  • Princess Diana will forever be an icon, but what we certainly can't forget is how she was treated by the royal family.
Disclaimer: Yes, this is a TV show. Yes, some or most of it is fiction. But Diana WAS treated horribly in buckingham palace. And her marriage with Charles was terrible.

Prince Charles treated Princess Diana horribly. Prince Philipp had a good relationship with Princess Diana tho. Everyone else didn't bother to get to know her. She knew what she was signing for when she married charles. Also she was already mentally ill and being part in a family like them (which is understandable, being warm and nurturing is not expected from the queen because she's THE QUEEN, they grew up in that kind of environment, she doesn't have time to be a mother) and having a cheating bastard for a husband made it worse.

@@noneexistent3219 I agree with most of this but I don’t believe Diana truly knew what she was signing up for. She was a teenager who was tricked into marriage by a man almost twice her age who didn’t love her. It’s true she found out about Camilla after accepting Charles’ proposal, but if she had broken it off before the wedding she would have become the most hated woman in Great Britain and the media would have abused her mercilessly for at least a decade, which, given her mental health struggles, she might not have survived. Diana was a survivor and going through with the wedding was a choice that was made for self-preservation instead of self-promotion.

Diana was from an Aristrocrat family. She may have been in experienced but not uninformed nor naive about what she was walking into. The show shows Diane being told or learning basic royal family information which let alone aristocracy, common people in UK knew off particularly in those times. Despite knowing her heritage, the narrative around her made us subconsciously cast her as a poor, lonely, nursery maid from nowhere knowing nothing - a perception fed most likely by the family and herself deliberately to play into a Cinderella troupe, but that's untrue. She was an Earls daughter brought up in privilege, luxury and highest social connections, including most powerfully her own immediate family who supported her throughout. Which in itself is not a cause of prejudice but it belies the narrative of her being ignorant to the customs, culture, nature of relationships and protocols. She was literally brought up in a family with worse emotional dynamics than the Queens household at the time. So having notions of true love and obsessive sentimentality were delusional when the norm around her was marrying for pragmatic reasons and having not just 1 or 2 but a number of relationships - just as normal as having a number friends. This is not to cast Diana negatively and other parties positively. It's just to say reality is complex and being led by one or the other side's propoganda is allowing ourselves as by-standers being used for their (either sides) purpose. And that perhaps we should be smarter.
