- I started off thinking I'll do a lemon burst/tiger eye finish in the style of PRS Guitars. But halfway through the project, I decided to do a charcoal guitar finish using Keda Black Aniline Dye and Tru-Oil.

Your guitar is looking sharp! Great job.
I like the shape of your guitar body. It uses elements from a few other guitars and combines them into something unique. Great job with the finish, too!
Originally, I was imagining taking some Gibson LP elements and combining with Fender offset guitar themes (Jazzmaster, Jaguar), but somewhere along the lines the little tail curl added in some Ibanez Destroyer vibes.
Thanks for stopping by!
🥳- it's looking great!
Thanks brother!
Really nice! And it's great to follow along with the experimentation and getting the thought process along the way!
Thanks! I wasn't sure if it would be too tedious watching the same basic process over and over again :)
@@zwitchguitars I really like when creators share how and why they do stuff including misstakes and changes in design and so on...
I personally find it boring when it's basically just an instruction video putting pieces together, so this is great!
Love your color here.
I really like that color combo. Looks great!
Thanks! With the lacquer I'm applying now, it's getting even darker, which I LOVE
I really like your original body style. There's something about it that really stands out. That's hard to do!
Thanks Greg! Somehow, I stumbled onto a great combination of Fender, Gibson and Ibanez.
Looking awesome!
Thanks! I guess I'll have to build another one to get my lemonburst :D
I love the blue/grey finish. Really nice guitar body
Thanks Steve! Once I put the Tru-Oil on the top and sides, I was sold. Almost like a woodie station wagon vibe
I love the chatoyance that you got after the 320 grit paper and the second coat of dye.
Thanks! It turned out to be a really special piece of wood
I have just got. Kit guitar recently with flamed maple veneer. I want this color. Would I be ok to do a sandbank like you did even though I don’t have a true cap?
Wow mate that tunred out awesome. Beautiful body design and the staining with the binding and the light side contrasts perfectly. I have never done any staining until like a week or so ago?? on anything other then some wood turning attempts decades ago. I bought the Keyda dye kit to see what I could learn on some scrap birch ply the maintenance dude had tossed out. I have begun staining my guitar and noticed the same thing with the black having a really purple tint to it. I almost thought I grabbed the blue from the kit it was that purple. But on the guitar it gets black in a few coats. Im using it as sort of faux binding on mine. The top was going to be a black base like you did then red and yellow over that. The wood grain wasnt taking the black well on mine so I sanded it all back and mixed my version of red and Im really liking that. Cant wait to get to where I can oil it up and see what it really looks like. I subbed so I can come back and watch more of what you did on your project.
Thanks for subscribing! Once I sprayed the lacquer, it definitely moved towards gray black than purple black.
Tackled the wiring today, so hopefully this can be wrapped up pretty soon. Already have a new project to think about :)
I was looking forward to seeing it in tiger eye!
Same! But the person who suggested black is also the person who just bought it, so tiger eye next time 😂
Do you think if I added glow in the dark pigment on the last layer and mixing it with the solution it would still glow. You seem like someone who knows more about stain then me so i was just wondering
I’ve never worked with that, but I would think that you’d add it to the clear coat not the stain coat
Sexy finish. What pickups are you thinking of ?
Thanks! I’m going with StewMac Golden Age humbuckers, for a vintage-y Les Paul vibe
I have just got a Kit guitar recently with flamed maple veneer. I want this color. Would I be ok to do a sandback like you did even though I don’t have a true cap?
It’s hard to say, probably depends on the kit. I would *guess* that you could probably sand back lightly once and be okay. I would just start with higher grit sandpaper like 320 just so you don’t put deep scratches in
Thanks a bunch for the quick reply. I’ve done initial sand of 220. I’ll lay down some black keda dye and see if I like what I see. I may or may not do a sandback depending on how that alone looks. Sometimes the black seems light enough that it gives a decent look.
Thanks.
purdy 👍
I would sanded and dyed it 10 more times.
Why not use Luthiers powder dye? That is also an aniline dye and much cheaper than Keda.
It was $18.50 and I’m still using the same kit two years later? Doesn’t feel like a place to optimize cost tbh
It ia about time you tube guitar builders dump the paper towel to apply color
Crimson guitars did a staining video way back and used paper towels for me that was a NO NO!! Great job!
I’ve definitely done it, it makes less of a difference with the color than it does with Tru-Oil. But now I just save old shirts so that they are always laying around the shop
Whats the name of that kind of body?
This is a body I designed myself, so it doesn’t really have a name yet. The person who bought it and I have been calling it the “Model Two” for now.
