Where did you get that tuba shirt? My dad's a tuba player and I'd love to get him one.
The Way of the Playa!! Struggled for 3 years. Watched the videos. Recalibrated my mindset. Now carry 5 clubs. 5 7 PW SW Putter. Shot 4 rounds since. 103 94 93 and a great 85 today. This is the round I always knew I had in me. Thank you My Brother!!!
This approach has me excited. I’m a newbie at 2 years, 4-5 lessons, 66yo. I could beat 110 with 105 being my best. However, just had a bionic knee inserted 7 weeks ago and have been chomping at the bit to play a round. Pared my bag down to putter, 6i (150), PW (95), SW (80) and my 3W (200). These are my current distances - add 5-10 yards pre-surgery with the assumption I’ll return there once fully healed.
So, I went out and played my first 9 holes post surgery - this approach is super! Hit a few non-PGA pars on my first expedition. Only thing I felt missing is a gap between my PW and the 6i. An 8i would fill the gap but I’m sticking with basics and intend to play out this season and my healing with just the 5 clubs.
The cool part is by putting my driver away I get to make love to my favorite club - a Ping 3W which I can hit long and straight from tee or fairway. Look out 100, I’m going to bust your ass! Like every other sport, so much is mental and KISS works!
Thanks!!!
That had to be the most accurate drawing of a spine and skull I have ever seen.
hahaha
Matt I'm more in the breaking 80s group but I've watched all the videos in this series and I have to say there's food for thought for all playas here. I've always enjoyed your videos but this series is seriously good and a must-watch for all aspiring golfers. Indeed good golfers can also greatly benefit from your ideas. Congratulations Matt on a very good job!
Removing the ego is the hardest part. It impacts the game in so many ways. Club selection, swinging too hard, hero shots... it all comes from the ego.
For me the hero shots are just for fun. I know im not skilled enough but find it often boring to play it safe :D
6 hcp only carry 7 Clubs. 3w, 4 hybrid, 7, 9, pw, sw, putter.
What a baus...what a playa....what a teacher....WHAT A SERIES!
I've been waiting for this one👍
I've broken 100 with a 93 once with your system. Today I shot 101 due to two bad putts, a few duffs (so frustrating), and a REALLY wet course. Good news though: Zero lost balls and I hit every fairway! This was direct result of not trying to kill it. I WILL get to a steady 90-99 every time if it kills me. Thanks for the tips.
I've gotta say, i was around 105 every round then i started only hitting 3 wood 6i 7i 52° 60° and i hit 95 consistently
I found that too. If I play as if I'm shooting for 59, I get 110. If I play as if I'm shooting for 95, i get it or better!
Yeah exactly my experience as well... now all I need is to break below 90.... been soo close a few times but just can’t crack it haha
I started hitting my 3 wood off of the tee and I’ve scored so much better
Then revert back to part one. 😐
Excellent video series Matt! I've unknowingly put most of this into practice - I'm currently an 8,4 hcp, but only brought in a wood to my bag 2 years ago, when I was shooting in the 90's often. Before that I only played irons - and people kept jabbing at me, for not having hybrids, woods and a driver - I currently play without a driver, as I slice it further than I hit it forward (!) - and ignore peoples comments about the lack of driver, when I sit in the clubhouse having broken 80, and taken their beer money :D
These tips will help any new and experienced golfer - we just need to let go of our ego, or the ego imposed on us by fellow golfers "when we are not meeting the golfing standard".
I've only been playing for 3 months. I only used 6-9 iron. PW/SW/Putter for first month. Got me to break the 100 barrier in 1 month. Tortoise and the Hare mentality. It works!
Been binge watching your videos for the past week. It has been a mind opener. I'm excited to apply these on my game. Thank you! Keep it up Matt.
Glad you like them!
Just because the limit is 14 clubs, doesn't mean you have to carry 14 clubs. I see this mentality a lot in the backpacking/camping community - people get these huge bags with dozens of pockets and instead of carrying just what they need for the trip, they force way more weight and bulk onto themselves by feeling like they "have to" fill up every single pocket with stuff just because it's an option. I just started playing golf about a month ago, have played an 18 hole game and just recently a 9 hole game and I am going to play again this weekend. I can't tell you how much your videos have helped me improve my game and brought back the enjoyment of it that I never had when I played as a kid nearly two decades ago.
Back when I started playing regularly, about 30+ years ago, I was struggling with putting. Somewhere I read that I needed to focus on practicing nothing but 3 foot putts. So one day I went to the practice green, pulled out 4 balls and my putter, and practiced 3 foot putts for 2 hours straight. I would place the 4 balls around a hole, 3 ft away, and putt them in. I didn't stop until I got 10 in a row without missing. It was one of the smartest decisions I've ever made. Even after laying off golf for 10 years, I can still drop 3 foot putts with a high ratio of success. It not only made me good at 3 footers, I got pretty good at 4-5 footers as well.
Brilliant series Matt!👍🏽👍🏽
My handicap 20 + course par 70 = 90 - 36 putts = 54 full shots or chips. 6,200 yards divided by 54 = 115 yards needed for each shot. Wadda ya think?
Just used this system (and broke some rules since I’m hitting my driver more consistently) and broke 100 for the first time in 5ish years. Did it with a 90 on a par 72. Hit that range, find that 150 club and 170+ club and you’re set. Err on the side of caution and KISS.
I’ll confess I looked at my score on the last hole and botched my tee shot which cost me breaking 90, so da playa is right.
Love these VIDS. To the point and giving real advice.
This series is so great
I have learned so much from your channel! Such useful stuff especially the Michelle Low and Gen's videos! I used your system yesterday and got my first birdie ever (been playing for 2/3 years). Hit with a 5 iron off the tee (my partner even questioned me) and then a pw to the green 8 feet away. Birdie! Took my ego out of the game and had so much fun. Also kept a good attitude on the bad holes. It was a very short course but so much more fun! Thank you Golf Sidekick. PS How do you have time to play so many beautiful courses all over Asia?! What a life.....Wadda playah!
Thx Matt. Cut way back on the clubs in my bag from 14 to 6.
Now I am having more fun AND lowering my score.
Going with my 3w, 5w, 6i, 8i, PW n Putter
I live in Canada and we can only play six months of the year. With COVID delaying our reopening up here, I played my first game in eight months. I normally start with a score about 105 and get down to about 95 by end of the season. I have been watching your how to beat a 100 videos, put it into practice today and shot a 96. One of my better rounds in recent years, considering it has been eight months and on a course we have not played before. So a 10-12 shot improvement on my normal start of year.
One of my buddies ended up in the sand; and I mentioned your strategy of taking a few practice swings as there was no one about, so he did and got out cleanly.
Thanks again, after reviewing my round, I know some more putting and short game practice will get me down to 90.
Seriously great content!
Matt my scores are dropping! I’ve gone from a 114 down to a 105 already! I could potentially break 100 this summer!
Well said boss... 3wood, 6i, 8i and 54 are my go to clubs that never let me down... Everything else can cost me a golf ball...
I love the mindset approach that you have
Excellent lesson! The clubs that worked for me were 5H, 9i, AW, putter. Can hit them all pretty consistently, there are gaps in yardages for sure but I'm finding the fairway often and leaving myself with decent approach shots for 2 putts. Def works!
This is great advice.
I only carry 3,5,7 & 9irons, 50 & 55° wedges and a putter already... great series of videos and will need to implement more of the advice. Thanks Matt
I love this video... this is the spine, the neck, the whatevers, and the head. LOVE IT!!!!
First of all, kudos to your complimentary lectures on this fascinating game and, your enjoyable videos on the various South East Asia courses...As a member of a traveling club of mainly mid to high handicappers, this video is extremely interesting...We play some rather difficult courses and not one of our members has ever broached this concept of changing the par based on the handicap of the individual hole...Thank you for this very simple explanation of how this is accomplished...I am certain to introduce this change to our members when the season begins here in Northern New Jersey...Thanks again Matt for your dedication to this game of love and hate, LOL...Tony Shans
MATT! My favorite Playa! You've put together a really great piece here with the 150PSP* concept. I've actually been pushing this theory, now proven, for two years or more. I've done it on grass and I've even done it in video golf (WGT) to prove it really works. I would advise breaking out that one small section of video to stand alone. That is a fantastic six minutes that all aspiring golfers need to hear.
I've heard the Ben Hogan and Seve Ballesteros stories about how they both learned to play with only two or three clubs. That set me on this path. I'm currently reaching for the 200yd range and all of your 2I shots have inspired me. (I'm so impressed with how long and high you hit that 2I) I can hardly manage 175yds w/mine. So I picked up a 2HY and I've been hitting 190-197 off tee and fairway consistently.
This video has inspired me to follow through on this ambition. I picked up a silo club carrier, holds up to six sticks. I can walk out my front door, sling my clubs over my shoulder like a golf hobo, and walk as many holes as I can manage. Good fun, Good health, Better Golf!
I live on the 14th green in South Carolina, about forty miles NW of Augusta National, along the Savannah River. We have three top-rated courses all only five minutes apart. I'm blessed. Hit me up any time.
Looking to get tot he US this year hopefully works out for NY DC NJ VA SC NC - would be good to meet a playa
@@GolfSidekick I would recommend adding Joja to that list ;-)
I bought a cheap set and then my cousin have me 2 full sets of clubs when I started on April. Drove myself crazy (literally with 4 drivers to choose from) trying to figure out what worked for me.
6 months of practice has proven your theory. I've got about 5 approach clubs that are truly useful for scoring. However, I'm always experimenting with another club and it's keeping my scores high. Most of the clubs have 40-50 yards variability, per swing. The 5 clubs that are consistent are the distances you've outlined.
Great video!
Yeah this is awesome advice, i only mainly use 3i, 5i, 7i, pw and putter I’m comfortable with my other irons but I don’t have a driver, and I’m starting to find much more consistency in my game this way, i see people with drivers smashing it 250 yards in weird directions, my 3i or 5i off the tee doesnt go nearly as far but i hit them mostly straight and rarely get into trouble... i’m happy with that. Take the ego out and just play you’ll enjoy it more. I might get into a sand trap once every 3-4 rounds.. i just dont get into them so i don’t have a sw that might be my next club so i can hit closer shots higher
tried this today and shot my lowest score yet went wit 6i pw sw putter next time out im going to go with my 4i hybrid and see how it works with that as i know it goes 180 but unsure on the consistency this really helped my game today i shot 15 shots less than my average today just need a little putter work and its gold didnt know until i got home and counted the score up plus it was a wet round which im saying probably took 5 shots off me i can see myself improving massively because of this
There was a book published about 25 or so years ago called Radical Golf. This system is basically that book without the putter being replaced by a 2 iron. Sound thinking though. Play golf with control and establish a realistic personal par and learn to play the short game well.
Wow love these videos, just stumbled across them. 2 in now, sooo much sense has been spoken already. I’m a 2 year golfer and hovering around the 100 mark, sometimes break it but still not often.
I’ve only really started to accept I’m not going to be hitting GIR’s often and started poodling down the fairways with my smooth 5W swing (my 150-160y very reliable)
Golf has gotten a lot more reliable but I’m still battling with the driver off the tee which isn’t very far and very slicey. Might leave it in the bag for the next few rounds and just take 5W off the tee and see how I end up score wise
Playa, this video is gold. My man.
I love this, you are like the l.Ron.hubbard of golf cults. I’m completely convinced and a 100% bought in.
Awesome Matt, loving your natural no Bulls@&t approach. Too many emotions on display on the golf course, become a Playa!!
This is what I used to get my scores down, and very quickly. It then instilled confidence that spread to the rest of the clubs in my bag where I'm comfortable with almost every club now and have that course management knowledge. Fantastic tip this
I did this a couple of months ago and it has worked to significantly improved my game. Bag is 7i PW SW Putter and 3w. I can hit the 7i 145 reliably so I added a 6i which gives me 155. 145 handles all of white tee par 3s on my home course. The 6i is too long so I carry both. My whole approach to the game changed and I’ve started getting much better with these clubs. Not hitting driver on every non- Par3 was a massive improvement. I love my 3wood. I added the driver back because I can do better on 3 of the 4 par 5 and 2 par 4s. But just learning that changes my whole outlook. I’d really like to get an 8i or 9i back in the bag but I’m resisting. I can get a wide range of distances with my PW and that is teaching a lot about both course and swing Mgmt. So I’m sticking with my 7 club bag for the foreseeable future. I may swap out that 6i for a 5 or 4 or a hybrid at some point. I love my 3 wood.
3 wood was a game changer for me
Just started golfing and working to break 100. The mindset coaching you do is very much appreciated
Thank you - go forth and smash
Dead On!! I got rid of all my golf stuff because I was trying to do something and didnt have a plan. This plan makes so much sense. it makes me feel like "I can do that"!! Thanks so much. Just ordered a putter and balls. New goals, new game!
you can playa
excellent stuff, boyfriend.
For me it was changing to a 3 Wood of the tee, using similar set up/stance to my 4i. Dead straight every time with approximately 3/4 the distance of my driver.
Living this
...loving
You are my new guru
I shot a 46 over 9 holes using this so I’m really liking it
Remove the ego, totally agreed. Love it
Great Video series Matt! I deeply respect your content. Waddabaus! I also respect you so much for being willing to go back to basics and get lessons after a high level of success for many years. That takes great humility bro! I saw your page on your website for recommend wedges for handicap players and bought the Cleveland “s” sand wedge and “c”’chipper you recommended. What are your thoughts on substituting the chipper for the PW for this limited club system?
Great video, my wife is going to try golf next year. Do you think that the 150y distance is applicable for women to or should they focus on a shorter distance since its shorter tees?
Matt, your advice is sound. I am able to use a driver off of the tee, and it is my 175+ yards club in my bag. From there I usually use a 6 or 7 iron in the fairway. I shoot between 90-100 and play on 6000 yard courses.
Not only are you are baus golfer, but a baus artist as well? Not fair, man.
This is awesome advice I can’t wait to try. I’ve been getting really into the game lately after being a once a year golfer for about a decade now. Currently shooting in the 130s due to numerous drops and tops because I’m struggling to hit reliably. I feel much less overwhelmed after this video knowing I only need to practice 4 clubs at the range instead of my whole bag.
Once I get confident and reliable with those 4, I assume that’s when I should really examine the biggest distance gaps and start filling in?
BRO KEEP GOING! Love it! Just use this guide and plug the gaps you need. Avoid the difficult to hit clubs for a while. Get that PW out and putter and get that short game sensual. You gonna be BAUS. You will plug gaps when you need them, but do not do it by impulse. play 10 times like this, and ponder each addition carefully. you will know when you know. When you are o this train, you switch the brain over to self knowledge mode. You leave the matrix.
I think you are on to something. I will try this my next time out
I'm having another crack at this tomorrow. Game has became a bit worse recently. Trying to work a slice out with some lessons, but proving difficult. Went from hitting 102-110 to about 118-120 last couple rounds... But I'll keeping playing. This is the third time I've watched this video. I need you to come to Ireland playa and be my on course advisor like you're doing with B dog lol another great series currently.
Can we add MD wedge?
I miss that club
I'm sure he'll make you the exception😉
11:55 it's crazy that the golf brain looks like a golf ball
Maestro
Hey Sidekick, I’ve been playing golf for 10 months. Last Friday I hit 106, my best score ever and I did it because I used my 150 yard 8-iron on most of the par 4s & par 5s even though everyone else was using 5 irons, hybrids, woods etc. But I kinda had a meltdown on the 16th hole, a very long par 5 , where I thought I had to use a 6 iron because the pin was still like 550 yards away and I scored a quadruple bogey. It carried over to the 17th and 18th where I scored triples. Despite the meltdown, I beat my previous personal best of 112. Next time I’m gonna 8 iron my way through all the holes and resist the long hole pressure.. Thank you!
legend of the game in proess!!!
@@GolfSidekick process ? Yeah... I believe in the process and will just focus on it.
Did you know that.... 100% of the 18 holes are just Par-Threes, and half of them are short Par-Threes?....We only need a playable, not long, drive on par 4's or two decent shots of any length on par 5's, and then it's pitch and putt territory. QUESTION- Could that concept help mid-handicappers? It is, in fact, what the Matt'nator does if you think about it.
Big takeaway to all listening, watching, and playing golf--be honest with yourself--remove EGO!!!! Embrace WOTP!!!!
Bring back the Red Tuba print brother!!😎
这个就是我目前的状态
I only play with a driver , 7 iron, PW, SW, and putter. Mostly out of necessity because I am totally crap at any iron above 7. Somewhat unexpectedly, my driver is shockingly decent.
Oh I’m just to read this; I’ve recently started golf and I am going to choose the 7i tomorrow too!
Very well done
Matt, have you considered a career as a motivational speaker?
No golf course has the right to prevent someone playing from a shorter tee box. From a longer tee box, perhaps. Btw, brilliant backbone drawing. Golf Sidekick, M.D. is more like it.
Most people need to watch this. High egos dudes
Hmm.. this made we realize I don’t have a very reliable 150 club lol. It would be my 5 iron, but I am shank city with that club. I am only “consistent” with 7i + at this time. I’ve thought about doing a round with only 7i + but 7i goes 130-140
That should still work on 6000 yard courses
Thank you for this video. What would be the equivalent to the 150y club rule for women?
SW PW 100 yard club. 135 yard club. Optional 150+ yard club.
@@GolfSidekick Thank you. That's very helpful. Kind regards from germany
Should I use my 58 or 54 degree wedge as my SW? Thanks for the tough love.
whichever you play better with.
Me at home on Thursday: Yeah, this is gold. I'm going to get realistic about which shots I can actually hit, reduce the number of clubs, leave my ego at the door.
Me on the golf course on Sunday: I just made double bogey on 15 and now I need to make par the rest of the way to break 100. Next whole is a 375 yard par 4 - better smash the driver and try to drive the green in one.
These videos seem super helpful. Would be awesome to know if it applies to lady golfers too.
Of course, same thing applies just change it to 135 PSP but if you can do 150 PSP then you are doing well
@@GolfSidekick thanks for the immediate reply - very helpful! Love all your BDog series and videos with Genevieve. Would love to see you do a break 90 with a lady student too!
My putter carries about 10 yards, its pretty wild.
tee it higher
for women what will be the distance?still 150 yard club?
I wonder if these distances (150Y, 175+Y) are also applicable for ladies, or should we take shorter distances into account?
Yeah I was wondering the same thing for my lady. Given the shorter distance of the holes, I'm guessing you could use this same logic, but only take it to 125 yards instead of 150
Hi Matt,
Can we have a game ?
Friend of Malaysia
Tried yer idea last round but let ego get in the way and can't do that so ego getting left in the hoose wi ma driver next time.
So should we hiiiiigh handicappers step back and just head out with these in our bag?
Yep you need 4-5 clubs and a putter
I take my 5 wood to go 150.
I need some advice to break 90 consistently, pls
watch the breaking 90 video then
@@GolfSidekick yes,I already watched few hours ago,it really helpful, I will try and THINK during golf game👍
Instructions unclear: ready to follow you into battle
Great videos.. I am South African living in the UK .. lol your stats are designed for boys and I’m a girl 😂
Just reduce them by the percentage difference in tee length
So i would suppose minus 10-15%
I could probably score better with a 5 iron, 7 iron, sand wedge, and putter than with a full set of clubs. It would be about 130, but still.
I've no idea how far I hit it
is 150 yds also for women?
Just use a dividing factor. So if the course is 6200 for men with 150. Let’s use the same denominator for women. Course length 5400 so then 130-135 yards for ladies. But ladies need SW PW ,100 yard club, 135, 150 optional
@@GolfSidekick got it, thank you I AM going to try this technique next week!
Right now I can only hit my 5 wood about 150...should I shy away from using a fairway wood as my 150 club and try to learn to hit an iron or hybrid 150 for this system? In this system what would I use to hit a par 3 that is 130-140 yards. I can’t hit my pitching wedge that far yet and the 5 wood might go to far? Or am I missing one of the concepts?
What length tee are you playing?
If you can hit a 5 wood reliably, then look for a 7 wood to add to the bag. You need to go out and play then plug the holes you find. It’s up to you. But you need to go play and discover
So like...what happens when my 3-wood , 5 iron , and 9 iron all go the same distance?? xD
See the pro
Question: my local course has lots of quite short tees. I think the shortest are around 5300 up to 6200. What’s the shortest distance I can break 100 from and be happy I have legitimately broken 100?
If you have played 18 holes and there is a number that is less than 100 on your card then you have legitimately broken 100, it doesn't matter which tees you did it from.
This feels like going into the woods hunting bear with a slingshot. But I get it, and I’ll try it.
