XDJ-RX2 Review: Is Pioneer’s Standalone DJ System Worth It?

    The RX2 is the second iteration of the original XDJ-RX, which was kind of a big deal when it was released back in 2015. For DJs wanting to enter the Rekordbox ecosystem (but not wanting to buy more expensive, separate components), it makes for a logical choice.
    Being a standalone system, the XDJ-RX2 plays directly from USB stick and no laptop is required. This setup simulates a full Nexus setup (though, it’s more comparable to Pioneer’s mid-grade hardware… for example, the mixer section resembles the DJM-450).
    Pioneer has made a handful of improvements to this unit, which brings it to a level that feels more like a professional tool than a budget compromise. For the right DJ, the XDJ-RX2 is a great choice.
    This version makes several improvements over the original RX. The first thing you will probably notice is the addition of better performance pads. There are now 8 instead of four, and they feel more like “beat pads” as opposed to the clicky buttons in the previous version.
    The RX2 also brings over some great features from the flagship CDJ-2000NXS2 players… including its high-quality touch screen (providing needle search, QWERTY search, track filter and shortcut functionality), and the surrounding browse controls. Instead of a shared middle “Browse” knob, everything functions like a CDJ in this regard (except for a small change in loading a track to a deck… see the video above).
    The ethernet port (for Pro DJ Link) has been removed, which probably won’t affect too many people who buy this unit.
    DJs who have club and festival aspirations will think that the XDJ-RX2 makes a lot of sense. The layout is familiar, and all but identical, to the “standard” setup a DJ will encounter as part of a larger scale show.
    Since a full NXS2 setup costs something like 6 thousand dollars, it doesn’t seem so bad to shell out $1699 for a functionally-similar system. It also functions as a controller (via Rekordbox DJ), if you choose to bring a laptop along for the ride. In this sense, it may not be the most budget-friendly option around (since the whole no-laptop thing is a big selling point, here).
    The RX2 may be less ideal for some mobile DJs, speaking to its general size and weight. It also might be cumbersome for smaller-scale shows where you are sharing a booth with other DJs.
    But for the DJ who wants a “home version” of the industry standard, or wants an all-in-one, non-laptop solution for DJing… the XDJ-RX2 fits the bill.
    See Reviews: amzn.to/2JDwGeW
    Frequently Asked Questions:
    What music formats does the XDJ-RX2 support?
    The RX2 supports MP3, WAV, WAV, and AIFF. It plays directly from USB key, will load tracks through USB from your laptop, or will “play directly” from your laptop with a Rekordbox DJ license.
    Is it worth upgrading to the RX2 if I have the original XDJ-RX?
    This will be up to you to determine, but probably not. It’s a lot of money to shell out for 4 extra performance pads and an enhanced touch-screen. However, if you don’t have either unit… this is the one to buy.
    Should I get separate Pioneer components instead?
    You could; for example, a DJM-450 and XDJ-700 combo. But this costs several hundred more dollars, you take a downgrade on jog wheels, and you introduce more setup time.
    Is the XDJ-RX2 DVS compatible?
    Surprisingly, Pioneer has omitted DVS support in this unit. It is not licensed for using timecode, not even with Rekordbox DJ.

    I have a question about the QSC speaker mounted behind you. Is that a K8? Also how is it in a room of your size? I’m considering getting a large qsc or EV speaker for my room (I live in a fraternity) and I’m wondering if it would fill the room with crisp sound and heart thumping bass

    • @PassionateDJ
      @PassionateDJ  Před 6 lety +2

      Hey Daran! It's a K12... there's actually a pair of them in here, but one is out of frame. :)
      The room I have them in is 1100 sq. ft. with ~8ft. tall ceilings, and they are more than I need (though if I were throwing events, I'd add a KSUB or similar.)
      For not having the sub, they sound really good, and have a really full lower-midbass/upper sub-bass if you have the "deep" setting selected. Midrange and top end is perfect; I love the way they sound.
      They also seem really willing to "throw" sound a long distance without having the volume up too far... hard to explain. I find myself surprised at how well I can hear things at low volume when I'm standing quite far away.
      Looks like there is a "version 2" out, now:
      amzn.to/2MKo8Ey
      To better answer your question, I've used a single K12 to power small house parties and such, and it's more than up to the task.
      Hope this helps!

This controller in a case weighs in at about 50Lbs+. I just DJ'd a gig with this and it's perfect for that. Only thing missing is flac file support which Pioneer will never give you on a stand along controller. I guess if you need flac file support, you can always use Rekordbox DJ with your laptop. Why didn't you mention the compatibility with rekordbox performance with a laptop? There's a lot more functionality added when using that, as far as effects, looping and such. Seems like it should have at least gotten a little mention, especially when mentioning it's limited standalone function in those areas

    • @PassionateDJ
      @PassionateDJ  Před 6 lety

      Perhaps, though I wouldn't recommend someone to buy this to use as a controller in that way. It's functionally equivalent to the DDJ-RR, which costs less than half the price, and is much easier to move around.
      Or, you could get a significant "upgrade" by getting a DDJ-1000. Not only do you save $500, you gain two channels and you still have nifty onboard displays.

      The guy who lent me the XDJ-RX2 is in a band called Cryztal Grid, and they have connected both to high-end club rigs and recently played an 8000+ festival in Athens, Ohio. I heard no complaints of sound quality! (Though, admittedly, he didn't have turntables connected.)
      By the way, Cryztal Grid is a pretty cool electronic duo which combines DJing elements with saxophone, live drums, and MCing. They're pretty dope, so I always try to give them a plug. :) Learn about 'em here: passionatedj.com/episode-141-cryztal-grid/

      There will ALWAYS be another version around the corner. Accept it or you'll be on the fence for the rest of your life. If you just got into DJing you won't need all the bells and whistles yet for quite some time as you will be learning the basic stuff for a while. Pioneer gear have a very stable used market where prices don't move much after the initial price drop. Get yourself a used XDJ-RX and find out if DJing is for you, and if so, what kind of DJ you aim to be. If you take care of the unit, you will probably get most of, or all your money back within a couple of years. It doesn't get cheaper than that. As a pro DJ for many years I have the NXS2 setup and the equivalent modular setup to the RX2: 2 XDJ-700 & the DJM-450. In comparison it has less features than the RX2 and is a few 100 bucks more expensive. I mainly use what's installed in the clubs I play, which means everything Rekordbox compatible since 2009 with a few exceptions. Then and when required to, I bring my own gear, and in 19 times out of 20, I bring my small setup instead of the NXS2. Why? It's still better than half of what's installed in many clubs, and it's MUCH easier to carry and setup than a full NXS2 setup. I also don't need to feel the worries that using my personal $6000 gear in an environment I can't control will bring. Finally, all the stuff I need to perform is on the XDJ-700's as the pretty much equals the CDJ-2000 Nexus with a touch screen and a QUERTY search. The DJM-450 lacks the Booth out, and the very few times I really need that, I bring my DJM-800 in a back pack. That is not a problem with any of the RX/RX2/RX3 as they all have the boot out. I hope this little rant helps you to decide to spend some money to get into DJing now rather than later :) .

      It mainly depends on your requirements and budget.
      A used XDJ-R1 would give you standalone (non-laptop) functionality, but it's getting a bit "long in the tooth".
      Another way to stay laptop free is to buy individual components. Personally, I went with:
      * (2) Pioneer XDJ-1000s || amzn.to/2I69h3q
      * Pioneer DJM-850 || amzn.to/2M85yoF
      Of course, this type of setup is more expensive, coming in at about 2 grand. However, I was able to find refurbished players and a used mixer, saving me several hundred dollars.
      You could also replace the 1000s with XDJ-700s and get a cheaper Pioneer mixer. I liked the 850 because I use four channels and I like Traktor certification.
      If you don't care about being tethered to a laptop, the DDJ-1000 is indeed the bee's knees...

  • @HartogLeon

    Why are dimensions and weight downsides? Look at it from a different perspective ! I bought myself this XDJ-RX2 because it's only a 4th of the weight of my flightcased NXS(2)-set, so I can easily carry it to those harder-to-reach gigs.
    It's lighter than 2 CDJ's together, and weighs slightly more than a DJM-900 NXS2.

    • @PassionateDJ
      @PassionateDJ  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey Leon. You're not wrong. :)
      When doing these reviews, I need to consider all types of DJs and the different scenarios which they will encounter. The dimensions and weight aren't downsides when comparing them to your previous setup. However, if someone is used to rocking a DDJ-RB, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the huge difference there.
      At the very end of the video, I do make it a point to mention that the score is deceptively low because of dimensions and weight. For a lot of DJs, this is the right choice for sure.

    • @HartogLeon
      @HartogLeon Před 6 lety

      Thank you for telling me I'm not wrong. I was so worried I would be.....
      You should not compare it with a DDJ-RB. That is an empty shell with no displays, no processors, no connectivity, no power unit. Nothing! It's like comparing a scooter with a bicycle. In the video you make it look like the XDJ is impossible to carry. I just carry it over my shoulder, like a handbag.

    If you aren't bothered by using laptop them I'd recommend a DDJ 1000 for anyone wanting something that's even closer to club standard CDJ Nexus 2 setups. The mixer is 4 channel and has way more effects. And is stand alone like this. The decks are the closest to a cdj and are the full size mechanical. You just have to use a laptop.

      Tbone Beats Denon kills it dead in the water, it has a touch screen, a sata hard-drive bay, sd slot, 4 us connections, is standard 4 channel, onboard effects unit, go watch laidback luke he has a video on the unit which pretty much explains what's all there. I used to be a pioneer fanboy but ever since I switched over to the denon primes, I haven't looked back. It takes some getting used to the prime software and workflow but the prime 4 is compatible with recordbox, serato and all major software platforms. I already pre-ordered my prime 4 and if it's anything like the prime gear I already have, I will be traveling light AF in the future.

    • @Lalaland.001
      @Lalaland.001 Před 5 lety +1

      @@markkelvisar9544 Never had any problem with lag at all, I used to be a pioneer fanboy myself, but the sc 5000's are way better, in terms of built quality, ease of use, and downright reliability, mine were still playing after having been in literal pouring rain for over 5 hours. My nexus give out after one beer having been spilled on it and an expensive repair to boot. I will give you the software is not like recordbox. But prime is compatible with recordbox, you can import all your data without any problems to prime, hotcues and all. It takes some getting used to but it does all it needs to do. I have been using the sc 5000's for nearly 2 years now and have yet to encounter any problems. If you have any doubt about denon they used to be the industry standard that was until pioneer started paying big names to use their gear, the rest is history. Also if you ever get a chance to check out a denon sc 5000 in real life, tell me how their built quality of the sc 5000 is, they are imho better built then any plastic pioneer, the sc 5000 are full metal jackets. The prime 4 is no exception to that rule as it's chassis is full metal as well. So in terms of built quality they are ahead of pioneer. You pay more for pioneer because of their name, not because of more features or built quality.

    Sounds great until you use Rekordbox and find out how much of a piece of crap it is. At least with Serato I was able to use my old controller right out of the box and only took a little setup and analyzing to get up to speed. Rekordbox audio drivers however will not work correctly with my current Mac OS 10.4 and the software constantly freezes and I have 16 GB of RAM and tons of disk space. Not happy at all. $1700 and I have yet to use it at a gig, and I bought a replacement controller for my Serato setup and was right back in business within minutes., Pioneer needs to scale down Rekordbox a bit because it is just another new age bloated piece of software. I guess if you can deal with the frustration of the freezing software while you prepare to export files to your thumb drives and use the controller without a computer as it was designed then you should be fine but in my case I would like to use the computer as well to access my full library but I guess I have more to learn about how Rekordbox functionality works. But so far not impressed.
