Gee, it looks totally downhill on my flat map :-) Great fun, loved the journey especially the "kicking my ass every day," joy of pushing the bikes, moose, overall scenery!
Geolyn, Great video, makes me wish I had had a video camera when I did it in 03-04. Amazing to see the little niche support industry that has sprung up. That Lava Mtn road was an a**kicker n Fleecer...Ooo, boy! Your music is very fitting for the video too. Thanks for posting! Now I'm off to check out your other videos!
That ride from Park Lake up and over to Basin is so rough, and slippery in the rain, and it was hard to find the route. Coming down from Fleecer Ridge was pretty bonkers. I read to my buddies, "In 0.4 miles the trail gets steep and rocky". My buddy: "You mean it gets worse?!"
...just stumbled across your vid...great job! I enjoyed the "everyperson" aspect of the journey...self supported, no sponsors, regular person, #anyonecandothis!...well done
Thanks for posting your video. Ive have thought about cycling the great divide bike trail and wondered what the trail actually looked like. Your video was a great help and understanding the challenges I would face. I was wondering what kind of bike tires you used. The two of you ladies are strong and tough. Congratulations to the two of you for taking on the great divide. Wishing you many more years of cycling adventures. Thanks for taking the time to record the video and for sharing.
I am very please to see that also women do such trips unsupported. Loved every minute of your video, if I would know you I would ride with you guys as you passed by some amazing spots.
I rode the GDMBR a few years ago from Banff to Mexico in the late fall. Fall is a great time as the crowds are gone and temperatures are nice for biking. Awesome ride and I highly recommend it. Don't think I would carry a day pack though. I had front and rear panniers which worked well if your not interested in going gonzo on the downhills. I did the Baja Divide a couple years ago and the "roads" are much rougher and sandier. I'll do the TAT next summer and the Western Renagade late the following winter on a fatbike.
Great video! Did we meet? I rode in july-august from south to north. Encountered the same bush fires (and fire camp) along the way. Slept in the Ovando jail also.
A question for you, how did the drop handle bars work for you? Beautiful scenery, surprised to see all the dead trees intermixed with the live ones. We have that here in California. Those dam beetles have spread everywhere.
Hi, Great video! Who makes the Brim that you are wearing ? Can you give me enough imformation so I can order one ? Only thing I can find is DABRIM HELMET SHADE. Thanks, Tom
Do you feel that a mountain bike with at least a suspension for is worth having for the trip or do you think the rigid is adequate ? I have a inner rlt steel but was thinking suspension would be better
It depends on which part of the route, but most of the time they were on roads of some kind. The paved roads would be fine on unsuspended 29x2 semi-slicks, and the washboard roads/trails are easy to handle with unsuspended 29x3" high-volume (but not fat) tires. If your bike has the clearance, get some wide rims and take two sets of tires, or mail the heavier set to yourself (c/o "General Delivery") at a post office near where that kind of riding starts. It sounds goofy, but if you have 100 miles of decent roads but lots of ascending for the day, spending 15 minutes to put on the 2" tires will save 2 hours of sluggish grinding. Changing to 3" tires if you have 50 miles of washboard roads ahead will turn a day of wrist- and bike-breaking hell into a no-big-deal half-day.
I did it on a full suspension mtb towing a BOB in 03-04, the guy at the Whitefish bike shop said a full suspension bike will never make it.... Zero issues! Carried 1 spare tire but was not needed. There is enough offroad/rocky/washboard to justify taking one. IMHO
yeah it depends on the road. For a long trip, where you'll be mostly riding on some type of road (where you don't want your energy for pedaling being wasted), a hard-tail (only front suspension) or no suspension are the best options. Front suspension really will let you have a nicer trip though, as well as being more stable in super crappy roads/trails.
Erica rode a Jamis Renegade with as big a tire as would fit, 45c I think. Geolyn rode a Salsa Vaya with 650b wheels and 2" tires. Tom had a Salsa Fargo w/ 2.25" tires.
What a unique experience. To only say that this is amazing is the greatest understatement. Great Job. I'll watch this over and over.
Amazing journey! Incredible country and even more incredible bikers! Soooo very impressed!!!
Thanks for the video. Fantastic to see !! That is definitely on my list of routes to ride !!!
Those hats that go around your helmets are pretty nifty
Thank you for making this...I can’t wait to do it!
One can only dream during the time I am watching but after the C19 passes I will get on the road.

Thanks! Yeah, we saw a fair amount of people over the age 60. That was pretty inspiring to me.
Great job!
Great video! I saw the Polaroid from the cabin and realized that you're from my home town of Nevada City, CA! Small world!
Pretty neat! Similar to Foresty Forest out of Canada! You guys are to be admired.....you just go out and do it!😀
