    Strongly considering buying a used gen8 axe for my first adult rc. I’ve wanted one for a while but never felt comfortable enough financially to spend the money on myself. As I approach 40 years of age, I finally got where I needed to be financially but I’m still frugal. Lol. Found an upgraded used model for about $350 and I am strongly considering making the purchase and maybe dropping another $200 or so on additional upgrades. Any thoughts from some more seasons rc guys?

    I think your videos are great. I find them to be very helpful in getting my REDCAT GEN 8 AXE on the road.
    I was advised by an online hobby shop tech to use the ADVENTURE 4300 11.4 V LiPo battery. When I received it, I became concerned that the 11.4 V might damage the ESC. I sought the advise of a knowledgeable RC guy. He said it would be fine, the ESC can handle 11.1 V?!?! That looks like a contradiction to me! Could you please tell me if it is safe to use this battery?
    I heard on a couple of videos & read in the manual the ESC must be programmed to the type of battery. I can’t imagine how to do that w/out powering up the ESC & if I go ahead & power it up, how do I program it for the LiPo?
    I have been searching on line for a set of nice beadlocks. TREAL has a very nice one, an alum alloy w/ red trim. I love it. They are 1.9” w/ a 12 mm hex. I can’t find the wheel/tire specs in the manual. Will these work?
    One more thing & I will leave you alone for now. Please recommend a great upgrade tire for the REDCAT.
    I hope you don’t mind all these amateur question. This is my second attempt to get this to you. I “discarded” the first attempt by accident I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

    • @ExocagedRC
      @ExocagedRC  Před 3 lety

      Sorry so late on this, that battery is fine, the HV part will go away as soon as its under load so no issues there. There is a simple jumper for NIMH ot LIPO, that info is in the manual. Tires depends on what you're doing with it, the proline Swampers look great and perform great too.

    Fantastic info. What's the benefit of choosing turbo delay, though? What would that help with?

    • @ExocagedRC
      @ExocagedRC  Před 4 lety

      If you really want more speed you can use this to not compromise any downlow startup control and get it, the issue I've had in the past is if you are powering up a hill and that kicks in it can cause unneeded rolls and crashes. If you're bashing around then I'd still add .2 to it and max out the timing, obviously you'll have to watch the heat on both the motor and esc to make sure its within proper ranges.

    I’d love to see a comparison of this vs. a $40 Hobbywing 1080 with a $20 27T Trailmaster Sport 550 (my current setup) $200 vs. $60. I just think it’s a lot of money given how smooth and powerful my current $60 setup is. If I considered the AXE it would be the 550 one so that’s $230. I’ve not seen any real comparisons. Folks say the AXE is smooth and has a lot of control and programmability, but as you know the Trailmaster and HW1080 is smooth too. I’m not putting it down by any means because I’ve not tried the AXE. It just seems expensive for a negligible gain if anything

    Do mess with the LVC if you are running 3S... There is a bug on the latest firmware that will actually run down your 3S battery to below 3.0V per cell on intermediate, Put it on High and keep an eye for your voltages until Hobbywing fixes the firmware. I tested this on 3x AXE systems ranging from v1 to v1.1 ESCs they all do the same thing running the latest firmware. This does not happen on previous firmware versions, 2S LVC is working fine on latest firmware.. If you never run enough to hit LVC on 3S then its not an issue but if you are running a lightweight low capacity 3S LiPO then its a must that you keep an eye for LVC if you are running the latest firmware.
    How does the 3S LVC on the latest firmware is bugged? Usually hobbywing systems will lower your speed at half and shut down after 10s when LVC hits in... On the latest firmware when LVC cut-off happens the vehicle will crawl slower but it wont stop moving it will resume normal running and do it again, It wont stop at all until the pack is depleted as in 3.0V per cell on INTERMEDIATE LVC. When you are crawling this is very VERY hard to notice because you are driving at slow speeds, You wont notice the cut off at all and your LiPO will take the hit. This does not happen on 2S, LVC works correctly.

      skirmich interesting. I need to test that out for sure. Maybe start with a storage charger battery and see how far down it goes.

      @@ExocagedRC For sure, We first noticed this in our crawling group on v1 ESCs after the new Firmware which enabled RPM/Throttle matching this is IIRC firmware 01-00.2.01 (Which was default Firmware for v1.1 ESCs) the older firmware versions for v1 ESCs are not available for v1.1 ESCs so there is no fixing this issue as of now on v1.1 ESCs. On Older ESCs you can roll back to stock v1 firmware for 3S LVC work correctly.
      Firmware 01-00.2.01 ("RPM/Throttle update") Introduced this bug.
      Firmware 01-00.2.02 ("Bug fix update") currently has the same bug 3S LVC cut off is not working correctly on Intermediate LVC Range.
      Again: This issue is not affecting 2S LiPO LVC.. Only 3S LiPO LVC.

    It was cool to see it stall out in footage, I respect Harley but he hates on this system heaps.. I knew it had plenty of feel when set correctly. Everyone is entitled to there opinion, but it's a smooth well priced system. Would be awesome if HW made a 2700kv 540 or somewhere about that range..

      yep and yep he does not like it, I don't think he has driven one himself, just saying his stuff from hearsay. When they first came out they were weak and sluggish but the firmware updates fixed that and I really like them now.
