Every July, a small group of bikepackers lines up for the backcountry race of a lifetime. This is a film about the Colorado Trail and the people who choose to race it non-stop and self-supported on mountain bikes.
The Colorado Trail Race is a 530-mile ultra-endurance bikepacking race along the Colorado Trail, which stretches from the outskirts of Denver to the small town of Durango. The route is primarily singletrack, with several Wilderness detours that add some dirt roads and pavement. With about 75,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain, much of which is above 10,000 feet, the trail is demanding, taking anywhere from 4 days to 2 weeks for racers to complete.

Please donate to the Colorado Trail Foundation - they do an amazing job of maintaining the trail and enabling these experiences in places we could not otherwise reach. coloradotrail.org/ - Sport
Doing the Silverton to Durango segments this summer, at 57 I am going to take a couple days to do it and enjoy the trail. You guys that finish the entire trail in under 4 days are truly animals and have my respect.
A four hour hike a bike...INSANE. and that's just the midway point, crazy. I want to do that! Colorado Trail Race, awesome.
I've bikepacked the trail twice now. No CTR and it took me 2 weeks the first time and 13 days the second. The first was in a hardtail and the second on a fatty. So much more fun on the fatty. It's still the hardest thing I've ever done but the memory are life changing, that can't be overstated. This is the best video I've seen on the trail from the perspective of the saddle. Nice work guys and thanks for everything CT Foundation!!!
what do you mean fatty? fat bike?
@@suntory0814 - either that or a large erection.
Great film and an incredible adventure, love the commitment of the story, always great to get an insight in to someone elses adventures, I look forward to following more!
Great video Aaron, thanks for producing it. Brings back a lot of great memories. Might be back for this upcoming year (2017) if I am lucky.
Thanks for putting so much time and effort into sharing this adventure with us all.. You are awesome buddy..
Thank you for putting this together and up so we can see it. My boys and I still watch your California Sierra Trail Race video and we all love it as well. Both of these videos are works of art and so inspiring to us. One day I would like the CTR and I to cross paths.
Great video!! You perfectly captured the essence of bikepacking/racing the CT. I finished the trail as a ride in '12 and bailed the CTR in '14 at BV because of knee and achilles pain. I'm doing Tour Divide this year because that's all I'll have time for, but your video is really re-inspiring me to attack it again next year.
I found it funny near the end when Cat Morrison said she finished it and she'll never have to do it again. Funny how after the brain forgets the pain, you keep coming back for more.
This 30 minutes changed my life. You helped me choose adventure over comfort. This is on my bucket list.
Awesome video, thanks for making it. I just did my first long distance across the Czech Republic and am hooked!
There are not many truly inspiring videos out there, but this is one of them - many thanks from Switzerland. I gonna be out there 2022 - HELL YEAH!
very very impressive that you were able to shoot so much quality footage while in the middle of a race. As an adventurer and videographer myself, I have to say that's top notch
You guys are TRUE HERO'S! Very inspiring, indeed!
Awesome film Aaron! really inspiring.
Great vid. I'm sitting at home with a broken foot and now I wanna ride my bike even more now.
Inspiring stuff.
So inspiring, love it
Great story telling. Well done. Inspiring.
Amazing filming and editing. Some parts are so remote. Beautiful.
I just bumped into the awesome video documentary on the CTR video and it was at at a perfect time as I’m recovering from off-season hip surgery. It was a blessing that this video appeared to me as it now re-focused me more than ever to get back at mtb’ing post-recover cycle. Absolutely incredible inspiration. Plus I know a couple folks whom are in the video whether by interview or call in’s.
Choosing adventure over comfort... Perfectly said!!
Always choose adventure over comfort.
woahh! word of the day!
The world needs more people like you my friend.
Nonfuckingsense.
All this racing shit is just self absorbed ass hattery.
I love everything about this!
who thumbs down this video? i am just a backpacker and recreational mountain biker. But this was a awesome video! thank you
This is fantastic.
seriously BIG country! well captured mate , kudos....
Amazing video! Adventure over comfort
AWESOME! GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS! BE SAFE! HAVE FUN! SMILE! OUTSTANDING BEAUTY!
Wow, i like this video a lot! Very impressive and movivating. Greetings from Berlin-Germany.
Absolutely amazing footage and amazing race. Great job.
Yeah but the dude can't even replace and tune a spoke..it's so easy and you should be able to do basic repairs if you go on such a long trip.
But yeah im jealous of Americans, what huge country.
I did in fact fix the spoke, but there were 2 other broken spokes for which I couldn't fix - only brought one emergency spoke. But thank you for your advice, I'll try to learn some basic repair techniques for my next trip! ;)
good response
Love this ! Respect !!
what a great film ill be pushing my bike up those mountains in july
So rad and inspirational!
Incredible film!
I NEED to do this...
This is so awesome.
Inspired thanks for sharing!
Great video!
WOW! I'm going to go ride and hike on that trial. This summer!
Awesome!
Amazing!
Damn, another one for my bucketlist 👍
Very Nice!!! I have done this race and miss it. Will do again.
Terrific, shows just how hard it is.
Nice video looks a cool race,I liked that bike shop where the wheel was fixed super awesome ! 🙂👍🏻
We also drive TMB . Vertical lift above 9500m, distanc about 170 km. we slept in the mountains, sleeping bags.
Not a light but fantastic journey, environment, nature!
Wow well done to you all.
Awesome
Unbelievable that you managed to finally nail the drone footage in a CTR - and grabbed a magical scene on Searle Pass. Really, really impressive stuff Aaron
Did someone say that she completed the course on her single speed???
This is one of the few of these events like this that I would even consider because the trails aren't endless fireroad crap.
Sporting the SIR 9! Would love to do this someday
Amazing! I wish to participate once.
I noticed you were basically by yourself. Were you way ahead of others are far behind or, your strung out like the others? Great video and makes me wished I would have known about it years ago in my younger days. Thanks for a great view of this awesome ride!
Awesome video and the story is useful to all our Life's even if your not a mountain biker you can Gain something from this..
how do you only have 1k subs?! This video is awesome, I'll be checking out the others
I sure could live my life out there on that trail year round live it up a year-round going to town only for supplies and just keep riding back and forth back and forth until death do us part
wow.
thats great and inspired me to be bikepackers
I would like to know who designed and created these single tracks? What a job they did!
Hi guys. I'm from Argentina and planning to ride a couple of days the colorado trail. Anyone can recommend me which is the best part of the trail for biking considering to sleep one night? Thanks in advance and sorry for my english
Hi Aaron
Great movie how can get in touch with you?
Nice!!! Guys, what is the ideal bike for this adventure, full suspension or xc bike?
Thanks for sharing!!
I would love to do this. Wish there was something like this in the Midwest.
It's only 17 hours by vehicle away! Iv'e driven to Leadville the past 3 years to do LT100 --- Next year my goal is this race!
awesome video - can we broadcast on HorizonSports - Nature Sports and LifestyleTV ?
No bike shop in Silverton?
What year was this from? Or is it multiple?
Awesome....I really want to do this...who can i contact??? I am from Costa Rica.
Do you need a map to ride this Trail in this event or is it Trail prominent and foolproof
Jefe!!!
great video. what kind of MTB you recommend for CT ?
The bike you already have will likely work. like Jefe alluded to, be able to repair it. I ran a full rigid Ssp. Sleep dep Super Men ofter go full squish.
Can someone please tell me the name of the trail at the 20:51 mark? I must ride this trails!
Awesome video,, good riding. About the lady there she creeped me out, I want to know how she got there, in that area doesnt appear to be a community , just wondering about that. other than that great video......
That's because there was no lady... Sargents Mesa is known to be haunted with ghosts of Miners and railroad workers. That's why nobody likes to camp there.
nice video, what kind of bikes/tires are used??? fat bike/mtb 26/29???
thanks
Any of those have and will work.
I am thinking of doing this throughout college. any advice or point me to a link of how to pack for something like this?
bikepacking101.com
glad that e-mtb can partecipate!
ombra306 they probably realize that there is no way to charge the huge battery pack once you get out there
Epic...but a bit too painful for my taste.Lol
I want to ask a question. I don't know much about bikes. Why do long distance endurence cyclist use spoke wheels instead of spoke free wheels such as alloy or carbon spoke wheels? Surely they wouln't snap because of metal fatigue.
Mostly cost. Carbon wheels are pricey even with normal spokes.
For a minute there, I felt bad about all the sleeping I did, No hallucinations at all, but plenty of questioning my sanity
Good video - Very annoying music
I admire these guys, but I am curious how they support themselves financially. Is it through sponsorships with outdoors companies or do they have a daytime job?
it only takes them a week or so, they're probably just obsessed mountain bikers with day jobs a penchant for suffering. I live in colorado, and you find a lot of people like that here
We're all just regular Joe's with regular jobs. We just have a passion for Mountain bikes and racing. 1 or 2 weeks of vacation and you're good to go.
тоже хочу такой маршрут пройти
how do they charge their electronics?
dynamo hub
I used a usb portable charging unit. All I had to charge was a Iphone and lights. Dyanamo hubs don't work as well on the Colorado trail because of all of the Hike a Bike and slower speeds.
I think it's courageous....especially since they are using hydraulic brakes and Stan's wheels! Ha!
The musical scoring is too much.
Flew 20 ft all good rub some dirt on it no problem lol!
I wanna do a bike adventure like this too..... with some LSD.
Haha some dude got creeped out by a Mennonite in the woods
Why not race it with a fat tire
Why are they talking like they're asking questions???lol
i push=hike
i get off and push the bike up long hills
is there a niche for me
oh hell no, course not, it's not "macho" enough
stop the music is the first rule :(
U guys are mad. ...lol
kids call it toxic masculinity
we are encouraged to assume we can treat our bodies like sht and still be alive and well at 98+
Question: What is a Nose for???
Learn to breathe.
Use your Nose, that's what it is there for.
Your nose is directly linked to your brain = releases the good drugs.
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
Lol
A staged commercial poser ride. 👎
Great video!
