    This is the most beautiful final tournament I saw and I have been watching final tournaments since 1990. Russia(Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko what players!), Croatia (introduced us Modric and Rakitic), Netherlands (would play the next world cup final with Sneijder, Roben, van Persie, Kuyt, van der Vaart and van Nistelrooy), Check Republic (Nedved retired, but they still had Koller, Baros or Plasil) and Turkey (yes, Turkey were the champions of the hearts with Nihat, Arda, Tuncay, Emre or Kazim) played great football. Italy - the world champion - was still great, Germany was Germany and Spain 2008 (with Xavi, Iniesta, David Villa, Torres, David Silva, Marcos Sena, Puyol and the others) is the most beautiful champion I saw, more beautiful even than Spain 2010 or Spain 2012. @Shotaro de Niet Nothing to do with Doping lol. That Russia side was literally the Zenit St Petersburg side that won the Europa League in 2008 (Smashing Bayern 4-0, Bayer leverkusen away 4-1, Marseille, knocking out Villareal etc). The rest of the Russia squad were players from CSKA Moscow's Europa League (Uefa cup) in 2005. They had great cohesion, beat England in qualifying. Sure maybe not a massive achievement, but those two sides were strong in Europe and trained every day with their clubs.
      I remember thinking the Dutch would win convincingly, at the time I had tipped 4-2 to the dutch because I knew the Russians would score but i did not see the Dutch being so dominated. The Dutch were lucky it went to Extra Time.. even there they were outplayed.

      Croatia was better whole game but referee as usual. Croatia scored goal in 119th min. There was a foul on turkey side in 121th min. Croatian coach asked for substitute for time to finish but 4th referee told him "Its over, no substitute". Main referee let another 10 seconds to pass and Turkey scored goal. Had there been substitute, Turkey would never pass Croatia. Even commentator here says, "Croatia still wants to make substitution, referee wont allow it" Clearly robbed by incompetent 4th referee. Wouldn't be the first or last time. Croatia had been robbed so many times in big tournaments - vs Germany Euro 96, vs Turkey Euro 2008, vs Brazil World Cup 2014, vs France in finals, etc, etc

      @TristanWeijermars Před 4 lety +1

      I didn't see any of the matches France and Italy played except for those against the Netherlands. However, seeing that they both drew against Romania makes me think they were past their top of two years earlier. At the same time the Netherlands were not at their top, but coming back after a period with bad to average results (not qualified for WC 2002, semi-final in EC 2004 but not convincingly, round of 16 in WC 2006 (the notorious match against Portugal)). In fact the trend continued: in the 2010 world cup both France and Italy were disastrous (both ended last in their groups), while the Netherlands played the final. What I am trying to say is that in spite of convincingly beating France and Italy the Dutch were maybe not as good as we thought in that tournament, since France and Italy were in decline. That makes it altogether easier to understand how the Netherlands lost against a good team with an inspiring coach who was happy to accept the underdog position.

    Not sure if this is true or not but here's a story I remember hearing at the time. After Turkey's defeat against Portugal in the first game, Turkey's coach called the players' mothers and apparently, the mothers yelled at them because of their poor performance. From that moment onward Turkey was phenomenal.
    Also, if I'm not mistaken, Turkey's game against Germany was even brighter in retrospective because Turkey was missing several players due to injury and cards.
