This feels almost betrayal at this point that Indian government did so much for Canadian Prime minister when he arrived at G20, even when his delegation was leaving his plane was not working but we helped them fixed it and have them stay in India respectively until plane is fixed. There is a pew survey recently done in Punjab which said 93% of the Sikhs in Punjab region are proud to be Indians. Also, India is not China where media and journalists are censored. I request Canadian journalists to come to India, go to Punjab and see themselves whether Sikhs are oppressed. You are true in your analysis. I am Hindu, but I have many close relatives who are sikh. I was born and raised in punjab among sikh neighbourhood and friends. Being Hindu I lived as a minority amongst Sikhs. But we have a lot of love and respect for each other. Punjab was an India state that was split into two at the time of partition in 1947, with 40% remaining in India & 60% allocated to Pakistan. These lands are still called Punjab on both the sides. Sikhs from the Pakistani side were uprooted and forced into India, since Pakistan was made for Muslims and India is a secular country. Hence there are no Sikhs in the 60% Pakistani Punjab, whereas the India Punjab is a majority Sikh state. Now the Sikhs are asking only for the India Punjab to be made a separate country, whereas Pakistanis are okay, because they ethnically cleansed their side of Punjab back in 1947. India is now paying the price for being secular and accommodating.

Whether stopping visa to canadian citizens would impact them or not is a different question. It reflects the relations between two countries. It also dilutes the weightage of your passport in terms of ranking.
Canada is not acting against Khalisthanis so this move from India side would stop radical khalisthani forces entering India. So now those radicals have to stay in Canada and make Khalisthan there in Canada.

Actually this banning of visas by India affects the Canadian Khalisanis the most as they frequently travel back and forth from Canada to the "motherland" to foment trouble. Drug running, arms smuggling and financing terrorism within Indian Punjab is what they specialize in. Unfortunately, a visa ban is a blunt instrument and will also impact good Canadians as well. On a different point, most Indians think it is hilarious that the Khalistanis conduct referendums all among themselves in Canada for a free Khalistan without involving the vast majority of Sikhs who actually live on the ground in Indian Punjab. Had their sham referendum been inclusive of Indian Sikhs, they would have experienced the taste of a crushing defeat as almost no Sikh in India has any desire for Khalistan.
A Canadian here. Please feel free to disregard but if you would like to read an unemotional take on the situation that represents the majority attitude in Canada, I'm posting this for you.
Most of us treat this diplomatic row as a curiosity. It just doesn't affect us much, and there are no harsh feelings against Indian immigrants. We have a lot of internal issues (like housing) at the moment, and that's what preoccupies us.
Please don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean that we support India's actions though. There will definitely be a cool-down period, no new trade agreements etc. for a couple of years. It's not because we support Khalistan or anything of this sort (most people here have no idea what it even means). It's just that India did something behind our back and we're not ok with that. But at the end of the day we have interest in India realigning with NATO, so it's only a matter of time before the issue is forgotten.
As for why Canada doesn't act against khalistani separatists, it's simply because Canada and India aren't close enough. India would like to be its own power so we aren't allies at the moment. Neither do we have significant trade relations. So at the end of the day Canada simply doesn't prioritize handling India's Khalistan problem. Please believe me I'm not trying to belittle India. I'm only trying to explain Canada's reasoning even though you probably don't agree with it - which is perfectly fine as long as you remember that countries tend to act in their own best interests.
Eventually, this is going to blow over. India has interest in countering China. Canada has interest in countering China. The US is going to mediate. As for Indians in Canada, I can assure you they will be perfectly safe here, protected from any reprisals. Nobody is going to attack them or their religion especially since the latter has nothing to do with this diplomatic conflict. But it also doesn't mean that Canadians will just nod quietly to those rooting for India. As I explained we don't support India's actions, so we'll speak back. Just remember, political disagreement in Canada is considered culturally acceptable and even expected. There are a lot of things people disagree on here, and that's just how it is. At the end of the day we tend to find some common ground and let disagreements fade away some day.

There’s 2 types visa a one year and a lifetime. So unless u had one in your hand you can’t go now. And Indian nationals who became Canadian citizens had to give up their Indian citizenship and passport.
