Many say that AC Odyssey is bland, boring, and pointless. I say that, while certainly too big for its own good, it's actually one the most expansive and impressive open world adventure RPGs in recent memory. In today's video, I, Luke Stephens, will try to explain why I think this game is really great and why you should give it a shot.

If you're not spending all your time being like "This isn't Assassin's Creed" and instead just enjoying the epic grandiose adventure that it is, then yes Odyssey is fantastic. I've replayed it quite a few times now.

The storytelling is silly even if you ignore the AC. There's A LOT of joke quests that are just absolute nonsensical drivel. That same kind of drivel even gets into the main missions every now and then.

I actually quite agree. Obviously it isn't really the "fault" of gamers when the game is called Assassins Creed. But yes, if forgotten and just played for what it is, Odyssey is quite good. I don't really enjoy the "tone" of the game that much and the overall voice acting (besides Kassandra) is not up to par. Other than that, the game is simply too bloated (even if it doesn't reach Valhalla levels) but quite enjoyable.

Yeah I had that same feeling with Origins (Odyssey as well). Both games feel like the world has a lot of love put into it. Origins even had the history explained mode. I loved both games and think Odyssey is the superior evolution of Origins and fixes most problems with that game. Yes Odyssey isn't really AC and that's my only problem with it as well as missing more possibilities for stealth play. Valhalla was just unbearable though. An awful story with awful characters. Throughout the entire story I was thinking why am I doing this? Why are they conquering England? To upgrade their small shitty village? And the worst thing is that it doesn't feel like you're conquering England. Towns like York feel lackluster and I completely miss the grandiose scale of the Roman architecture with the inferior english architecture around it. Eivor literally has no personality and it doesn't help that after 3 missions everyone throughout England knows who Eivor is and greet him as a superhero. Lastly they get the entire concept of vikings wrong. They are way too peaceful for them to be vikings. Vikings were raiders, murderers, rapers and enslavers. They took everything and burned down what was left. If that doesn't make for a good protagonist then don't make them the protagonists. They could have easily done a 'the last kingdom' like storyline with a viking who switched sides. I just couldn't get through the game and it took me over half a year to finish the base game whilst Origins and Odyssey I had finished in 1-2 months maximum.

I just love Ancient Greece, love the beauty of this game, the tone of the game is very fun and light and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Also you can learn a lot about Ancient Greece just observing people work, looking at the food you find at the market. They recreated Athens as close to how it was as possible, worked with archaeologists and historians to make it look and feel like you're really there.
The combat system is great and if you know how to build your character you can literally become a god, just a killing machine and it's satisfying.
The side quests are fun, some are funny, some are more serious but they never feel boring.

I get that people are busy and maybe don't have the time to sink into a game like that, but who says you have to beat the game in your hour or two after work? Small progress is still progress.
Besides that, at least having the option so that those who want to save time or play efficiently can, but design the game to also allow those of us who want that depth of exploration to have it too. The ONLY reason they wouldn't do that is because the effort to profit ratio wouldn't be as high, which I don't think is an issue with Odyssey.

I honestly like ac odyssey better than witcher 3 in almost every aspect the combat, the traversal, the music, the skill tree and progression, the world itself and the protagonist. Its has some of the most satisfying progression I have had the pleasure of experiencing in an rpg. They balanced short term and long term progression perfectly imo.
There was no grind for me either I can't really see how someone can play this game and not get sidetracked for hours doing sidequests and exploring. I thought it was quite bad especially as a game on its own tbh... (first AC game I've ever played btw), there wasn't really that much to like honestly.
Great graphics, fun combat and pretty landscapes/cities. But terrible quests, boring story, repetitive side content that gets soo tiring especially around the 30-40 hour mark. Unlikeable characters, except for Kassandra. And I almost forgot the awful level scaling...
This game felt like every other open world semi rpg game I had ever played before. Really nothing special. It's fun, but tedious

The naming argument is always going to annoy me. It's just a name. It's a title on a box. Call me crazy, but a game should be judged on the merits of it's gameplay, not on it's name. DarkSiders made some pretty fundamental changes with each new game, finally ending in an isometric ARPG, and no one suggested along the way that they should change the name because the gameplay changed. It's still a part of the AC universe, it's still pushing the story forward however slowly, and it still contains most of the same elements. There are just more ways to play these games now than the extremely narrow way they had before.

As a fellow Odyssey fan, I highly encourage you to revisit Forbidden West at some point. For all the reasons you say to not judge this game for what it's not, I say the same for HFW. You compared it to ER, which was fashionable given the timing, but ultimately unworthy of your typically circumspect judgement.
For about 90% of the game, HFW was everything I wanted and more from a sequel. I wasn't fully sold on the final story choices, but that doesn't change how truly breathtaking I found the bulk of the game to be. First, it was the most beautiful game I've played in 2022, still. I expect only Ragnarok will have a chance at knocking it down. Second, the side quests had a depth and care that is...simply the best in open world games to date. Everything that I loved about quest design from Witcher 3 and Odyssey and Skyrim and Dragon Age... this did it. Each story was different. Not hunting for 10 sharks or 5 bear skins. Deep, uniquely written side content that seemed almost UNIVERSALLY mo-capped. I lost my mind over how much custom mocap and voice acting there was. I've played about 95% of all available content and I only found two side quests events that didn't have some level of unique mo-capped conversation design. Just the most fantastic amount of love and care.
In terms of combat, HFW made some choices that I think made for a more balanced difficulty and methodology, but made it harder for you to cheese your way through by spamming traps and corruption arrows. Do I love that? No, because I really liked cheesing my way through mass robot slaughter with traps and bombs. But that change doesn't take away from what the game is, what it accomplishes, and how much I enjoyed it.
I loved Odyssey, and I love HFW. Give it another chance, and see it for what it is.

One favourite was propably the lady trapped in the tower. Turned out that it was actually a kinky role playing thing with the woman and "The knight in shining armour". If you misred the situation and attacked the man, he would leave, you would offer to guard the lady and another "savior" would come to help the damsel in distress. Then there was the warrior with a battle axe stuck to the forehead who had "some difficulties" to understand the situation he was in. You could leave the axe or remove it, which would of course kill him.

When I heard odyssey brought back naval combat and was in Ancient Greece, I was sold! As a history lover, Ancient Greece is a gold mine.

Kassandras voice actor was amazing and you really start to feel attached, which helped a lot with immersion.
I realized the seemingly “bloated” loot system was actually really fun and made new loot always exciting. I never knew when I’d find the next amazing dagger for my build.

Big cities only being a couple hundred meters away from each other feels so weird. I would’ve liked to feel more accomplished after each adventure, rather than just a short 2 minute horse ride and a ton of synchronization points. If you don't do the side content in Odyssey, you are playing the game wrong. The designers puts an unbelievable amount of effort into a world that is both huge and feels very much alive. You're SUPPOSED to explore the world and do the side content. I never had any problem keeping up with the level requirements because there's so much to DO in this vast open world. It doesn't have the philosophical or emotional depth of The Last of Us or The Witcher 3, but I find myself returning to this game because the world is so goddamn BEAUTIFUL it's just a joy to visit. It helped keep me sane during the pandemic and now I'm on my second playthrough and it's serving as a wonderful break from the dreary winter going on outside. It's better than going on vacation and sometimes I just want to boot it up and enjoy looking at the sea. I won't say the game makes you think, but the developers have made sure that it's always enjoyable, and I love the fact that you get to explore a world that actually existed thousands of years ago (except for the fantasy elements). Classical Greece is a fascinating and historically important setting, whereas Valhalla is set in medieval England, which holds little interest to me. Egypt during the Roman era is an interesting place, so I look forward to playing Origins as well.
Ubisoft is still adding content to this game FIVE YEARS later, ant it has procedurally generated quests and world events that mean you can keep playing it forever if you like, and that's something I might do. After playing through again a couple of times it feels like one of the most symbiotic AC games. The 3 main story lines, the side quests and character arcs, the world, the mythology all link together so well it feels seamless. Unlike Valhalla (which I still really like) which had everything very segmented Odyssey feels like a complete game that almost purely exists within its own world. And the world feels living and breathing and always progressing which is a triumph considering the vast size of the map. You can pretty much go anywhere you want after the opening section (you might die) but nothing is really closed off. And Kassandra is one of my favourite main characters. Ok so maybe its not the greatest in regards to adding much to the overall AC storyline, but this makes it a better game on its own as its not constantly trying to tie back to the AC universe and can focus on what it did great.

Great video! Assassins Creed Odyssey was my first game in the series, i was choosing between buying it and imortals phoenyx rysing, and im glad i chose odyssey! Its my favorite game of all time, i have never had so much fun, emotion and the feeling of adventure from any other game, the only way i can describe it is that it truly was an Odyssey. I truly feel like i made friends, foes and companions during that adventure, so much so that i 100% the game (including achievments), with 300 hours played. And it never felt like a chore, it was always fun, intriguing and by the end, even a little bit nostalgic. I guess it could have been the right game for the right period of my life but i truly think it is my favorite game of all time and an experience that i will remember forever.

To me, AC Odyssey is simply one of the rare few games set in the past but doesn’t fall into the overused video game locations. Seems like most devs are hellbent on only setting games in medieval Europe, Japanese samurai, Caribbean pirate, or Norse viking inspired settings. We need more games set in antiquity! There’s so much untapped history/mythology that the fantasy practically writes itself.
Could you imagine an open world RPG set in Bronze Age Mesopotamia during its collapse, or during the Roman Kingdom before they incorporated their neighboring people? It’s just familiar enough to recognize but distant enough to wow us

In my teenage we payed attention to music. The others bought different music magazines and learnt about bands, members, etc. I never cared about the musicians just only the music itself (I like that or not). This attitude is still with me. For example I don't care an actor's or movie director's private life if I enjoy a movie. So I always see the product and how can I enjoy that. In this way I don't care who is published a game or how a game fits in its serie or other games in the genre. For me a game is good if it can pull me in its world, the tasks and the story is interesting and the control is logical and user friendly. In the AC serie the Black Flag is in the second, Odessey is in the first place for me. I don't care which is belong to which AC era I simply care I am pleased to play with and don't regret any minute to spending with them.
Note: simulator games are a little bit exeptions. They hasn't story or just a very thiny one but I like to play with them because they can pull me in. To sitting in a cockpit of a front-propellered plane or of a spaceship or in a cabin of a truck or train is can be remarkable. I think the key for that is to learn to enjoy the moment and don't rush. For example in Odessey I usually walk with my character and pay attention to every detail of the ancient greek world. I admire the buildings, the monuments, the clothes, the landscapes. I actually play it like a simulator: I control my character as a person could behave in that time. Could he/she run all along the greek world? No way. He/she could walk on foot and could use a horse for distance or in a hurry. I play the games in this way. And for more immersion I always turn off the backgroud music of a game. If you do that you can realize the sound of the wind as it moves the leaves on the trees, you can hear as your character step in the mud, the songs of the birds in the forest and the bugs in the grass. You cal hear different voices at day or night. And as the people talk in a city, the children are playing and laughing..
    Peace

I do really enjoy Odyssey as a standalone Greek Mythology RPG. My biggest gripe with it this is that, for me at least, it’s not an Assassin’s Creed game. There is a different between supernatural mythology and science fiction. The Isu were not gods who ruled from Olympus or part of some wider religious mythology, they were simply a breed of more advanced humans with additional senses who garnered the human race into slavery. There are fantastical elements such as the apples of Eden and other objects of similar status, but it was all based in advanced technology. So, for me to straight up introduce magic into a series that never really had it is a strange choice. Again, I think Odyssey is a really good Greek Mythology RPG, but I think it fits poorly into AC as a whole.

In terms of roleplay, I play different builds with Alexios and Kassandra.
Alexios being a more typical warrior Spartan. More tanky, brute force and a bit of a lone wolf.
Kassandra being more cunning and tactical-minded assassin-hunter because I imagine she wouldn’t be physically stronger than a lot of trained soldiers.
She also focuses more on relationships. Using tamed animals and calling her allies into combat.
Building her crew/ship. She would sink the ships rather than take on the boarding crew. Because that’s more risk for her.
Alexios would board the ships and mow through all of the crew members.

I always joke to my friends "Assassin's Creed Odyssey is absolutely not my favorite Assassin's Creed game, but it's my favorite game." I think if Ubisoft had been brave enough to release this as it's own game and unconnected to the franchise it would have been insane.
Also something I don't think people touch on in Valhalla/Odyssey comparisons is that clearing the map is required in Valhalla in order to progress the main quest... but there are tons of zones you DON'T need to visit in Odyssey in order to beat the game. Pretty much most of the top half of the map could be ignored and you could still complete the three ending questlines.
If Ubisoft had just pitched this as "You're an ancient Greek demigod with godly powers on your own big adventure during the Peloponnesian War!" and not done the AC title (which they ended up doing with Immortals Fenyx Rising anyways), this would have been a huge hit in the gaming community.

One of the best RPGs in recent times. I'm still playing it on occasion because nothing has come out since that has game play that is as fun. I would have tweaked the story a little with Myrrine and the First Blade mess. Myrrine would never have left Naxos. Given the first part of her arc after we find her, it would have been more in character for her to hatch a plan to pretend to want to get their house and citizenship back in order to expose the Cult King, and then promptly burned that house to the ground and returned to rule Naxos. She would have also been more likely to kill Nikolaus on sight than take him back, no mater what... Seriously, would she have ever given up her own rule for squalor in a hut in Sparta? From Military wife betrayed by her own husband to vagrant to pirate to ruler and then chose squalor in a place with a King that wanted to put her to death - and he was the good one. Great writing there...

People love to shit on Ubisoft and it's a huge trend with their games that fans love to shit on a new series entry, but by the time the next entry comes out, all of a sudden the older one was awesome and the newer one sucks ass. I'll use FC5 and 6 as an example. I remember seeing a lot of people dislike 5, but then 6 comes out and all of a sudden 5 was awesome and Joseph Seed was incredible. When 7 comes out, people will say about 6 "it had its flaws but it was actually a very fun update to the Just Cause formula and woah Gus Fring cameo"

Played this game again yesterday (actually continued my 5th playthrough, after taking a break from the game of about 1,5 years).
Went to a Fort to clear it out, because it's always fun (more so than in it's 2 siblings). Killed a few guards while sneaking through the location, left the bodies where they fell.
It wasn't long until 2 other guards discovered them, and they were talking between them the usual stuff when they get alerted (someone is here, find them etc). I was nearby, hidden, they couldn't see me. The alert status ended, so one of them went to pick up one of the corpses and carry it away, like they always do. But before he picked it up, he said: "I'm sorry, my friend!"... Left me O_O...
And another instance. I was sneaking around another fort, targeting soldiers with arrows. One guard was alone, standing near a bridge. Shot an arrow on the bridge trying to make it run and hide, like they always do when being shot at, even if they were hit or not.
But I shot a bit too far, so the guard was only alerted by the sound. To my surprise, it went over to the arrow, bent over to it and mumbled to himself something like: "It's an arrow... but it doesn't look like one of ours. There's someone out here" then he went on alert status.
Now THAT level of detail, you encounter less and less nowadays, especially in this genre.
Out of this trilogy, Odyssey is the one that mostly stands out, and the one I love the most!
I may be a bit biased because I loved greek myths ever since I was a kid.
But for a huge open world with many copy-paste assets, look-alike NPC's, small repetitive boring side quests etc the game is also peppered with special care proof instances, and details you can only see (or hear) while getting lost in it's world, and actually playing it.
I always hoped the dev team behind it would do another title.... but AC Valhalla was done by the Origins team, and it showed, because combat and fort "liberating" were NOT fun.
Ubisoft seems to prefer their style, which is quite unfortunate...
And now the series moves on with other devs. Here's hoping the upcoming titles take a look back and see what made Odyssey fun to play, and don't repeat Valhalla's mistakes.

Once you have done everything in Greece you have to go back to Khephalonia and right at the harbor there's a purple square where you should go and talk to a woman, this will take you on vacation to the island of Korfu, where you need to complete all the quests (3) and find all the Ostrakas and the treasure. Once this is done you will find the REAL ENDING where the Credits appear and you can close the story. In fact, don't akip the credits just fasta forward them and you'll have an extra cool cut scene. I absolutely loved Odyssey, I never got a crack at the DLC's but from what I've heard I didn't miss much, but damn, the base game is so damn good imo, Ancient Greece was a fantastic setting. my one critique for it was just from an experience I had that I remember not so fondly, there was a point in the main story where I was so under leveled, despite completing a whole lot of in world things for XP, I literally had to spend close to 5 or 6 hours just grinding constantly to even make the minimum level required to continue the main story, and yeah you might think, that's not so bad because there's fun side quests and stuff, but when you start running out of quests you're actually at the right level to complete and you just see the big red skulls by every quest indicating you will die if you try, and have to go about scouring every inch of the map for new quests within your level and you still need tons of XP to even continue the story, that's just overly grindy and not fun. It definitely sucked the joy out of the game for that 5 or 6 hour duration, but besides that one bad experience, and once back on track, it was awesome. I will say the supernatural elements, I really didn't mind that much, to be fair AC has always had a little bit of that, like is Minnerva talking to Ezio from beyond the grave really that much more grounded in reality than a Minotaur in Ancient Greece? At least it fits thematically, I would have an issue if they had like an Orc or hoardes of Goblins or something wild like that.

For me, despite the ship stuff and the exploration, I felt like Odyssey was a backstep from Origins. I loved Unity despite the buggyness and enjoyed a lot of the missions, though I thought the story needed a bit more work. Considering Arno's real father was assasinated and we never go after Shay. I didn't enjoy anything in Syndicate other than the black box missions but with Origins I was stunned. When I heard it was going to be more of a "RPG" I was *extremely* disappointed as a fan of the early games, but Origins made me hopeful. The story of Bayek was interesting, seeing the beginning of the Hidden Ones, everything felt great. I didn't feel that Layla was the *best* new modern day character but at least she was somewhat interesting. All of that was killed for me by Odyssey. Layla became actually braindead, the story didn't feel super interesting, the side quests were actually pretty good and I enjoyed exploring, but I also hated not being able to one-shot assassinate enemies (which I think? they added something for it? I played at launch). Don't even get me started on the DLC, specifically the Darius one. Legacy of the First Blade ruined all the mystery surrounding Darius, the "first true Assassin" and the ending with the child and the pyramids made *NO* sense considering the Pyramids were already built by then. It honestly made my head hurt. But overall I don't think Odyssey was the worst (thats definitely Valhalla) but compared to Origins it definitely lowered my expectations.

@N7 Andy irrelevant? Then why do they keep the same excuses for changing stuff it it's irrelevant? They should just do a new, separate thing and not ruin the original thing.
Odyssey is the game that messed every single storyline up, as if it was its goal to retcon and ruin everything it touched.

I 100% this game and it was great. Used to put some podcasts or music on and smash through it. Some of the environments were just so beautiful and immersive, definitely a must play. Plus the whole mercenary thing was great, they just randomly show up sometimes and you’re like oh damn, let’s do this.
I never had the grind to get to higher level to do main missions because I just did a load of side stuff before hand

I really love this game and the atmosphere it brings, also is one of the few games that really keeps me hooked.
(Spoiler warning) I started it a week ago and I am still in athens, taking my time with the side quests. I like to do every single thing before I leave to the next region (minus the timed quests/board quests cause they are endless). As much as I love this game, there is a thing that I don't like about it. This world is so immersive and the story got me hooked and sometimes I don't know what to do next so I don't ruin the flow of the story and screw up some dialogue/future quests options. For example, I did that two times already:
    1. In the first island, you had a quest with Pheobe and she begged you to save a sick family from a priest that wanted to kill them so the sickness wouldn't spread. You had the choice to let the priest kill them or to kill the priest and spare them. The ultimate outcome is that if you let them live, the sickness will spread to the whole island. Here, I didn't even have the choice because while I was exploring, I bumped into the area where the priest was and he attacked me so i killed him. then I did the quest and basically it automatically counted as if I chose to save the family.
    2. After the first thing happened, I became cautious with my gameplay cause I did't want to mess up the story so I did the story quests first, then the gold side quests and then the rest. I still managed to mess up somehow in Odessa's questline. While I was in Megaris, I did every single thing as I stated and Odessa's questline seemed done. I had the option to recruit her on my ship and that is what I did. Well, a few regions later I find myself doing a Sokrates side quest where you had to choose between killing a woman to eliberate a slave or refusing to kill the woman but the man remains a slave. That woman is Odessa. Well, this would have been an interesting quest but I messed it up because I recruited Odessa on my ship ages ago so my choice was automatically to spare the woman.
Honestly, if I still had the choices I would probably choose the same things and have the same outcomes but these details made me too aware of the stuff I do in this game. On the other hand, somehow is kinda realistic because you do stuff and kill people in the same world you live in without being aware that maybe later you should have met them, screwed someone's family or an entire set of conversations that you didn't have the chance to have or whatever.

Its a real shame people criticized ac odyssey as one of the worse games ever and ubisoft clearly listened which was bad for valhalla. They downgraded so many rpg mechanic from odyssey its insane no citizens being able to fight, lack of extensive side questlines instead opting for main story to make you explore the whole world, skill tree I don't even know what they were thinking with that its a jumbled mess, reduced the amount of outfits in the game drastically, ship gameplay neutered(yes it make sense historically but its still eh) and overall the world was more bland. I still enjoyed it but Odyssey was a masterpiece. Ac Red is being developed by the Odyssey team I can only hope they make it more like Odyssey not Valhalla.

I feel like an actual spartan warrior playing this game. The only thing I can't stand is the "Follow this person" missions. Those have always driven me crazy. Also, if the CREATORS of the game say it's an Assassins Creed game, it's an Assassins Creed game.

Ever since the new shift into most of the playable characters being descendants of literal gods or godlike people, odyssey was the only game in the new trilogy to actually make me feel like a demi god, the abillities were more than just flashy moves, you could slow time, manifest etheral bulls, become invincible.

Odyssey is my second favorite AC title right behind AC2. I think the main complaint for odyssey is that the enemies are too spongy. This is because casual players want to be good at all aspects of combat. If choose your class from the start (hunter, warrior or assassin) and specialize your character toward those strengths, you will have no trouble taking down enemies.

    Great video!
I’m 41 years old, played some of, if not all what’s widely considered the greatest games ever made.. I got asked a question by a mate at work a few months ago, he asked me “Not the best game you’ve ever played, but what’s your favourite game” I thought for a while, then said, Assassins Creed Odyssey.. The realisation took me a little by surprise, especially when I named a reasonably modern game when I must have played literally thousands of games in my time. I thought about it properly later on and just thought there has to have been a game I’ve enjoyed more than Odyssey, but honestly, there isn’t.. It’s not without faults (If I was to be hyper critical, I could probably write an essay on the things that’s wrong with the game), but despite the warts, I loved and continue to love my experiences playing Odyssey.
I can 100% understand why AC fans would hate this game, if I was an AC fan and played a game that had completely changed direction, I’d be bitterly disappointed too.. fortunately I’m definitely not an AC fan, in fact, Odyssey is the only Assassins Creed game I’ve enjoyed. (I’ve played them all)
Greek Mythology, massive and beautiful world with small islands to explore, pirating, smooth and very fun combat, an upgrade system that keeps me coming back time and time again, a story (although not great) none irritating but actually likeable characters, fun sub stories and Mythical monsters all rapped up in a game that is actually quite historically accurate, it’s just fun! Perfect for me I guess!
The last thing I’ll say, I know they’re reverting back to their roots with Mirage, but I really did hope they’d have made Skull and Bones into a sort of sequel to Odyssey, keeping the same mechanics humour and content. Black Flag just doesn’t satisfy that pirating itch.
