I think that's exactly the problem though, you didn't think of it as an AC game and that's what made it fun. It's very appealing but in a way that's not paying homage to what came before it very well. As an old AC fan, I'll admit the game itself is fine for what it is, but it's carrying the AC franchise name with it and for that, it and Valhalla will forever be bad games to me because they're not genuine to their advertising and what they're fundamentally supposed to be. If it was just a spartan history game that loosely was tied to AC and the title was just Odyssey I think I could forgive it. Ubisoft didn't have the balls to drop the AC title and expect the game to carry its own weight. It's a high budget game and they need more money money money.

    • @dodesskiy1
      @dodesskiy1 Před rokem +4

@@TheLeftCulprit You answered yourself there. The actual devs wanted no AC in it. The big wigs demanded the name recognition. Compare Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 15 for me. Let alone the fact that the first one was to be the last game by the dev team. But 14 more completely different are all final. It's this particular franchise that has these few thousands of rabid fans not wanting any change for decades VS the millions that love what was made, and never comment on CZcams.

I remember how sad I felt when I first beat Odyssey, realizing it would never be the same, already knowing the end and the entire storyline, the islands felt empty without the chaos, the cultists, and all the fallen protagonists. Then Ubisoft decided to launch the Fate of Atlantis, and man, I mean, playing in ancient Greece is almost unbeatable, but being able to play in Elysium and the Underworld of that same Greece (in mythology) is just f*cking incredible and unexpected. The music, story, world, side quests, combat, everything was just so well done in GoW. So coming to AC Odyssey I felt quite let down, the story isn't as interesting, the combat feels jarring, the graphics are too demanding, the world feels vast and quite empty. I 100%'ed this game and I absolutely despised it. The gigantic copy pasted map, the same endless side activities for over 100 hours of grinding like it's an MMO. I found the story very unsatisfying as well. So you just make up with your family and live happily ever after in Sparta - wow amazing ending 10/10 (I'm not counting the DLC). Same with the Brotherhood - you spend hours assassinating its members and collecting clues, only then to just have the option to join their leader because why not?
If you like the game - that's fine, to each their own. I'm just explaining why this is easily my least favorite game in the series. I came back after several years to Syndicate to see if it's as bad as people remember, and I honestly thought that game was miles and bounds above Odyssey.

You get a huge map and so much to explore, ship traveling and combat, gear progression, companions... It's truly amazing and I'm sad that people didn't acknowledge it for being what it is. Looks like people took longer to appreciate it and now Ubisoft was forced to go into different routes.

The story was ok but I did really enjoy some of the quests. I felt like there was always something to do and that kept me interested to complete the base game. Then I got burned out and did none of the DLC content.
I really enjoyed my time and found it a great game to relax to after work. The combat was easy enough that I didn't feel frustrated but had enough challenge to make me feel good after most fights.
The mercenary mechanic was annoying at times but not game breaking.
In general, I felt that many reviewers were too harsh on the game.
There is no other game series that puts in so much effort and energy to recreate a historical time period and I feel fortunate that I live in a time where I can explore Ptolemaic Egypt, Classical Greece, Revolutionary Paris, Golden age of piracy in the Caribbean, etc... with this series.

AC:Odyssey feels good now cause the newer games are even worse, but standing beside the likes of Rdr2 and God of war at the time it is bloated and drawn out lacking coherence of hours played vs progress in narrative content. It's massively lacking when the reviewer spends more than 6 hours to play it again.

The thing is that “trying Odyssey” isn’t going to expose its problems which were mostly its repetitive and increasingly bland feeling where you progress deeper and deeper into the game but nothing changes, nothing gets more difficult, nothing gets more epic except you fight a few mythical creatures one time at the end. The decisions are shallow, the mapmaking is shallow, the islands all look, feel, and play the same, and the disappointment increases as you finally get to the high level regions you couldn’t go to at the beginning but could always see on your map, and you learn there was never anything to work toward or see in those regions, they are clones of where you already are in all but the number next to their health bar. The core mechanics and some occasional good content were always good, that’s what disappoints me the most about Ubisoft games, they make some of the best cake batter and they bake it into the most boring cakes.

    • @brett84c
      @brett84c Před rokem +45

Totally agree. The game had an amazing foundation and a lot of great elements, but there was nothing you experience at hour 40 that you hadn't already experienced at hour 10. However, I will say that the game is still rewarding to explore just for the sake of seeing the different unique cities and areas on the map. Yes, most islands look the same, but they all still feel just unique enough to be nice to just walk around in and take in the views.
Ultimately, yes, the game needed more variety that revealed itself as the hours went by to give you more things to learn and master, but instead, you're a God by hour 20, and then nothing is really a challenge after that unless you boost the difficulty and turn everything into OP damage sponges. Not fun. I still love the game, but it has failed to hook me longterm despite having only ever gotten 60% of the map discovered in any given playthrough.

I talked to socrates, I helped the father of medicine, I found father and mother, I spoke to gods, I took down a cult, I fought mythical creatures, I swam with whales, I helped civilians with their problems, I went on tours, I put on a show at an amphitheater, I saved captives, I took down an imposter, I sailed the seas, I made an assassin build, I found Poseidon’s trident, I went to Atlantis, Elysium, and The Underworld.

Since a kid I was obsessed with greek mythology and this game delivers everything I have learnt throughout my whole life about greek mythology. The huge map with so much to do, so gorgeous with so many side characters and quests that don't feel like basic content to make the game longer, but are memorable fun and sometimes dramatic. I remember finding the Poseidon trident for the first time, realizing that the mythical monsters are in game and I can fight them, collecting the heros' armor sets and discovering atlantis going in blind gave me a feeling that I have never even remotely close experienced in a video game.

I upgraded every 6-8 levels starting at lvl 15. Everyone said upgrading isn’t viable until level 40-50 but it wasn’t too hard to for me as long as I put effort into gathering resources. Can’t agree that Odyssey has more branching outcomes than TW3. There’s the plague quest that affects the world, the baby one, and the Monger, while the rest only affect the family story, which doesn’t change anything in regards to its ending, simply who is alive or dead. The Witcher 3 had far more, from all the completely different main endings, to the quests like the Baron, the Crones, Keira, the Skellige one’s, Radovid, Roche, Emhyr, Triss’s quest, all the quests that you do that affect who helps you at Kaer Morhen. There’s more quests, and you also have the different endings you get for the expansions, unlike Odyssey who’s DLC endings are all the same.
So which quests have big impacts on the world aside from the few I mentioned? I might of missed them, or forgot as I haven’t played Odyssey in a while, but I can’t recall, and I definitely don’t think it has more unique and/or big impact quests than TW3.

For TW3 one ending has you adventuring with Ciri, another has her become Empress, and the last has Ciri likely dead. And seeing as all those 9 Odyssey endings are 99% the same and are just slight variations of the same linear ending, I might as well add all the different character endings TW has. From Emhyr’s ending, Radovid’s, Triss’s, Geralt’s, Yennefer’s, Dijkstra, Cerys/Hjalmar’s, Even the Baron and Keira. So not only does it have better main endings that are all completely different, it also has more endings altogether with all the plentiful and better characters it has.
This level of quality applies to The Witcher’s DLC too. From all the quests, and possible endings you get in HoS and B&W compared to Odyssey’s linear Legacy of the First Blade and Fate of Atlantis one’s that end one way, and one way only.

I think what I really loved about this game was starting out as Kassandra being a mercenary in rags to many months later, almost 2 years later, decking her out into becoming a spartan goddess who not only saved her entire family (Yep, I got the best ending first try, which was incredibly lucky of me, because I didn’t watch any gameplay😊) but also hunting down the mythologies and defeating them as well as assassinating the entire cult responsible for driving her family apart in the first place and becoming a hero across the entire Greece world. This game to me was not an Assassin’s Creed per say but it was 100% an Odyssey that I do not regret partaking on. This game was amazing and I felt very proud of myself of all I’ve achieved with Kassandra on her journey..

I am one of the rare people who likes all of the AC games (except Unity & Rouge - skipped).
I loved the original for where it was, what it offered, and the bizarre story it told.
Ezio was incredible and brotherhood was the apex of the trilogy.
Black Flag is the ultimate pirate game.
Unity’s Paris, Origin’s Egypt, Odyssey’s Greece, and Valhalla’s England were all incredible feats unto themselves. The recreation of these places is awe inspiring, and, I believe is the hallmark of an Assassin’a Creed game.
Say what you want, but even a bad AC game has an excellent recreation of time since last.
The year I played Valhalla I really sucked myself in Viking history, language, lore, and Norse mythology. I thought about it all the time. It influenced my music, things I would say, and motivated me to do a ton of research. I loved my time in this world.
As for Odyssey, watching you play and talk about this game put a big small on my face. What a masterpiece of a game this is! This is the definitive Ancient Greece game! The voice acting from Cassandra was great. The storyline involving the Phiobe was also a complete hit when it came to making me care about an NPC. Her storyline provided my Cassandra with the motivation to continue on her quests. Honestly, the Phiobe character is one of the best NPC's in the series: sort a perfect blend of emotions that the character invokes. I also liked the various items which gave you quite a few playstyle options and the monsters/mythical creatures seemed much less out of place in an ancient Greek world that we commonly associate with myths and legends. The ship combat was also good, though like Black Flag it was a bit too easy.

I have always had the same stance on this game.
It has a lot of qualityes
    - The world is GORGEOUS, yes it may be HUGE and at times PLAIN and BORING, but it's GORGEOUS, full of details that acutally make people want to learn more about that era
    - The gameplay as a standalone is very fun, except on higher dificulties where the game just becomes a "smash the life sponge for 20 seconds with same attack"
    - The main story and side quests can be very interesting
    ...
HOWEVER, my problem with this, is that it makes no sense in the AC space..., i mean, what is the point of, for a "reboot", going back to the ORIGIN'S of Assassin's, if in the next game we will be going even furher back? And the connection makes absolutely no fucking sense....
This game as a standalone would be awsome, call it wtv the fuck they want, use another IP i dont care, call it Odyssey only or something, delete all the supposed AC references (Of which there are not many) and release it like that, but as an AC game, it's even worst then Valhala.
Instead of this crap of an AC, we should've gotten a Origin's sequel, where we would play as Aya in Rome, that would be a fucking best seller, not only would Ubisoft shut every fucking one about the "not creating a real female lead" story, but they would give an amazing progression to the story that Bayek started, and with that Rome game, with Aya, the interactions in Valhala where we eventually learn that the notes on the old AC "bunkers" are about her would be even more amazing, because we actually spent 100s of hours with her, and not only 10...

Not a big fan of this game but it does some things better than Elden ring does with its open world. In terms of systems and quests are more fleshed out than Elden Ring.

One of my biggest issues with this game is just how miserable the grind is in this game. If you have to pay an extra fee to make the game’s progression feel “normal,” to me that speaks to the game itself simply not being acceptable

Don’t know if it was different when it first came out, but I played through it recently and this absolutely was not the case. I never paid a single extra fee and found the game totally fine. I did maybe half the side quests (excluding the radiant ones which I did none of) and this enabled me to level up nicely in line with the main quest line requirements.

It really kinda depends, if you don't do that side content than you'll be really behind on levels. But if you do a lot of the side content and explore, you'll end up over leveled. But yes, the game has a really huge grind.

I have spent more than 200 hours on this game and its the game tht can give u chills! If u have played the Atlantis DLC, it can make u cry and it can make u wonder what a phenominal experience this game can be if one gets really attached to the storyline! Every fucking detail in this game was accurate to its best! Even the Spartan Shields with the Omega Symbol on it that represented Courage and Honour to the Spartans. And the thing about Kassandra being alive even after 1000s of years and dying by passing the Staff of Hemes to Layla!

Bro! By the end of the game, Alexios/Kassandra had become a COMPLETELY different person from the person they were. They were no longer that lone mercenary from the small island of Kephallonia, instead were people of great wisdom, who argued philosophy with the likes of Aristotle! The character development you go through in Odyssey is mind blowing to say the least!

I found a lot of the dialogue and general writing of this game to be incredibly basic and inconsistent in tone. Many say that Valhalla made them think Ubisoft dropped the ball but that is how I felt about this game, I tried to enjoy it, had fun looking at the pretty face that is this game but the combat, characters and story got progressively boring to me. when I was done with the game I felt simply that I had wasted my time.

I had this game down as a bit cheesy and dismissed it far to soon, but since then I have come back and realised the issue was I played as the brother, who while voiced well often comes across cringy and a bit 90s action hero which doesn't work here, the sister is delivered in a much heavier way and while still a bit of an action hero she brings alot of heart felt emotion to the role and it drastically changes how much you care for whats going on in the world and those in it
