I really don't know why you are not more recognized in the online community. You are literally THE source to watch when it comes to staining a guitar top.
This blew my mind, I did NOT think that top was going to turn out to be one of the nicest I've ever seen. The contrast you got on that is on its own orbit, wow!
As soon as you sanded back the brown and cleaned it off...man, I'd be happy with that! But then the yellow really brings it home...Great work, man. Learning a lot from watching these!
Oh my... Dude, that was f*ckin amazing. Thanks for this vid. I’m s hobbyist, and you really piqued my interest in trying this type of work. Absolutely beautiful! It came to life right before my eyes..
Those Japanese Fenders are so clean looking and for a Telecaster that guitar is a rock machine. Got to compliment you on your playing, can't beat playing a little old school Aerosmith, nice job.
Man! I do hardwood flooring (creating the samples) and I love this work you do. Similar to what I'm doing. You have a lot of talent & I hope you know you're gifted!
@@bigdguitars Love this video as well as all your other ones. I have a well figured maple cap Tele body that I want to do a similar finish on. Have a couple questions about the sanding process . Are you using a variable speed sander and if so how fast do you set it at? And also how much pressure are you applying? Thanks
Finish turned out beautiful. I wish I had this tutorial 20 years ago when I used to build parts guitars. Would have saved much frustration and re-work. 👍
Is it me? Do you ever think once, you've gone to far? I'm doing a burst and I'm thinking I went to far, that's why I bought a laminated ES 175 China body (my first) and I think if it doesn't work? So far it looks angry. An Angrybirst like I waited 50 yrs of playng and I'm making my first hollowbody and I'm making my first hollowbody electric an Angryburst. My electronic's same and different. I was raised in a TV repair shop that my father owned an operated over my first 20 years and 50 yrs of playing and learning, but I never thought of building some guitars until my first hardbody was dying. I was built by al professional nass maker. So then I made one. And like it. And now I'm making another but liter and my love with wood is weird, but the look of grade 5A flame to scallop is mesmerizing! Today I split a cord of an Olive Tree and the Nation's Revere honor natural wood of Israel. It's taking me 5 year to break this piece of a log and I still need to split a 2nd board really another log like the 1st!
That is fucking gorgeous! I thought it was waaaaaay to dark w/ 1st coat and figured you were going to sand it- inspiring- just getting into dying -and trying to do enough research to do it right - thx fer sharin! I didn’t get this good instruction at Luthier school!!!! Serious
ausum i cam home from home depot with a locktite produt GO2 turned out its polly glad i rubbed it in to some scrap maple it wasnt fast and it was thick but it buffed out sweet for 4 bucks for 1.75 oz.
I have an important question on the finish on a neck . I'm doing a pearl color burst with a 4k finish coat I have the Matt black done but the Fingerboard I did my own mother of pearl cutouts for the neck did the inlay cuts on finger boards all my alien inlays glued in no excess glue. Now I wanted to do a gloss finish more for show as it won't go on tour with me not yet anyway I tried gloss poly urethane terrible on rosewood took it all off. Would True oil work as it's hard finish and can fill the poures in the wood after 3-4 coats it should be nice do you think that a good way or recommend something else. I'm in a holding pattern on my build.
How do you finish the back, also with tru-oil? I'm also looking at options for finishing a flame maple over alder body and have heard that Alder doesn't take stain. I'm looking to do a darker blue back but am fine with seeing the brown through it.
At the last dye application (time = 10 minutes 30 seconds), did you sand again, before you applied the Oil ? It looks like you did, but you did not say so, and then the next frame picture was you applying oil. Great Video! I am using your technique for a Curley Maple bar top
Do you happen to remember the amount of dye you added to the water to achieve these hues? I'm just about ready to starting dying my body and any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Don't mind me, I'll just be watching this on repeat.
don't be stealin any of my vid ideas hahahaha.
Well there go all of my content plans for the next six months... haha

I don't know if I'd install hardware and play it, or hang it on the wall as is.
That's a work of art.
Mother nature and BIGD both get half the credit.
This guy is awesome at what he does!
Thanks!

wow amazing!
how did you finish it btw? did you use shellac? polyurethane? or just the truoil?
Should I and back the sanding sealer before adding finish?
Love your videos, Big D. question: do you dilute the naphtalene that you use to clean off the top with water?
How do you finish the back, also with tru-oil? I'm also looking at options for finishing a flame maple over alder body and have heard that Alder doesn't take stain. I'm looking to do a darker blue back but am fine with seeing the brown through it.

Beautiful finish and a great video. Can I ask if you're at all worried about contamination of the dyes by dipping different coloured rags in them?
I have to ask - What issue of Fine Woodworking was that?
That reference guide to finish tones looks to be a good one to have.
TIA,
chase
Love your videos BigD! Question for ya. what do you cut the stain concentrates with? Thank you in advance!
Looks nice!
thanks!
What make of Naphtha is that Bro? There are so many variants, but watching you use it makes me want to get the one you have :)
What kind of finishes work with this? Polyurethane? Tung Oil? Great job!
Shellac :)
Hey Big D - Looks amazing. How much do you dilute the dyes? And how long does each layer of true oil have to dry before the next layer is applied?
Do you happen to remember the amount of dye you added to the water to achieve these hues? I'm just about ready to starting dying my body and any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Love seeing all the different woods. Have you used Osage on any of your creations?
I kept talking to my phone. "Stop touching its perfect" I was so happy you kept touching it. Never listen to me.
