Of course I would've preferred it if we had indeed won the double. But we do at least have the memory of the Merseyside cup win to fall back on - a somewhat beautiful epitaph and poetic commiseration for the Hillsborough tragedy. It would've been rather anti climatic had we won the double after a 1-0 defeat at home to the challengers, whereas, Brian Moore's " Thomas surging through the middle... Its up for grabs now!!', is what memories are made of

I was born Feb 88 my whole family from my relation to John Radford who played n scored over a 100 goals for the arsenal so my dad had me in baby arsenal gear dat year n said u where the lucky charm coz where Irish lol wat a season 💯🇮🇪
As an Everton fan I first saw John Radford playing in the FA Youth Cup final second leg at Goodison Park in May 1965 that ended in a 3-1 win for Everton and 4-2 on aggregate, John became a great centre forward and peaked in the Arsenal double side in 1971 And how they could hold on for a single goal win, whatever time they scored. John Hurst and Jimmy Husband also played in the final and won league honours with the Everton 1970 championship. The attendance for the final was 39,000 and played midweek I was in my last year in senior school. John Radford won a few England caps, having to compete with Geoff Hurst, Francis Lee, and Jeff Astle for and England place. Geoff Barnett who kept goal for Everton in the Youth Cup final. later joined the Gunners in the early 70s. One of the funniest sights I ever saw, was in a game at Everton v Arsenal in 1972. Everton had a diminutive left back named John McLaughlin who tried valiantly to get a tackle in on John Radford who had moved to the wing. He was about 6.1 and and McLaughlin about 5.2 it was bizarre to see. What price John Radford and Martin Chivers today. My own team have spent £500m on players since the new owner came in and cannot produce a winning team. Directors of Football seem to show good outcomes from player recruitment.
I was 4 when Arsenal won at Anfield so unfortunately I don't remember it at the time but when I was 7 my dad happened upon this video and got it for me. I must have watched it 100 times. They don't make them like they used to!
Ah the sweet memories..this is the first season of English football that i stumbled upon..my younger bro was watching a game on telly and i asked him what is the team he fancies..Arsenal is his response and Arsenal it was since then..when you look at the team with names of Adams..Bould..Dixon..Merson..Rocastle..Smith..Thomas..Winterburn..you knew everyone who puts on the jersey takes full pride and played for passion. And yeah you have Aldridge..Beardsley..Cottee..Pearce..Rush..Waddle and one of my fave Dean Saunders of Derby the list goes on for all the teams too.🤗

I was in my early teens as a Liverpool fan following every game, watching every match, hearing it on the BBC radio. Can never forget that season for many reasons: Hillsboro, Liverpool's super run in the 2nd half of the season, the FA Cup win and the last minute defeat to Arsenal.
Can't agree more. It was a working man's game. Stood on the terraces at Chelsea at the proper time of 3 o'clock. Nowadays football is too glitzy for my liking. I can't stand all seater stadiums, sky tv and all the overpaid foreigners who don't know anything about proper football rivalries, all they care about is making loads of money. I don't go to Chelsea anymore I now support my local team Gillingham and travel all over the country to watch them, it's more old school. Without sounding miserable , which I'm not, football was much better in the late 70's early 80's. It was a great time for me what with the good music and football. I'm 50 now and can still remember watching Chelsea in the old 2nd division at places like Cambridge, Carlisle, Oxford, Barnsley etc. Travelling on the old football specials which were in a right state but we didn't care. I got to the ground had a full english breakfast a "few" pints in the Swan or King's head then in the ground at 2.55. Perfect day out. Then back home and a few more pints and try and watch Match Of The Day or The Big Match. It was only about £3 to get in and a season ticket was £60, now it costs nearly that for 1 game !! It's time they brought back terracing and 3pm kick-offs and limit the ammount of foreign players to get football back to how it was in the good old days !!

Always heard him commentating on United games, Liverpool games etc. Then he started working for the forerunner to sky sports called the sports channel which was on British satellite broadcasting. Before they merged with sky television. One of their early games was the Everton v Liverpool 4-4 cup game in the 90/91 season. One of the first Tyler and Andy gray commentary games.

Yeah. I feel ya. But tbh, I'm still impressed that we kept pace with City for so long. Big achievement for this team, I feel. But we are going to have to add quality in multiple positions this Summer if we want to challenge again, and to even just compete in the CL. I'd be looking at 2 new midfielders. 1 of whom needs to be Caicedo or Rice. Then a striker, a rw backup/rotation for Saka, a left back if Tierney leaves, and probably another CB, because we have dropped off a fair way since Saliba got injured. What in god's name was wrong with Liverpool in the first half of this season? The year before they played probably the best football ever seen in England up to that point & blew everyone off the park all year long & then started this season as though they were asleep, maybe it was just complacency or a sense that they could click into gear at anytime & go on a big winning run to overtake everyone (which is what they nearly done & should have done except for that final game shitshow against Arsenal where they played like crap & deserverdley got beat.) As a Liverpool fan that season will always remain a mystery to me & of course the horrible scenes at Hillsborough were beyond belief & changed the club forever.
Liverpool were too inconsistent that season as were Arsenal to a degree. I think the fact that it was won on the last day like that sort of summed up the whole of that season. I actually put a bet on that game for Smith to score first and Arsenal to win 2-0 I only put on a pound but I think I won about 50 quid. My brother had done a bet where you had to predict the winners of each league , divisions 1-4 he got 2,3, and 4 right but had Liverpool to win the 1st division, that Michael Thomas goal cost him over 300 quid. I think I'm right in saying that Arsenal had to win by 2 clear goals to win the league that year so for the neutral it was an exciting end to a strange season, especially with Norwich and Millwall up there for a while. I know you think Arsenal pipped you for the title and you were obviously gutted but don't forget the Liverpool teams of the late 70's early 80's were the best in english football history what with European Cups, League wins, Fa Cup wins and League Cup. People say that the Man U team under Fergie was better than those Liverpool teams, I strongly disagree with that Liverpool were invincible then and now this season have a very good chance of winning the title. All this from a Chelsea fan !!

I remember watching the Liverpool v Arsenal game in the living room with my Dad and I remember saying to him after Smith scored the first goal for Arsenal that Arsenal will win this game and win the title. I don’t know why I thought that, I just had a feeling that they would. Even though I don’t support either team it’s one of the most exciting finishes to a league season I’ve ever experienced.

You were top of the league the following season as well, 1989/90. In September. Only winning 2 league games after that though ensured relegation.
