In a world on the brink of nuclear annihilation, one man's courage becomes humanity's last hope. "That Time ONE Russian Soldier Saved the World" tells the harrowing tale of Vasili Arkhipov, a Soviet Naval commander whose decisive actions aboard a Russian submarine during the Cuban Missile Crisis averted global catastrophe. Amidst the panic of lost communication with Moscow and under the looming threat of war, Arkhipov stood firm against the unanimous decision of his fellow officers to launch a nuclear torpedo at US forces. His insistence on diplomacy over destruction preserved peace and prevented the mutual assured destruction that seemed inevitable. This gripping story underscores the importance of individual courage in the face of overwhelming pressure and the thin line between peace and global conflict. Join us as we dive deep into the tense moments underwater, where the fate of the world rested in the hands of an unlikely hero.
Interesting fact: Another interesting fact about Vasili Arkhipov, not covered in the script you sent, is his involvement in a severe incident aboard the Soviet submarine K-19 in 1961. This submarine, the first of its kind to be armed with nuclear weapons, faced a critical reactor coolant leak. The malfunction endangered not only the crew but also posed a risk of a nuclear meltdown. Arkhipov and the crew were exposed to high levels of radiation while improvising a secondary cooling system to prevent the meltdown. This exposure had long-term health effects, contributing to Arkhipov's death from kidney cancer in 1998. The K-19 earned the nickname "Hiroshima" due to the severe radiation exposure and its lasting impact on the crew.

Fun fact: vasili arkhipov was supposed to be off duty that day, but he decided to work.
If he wasn't there, another commander would take his place and probably also agreed to launch the torpedo.
Damn, this man was a gift from God.
I think you're mixing up 2 different stories of a man saving the world from WW3
Isn't that "Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov?"
He refused to fire a nuclear torpedo onto an American Carrier and prevented the third world war.
Correct.
Thats literally what the episode was about
Well guess what? The third world war has already started, and we didnt even know.
World war three actually happened before.since the seven year war is World War One,the war with the Austrian Hungarian arckdude being assasinated AND the war with that Austrian painter ruling nasi germany is WORLD WAR THREE!
The war of the assasination thing is World War Two.sorry I forgot to put that in.
This is a moment in history we need to make on every calendar in the world. This man didn't just avoid a new war. He saved lives that deserve to give him recognition.
possibly even the entire world
No it’s more like 2 people without much political authority tried to start a new war lol
It happened more than once, the commander of the Soviet base - Serpuchov 15, Stanislav Jevgrafovič Petrov also prevented a nuclear war and almost nobody knows about him.
Could you provide more Details, what you are saying sounds interesting
@@marcoherrmann1820 There was a false allarm of a few missiles going into soviet territory. He reasoned that if America were really attacking the URSS it would have sent MANY of bombs, not just a few. He thus didn't report the false allarm to his superiors and saved human Civilization

That person stopped the USSR from using torpedoes on the USA man respect bro!😢
it was not just a torpedo it was a nuclear torpedo, that could have started a new world war, both countries has its allies.
Bro, you do know Moscow has a secret protocol of overriding all three commanding officers, approval or not the decision wasn't theirs to make but the government officials in Moscow.
his name is Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov
@@stuartemmanuel3735 too bad, the sub was at maximum dept so communications to moscow was impossible.

He should be the man to recieve the highest decoration from multiple countries in my opinion for saving the world. But all he got was blame returning home.
Two Soviet men saved the world on two different occasions from their own comrades paranoia and technical glitches. Neither of these men received the credit they deserved, yet the entire world owes them our deepest thanks. Requiescat in pace Vasili Arkhipov and Stanislav Petrov.
Thanks for sharing their names, I will look them up

4:53 Why did they omit the fact that the Soviet Union placed the missiles in Cuba because the U.S. literally did the same thing in Turkey? (at that time, bordering the USSR).
How could you know that?
@@Almina-nh7nu It is a well-known truth, but American propaganda promoted this concept that only USSR put the missiles in Cuba just for the sake of it, since the other counterpart of the story remained classified for more than 40 years. But it is information that is everywhere, even on Wikipedia. The Missile Crisis is, in fact, the best historical period to explain the current problems of Russia and NATO and their confrontation in Ukraine
Thank the universe for people like Vasili Arkhipov.
I really wanna shake the hand of that Officer and congrat him for stopping ww3
The last 10 seconds made me cry, How much sense there is in his sad gaze at the sunset

In my opinion, it was a stupid idea on the part of the United States to drop deep-sea bombs on a submarine carrying nuclear weapons.
But question do Americans know that they are carrying nukes?

I didn’t know that this was a true story. Now this is why MrSpherical makes history fun! I wish I was back in my high school days and telling my teacher about your channel and watch your content. Fantastic job MrSpherical! You deserve it!
It is true he is the true great hero of the world Russians have saved is twice
Im gonna be hyped, i watched a short about this and IM SURE THIS IS GONNA BE WORTH OF WAITING RAHHH
Doing the right thing and following the rules are not always synonymous.
Let’s also not forget Stanislav Petrov, who correctly deduced the missile warnings from his base were false alarms. Also saving us from World War Three.
Wow, these videos just keep getting more and more amazing! Keep it up!
This is all very exciting of course. but what interests me is that no one in the video ever mentioned the fact that the supply of nuclear missiles to Cuba was a retaliatory reaction on the part of the USSR. This happened gradually due to the US stationing its missiles in Turkey. Why are the entire Soviet crew, except Arkhipov, portrayed as some kind of stupid idiots? All these people are heroes and no one will ever understand what it’s like to sit at the bottom of the sea and think that now your country is at war, your loved ones may be dying, and you can’t do anything. All crew members are heroes, I think so. And all these people were among the best. Why is the video not talking about a complete blockade of Cuba, because of which even merchant ships could not arrive there? Why are they not talking about American attempts to overthrow the government in Cuba? Perhaps this is the ultimate difficulty of translation. But I didn't hear any of that in this video. Only that the USSR is such a terrible dumbass and only one Arkhipov is great. Although it is far from only him who saved us all
"No" the most powerful word
Frr:D
Other history channels should talk about this character and how he really saved the world.
In Russia, probably every third Russian knows about this person.
Wow it’s crazy how close we were to world war 3
One of the most heroic people in modern, if not all, history
Thanks him a lot for saving the whole world 🙏🌎🕊️
I’ve actually heard of this before, it’s the man that saved everyone from WW3
I like everything about this video, where it has a relation to the Cold War, as well as the interesting design and machinery of the battleships. This one is slower compared to other Cold War videos in the MrSpherical series.
Dang, the animation alone is already getting me to put this in the Top 10 favorites.
This man single handedly saved the world
A true work of art, Keep it up!
I love this video dude keep it up! ❤
In Russia every nuclear launch is under the authority of the specific general unlike US where US president has sole authority over all of the nuclear weapons.
Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov is the GOAT for letting me live
I also remember this story of a soviet officer in a base who was the person to launch the ICBM's in retaliation. They suddenly had a signal of a US nuke being launched against them. The guys were mad nervous on what to do and some wanted the officer to shoot back and some weren't sure. He decided to remain at stand by and wait to see if it's a real missile or not. They tried to find out in any way possible but they couldn't figure it out and so when they waited until the missile hit its target they checked to see if they got nuked, but there was no such report and they discovered it was just a fake signal, caused maybe by a comet or something.
I am assuming you’re talking about the 1983 false alarm incident. At the time the Soviet officer Stanislav Petrov monitored the Russian satellite early warning system which detected a lone ICBM launch from the U.S.
Figuring it was a computer error (his thinking being that the U.S. would perform a first strike using hundreds of missiles and not a single missile) he didn’t send an alarm to his superiors. After confirming this since the “missile” never activated the land based radars throughout russia, he continued to ignore the further 4 missiles that were “detected” by the satellite systems.
Later on they discovered the satellites were actually being fooled by sunlight reflecting off of high altitude clouds making the illusion of ICBM launches, this was later corrected by using geostationary satellites alongside the current satellites
But isn't it crazy how one simple "NO!" saved millions of lives
Bilions
@@widodoakrom3938 not billions but a billion at max cuz ay no way it killed that many I'll even say millions
Some Russians may be bad but some are good

In terms of animation quality, yes. In terms of content, not at all. In the previous video clip about the Second World War, which was the main reason for the Soviet and German invasion of Poland, there was no mention of the Danzig Corridor, not a single mention of the Soviet-Polish war of 1920. Even in this video, there is not a single mention of the deployment of nuclear missiles in Turkey. From this we get a black-and-white morality. And then guess, either the author himself is just pretending to be a historian, but in fact does not understand anything, or the author is just a good propagandist.
@@-Moscow.Official. Yeah Mr spherical does make the events less of a grey area, and more of a black and white narrative.

There is a dark side to the story. When the Soviet Union found out about what he had done, he was accused of not following orders. The Soviet Union was fired from his job for the heroic work he did. We thank him for what he did, and at the same time the whole mistake began when John Kennedy was the President of America who wanted a world war and was assassinated by a French sniper
