  • This is how I fix the air suspension that wouldn’t go down. This may be the same for other Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler products. Other makes and models may be similar.

    Good job trimming the hose going to the press-loc on the pump. That's a common leak point many people wouldn't think to trim. The brass connections on the manifold block are called compression fittings. Glad to see you figured it out and helped others troubleshoot. 👍

    Thanks for posting this video! Was having the exact same issue (GC would raise just fine but wouldn't go down below normal ride height and had frequent "service air suspension immediately" messages) and likely would have followed the same path of replacing the valve block first if I hadn't seen your video. I was unaware of the reversing valve on the pump. Replaced the pump and refilled the tank with UHP nitrogen and now the car will go both down and up like it is supposed to.

  • @FearlessTrailhawk
    @FearlessTrailhawk Před 7 měsíci +2

    So when you unscrewed each fitting from the valve block, did each bag lose its air? I keep hearing how these and the 90* fittings are an easy fix for leaks, but nobody talks about if the system holds air while you have bits unplugged, which if it dumps, requires a nitro refill which isn't readily as quick and easy for the average joe to do.

    • @Nelsons-Garage
      @Nelsons-Garage  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Yes, the bags will deflate when the fittings are removed. If you can’t or don’t have nitrogen you can use air from a compressor and it will work fine but remember air has moisture in it and may cause issues down the road.

    Question, I have a ram 1500 that has two of those tanks, under the truck. Does the Jeep have two tanks as well? I'm trying to determine what size tank I need and how much nitrogen needs to be in it in order to refill my entire system because I have to replace both the air compressor and the distribution block. Thanks
    The dealer quoted me $4,800 to replace the air compressor and the distribution block. I bought the air compressor and distribution block from RMT for $400 plus core. @Nelsons-Garage  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Its hard to tell without a scan, but the suspension does go down in aero on the highway. if this doesn't happen in a timely manor it would display the service immediately. This is tough to guess at, but i would first check the links at each control arm making sure they are not loose or broken. otherwise, it sounds as if the compressor is doing its job going up and down and the module is communicating to the compressor. the only thing would be time, if the compressor runs too long, the service light comes on. leading me towards the compressor and the valve within the compressor becoming slow or leaky (inside the system). I would think through time the service light will start coming on more frequent. this is all just a guess without a scan.... good luck and let me know what you find.

    Awesome explanation of the process and how it works! My 2014 Summit just did the same thing this morning. Ran all morning on the way to work and wouldn't turn off trying to seemingly correct an issue even when I turned it off. I found the 40a fuse pulled it out so it wouldn't unalive itself and my battery like it did my 2011. Reinserted the 40a fuse now it won't turn on at all. I only assume a new compressor is to be had. Would be great to know if my valve system worked and I just needed the pump, "woe is me". And you're correct RMT is great company that deals with Chrysler products I purchased their copper fittings for the lines awhile back just now ended up using them a few months ago. My question to you, I'm iffy but willing to learn to use the nitrogen tank to fill up the tank on board the jeep so I don't rely on the dealer anymore. Where do I buy the tank and the couplings ? I've looked up a few places online already that look promising but what happens when I need to store the rest I don't need after I fill it up? Is it safe to store in a basements or garages and such?

      One more question if I may, you mentioned when the airbags are empty you filled the tank. When the bags are empty is the jeep at its lowest setting, entry/exit? Or did you have it on a lift with the wheels and suspension free of its weight? Or did you purge the system completely and just filled up to 120psi of nitrogen? Sorry to be so anal with the questions, I just wanna do it right like you did.

    • @Nelsons-Garage
      @Nelsons-Garage  Před rokem +1

      I had the air bags as empty as possible. My system wouldn’t go down to park mode anymore, but when you take the pump out one of the lines goes to the tank. Any pressure in the tank will come out then. And I did all of this on a hoist, there may have been some residual nitrogen/air still in the bags. But the system isn’t that picky.

      No, the system shouldn't have a pressure difference due to temperature. This is why there is nitrogen used. Nitrogen doesn't contain moisture like air so it doesn't fluctuate pressure with temperature. If you used air to fill your system, then yes i could see that happening.

      That’s hard to say, is there any warning on the dash or codes? Can you hear the compressor running when you try to move the suspension? First thing would be to check the fuses and relay I think there are 3 of them.

    • @Nelsons-Garage
      @Nelsons-Garage  Před 5 měsíci

      its just a guess without a scan done on the system. but start with leaks, checking the bags and lines for leaks, (from the valve block to the bags) each bag has it own air circuit but they both need to be checked for leaks. do that by trying to air up the suspension an listen for the leaks (sometimes you can hear the leak) and a visual inspect of the lines and connections. next would really need a scan to make sure the computer is calling for the rear to be inflated. if it is, it could be the valve block (there would be a code). you see if the front will go up and down, that tells me the pump is working properly. it would have to be a leak (n both rear bags or lines feeding the bags), the computer controlling the valves to fill the bags or the valve block itself.

    • @Nelsons-Garage
      @Nelsons-Garage  Před 5 měsíci

      With all that said, make sure the fuses are good, i think there are 3. and the height switches (links) located near the bags are hooked up and not broken.

    • @Nelsons-Garage

      If your suspension goes up but not down, it is most likely the reversing valve within the pump. So pump replacement would be needed. I haven’t taken the pump apart so I’m not sure how to repair just the valve in side the pump.

    • @Nelsons-Garage
      @Nelsons-Garage  Před rokem +1

      If the Jeep goes to exit level but won’t go up it would most likely be the pump. There is a valve in the pump that switches to make it go up or down. If that valve is stuck, the Jeep will not go up or it won’t go down depending on what position the valve is stuck. Just make sure there is no leaks in the system, air lines, air bags. Usually if there is a line or air bag leak it will only affect that one corner of the Jeep. Hope that helps.

    • @Nelsons-Garage
      @Nelsons-Garage  Před rokem +1

      Yes, just because the pump is running doesn’t mean it’s working properly. Usually if the pump runs and the Jeep is not going to the position it wants, the pump will overheat and cause the message in the dash. The cause can be the reversing valve in the pump itself, a broken line, a leaking air bag itself, or possibly the height sensor at the axle. Make sure the sensor links are not broken or loose. Also you mentioned it was in exit height, is that really where it’s sitting? Or did the air come out of the system? I would think if it’s in exit height and it won’t go up, but the pump tries to go up, and then the error message in the dash trips, I would go for the pump. Ask the shop if they see a switching valve error in their scan tool.

    • @Nelsons-Garage
      @Nelsons-Garage  Před rokem +1

      @@runituphotty216 one more thought, rear codes make sense. The system tries to lift the rear first. Not the whole Jeep at once. When lowering, it lowers the front first. So it there is a rear code it most likely will be the pump because the switching valve is not allowing air to transfer to the rear therefore the rear isn’t lifting causing a code there also.

    Thanks so much for posting this. Recently got the dreaded "Service Air Suspension System Immediately" warning on our 2014 Jeep GC after weather dropped below freezing. After reading these comments I think I know where I messed up. A few months ago did a fix for the leaking 90 degree fittings on top of the front struts and likely leaked them out. Also didn't refill the pressure tank. Do you think water could have gotten into the system and froze something up?
    Just for reference this Dorman installation video was informative. Talks about using a bidirectional scan tool to depressurize the system, and check pressure levels after installation. Of course they are pitching their compete pump and valve body assembly.

    Hello, I have my 2018 GC HA around 96000 miles I got this warning, took to a dealer they replaced the valve block for 1800$ and said the problem is solved I paid and checked my car it was not solved. They took it back immediately and checked 4 days and the issue was not fixed, when I questioned, they came back with 3400$ estimate for a possible compressor replacement. 😣 they mentioned that they took a less price route to replace valve block, I don't understand how these dealers service department cannot figure if it out before hand. If a valve block or compressor valve was causing it and they call it a world class inspection. 😢
    Have to figure out a way now.
    Some times it works fine but it keeps coming back. No fuses were blown out ever.
    Auto/Park mode while lowering is where the service code was triggering from what I understand.

      Hope this will get figured out for you. the valve block controls each corner of the suspension (sending the up and down air to each corner), the pump has a valve that controls the up and down function. if you are randomly having this issue it will be a matter of time when the pump will need to be replaced.
