Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten, the brothers Koemen... these were some of the superstars from Holland whose blazing talents made the European Championship of 1988 so memorable and one to log indelibly in the whole recent legend of outstanding international football.
Eight teams qualified for the tournament finals, including England who scored more goals than any other side, 19, to reach the final stages - and the Cinderella side from the Republic of Ireland, managed by Jack Charlton.
But most of all Euro '88 had a winning side who swept all before them in a colourful and passionate series of displays that will be viewed again and again by anyone fascinated and intrigued by the way the world's most popular game is so sumptuously developing as it enters its second organised century. It is a must for fans and serious students alike. - Sport
What a video. Beautiful narration, generally showed a time when the world was more normal more happy. Soccer players were elegant, not the tattooed,multimillionaire freak shows they later became. This was the tournament that made me a fan of Holland. Truly a deserved title for them. What i especially loved about this tournament also were the team jerseys., especially Netherlands and Ireland. Adidas did a great job with the kits. Today's are just plain garbage. Is it me or after the 80s everything went to hell? Who cares if we didn't have smartphones, facebook or instagram. We had passion and fervour something seriously lacking today.
I am fairly sure that the narrator is Craig Charles, best known for his role as Dave Lister in the sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, but also a radio DJ, TV presenter (mainly in the 90s) and poet.

The music and the footage when Italy play Spain is just so 1980s at its best. Stunning it seems like a golden age.

One of the most beautiful international soccer tournaments ever contested, along with the 1970 FIFA World Cup.
Most of the matches were played during day time in bright sunshine which is visually more pleasing than playing at night.

1974 was the best world cup just look at how the dutch team played and destroyed brazil the defending champions
the 80's were class for euro's and WC's.. 82 and 86 were wonderful, france and platini at euro 84 then this to top it off in 88.
Thank you for posting this! My first Euros still remember it as if it was yesterday. Coming back, or rather rushing back home from school to watch the games live. This is a what made me he fell in love with the most elegant striker I’ve ever seen, my first idole, Marco Van Basten and his partner in Crime m, Ruud Gullit, making me a defacto Milanista from that point on and for ever! 💖
Atmosphere, intensity, music, huge crowds, colors, that '80s vibe, this is such a gem. This was the last major tournament where stadiums had large standing areas. Since then they have been all-seater stadiums with only a few exceptions and even they were in the early 90s. Something has been lost in atmosphere then.

I watched this several times when i was a kid on video tape...i searched it in here and had a pleasure watching it again!
Holland was the BEST TEAM at that times there was no doubts about that old talented team in year 1988 ..
I remember feeling absolutely gutted the Soviets lost the final. An incredible team in 1986 who just couldn't quite do it again vs Netherlands in 1988. Missed a penalty they did too. There was only one legacy between the greats Lobanovski or Michels and it went to the latter.

They should of shown Ronnie Whelan goal vs USSR. That was a world class goal. In my opinion that was just as good as Van Basten volley in the final!

Still the volley of van Basten was somethimg amazing. Not only,while being(Double)Dutch,but the angle and the moment,on which van Basten,shot this volley,was closely to imposseble.
Also the fact, that the pass of Muhren,was fabalous,without this pass,this goal wouldn't exist.
Something,a lot of people overlook,that moment wouldn't be there without his action.

I was 8 at the time. What I remember most vividly (apart from the victory celebrations of course) is the almost paranoid emnity before the game against germany. It was everywhere.
This comes a close second to Hero for the best fooball vid, I got it on tape still well dones for posting it and thank you.

Agreed on all counts! Loved all these football films. Gole (WC82) was another great one. It's a crime that none of these are available in digital form (physical or otherwise).
aces 1982 they are on DVD (not the one we're watching)...but unfortunately you have to get them in boxsets now I have the official FIFA World Cup Films DVD boxset (found it luckily on Amazon here in the UK for £49.99) (brand new) plus the UEFA archive which comes with everything just without the 50 Greatest Euro match of all time got that separate (altho you can them on iTunes)
now if UEFA did the same format as ECC/UCL/USC plus the UEFA Cup/Europa League with the Intertoto Cup in other disc as the UEFA Archive I would get it :D

Along with 1986's Hero from the World Cup in Mexico, this is a truly great documentary.
I find the music is quite poignant, saddening, representing a lost era of life back in 1988, when a lot of our loved one's were still alive and around, the soundtrack at the opening and closing credits is a tearjerker, a much more, uncomplicated, innocent world it was back then, and so was the game of football, no bullshit at all, no narcissistic egos, no tattoo infused overpaid show ponies.
It was more about heart than about pocket back then.
You could say that the game of football was more working class back then, more socialist, the way it should still be, the best way. Way more honest, it was too.
TOR was a brilliant documentary. This, was the last of the great European Football Championships. It was the last classic tournament. The best 8 teams in Europe.
Tournaments today are all about quantity rather than quality, all for money's sake. It's pure shit and greed. The World Cup, the European Championships, and especially the Champions League.

I'm afraid we'll not live to see the Netherlands win the World Cup. This Euro 1988 win was also the only win we've got. The quality of a few players, like those of Robben, is still high, but unfortunately that has become a rarity. I think that at the time the Netherlands wins the World Cup, the legends of the past won't only be gone, but completely forgotten as well. Just that long it's going to take for our success. Right now, we don't stand a chance in hell.

The Dutch were very good (Dutch myself) but the Soviet team was class as well.
This Dutch team could've become world champions two years later, if only the Dutch FA wasn't stupid enough to appoint the wrong manager (Leo Beenhakker). The players took a vote, and the very large majority voted for Cruyff to become manager of the Dutch national team. Yet the Dutch FA never bothered to approach him, and instead appointed Leo Beenhakker much to everyone's dissapointment. The whole tournament was a big flop, dominated by infighting and lack of authority, made possible by the Dutch FA.

So true. Michels did a great job in 1988. But although he knew that the most important players picked Cruijff over Beenhakker, he still went voor Beenhakker. I still don't get it? Players never go for 2nd best. It goes into there heads. Pity that Rinus Michels went for his own favor. What if? We will never know. In 1992 Holland should have won the EC instead of being beaten by ###### penalties. They beat Germany with 3-1 only while it should have been more. No always the greatest team wins. Period.
Don´t forget, that Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten were injured for a long time before the World Cup 90

Why Michels just didn't stay as national team manager for World Cup 1990 ? He came back for Euro 1992 and they defeated Germany again 3-1.

Dj Billy Bop Dj Billy Bop Are you mad , lol ? This was a incredibly strong USSR team , so much so it was labelled their golden generation. In fact they were actually favourites to win the 86 World Cup but they lost concentration and didn’t treat Belgium with respect which came back to bite them .
