- I wish my title was clickbait. It’s unfortunately not. The worst nightmare of Miss Scarlet & The Duke fans is becoming true. Stuart Martin is leaving the show. Let’s talk about how this ridiculous decision was taken, whether he’s going to take any part in Season 5, and discuss whether PBS is signing the death warrant of Miss Scarlet & The Duke or should I say Miss Scarlet?

I will not see the show without the duke,it's so sad 😢
When I learned of this change I quite literally was in shock and mourning for a couple days. I recognize Stuart Martin's right and desire to go on to other roles and I wish him well. However, I am certain that the writer's knew of this in plenty of time. They made a decision to go for a 5th season without the Duke leaving their loyal fans so disappointed. They should have decided to bring the Duke and Eliza together permanently in Season 4 and make this the last season. The fans would be disappointed that the show had ended but they would be pleased that it ended happily. This show worked because of the strong chemistry between Eliza and the Duke. Without that the show has nothing really to recommend it and becomes very ordinary. It is not something that I care to watch and I think a large number of the loyal viewers will feel the same way. I predict bad ratings for Season 5 and the end of the series.
I thought I was the only one who felt like that! Very disappointed. I saw a movie I think he did when he left MSTAD early last year. It was called Rebel Moon Child of Fire and I found it online. I love scifi so I was quite interested.
Disappointing is a polite way to put it. What a piece of $#$$.
His role was a village hunter. OK, l thought let's see what it was all about. He had barely one, maybe two lines. And was on screen for about a minute, if that. His character contributed absolutely nothing to the plot and after the first 5-8 minutes you never saw him again. He wasnt even on any of the publicity YT videos because his character was irrelevant.
I would say he needs a better agent cuz that was some weird $#$$.

I think it will be saved if there is another love interest where the sparks really fly, giving us all the swoonworthy moments we wanted throughout this entire show. They have to really have some giant twist to keep my interest.
I think the only way this program will be saved is if they are able to get an awful lot of new viewers who did not experience the chemistry between William and Eliza. Think about what real chemistry is - it is magical and it is rare. No one knows where it comes from or why some people have. In the history of the large and small screens few actors had this kind of chemistry. The actors that did have it were paired together in many movies. Kate Phillips and Stuart Martin have chemistry and that chemistry between them would probably carry over to other acting projects. I predict in the future they will have many opportunities to work together and will be sought after. This type of chemistry cannot be duplicated and is rarely seen. Miss Scarlet and the Duke has been blessed and cursed. It was blessed because for four seasons in the episodes where the Duke was present the program was electric. Without the magic of this pairing the electricity and sparks are gone. Chemistry is not created by humans that is why no matter how good the writing, directing and acting is in the future this program will not work and there will probably not be another romantic interest that can replace the Duke. Acting together Kate and Stuart had that very unique special thing called "chemistry".
I missed Moses the whole last season !! Getting rid of William too !? Dumb really dumb
The news is heartbreaking and devastating for many people. Stuart left because his character was ridiculed and RN never had any intention to get them together. She never expected people would love William as much if not better than Eliza. He’s truly an amazing man and I am crazy about him. The episodes without him were already a physical and mental torture for me so not seeing him anymore at all is going to kill me. The show is over and I predict the writers have made a monumental mistake and they will realise it sooner than later.
You are so right. The writers really made a huge mistake. Once Stuart Martin announced his intention to leave they should have let them get together and end the show with Season 4. Instead they have decided to keep going on a ship that is doomed to sink!
@@lindawalker2451 Absolutely agree! They should have got them together in series 4 and then ended the series in a satisfying way. Arguably they should made them a couple in series 2/3. That would have been more satisfying to watch. To me, the will they/ won't they was starting to grow stale anyway, I was desperate to see some movement
100% The Duke inadvertently became more likeable than Eliza. It's not that you can't have a show driven by a strong female character, but Eliza and William were introduced as a pair from day one. If they wanted her as a solo main character, the writers should have made that clear early on and made her more likeable, this show now feels like a bait and switch!
Duke was the glue holding a lot of character relationships together. I will miss seeing him interact with Fitzroy too. It felt like the Duke had waaaay more character growth than Eliza....what's weird is almost all the characters from Ivy, to Mr Potts to Fitzroy all feel like they have had more character growth than Eliza. I liked Eliza in series one, but something odd started to happen with the writing, Eliza felt like she was becoming more ruthless and more of a user - just generally more unlikeable. Whilst William seemed to be getting nicer and more understanding, she seemed to be lying to him more, being rude to her friends. That bit where she just goes off to the rookeries and completely ignores Moses, and the season 3 episode 5 where she sends the guy to prison even though his wife is pregnant was cold. Unless Eliza has some major character growth next season, or the side characters (Fitzroy, Ivy, Phelps, Potts) get more screen time next season I honestly don't think there'll be enough in the show to keep me watching
I agree. Don't think Kate is strong enough to go anywhere with this new scenario.
The Duke made the show. The both of them together were great and lovable. I don't think can watch the show anymore. 😭 This broke my heart 😢
I agree, they were absolutely great together. I have no interest in Eliza being with anybody else as a love interest. This is a sad situation and a lesson in what happens to a wonderful show when a really unthinkable decision is made.

Like any loyal fan of MSATD I like the show because its fun,well written and I watched because of the relationship between Eliza and William. NO William? What is the point?
Eliza is a good character, but the interaction between her and William was the interest.
I wish they had tied it up and ended the show at the end of Season Four. The episodes without Duke were not nearly as much fun, and yes its easy to say Stuart Martin was not difficult to watch!! Easy on the eyes. 😁😁
It was a bit of escapism and something to look forward to. Disappointed that I dont have that to look forward to anymore, because I wont be watching. I read somewhere else on YT that Rachael New was goin' on about it being a 'feminist' show. Well I am female, not young, and I do not want to watch that. I loved what it was, not what it will be.
Stuart Martin is also very talented and believable, as is Kate Phillips ,and they worked well together. I don't see why RN would develop their relationship throughout just to toss it out. The show had the beginnings of working a new twist, with W coming back with a new model of detective agency like Pinkerton's.
On the feminist point...I too am not young and believe a woman can be productive, independent, and socially acceptable. Watching a woman continually bucking the system is not entertaining to me either.
Glad you brought up RN's comment about it being a "feminist" show. Does she really think this show had soaring ratings because of this! We know why the ratings took off because of the relationship between the to characters. I am a woman of a certain age and I have had a productive professional career in a 21st century in some fields still a man's world. I get a bit sick though of all the emphasis on feminism. It has been done many times in movies and TV and enough is enough.

I was physically sickened when I heard Stuart's announcement .I can't get the Duke's unrequited love leading him on to a lonely trip into alcoholism in America out of my mind. And Eliza clearly didn't get the thrill she was expecting when she saw her "name above the door", realizing "life's not all about work " especially since she can't share the moment with William...I am in mourning for both, and sadly disappointed in the unfulfilled feeling this series has given me.
Perhaps a final episode where E&W have grown and recognize everything can be accomplished with communication and compromise...a worthwhile message to a world of too much division.
Of course, this would take a 6th season, which may not be possible 😢

I KNEW THIS WAS COMING!! I commented on a different video a few weeks ago and I mentioned how I sensed there was a shift, they distanced Eliza and Duke and put her with Nash more. And I said that this was happening because Stuart Martin was leaving and the writers needed to get chemistry going with Eliza and Nash- and here we have it!! Completely disappointed.
I was annoyed when Duke was absent from some of the episodes of S3 and again in S4, I think that's bad on all forms. Stuart Martin should have prioritised this show or the other projects! So now we are left with limited episodes and no duke.
One fan commented to me on the other video I mentioned telling me that I should stop whining about it because the show is about Eliza (I disagree) the name of the show is Miss Scarlett AND the Duke!.
I've never understood why actors do this when they have a really good thing going. This show would not have gone on for much longer and not only that I've seen the other projects Stuart Martin has been in- they are rubbish. I understand he wants to further his career but this was career suicide. Never again will there be a show like this.
It's such shame as well, I liked this side of Duke where he was open and honest with Eliza, the more serious side. That scene in episode one of season 4 when he tells her she looks beautiful (in his office) that was one of my favourite scenes between them.
I love Nash I think he's great and he'll be a great addition to the show. But I also see what the writers are trying to do here, it's going to be a love triangle no doubt. I'm also disappointed that Moses has gone.. it feels like a totally different show. I really hope that Duke returns by the end of it all because it unfair to us fans who need closure.
And also: if they knew that Stuart Martin was leaving for good then they should've given Eliza and Duke more episodes and romantic

Very, very disappointing. They should have just wrapped the storyline up. I thought Eliza and William should have opened a detective agency togehther. To me, that would have been the perfect solution.
I agree whole hardily. Scarlet, Duke and Mises would make a grand detective agency.

If the Duke is leaving voluntarily then I would say that is a very selfish thing to do. The series is gone for sure and the other actors are out of work for sure. It seems no one wants to watch this without The Duke. With so much competition in tv today with so many channels to watch it’s a miracle that a show stays on for any length of time. Shame on who ever made this decision.
I had my suspicions and I am. not happy to be wrong. I noticed that her Jamaican friend was missing in season 4 and I started looking uop things with the stow. I'm done. I liked the story between them and if this element is not there then I'm not going to continue. I don't need a 19th century Mary Tyler Moore career girl. I want people to find and fall in love and make it work. So disappointed in PBS.

Agreed; Moses is fantastic, how he gets his information(I don’t need to know)his all around affection for Eliza. Her fierce protector.
As for Stuart Martin; I think he was testing his wings last season when William went off on a case. Perhaps thats when Stuart was seriously considering other roles, but couldn’t get out of Scarlet for the few episodes he would miss(as in the previous season)so he chose to walk away.
I’m going to give the show a chance(I love Fitzroy)and see how Eliza reacts to William not returning, I also think season 5 will be the last one for Miss Scarlet
I do not know if I will watch season 5 without the duke. If they just place someone else to do the duke maybe it would be ok . But not having the duke I am not happy.
Yes they should consider getting another actor. It is weird that this doesn't even seem to be an option on the table
Hmmm, that actor would be hard to find (Tall, dark, fit, bearded, witty but brooding, and he must be Scottish!) I love Stuart Martin, but for the sake of a happy ending for all, it just might work 🤔...After all he would be coming back from America with a new perspective...a 2 man....Well, drastic circumstances require drastic measures...😉

Another comment for Stuart Martin. I know an actor's profession is short lived if he's type casted and 4 years out of your prime of life is valuable . But this series could be a plus or a minus on your resume depending on how you treat your fans. "Once a reputation is lost, it's lost forever "(😉 not really, you have many fans) But cherish what you have, treat them well and they will stand by you...Again "life is not all about work "😘
Maybe he wasnt as much a fan of the show as we are. The full amount of time to shoot 6 episodes is 3-4 months? Still have to eat the rest of the year, but I think
he just tanked the show for the other actors.
I had hoped we would see a bit of his life in NYC, what it was like there, maybe some crimes etc even if it became a spinoff with Eliza moving to NYC to be with him. I think that would have been fabulous.
So I will have to rely on fanfic to get my fix but that is going to die too wiithout the show to sustain it.
If it was about money, they should have paid him more. If it was about being able to do other projects, they should have made provisions for that. If it was about the character he played, the writers had the opportunity to explore how these two characters would have to make compromises to be in love and have a life together. That would be interesting. Eliza by herself, sorry folks, another show about a boss girl, even one that takes place in the 1900s isn't all that interesting. BTW, I don't believe the audience wants a new love interest either. What a strange decision.

Not gonna watch the show anymore if the chemistry is not gonna be there. I kmew it when they sent off duke to somewhere else in the middle of the story, that he would never come back in her life. If this bs is gonna continue i am not even interested to see the show. The production team should've thought it earlier when they began the show, if they really wanted to brand their show as a out loud women empowerment gig. Bcs every show uses a plot with platonic or slow burn romance btwn characters, thats what makes a storylime more interesting. Sp if they gonna take the whole catch of the show out then i highly doubt if its gonna do well.
Stuart Martin is such a great actor! I don’t think they realized that when he was cast! For those of us who saw his character develop through the storyline, we loved how he became an intricate part of the show! Unfortunately the decision to write him out of the show left a 2 dimensional show. His character is so strong and loved by the viewers, it will inevitably result in a final 5th season of diminishing interest to the public! So very sad! I loved the show!!

Soo disappointed in this series. No Duke?? Forgetabotit. Series down the drain. “All Creatures Great and Small”did away with Tristen, and almost Mrs. Hall. Most of these characters I don’t know except in these series and it’s these series that people come to love these characters then they leave and sometimes into a black hole not to be heard of again.

Will not watch anymore. The actor playing the Duke will no doubt go into obscurity like many actors that made that same choice.

I must be the exception to the rule. I can see why he'd want to leave, all he really does in the show, is get her out of trouble most of the time, his role has been over shadowed by her role as a PI instead of a joint lead I think and their coming together in their relationship would've always been left to the end of the series, it's a shame we won't get to see that now. But, I'll still watch it, I've always preferred watching her solves crimes with Moses to be honest....But not expecting it to last past season 5, sadly.

I agree on all counts. It could've gone in so many directions! I'm conflicted about watching but should the series be punished because Stuart took a different path? I'll watch and see if they can make it work. Who knows? I didn't like when Mathew was killed off in Downton but....
Me and my friends, 6 of us, watch this show for William and Elizas relationship . We are done with this show now. It was a waste to get so invested in a show. I think they knew all along this couple wouldnt end up together. Never again!

This is very disappointing, and I will not watch the show.
I have no desire to watch this show. I think Stuart Martin was excited about the show in the beginning but writing him out of episodes, throwing him with Arabella was not a way to get Eliza & William to come together.
The last 2 episodes seemed more like a medicore detective show. I thought the duke was gone temporary but if he is gone for good, I may be done with this show

I'm so disappointed, their romance story was just getting good. However, I would really like it if they turned Patrick Nash into a love interest instead. They already have a history built between them and he betters her.
I knew straight off that Miss Scarlett has been written as a modern day (toxic) feminist in the wrong time and that never sit right with me. I don't blame Stuart for leaving as he's been sidelided since sn 3 and Moses simply vanished without an explanation! Why? and the only minority in a time when they exited in Britain! Disappointing indeed.
I hate when writers craft their own personal agendas into their shows and this is a case example.
I was hoping it would be the type of show that inspires women to believe they can have it all,a career and and love. Now shes a one woman show and its vapid. I doubt I'll continue watching.They sunk this ship.

I will continue to watch Miss Scarlet without the Duke. Yes, that’s a disappointing fact, but it’s still been a great series and I will support it. Thank you PBS for programs such as this.

Not true at all. Nash is an opportunist, deceitful and a rogue! William loves and respects Scarlet. If this series has shown anything it is William's changes in thought regarding Scarlet and her commitment to her work and desires.

Miss Scarlet was one of my favorite shows. There are a lot of lady detective shows. The chemistry between the Duke and Miss Scarlet WAS the show. I'm sorry this decision was made, whomever made it. The writers seem to be pushing this new scenario determined lady detective, and Stuart Martin has not made the best choices of acting jobs. Most are not good. I think he's made another bad choice, he was getting a lot of PR. I will be finding other shows to watch and it won't be Jamestown. I'm so sorry but I won't be watching anymore. Kate is not strong enough actress to hold the show.
eu, dou graças a Deus. Nunca gostei dele, machista e sexista. Pra mim, ela e o Patrick formam um casal muito melhor, porque ele a admira pelo o que ela é. Willian, queria uma doméstica, uma mulherzinha, e nunca daria certo o relacionamento deles, porque isso mataria Eliza.
