I looked for the legion 5 for months earlier this year and couldn’t find it anywhere. I started looking for other options in the price range and, as I was mainly interested in a high wattage 3060 laptop, I finally went with the G15 which was on sale at the time. I’m quite happy with the performance of the ryzen 7, 165Hz model.

Great performance and Great battery life! What else do you need? The only thing that stopped me from buying Dell was it's screen and need for a separate Linux software to adjust things since I use Linux a lot. But Legion doesn't have as much battery life as Dell so it's a tradeoff I had to make! Dell G15 is a great choice!

It is a no brainer to me. I will pick the Legion 5 over the Dell G15. Dell purposely place the CPU and GPU facing the keyboard so that it is difficult for the end-user to clean the heatsink and redo the thermal paste in future. That is a big turnoff for me. Being said, from thermal imaging 10:12 , the Legion 5 is blowing alot of hot air to the sides where people use their mouse , it is good in the winters, but probably not comfortable in long gaming runs in other times.

I've been really happy with it, the battery life is much nicer than my old msi ge73 that never went more than 3 hours even when it was new. its also crazy going from a quad core that never goes over 3.4 ghz to an octo core that sits at 3.9-4 in most games (in my testing so far)

Got is on sale for about $400 less than the Legion (if I could have got one), and have been happy with it. Mine has the 165Hz screen, and it is very pretty. I agree with your assessment of the included software, the Alienware is next to useless, and has one additional issue that if you let the computer sleep it will break the keyboard lighting until you uninstall and reinstall the Alienware. Wish Dell would get the move on and fix that. Otherwise it has been a great machine.

I would say the biggest difference to the Legion is that the Legion keeps the fans on at a lower temperature, so at idle it gets cooler. I'm uncertain which is better for the machine, the G15 has smaller temperature swings so less thermal cycling, however the Legion has a lower average temperature.

For all of you undecisive fellas out there keep this in mind when deciding between these two laptops..
Dell G15's new design has granted the laptop with good thermals at last. Jarrod isn't reviewing the top-end G15 which is the one shipped with an RGB keyboard and a 165hz screen 3ms latency which is a beautiful panel and even better than Legion5's.. response time wise.
Also, Dell has taking it up a notch in regards to its update scheduling and with the latest bios and vbios updates the Dell G15 has been granted with an even better cooling and now the RTX 3060's TDP has been increased from 125w to 130w while providing an outstanding 10hr battery life with proper settings (irrespective of it having a 120hz or 165hz panel)
**Neither of these updates have been applied to Jarrod's G15 and still, it performed quite well.
Last but not least, the amazing pricing $1079.. (lowest price it's been so far)
    .. for a Ryzen7 5800H,
RTX 3060, 86wh battery, RGB keyboard and a 165hz screen is just unbeatable.

I recommend the Dell G15. Lenovo has a major quality control issue. I ordered one in Sept of 2021 and the GPU failed after 20 days. I returned-repurchased and the spacebar on the second one didn't work. I again returned-replaced, and the touchpad didn't work on the third Lenovo. During that time, I lucky hedged my bet and purchased a Dell G15 during the Cyber Monday sales and it has been working and running fine. It's all been a massive mess. Lenovo's customer service is horrible and I'm still waiting on my last refund. Due to shortages (I think), they basically told me to go away and that they could no longer help me. 3 defective computers, 50+ hours on the phone and 0 to show for it. For piece of mind and longevity I'd stick with Dell.

The Legion has higher CPU frequencies whilst running cooler.. that's a big win IMO and latencymon still passes and it just performs better overall. Hitting 100 degrees in the G15 at 3400 mhz is NOT a good thing. In my Alienware M17 R3, I can sustain 100% load on all 8 cpu cores of a 10980HK, no undervolt, Cooler master CF-17 cooler though, at 4.3ghz at 88-90 degrees at max fan speed or 95 degrees at the performance fan speed mode which sounds less than half as loud in DB. If I undervolt I can easily get 4.4ghz 100% sustained load. But it idles quite high, around 50 celsius or more, which is why I was so surprised how well it does under load.. the vapour chamber in action I guess. After this laptop's thermals, nothing much else has impressed me anymore.

@@samgoff5289 You have no idea what you are talking about. Jarrod's tests of maximum frequencies under load are with fans at full speed, so it's all completely relative. On performance mode it's just a pleasant whir anyway, even soft game music out of a portable speaker overtakes it, and I can sustain 4.3ghz at 100% load on 8 cores in that mode. The thermals of my laptop are exceptional, and my cinebench scores equal those of beasts like the GT76 that had a desktop 9900K in it. With complete and utter quietness, I can sustain between 3.5 - 3.8ghz on all cores under load, that's without fans ramping up at *all*, quiet mode. It's the quietest laptop I have ever heard at that sort of speed. I basically play all my games and RPCS3 emulation in complete silence, and I can produce my massive music projects in complete silence.
I only use full speed mode for testing purposes like any other bench marker, and I occasionally engage performance mode which as I said is less than half the volume of full speed mode and not unpleasant at all, when I am running an RPCS3 game that is hard to emulate, such as God of War 3 upscaled to 4K. This laptop also keeps the full speed 2080S at perfect temps, and yes, an 150 watt 2080S blows away a mobile 3060..I have set throttling of the 2080S to 77 degrees and it has never ever happened.
I paid 4 grand AUD for my laptop, almost 3 grand off, with 10980HK, Win 10 Pro, 32GB ram, 2080S, and a single 2TB SSD. The laptops in this review are actually more expensive when equipped with similar specs. Yeah, I got that 3 grand off in the end of life sale but who cares? The only difference in the R4 was the 3080, and I wasn't going to pay 2 or so grand more for 1080P gaming when a 2080S can play any 1080P game at ultra and will so for the lifetime of this laptop. I can still blow the pants off almost any current laptop and I have had it 8 months already.
Now to really drive it home that you are a tool who just felt he'd try be aggressive and insulting me to start an argument and be an ass - Jarrod, in his entire history of videos (of which I have seen every single one), has NEVER reviewed an EIGHT core laptop that can sustain the CPU's factory rated all core turbo speeds without any undervolting, and he has barely ever reviewed one that can sustain its top speed even with every trick in the trade and maximum undervolting. It is really *really* rare, so if you think this laptop has poor thermals, you need a head check, quick. Only desktop replacements like the Asus mothership and GT76 have been able to sustain the sort of frequencies my thin and light 17" does.
      Jealous, much?

@@lordquaggan That's what I love about Alienware, they allow everything to run at max power and never disable undervolting. No bios tricks needed!
That said, I really dislike that it only has 4 USB ports and I don't like the new X17 which is missing secondary key lighting and a number pad, and has ALL ports at the back. I'll be sticking with this M17 R3 till the 3 year warranty I added is expired or till it literally dies, but I do need a second laptop for travelling. A nice 14 or 15" gaming laptop that also has low latencymon results for music production. Since the world should open up for traveling again soon, I'd like to get something within the next 3 months I think. The M17 will stay as my home work and gaming laptop :) This is why I still love watching every review Jarrod does, and would still probably watch them even if I had 2 laptops, just to keep up with tech news and portables. Plus, he does the best laptop reviews, hands down.

I have the same G15, but use a docking station 99% of the time with a gaming monitor, so not that worried about the screen and keyboard.
