A smart breaker is very much a standard circuit breaker, that operates on electromagnetic and thermal protection. They trip like a standard breaker, the reset like a standard breaker, but they're a bit more complex than one.
A typical smart breaker has both line-voltage and low-voltage terminals that get wires landed on them. The line-voltage terminal is just like a regular breaker, accepting the load conductor that goes out to a circuit. The low-voltage terminal is a much lower voltage signal input that allows communication to happen from a low voltage controller. This controller will communicate with the breaker remotely and can command the breaker to turn on or turn off. There's also a manual override switch on them that will allow a user to "break" the communication circuit manually.
The reason smart breakers are used, for example in large grocery stores, is to be able to monitor specific equipment that food is stored in (refrigerated deli cases). If something happens to that piece of equipment, and it just shuts off, the workers may not know anything has happened and the food could spoil quickly. Extrapolate this to the entire store going down, you could imagine the catastrophe that could cause. So when there's a problem, the remote monitoring service that watches over the store can see it and address it immediately.
Another use for smart breakers is for lighting control. For the same reason as above, if several rows of lighting go down, monitoring will know about it immediately. So in a way, smart breakers are similar to shunt-trip breakers in that they can signal the breaker to turn on and off from a remote location or an event, rather than the breaker only being able to be manually turned on and off while standing in front of it.

I watched this video since I was looking at smart breakers, but for a slightly different purpose: Energy monitoring in a residential setting. As part of a smart home it would be nice to know how much energy is used by each circuit. I looked at the Leviton system, which looks like what I want, but there are other systems as well (one thing I liked about the Leviton panel is no pigtails with AFCI/GFCI breakers, but that is really minor, although it makes for a neat and easy installation). Other smart features such as notifications when a fault occurs and remote turn on/off is a plus, but less important for residential. All part of a smart home / building. Would love to see future video on that and hear your thoughts. Thank you for all of your videos, you are fantastic! Love your work!

It would be nice to get a room by room breakdown of consumption. I work from home, and it would be nice to know how much I spend on electricity in my home office for business purposes. Local control on a LAN would be nice, but if an internet conection isn't optional, I'm not interested.

@@willdwyer6782The breakdown would depend on your wiring since you can only measure entire circuits at the panel level. If you’re just interested in your home office you could use smart plugs or something like Shellys to monitor your consumption that way.

Entertainment venues have started using these type of systems to remotely turn on and off theatrical lighting and audio equipment via DMX lighting protocols. It’s less expensive than putting in a theatrical dimming system. Plus, a lot of live theatres are changing over to LED instruments and not using tungsten sources.

So if you manually flip the breaker off, the monitoring service can still turn it back on? I'd make darn sure the circuit I was working on was set manual so they couldn't. Their ability to monitor doesn't take priority over my desire not to be shocked or worse.

You can also shutoff breakers as people come and go. Eliminate phantom power use when no one is home. Motion can control circuit instead of switch
Safer and more environmental to turn off all circuits that are not critical when no one is there. IE bathroom circuits that have heaters. It prevents fires from left in heater (common) or just failures that cause shorts and possible fire.

This is very dangerous having someone other than yourself with the power to decide when and where you have power. Big brother is extremely deceiving right now. A shady electrical contractor just installed one of these on my mom’s house and now I have to check if these breakers are in manual or auto. I’m now looking at traditional panels and breakers to replace what they did. This guy butchered the walls and outlets throughout the house. The whole purpose was to get a reputable company to verify the safety and integrity of electrical system in this older house which only had a 100 amp main. With all these extra appliances and electronics now days, she was starting to have issues here and there throughout her house. She gave him a $2000 deposit and now wants an additional $2900 for work that is now more dangerous than before.

I'd like to see a video about the risks of locking in to one brand of internet-connected cloud-hosted startup company tech for something as basic as home utilities. My house has two Square D QO panels installed in the 1980s, I can still buy breakers for them today. For goodness' sake, you can still buy replacement breakers for Federal Pacific panels and they're... well you did a whole video on that. If I install a smart panel, and five years from now I need to add a circuit, am I going to need to re-do the panel all over again because I can't get an 'obsolete' 2022 model year breaker, or the company folds and I can't reconfigure the panel without their cloud server? Smart panels are a really interesting idea but I need to have confidence it's going to be done once and last 25+ years, and "smart" devices are not known for longevity. Am I mistaken? Do any of these smart panels at least use some sort of open standard that someone else might manufacture parts or independent controllers for?

If you are looking to justify the cost of smart devices I can believe it hard to justify the cost. So let me give you a few examples that give a friend of mine value.
A friend has a lake house used by family and friends.. yes she loves the thermostat, but there is a smart valve on the main water line, the outside porch lights can be turned on from the her parked car. She can water the grass remotely. The front door bell/camera is important and the last device are the door locks...
These devices give her peace of mine and that alone was enough. She had a flood once now the water sensor will shut off the house water... tripping on the front entry stairs is a real problem when they are not light... strangers at the door...
Think about these smart devices how they help day to day... and how they help when something goes wrong. Then you will see their real value.

Not worth it for residential to have smart breakers, though energy monitoring is handy. Smart lighting is useful too. I've been slowly introducing smart automation in my home and that's where I have found the most use along with door locks. One press of a button at my bed and all the lights in the house go off and the doors lock.

They could have had wireless/ethernet module in a small side box, then just run connector cables from each breaker to side box. Nope, rip it all out and replace it all.

I’m extremely curious how someone securely authenticates into that low voltage controller. If you say a PIN - prepare for me to scoff! :) Even if you say a 6-digit PIN - ‘hard pass.’ If you say SSL certificate - then you’ll get my attention.

I'm just a dude with a family. Not an electrician. Every day our kids leave on 20 to 40 lights when they leave for school. I have to go around turning them off. Why aren't there wifi circuit breakers where when I'm leaving the empty house I can just click a button and all unnecessary circuits turn off. When I return I turn them back on. Seems like a simple idea but probably isn't.

You could install smart lights and present sensors in each room. They are easy to program and connected to each other. When nobody in the room for x minutes, turn off the lights. When somebody enters the room and it’s dark, turn on the lights. If it’s still bright in the room, don’t turn on the lights.

I'm assuming that part of the reason that new homes are so expensive is because they now have some advanced technology in every aspect, including the electrical. Also, are you a master electrician?

This stuff you show is ancient. Leviton Load Center All Plug-On smart breakers connect wirelessly to a hub inside the panel board and WiFi/Ethernet connects to homeowners network to run My Leviton App to check each intelligent smart breaker or shut off remotely.

Jules Bartow wired connections are more reliable. I only use wireless devices if I can’t pull a wire between two points.

I will give everyone a little advice out there on smart breakers and a monitoring service. I work for a company where "someone" signed a lifetime agreement with a monitoring service. Lets just say the service is lousy at best. The only way different locations get removed from this service is when the company "sells" the location to a franchisee. And this agreement has been in force for more than 19 years.

A huge additional usage is to be able to conveniently shut off bedroom circuits at night to disable the 4 problematic types of EMF propagated by house wiring: 1) 60Hz Magnetic radiation, 60 Hz Electrical radiation, Radio Frequency radiation, and Dirty Electricity. That strategy can lead to a huge health benefit for many.

These are completely useless ! When the circuit braker activates or being activated your wifi is out as well . Now you are also out of luck since you cant turn it back on remotely without your home wifi signal .Rendering the device useless .... FAIL !
