  • The technical name for rat poison is "Rodenticide." Dogs and cats are certainly at risk for health issues if they ingest these, but we have a saying that goes "the dose makes the poison." That means that it takes certain amounts of different poisons based on your pet's body weight to be of true concern.
The hard part about rodenticides is that there are so many different kinds, that the amount each individual pet would need to ingest to cause concern is different in pretty much every case.
If you see your pet each rodenticides, bring them in so we can make them vomit. If you just find that one of the containers of the rodenticide has been eaten, I generally tell people to still bring their pet into a vet hospital, but to also call ASPCA or Pet Poison Helpline on the way in. They are the ones that are going to know how much of each specific rodenticide is concerning and to what level for your pet.

my dog ate some rat poison, we didn't know what kind because I never knew about it and my dad had completely forgotten about it, so we didn't have the packaging. Luckily though, since my dog has absolutely no shame and brought the box to me so we were able to rush him to the ER vet right away. I guess we were able to narrow down which poison it was because they prescribed some medicine and he was perfectly fine
