  • After Haiti gained its independence from France back in 1804, the French never gave up on their plan to regain their colonies. This is why many years later, France sent an ordinance to Haiti, accompanied by a squadron of 14 brigs. This ordinance said: "The present inhabitants of the French part of St. Domingue shall pay... the sum of 150,000,000 francs (roughly the equivalent of US$21 billion today), destined to indemnify the former colonists.” France, of course, knew that the Haitians were not capable of paying this.

      Combine that with a 20 year US occupation, a hereditary dictatorship installed by the US, consistent natural disasters, widespread corruption, and the lack of ability to afford even basic education for it's people, and you see why Haiti is in the state it's in.
      Haiti is one of the few nations where the reason for it's poverty is not the fault of the people. The nation is poor because NO ONE wanted a nation of people they barely saw as people to succeed. Haiti was doomed the second everyone around it realized the country was majority black. The US refused to recognize it for 70 years, and it took the UK 40. The US also embargoed the nation during it's early years.
      You can't build an economy if half the world thinks you're to savage to trade with, and the other half sees you solely as something to rob.

    The debt was also a punishment for the genocide of white population in Haïti in 1804 with all women being raped and kill in front of their children and men (which were also killed) if they refused to marry their rapists. And the white population in 1804 was not former slave owner, these one fled or were expulsed years before, but just regular people.
    For the debt, the 150 millions of francs (latter reduced to 90m) were just one single year of revenue from Haiti before the revolution... the debt was fully paid in 1883.

    • @eljanrimsa5843
      @eljanrimsa5843 Před 2 lety +4

      That's wrong on many levels. E.g., the debt was fully paid in 1947. France was getting the last payment in 1883, but part of the debt was financed by an US American bank, and that gave USA the reason to change governments and occupy the country.
      Before the revolution, the revenue was created with an unsustainable slave labor system, where fresh slaves had to be brought from Africa all the time because they were dying from the conditions. After slavery was abolished there was no way to pay that amount, and France knew that. It was a scam.

    Some historical notes, the leader of the revolution had himself declared King and instituted an elected monarchy, non-blacks were banned from owning property. In 1805 they sent an army of 30,000 to capture Santiago, when the people ran away rather than surrender they burnt the city and ordered the total extermination of the native population as they 'didnt deserve to be free' the population was taken to Haiti and quartered or crushed by large animals. He was assasinated after two years and the country split in two under the two army commanders. The leader of the south was originally pro-democratic but when his term of office came to an end declared himself emperor for life, the leader of the north on the other hand instituted a constitutional monarchy with him as monarch and later declared himself archbishop, the two haitis would merge again but had a series of despotic and violent rulers. In 1915 the US invaded, took the countrys gold to New York and made it a colony which it remained until 1932.

    • @jeffGordon852
      @jeffGordon852 Před rokem

      That's not accurate at all!
      " the leader of the revolution had himself declared King", not King but Emperor. Non-white were able to own property if they naturalize, like the Poles. If you naturalize you are considered "Black" it's written in the constitution. French went to hide in Santo Dom in the hope of recapture Haiti, that's why Dessalines decided to launch an offensive. No native extermination ever happen, only the one who want to stop Dessalines and continue the slavery got attacked

    A very biaised (although funny) view of a complicated relationship. To motivate you to look it up outside of that neo-anticolonial lense, consider that the authorities of Haiti ordered the systematic murder of all white people on the island (with a few exceptions such as a small colony of germans and polish deserters), very few of whom had been slave owners. Neither women nor children were spared. It was carried out by hand with sharp objects. All of it was planned and backed by legislations and decrees. Only the relatively small number of victims (3-4k) and the general french disinterest in victimhood as an identity prevent it from being classified as a genocide, which, in a strict sense, was the case, as the Haitian authorities did not hide their belief that multi-ethnic nations are impossible to build and seeked to purify the land, forcing the reluctant (often, the mulattoes) to participate in this consecrating endeavor.
    Of course, of all the property on the island that was seized, the actual slaves were only a fraction.
    And of course, that event and the reparations are negligible compared to the endemic causes of the current state of anarchy in Haiti 200 years later.
    That being said, water under the bridge, no hard feelings, i hope the Haitian nation can undergo the reforms it needs to restore order, security and independance.

      Negligible ??? Haiti had to borrow the money from France at a high interest rate to pay the debt, and because no other country would trade with it because they were mostly profiting of slavery itself the country went bankrupt. So Negligible is not the word you are looking for

    • @paulf3999
      @paulf3999 Před 2 lety +2

The story of Haiti is the story of many caribbean nations, even smaller ones, and it underperformed them all. I'm sure the many earthquakes and hurricanes that happened since then have made considerably more damage. Compared to 200 years of progress and regressions that debt is negligible.
      Another bit of common sense : if you want to build a successfull nation, don't start off by killing all the white people. That sends the wrong signal. Look at the story of Zimbabwe.

Even right now its still the case, the government wasn't allowed to mine golf because the us dimmed them incompetent until VCF mining a company owned by Hillary's brother got the contract by granting board membership to the prime minister.
