  • Robert Johnson guitar lesson.
They’re Red Hot (Hot Tamales) is a great blues song from 1936.
More Hokum and Ragtime sounding than RJ’s usual Delta Blues and City Blues sound.
It’s a great song you may have heard The Red Hot Chilli Peppers performing on Blood Sugar Sex Magic.
Played on a vintage 1929 Gibson L-1 Guitar.

Great film! I like how you talk about making the song into a performance, I always find that is where the real fun is when learning a new song. I do the song "Hot Nuts" which is somewhat similar to this song and recorded in March 1936 by Lil Johnson. Robert Johnson recorded his song in November 1936, so may have been inspired by Lil as well as the Tamales seller.

      100% on both accounts!!
I see so many guys do this type of music on expensive guitars and note perfect but they miss the thing where you connect to an emotional centre of the song then connect that to an audience.
      It’s all about PERFORMANCE!
RJ performed the living daylights out of this song.
I know RJ lifted so many of his songs (as so many did) but also feel that so many parts of this and songs like Hot Nuts have very generic patterns, words and themes.
So much of composition is to recast and disguise other ideas that came before.
      🎼🎯🎼

    Oh yes, Martyn!
What a great video with the right instructions, vocals and history of Robert Johnson 👏
I do like your accent and the differences in your voice.
I was looking what tamales are and I came out on corn.
Your described it better with words and a good old picture of it.
That's what it makes to be 🔥 hot tamales!🌽
    Thank you,man🙌

They steam them in corn husks but it’s very stodgy. I don’t eat meat for a long time but I remember eating them when I did thinking this is too much fatty meatiness.
I hope this video opens a few doors for people. It’s not definitive. Just a breakdown with extra pointers!

    I love Hot Tamales!
For the extra measure in the intro, if you wanted to keep it in there what about treating it like a pick up note. At the end of the extra phrase the drummer can do a pickup to beat 1 of the song.

      @TheWashboardResonators  Před rokem

It’s however people want to interpret it. In my case of using dep drummers I found that straightening it meant that with little or no rehearsal you can get through a gig. 🎯

Top job mister…!! Clapton did a great version of this, some great slide by Doyle Bramhall II, the late great Billy Preston on keys, Jerry Portnoy on harmonica.. some line up.
