped to like 80-90 ppg until the early 2000s when scoring jumped to like 100+ ppg.

The early 2000's was actually the lowest scoring and lowest pace era in NBA history. The Laker Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, T-Mac, AI days.

Even if Gilbert is correct, and offenses have more scorers out on the court that means teams need better two-way players so they can put the ball in the basket on offense and on defense they can actually make stops. There’s only so many three level scores that can be on the court at the same time without messing up the spacing.

I understand that the NBA is an offensive game but defense can be played. Just understand the rules that are set and work around that. Footwork,hand placement, and remember not to jump. The Offense gets flustered when they feel smothered and uncomfortable.

In the 80s and 90s you had multiple scorers on a team. The Celtics had Bird and McHale in the mid 20's and DJ, Ainge, and Parish between 14 and 17 PPG. The Sixers had Dr J, Moses Malone, and Andrew Toney averaged in the 20's who all could drop 40 on you, and Cheeks averaged around 15PPG. The lakers had Magic, Worthy, Kareem, and Scott. Several teams in the nineties as well.

The lateral quickness needed to play defense is extremely important in todays game because back then most guards went north and south instead of the hesi to the left, in-n-out,tween, dribble, snatch back.
