  • Well I had this in my head for a bit. I finally got the chance to get it done. This is a neat coloring on my guitar body that I built.

I absolutely love this! It reminds me of a multicolor finish PRS did about 30 years ago that looks almost as though it were applied with a sponge. I always wanted to replicate it but didn't have the gumption to experiment. This finish not only does everything I liked about that old PRS finish, but it's the ONLY finish I can tolerate burl wood in. Nice work! Thanks for the video!

When the Velvet Oil goes on wow! You should run a competition at your local design school for a graphics mock-up of a guitar using these techniques... I bet the kids would have better plans than "just stick random blobs of colour on" haha. I think a H.R. Giger head would look amazing on the front....

I never use leather dyes on wood, I'm pissy that way , if I don't have 90%+ chemical compatibility I just won't do it .That being said.
    That's pretty ! Nice Continental drifts .
Is that dye alcohol based ?
If so there's something that I do with the die and acetone .
I usually use a gold flake background or any solid color but usually something bright. (Goldenrod works very well too)
Spray on all those colors you used not heavy just on and then dab it with a rag wetted with acetone don't wipe it don't do anything. Let it go you'll see and dab away . You can layer it out also .
    P. S. You are one of the better guitar guys one the tube .
And your a Journeyman Finisher unlike most of the turn around hires .
(You know , the one's that disappeared on the first break on the first day)
Due to Hereditary Chronic Pancreatitis . I can't anymore, so you get what I won't take to the grave , too much lost already by Masters not sharing .

Okay, I take a raw wood guitar body, put the dyes I want to get color, can I use a water based grain filler before using TruOil? My plan before was dye, water based filler, water based sanding sealer (all rattle can stuff) then water based spray lacquer. Watching you use TruOil (and now Velvet Oil),I want to try that. Less cure time and much less moisture and temperature sensitive . Let me know what you thinks. Thanks.

When building guitars starts to become boring, you can either do silly things to them or find another hobby. Some of your burls look really great... this one looks like a 5 year old colored it with his finger-paints.
