It was Diana's actions, LATER, that made the riff. It was well known, when they were first married, Phillip had many "dalliances" and it hurt her because she loved him with all of her heart. She kept it quiet. It's called "decorum" something sadly lacking in the modern age!

I also loved the scene in 'Chirp' where Manny is upset with Jay because one of Jay's workers crashed the forklift with Manny in it and got fired, and Jay said "You can give me the cold shoulder for the rest of your life, but Jack's not coming back. I can overlook the goofing off, but you could have been seriously hurt today. Anybody who puts my kid in danger doesn't get a second chance. EVER." and Manny said "Did you really call me your kid? You've never said that before." and Jay replied "Well of course you're my kid, I mean, what do you think?!"

Jay: "I realized being with my kids was more important than leaving my wife. That's not the right decision for everyone, but it was the right decision for me. So I stuck it out until they were grown." Gloria: "Jay, do you want to join me in the jacuzzi?" Jay (with huge grin): "And the universe rewarded me!" 😆🤣

Jay was homophobic at first but his character development was so good comparing from season 1 to the end of Season 5 at Cam and Mitch's Wedding.

in terms of Boomers, Jay is actually a good dad. Back then he went from dirty poor to a wealthy man all by himself. When you had to live paycheck by paycheck, it's hard for you to look into things and have sympathy or something. He seems conservative but at some point he ends up compromising and making it up to the family. His character development from season 1 to 11 is really something worth binge-watching
