I got a putting matt this year to use at home and practice for 30-60 minutes before a round. I think it helps me with confidence for those 6’ putts. My last round I made 2 birdies on par 5’s from about 5’-6’. I never get multi birdie rounds so it felt good. I’m about a 16-18 handicap.

When I started get truly into golf back in 2014/15 I watched tons of tutorials online. Most of them focused on swing patterns and techniques. Those videos helped a great deal, but I found myself stagnant with my skills. Once I found videos like yours years back my whole entire game changed. It was definitely an added blessing in disguise that my driver broke back ~2018, the same time I came upon your videos, because it made me focus on all the important parts of the game I was neglecting. Thanks Playa. Many thanks indeed.

Great video. For years I’ve held the belief that the game is best learned from the green backwards to the tee. If you putt with confidence, it takes pressure off your chipping and pitching. If you chip and pitch confidently, it takes pressure off approach shots. Confidence also soars when you can plan shots to where your typical miss hit leaves you with a shot you have confidence in so you can still get up and down.

I know he's right. Now I have to develop the discipline to do it. I have made a commitment to learn how to play golf well. If I'm going to honor that commitment to myself, this is what I need to do. Great stuff. You (Matt) are really helping me understand the game. I will say, I really think one has to start with hitting the ball consistently, otherwise playing is just miserable. I've spent a lot of time getting my swing down and now am going to work on some of the finer points. In hindsight, I think I could have put more time into putting and chip/pitch but I couldn't get myself to do that until I had a reasonable swing.

man I gotta commemd you. 100% correct. I was a regular 3 putter . but 3 years ago I started practicing putting and chipping (live 3 mins from golf course). I would go out for 2 to 3 hours every 2-3 days. place 6 balls all around a hole at 3 foot distance. when i made all 6in a row, I would move to 6 foot (80% goal), 9 foot(50% goal or within 12" and 12 foot(50% goal or within 18".
another drill was 6 balls in a row. 3, 4, 5, 6, 8,10 and 12 feet (really helps seeing the line and consistently hitting it)
putting is far and away my best skill now. i practiced one handed and with a yard stick to control putter path and speed, as a result I can no longer putt 2 handed. get so many ppl trying to putt 1 handed while playing with me. 10-15' my goal is 1' or less to hole, 15-25 foot 2 feet to pin and 25+ goal is 3 foot to pin. I've 1 putt so many putts because of the confidence and lack of pressure. a lot of 25+ foot putts and inside 3 feet rarely missed. cheers and love the series

Such a good lesson learned thanks to the playa.
I had this in mind Saturday when I played a beautiful club in my area with just insanely fast, huge, and undulating greens on almost every hole. The place is crazy. Anyways, I thought about this and holed a lot of the 5-7 footers that I'd normally lip out or slide past the hole. Makes all the difference in score, yeah..but also of my enjoyment of the round. I was confident over the ball even though I would usually be a bit scared of these greens, at least subconsciously. What a difference in score from the last time I played there.
Came 8 inches from my first ace that day too! It's been eluding me for 25 yrs. Maybe next time.

Great video Playa. I consider myself a good putter. I think it's because I don't let my brain tell me the putt is harder than it is. I seldom 3 putt and those are usually when I lag a bogey putt to 3-4 ft and just walk up to bang it in the back of the hole. My hcp dropped dramatically after practicing my wedges inside 100 yds, chipping & being confident on 5ft and in putts. When I see a chip or approach 5 ft and in from the pin I smile cause I know it's going in the hole. My swing is terrible but I keep the ball mostly in play, but my practice before a round is chipping and putting. My hcp with your systems has kept me at 9. You're a Baus!

Hey Matt great videos! I was wondering if you could make a video on your new approach to putting. I’ve been reading putting books recently (unconscious putting) and I’m having a hard time applying the principles of looking at your start line. I usually have a line on my ball and line up with that but I’m a bit confused as to how to find a small target in front of the ball without losing sight of it as I align my putter head. So maybe you could go through how you do it. Thanks !!!

I took your advice and listened to both Putting Out of Your Mind and Golf is Not a Perfect Game (multiple times). The following round of golf was one of the most consistent rounds I've ever played. I kept all swing thoughts out of my head and only focused on a target. What a difference it made! I drastically reduced miss hits, OB shots, and hit far more fairways and greens in regulation than normal.

      easy checklist
      1. am i strong inside 3 feet?
      2. am i strong inside 6 feet?
      3. can i get it out the bunker and hold the green in 1?
      4. am i confident to chip it to inside 5 feet on any given chip?
      5. can i pitch it on the green between 30 yards and my first full wedge?
5a. can i strike the ball consistently with 50% PW?
      6. can i get the ball in play off the tee, away from hazards, allowing a 2nd shot, no OB no hazard?
      7. i know where the short side is and i know how to aim for my shot shape so if it goes straight, i have an easy chip but if it shapes as usual, then i am perfect.
Start at 1 and work down, when you reach an answer that is NO, then practice that

@@patharahan3886 There is lots of opportunity to improve. I’m actually doing better. Real issue is it’s hard to practice, the bunker consistency is not the same as on the course, and I’m afraid I’ll hit someone else on the chipping area. It is a mindset. I’m averaging about 80 on my round, but when I hit it in the bunker I think here comes a double. Earlier in the year I used to hit the ball 1st 45% of the time even though I was trying to hit 3 inches behind ball. I’ve recently changed my weight distribution and doing better, but with some bunkers having enough sand to be able to hit behind the ball, no sand at all, or mud etc. it’s difficult.

I have great make rates on 0-5 feet and above average on 10-40 ft. I’m below average on 6-9 ft. I have no idea which way a ball is going to break, so I’m fine from 5ft in. From 10-14 I have 25% make rate. All my lag putting leaves me inside 2’ and my 25-40ft i’m at 2’. I can put the ball on my line, but if I get line wrong I don’t make putt. That’s why I spend so much time on lag putting, if I can get to 3’ or less I don’t have to worry about line.

I manage a senior league and the major difference between a 20 handicapper and a 30 handicapper is putting. Both have incredibly good holes tee to green and bad holes tee to green. But the 30 handicapper can spend 4-5 shots around the green. There’s one player that could break 90 or even better, but hasn’t a clue putting. The biggest road to improvement is short game.

    • @GolfSidekick
      @GolfSidekick  Před 2 lety

      Should be relative to GIR
More greens in regulation will mean more putts that’s the way it goes
But as a 15 handicap you average 91 so it probably hitting 4-5 greens max per round.
Then you want to get up and down the other 14 holes about 40% of the time by aiming for an easy chip on approaches.
So you want to get up and down 6 times. That’s 6 putts. Then two putt Your greens in regulation and other greens (12) . You can aim for 30 putts. But that won’t only come from putting it will come from chipping and short putting prowess.

Open question for anyone. What's a good option to realistically practice putting? I try to spend an hour before each round on the practice green because ranges obviously don't have them and I don't have one in my yard

The pace and line matching is huge. It drives me crazy when people ask “what do you think, a cup to the right?” Well, it all depends how hard you hit it

If the idea is to hear the sound of the ball in the cup, then how should you practice lag puts?

How about raking vs setting putts? Practice from one place and draw the balls to you vs moving to another position thereby losing the line? Two schools of thought.

Whatever makes you better inside 5-6 feet. Also most people need to move their body so the bending to pick up balls is probably a good thing

i play in a weekly 9 hole league with a partner- best score counts. he has no confidence in any of his putts- be it pace, line, etc. on the reverse, side, i am confident i can make any putt, even the 30 footers. my 18 hole putting average is 30.2. i really want to get it below 30. 2 hours a week just doing the circle and ladder drills. circles from 3 to 8 feet. allowed to miss one starting at 6 feet.
only part of my game i can count on every time i'm on the course
