I think the importance of this scene is that it's Kallen trying to figure out Lelouch. Lelouch doesn't respond to this because he's playing the role of Lelouch the emperor who needs to be evil.
What's funny is that he's breaking character here. He taunts Nunally to sell that he really is the evil emperor, but he doesn't do any such thing here.

@@J10969or he wasnt able to do that, he did that in turn 19 but he let his live on slipt away, which might have caused her death giving she was turning back. Thats the whole kallen and nunnally reversal that’s important there, lelouch spent the serie lying to kallen but wasnt able to keep doing so in the end and spent the anime promising not to lie tu nunnally before doing so in the end.

But I can't deny that Kallen's feelings for Lelouch were genuine. You can feel the pain in her voice when she speaks to Lulu about how he told her she must live back on the _Ikaruga._

Could you imagine what tales she'll be able to tell her kids after she married? Studied, loved and fought alongside a national liberator, kissed an Emperor, and partook in the redesign of the whole world? All of that, before 20 years old.
After that Lelouch says goodbye to Kallen, and Kallen does it too, but only one of them knows whose last goodbye it was , (I haven't seen the resurrection movie yet btw)

in the tv series i always felt he cared for C2 and Sherly, but Loved Kallen. There were several times where it felt like they were gonna finally hook up, but then everything went to shit around them. He realized he couldnt be with her and did not want her to follow him on his path.
In the movies they clearly went with an alternate route and had him and C2 fall for each other which isnt a bad pairing either.
Mine was different, though. I felt that he cared for Kallen because she started becoming his friend. Lelouch cared for everyone he considered as friends. She was an important ally who was the strongest pilot to a knightmare. If anything, I could feel that he cared for Shirley more than Kallen. If Lelouch was never a prince who was seeking revenge, then Shirley would have been his most probable partner.
Me, I'm personally shipping Lelouch and C.C. together, though. I love how their relationship built. From using each other to achieve one's own goal to deeply caring for each other. If anything, I felt that Lelouch had feelings for C.C, but it was way too busy for him to even realize his feelings. He did not even hold C.C. accountable with lying and hiding to him an important secret that his mother is alive and that they are working together with his father. Something that is the very drive and the very root of Lelouch's revenge(His mother died, and his father abandoned them, making Nunnaly a PWD) . Lelouch is no saint. He even hated how Suzaku was going against him, calling him a hypocrite and such. The only time I see Lelouch out of character is with Nunnaly and C.C. By out of character, I meant that despite them betraying him, he never, even for a bit, developed an inkling feeling of hate. And we all know that Lelouch is both hateful and vengeful. It pretty much felt that throughout the series, their feelings for each other were budding and growing into something more, but neither of them bothered to address it.

I remember 2008 the news about that Plot twist and the Manga Author said there is no way!!! Because they weren't even going to finish season 1 but then the RATINGS were HIGH AS FUCK so everyone got their triple SALARY CHARGERS PAID and made all brand new stories for this Anime Show!

Also kallen was a major love interest in the show especially in r2 it wasnt cut out ? I think you are maybe confusing with the alternate timeline but in canon she got more romantic devellopment with him that all of the other girls (she is also the only girl he ever flirted with or tried to bed )
Glad that didn't really happen. Lelouch has all the power in this relationship, it wouldn't be very healthy.

How many of you noticed the subtle foreshadowing for this scene.
I noticed that detail myself, although I also think it may be a reference to Turn 7, when Lelouch tried to kiss Kallen. Kallen shot him down then because he was “off” following Nunnally’s reappearance, so she felt actually kissing him later on would be what he wanted because he was off again, and when he didn’t react, she took that as a rejection.
I forgot about this little foreshadowing moment. Interesting
Wasn’t this when Lelouch knew that if he made any gesture or sign to Kallen then she’d follow him to like “hell and back” but he didn’t want her to be involved with the zero requiem.
@octoniko Yes, that's right. Kallen states in her Character Poem that if Lelouch said he loved her during this moment, even if it had been a lie, she would've stayed and followed him, even if it meant going through hell.
Lelouch was aware of this (which Kallen also states in her Character Poem), hence he didn't say or do anything. I believe that's also why he waited until she was out of earshot before muttering Goodbye. Because he knew that, had Kallen heard him, she (most likely) would've went back to him.

Idk if I'd call it foreshadowing since nowhere is it implied in Turn 6 that Lelouch would be Kallen's first kiss or that Kallen would kiss Lelouch at all. At that point in the anime, I'm not certain the writers of Code Geass even knew exactly how the ending was going to go. Not to mention sadly certain subplots had to be dropped (like Suzaku's weird moment on Kamine Island where he reacts to the underground gate) or altered due to the shift in scheduling for Code Geass between R1 and R2. But if the writers did intend to have Kallen kiss Lelouch at the end, then I'd say if anything Lelouch grabbing Kallen's face to keep her from turning around and seeing C.C. is more of a foreshadow, given the way in this scene Kallen grabs Lelouch's face. Sorry, I don't mean to be rude or criticize, but I felt it was worth pointing out. Also I've nothing against Lelouch x Kallen, if anything I kinda ship them. But then, tbh, I kinda ship Lelouch with everyone lol. I can't decide my favorite ship!
