- Hello All. In this video I try and answer some questions about riding the GDMBR that have commonly popped up in the comments over the last couple of months, including reflecting on the decisions I made prior to setting off on my trip, what I might change if I did it again, and how much it all cost me.
I find it a bit uncomfortable making a video like this. As anyone who has watched a few of my videos should know, I do not consider myself any sort of authority to give advice on bikepacking. I am new to this, and the GDMBR is really the only proper extended bikepacking trip I have done. However, I thought it was an important video to do, as if nothing else I hope it gets across that if an inexperienced, moderately fit 50-year-old like myself can take on something like this and complete it, then most people can.
This is the second in what I plan to be three post GDMBR videos, with the last being a live stream Q&A that I will be doing at 19:00 BST on Friday 22nd September. Anyone with any questions about the ride, or anything semi-relevant, please feel free to drop in and ask it, or if you cannot make it then leave your question as a comment at the bottom of this video, and I will answer it in the livestream next Friday. It is the first live stream I have done, but I think I should be able to upload the video for anyone to watch after the event.

Mat - thank you so much for such an excellent series of films on the GDMBR. I've watched every one and even my wife has been asking 'is there another film from Mat?!' Always entertaining and informative, but what makes them so special is your complete honesty, positivity and dry sense of humour. I've completed a few long distance tours in the States and the Great Divide has long been on my wish list. Your experience has only cemented my desire to ride it. I finally came across your GDMBR video. It was terrific. Enjoyed every minute of it. I was a bike racer for a number of years and now that I'm older and slower moved towards a little more gravel and mt. bike riding along with my road riding. I've been thinking about some bike packing but have not done any yet. after watching your video it is high on my list of things to do. also with my retirement from work coming up in a few years maybe a GDMBR ride is in my future. Your ride inspired me to try it if I get the chance. Thank you.

The video series was so helpful and inspiring to me. I've been getting back into cycling now that I'm retired and you reminded me that bikepacking is the most rewarding for me (versus mountain and road cycling). Looking forward to the livestream.

A Good amount of information from an older rider. To be honest, I didn't know if I would make it through your video but by golly, it was to the bone honest. This is what I think we all need to hear. I myself just recently retired at 67 and so close to 68. Had a small bout with that flu thing last winter that was just enough to put me back on track with my concerns for personal health. A fairly avid cyclist, now becoming a daily walker and sights set on rucking and trail running. So many avenues to choose from yet one thing is for sure, if one is not enjoying the outdoors on their own terms then one is not truly living. Just recently purchased a gravel bike as my old roadie was getting tired and thought, I'd like to do some off road riding more so than dealing with any amount of vehicles on the roads. This is leading down a rabbit hole, I hope, to have a greater respect for myself and the outdoors, once again. Born and raised in SE Alaska, always outside. I have been an athlete all my life, at least thought I was until now. It seems as we age all of those yesterday/years ambitions come full circle and we are left with what our bodies are actually capable of......Found truth as though looking into a mirror. Finding courage, foresight and fortitude will be the challenge. Growth through these endeavors while meeting and enjoying all of the folks along the way I will say would be the icing on the cake. It's not the challenge, it is of the journey. ....Thank you for taking the time to put things in one man's perspective that I am sure will give us all some food for thought. Much appreciated sir.
I agree completely with your point about enjoying the outdoors on your own terms. I enjoy hiking, cycling and would love to try trail running at some point. I hope the gravel bike works out for you. I imagine Alaska has some pretty impressive trails to explore. Maybe one day I'll visit. In fact, I will definitely see Alaska at some point. I think michaellane that we have to be attuned to what our bodies are actually capable of at any age. The difference, at our age (I'm also 67 ) is that it gets harder, i think, to distinguish between what are the actual physical limitations of our ageing bodies and the psychological limits we (and others) impose on bodies of our antiquity. I recently rode 3000 plus KMs to Alice Springs from South East Australia. More than 2000km of this was on very gnarly gravel, sandy or stony arid zone tracks. The key to completing this excursion (for me at least) was recognising when i needed to take a day or two(or three) out of the saddle to rest this aging body. And although i spent 46 nights in a tent, being able to rest my fossilising bones on a an ultralight air mat and sitting around my campfire on an ultralight chair made all the difference.
I love this comment for many reasons, mainly as it's reassuring to know that with the right mindset, and being aware of our limitations we can keep going and stay active. At 50 I'm reassured that I'm young and have plenty of time left. 👍 thanks.

Mat, this is a very truthful honest video, I'm glad I had the time to watched. the best part is when you mention " is a privilege to do what you love to do" and you are 100% absolutely correct, for years I try to do something like that, unfortunate my line of work and were i work, time is a huge issue. I'm 65 now I wont give up my dream to do something like that, Ill will start AZ loop which is about 130+- miles. I thank you for your video it was very good, and I had no idea about the expenses, but like you said something's we can make changes and adjust, research and take the time to get it down pack.
but the most important part is to enjoy while you can and healthy enough to do it. Life is short. we all know that. Thank you.

I live in the Teton Valley and I can totally relate to your respect for grizzlies! We carry bear spray everywhere! Never underestimate how ornery a moose can be either!

Hi Matt, yes the expences for the tour was a little high, the airline tikets are high when not booked in advance. But overall the experience and comradary with friends is a lifetime memory and the good feelings you had from the trip and the scenery is the highest enjoyment isn't it? I am sure in future trips you have a good idea how to make it more affordable and still have a great experience. One definite good point is time, when you have the time to do all of this is a win win situation. We all live once and why not enjoying life to the fullest? The airline ticket for the return journey was very high. I should have booked earlier. I will next time. You're right, you can't put a price on experiences like these. Cool you mentioned the Surly Bridge Club. I bought one a couple months ago. Great bike. I also have a 2017 Surly Ogre. I've only put 300 miles on it,on purpose. I have it stored inside. Saving it for a big trip. Retirement is in another month. 🚵♂️👍

I've really enjoyed watching all your videos on the GDMBR. I originally found you when searching for info in the Sonder Broken Road, and then I got hooked on your videos of the wider trip. That says alot! (Although I bought a Brother Big Bro instead of a Broken Road 🙂) You're videos have been a welcome change from so many other 'trail vidoes' that leave you feeling like someone's been trying to school you for 30 minutes. Awesome bike. John loved his. He had the 29" wheels. I like the 27.5" ones because of the huge amount of clearance you get, essential in the mud. You'll love it. I also liked the method for tensioning the belt. It was definitely easier to do than on my bike. Cheers 👍
In 2005 I bike-toured in the US for 50 days solo and another 25 with someone else. We spent a little over 10$ each per day on camping, food and miscellaneous. With modern prices that would still be less than 20$. But as you said, we had four panniers each and I only had to resuply once at a gas station. We were also young and camped out every night and had more free sites than paid ones. I also seemed to be broke so people sent a lot of trail magic, probably worth a couple of hundred dollars. I remember going through Utah, where I had to resuply at a gas station, buying the bare minimum to get me through to the next supermarket two days down the road. On the way to my designated camp spot a car stopped, handed me drinks and fruits and told me that they managed to get the last available campsite and invited me to stay with them and to eat with them, so I was able to add a well needed rest day without buying food, which would have been impossible anyway or paying for camping.
When I will one day do the GDMBR and hopefully connecting to the Baya Divide I would probably be spending 50$ or more per day.
Insurance, bikes, flights all add up to those costs.
I definitely spent too much. I like the $50 per day target. I think that is achievable for me in future too. It's amazing how kind people are on these trails. Your Utah story says it all, those experiences are the ones which stay with you. I hope you make it onto the GDMBR. The Baja Divide is definitely on my list too. Cheers 👍

Hey Mat, Re "Timing". The racers start the second week of June. I live in the mountain west, and feel June is early for a few reasons. Remaining snowpack in the high country; melting snowpack makes trails muddy; deeper creeks and runoff; plus the Forest Service and locals haven't had time to clear fallen trees from winter. Mid-July is a good time to start the Divide because you're farther north in Canada, temps are ok at night, plus you start off at altitude right away. Thanks again for your personal observations and humor. I rode half of the Divide, and went too lightweight for the areas south of Breckinridge, CO. Next attempt: small panniers and front/rear racks, full rigid drop-bar mountain bike, ability to carry more water and food. Happy trails!
I can't imagine how hard it is to race this route, especially so early in the year. I was very lucky with the weather even though I set off a little earlier than you recommend. I've added a front rack and bought some small front panniers so aside from the drop bars I'll be similar to your planned set up. I hope you get back out there soon. Great video! I would have chosen a 4" front suspension fork with a lock out. Your commentary on the cost is much appreciated! The Gates Pinion drive is a no brainer. Great job on your Great Divide Mtn biking trip.

Mat, you're my role model: your approach on life - how you tackle problems, general calm demeanor, matter-of-fact, and sense of humor are refreshing. I enjoyed your documentary style approach to the GDMBR series. Not only are your videos authentic, but the videos are good quality and well-edited. They are inspiring. For your upcoming livestream - Would you consider leading a bike tour with less experienced cyclists? How do you balance work and life for a trip like this, for me at my stage in life, this would mean doing the trip in sections.
Thanks for the kind words. I never know how to respond to such lovely comments so I'll just say thanks. I'll add your question to the list for the livestream. I'll think about your question. The strange thing is that I have approximately 2 months bikepacking experience so consider myself firmly in the novice category. My experience is highly condensed...Cheers 👍.
Adding more context, my biggest fears are thunderstorms and bears. What were the scariest moments when on the GDMBR or hiking? I have been caught out in a lightning storm before and car camped through lightning storms. Both were scary as you could get struck or hit with a downed branch. I focus on minimizing risk, but still admit I am scared when in that situation. Perhaps all I need to do is relax and admit that the situation is scary and I have done what I can do to minimize those risks, the rest it outside of my control. Did you take an SOS device (Garmin in reach / Spot)?
I forgot about the storms!! Yes, they are scary, particularly when you're exposed. There are quite a few sections of the route where there is nowhere to hide from storms and that was quite a stressful experience. I did the same as you and minimised teh risks. I took a Garmin Inreach. You probably know but it's the same sort of thing a Spot.

Thanks for all the information it's really helpful . I ended up buying a Salsa Fargo (being assembled at my local REI) and planning a two night trip in Tahoe . Got to work my way up to the GDMBR .

I think an option to consider is buy a bike in the states, should be cheaper compared to here and bring it back. I’m considering that in the future.

@Mat I really enjoyed your trip video. It was brilliant, mate. I loved your effusive sense of gratitude and appreciation first and foremost. Your self-awareness and self-criticism about your tendency to rush and push too hard was an enlightening share, and tbh I have found myself thinking about that specific trip as needing 100 mile days because I saw others doing that. But your trip looked FAR more enjoyable!
I also loved that you made friends along the way and included the merry band of nutters in your video!

I'm 58 y.o. now and so time is running our for me.

Thoroughly enjoyed all episodes of your GDMBR adventure Mat & appreciate your terrrific sense of humor & adventurous spirit! Kudo's on the awesome & entertaining job you've done through-out! So glad you met the other fellows along the way and enjoyed the wonderful camaraderie, friendships, & all the terrific memories as well. My biggest concern would be being on my own for 2,700 miles! I'm a retired 65 year old cyclist from Cary, NC who's been battling some hip ailments the past few years. May be getting a hip replacement in the not too distant future & hope that gets me back to the 10k miles I rode in 2019! I typically cycle about 5k - 6k miles a year but some home renovation projects have kept me quite a bit busier than I prefer this year. Thank you for this helpful video covering the trip costs and the analysis of what gear changes you're considering moving forward. I suspected you might benefit from a couple front panniers or fork packs as well so I was right about that part. That sporty black & white print shirt seemed to hold up quite well for you as well. Hey, being a chick magnet is never a bad thing at any age! Great job & keep on keeping on my friend!

Matt, - thank you so, so much for sharing your inspiring story. You brought an "experiential nuance" to your videos that I have seldom seen in this type of video. You were just being honest about what you were feeling and thinking instead of putting on some sort of false front. You approached the project with gratitude and a beginners mind, and I appreciate that. Am I reading too much into your story from my experiences in the long remote trips that I have done, or was that your intent? Sometimes travel is boring, tedious and unnerving, but that is balanced with unexpected pleasures and surprises if you can pause and experience them. I am now thinking the GDMBR will be in my future. From a long list of questions, I have selected just a few. Were there any times that you were concerned for your safety? (Other than camping in grizzly bears back yards.) Rural 'merica IS the land of ever bigger pickup trucks and motor homes after all, sometimes driven by folks who are "annoyed" seeing cyclists. My experience is mostly in wilderness areas of north America (CDT, PCT) and way off the beaten path in Nepal, so motor traffic does concern me. And what was or were the most unexpected thing(s) that you experienced?

Loved the series. In your last episode, "What I learned completing The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR)" you talked about the fear of Grizzly bears influencing your camping decisions. Beginning in Banff, were there other riders around that you rode or camped with so that you could ride with a group, at least temporarily?
I would have loved to have your riding mates play a bigger role in your episodes. It wasn't until the end that we learned that John was from Ottawa and Bill from West Virginia (and I think Paolo was Italian). How much of an impact did they have on your enjoyment of your ride? Did you have some negative experiences with other riders that you kept your distance from on the GDMBR?
Did your metal water bottles have a thermal liner to keep them cold? What brand were they or what brand to you recommend?
Water seemed like a big thing from Wyoming south. What was the maximum amount of water you carried on any section?

@matryderadventures a little. I've ridden in that area, including the KVR, but haven't done the whole thing from Fernie to Merritt or even out to Vancouver (or the other direction). It's on my list.

I'm running a Marin 4Corners myself. When I take off next spring I'm going four panniers mostly so I can have more room for food and also want to bring my tent AND my hammock setup, both are ultralight, so weights not an issue and being able to use my hammock when possible, will be great. I think having my hammock tarp for when its pouring to setup a tent in will be nice too. I have a $3600/month budget, I'm going to try to keep it under $2000/month to save up some money with the lower the better. I'll say it again, I really enjoyed your series on the trip, was such great footage and as I learned from another comment, Ross did a great editing job on it. I can't wait to see what your next adventure entails. (hope some of the youtube monies helped pay for a bit of the trip)
It sounds like you're planning to do it in almost exactly the same way that I would if I did it again. I've fitted a front rack and ordered 2 X 5 litre panniers for the front. I will definitely be taking a tarp from now on but am not sure about the hammock. I think $2K per month is definitely achievable. Thanks for the support. Ross does a great job. last year I rode the GDMBR but started in Deadhorse Alaska, used 80 days $31 avarage (did around 30% wildcamp 50% cheap campground and 20% expensive campground with showers/washing machines for some comfort and cleaning.
95% I cooked myself what reduces the cost a lot and because I had to be able to take 7 days of food because of Alaska I was able to buy cheap supplys ad the large suppermarkets. but then it made my bike bit heavy
Next summer gona do from Vancover to baja divide and mexico divide on my way down south :)

@@matryderadventures I enjoy biking but could never find a comfortable seat for long hauls. I tried to season myself and have tried I am sure a million seats, no success. I did a two night, three day trip years back and thought I would never walk again! haha! Now for a question: If you had to choose one, would it be belt or chain?

Unfortunately we don't have a good network of tracks and paths for cycling. Most of it is to be done on roads and highways. I envy the Euro Velo. I am looking at cycling along the Danube later this year. If you make it to Australia let me know as I am happy to host in Brisbane

One of the reasons to do it in July/August is that at altitude, there can still be snow before then. After then, a lot of seasonal support evaporates. The Sierra Nevada is more susceptible than the GDMBR, but lots of bus services there shut down after Labor Day.

The verb "spend" is applicable to mainly two things, money and time. The dollar cost of the GDMBR is fairly trivial, whereas the cost in time borders on astronomical. For those of us who aren't retired, can't take a paid sabbatical, or aren't unemployed drifters, time is the most costly issue. And the problem to solve is how to find the time. For myself, with work, kids, pets, and the like, the time requirement is beyond my budget. So, I'm working on riding sections, something which can be done in 10 days or so, which is the most time I can afford.
If you ever make it out to Japan, look me up. There's some pretty good riding here, the food and beer are excellent.
Very true. Time off work definitely needs to be factored in. I've kept my life as simple as possible (no house, no kids etc.). It's the only way I could manage trips like this. I'll probably pay the price one day but that's fine. I'll definitely be in touch if I make it to Japan. Cheers.

My question for your livestream…I have tons of riding experience, but very little in the rain. What did you wear and how effective was it? Not sure where the discrepancies are (haven't done a break down on my costs), but my total cost was $4,300. I was traveling with a friend the first half, so there was some shared lodging costs. That also doesn't include the air fare. Coming from Colorado, my flight to Calgary was only $250. My sister picked me up in New Mexico, so only gas etc. there. I finished the ride in 60 days.
As for the comment on tires, some people do finish on one set of tires, I think that is pushing it. I replaced tires about half way through. The front tire completely failed in the Basin, forming a large bubble, because the internal fibers had failed. Other than that, I replaced brake pads and brake rotors once. I replaced the chain twice. That was in part from getting a not very compatible chain at a shop in Butte, MT.
$4300 is very good. I think I could have reduced mine to 5K but without flights. Flights and transfers all add up. I agree with you about the tyres. I should have made it clear that tyres can and do fail. I saw a few. A failure in the basin is bad luck. I heard a lot of Maxxis tyres have this delaminating problem. I replaced mine a bit prematurely but wanted to make sure I was in good shape for New Mexico. Cheers 👍

Your estimated cost of eating out just astounds me. I went on a 3000 km tour with 2 friends and maybe spent $400 over 5 weeks for “eating out”. We shared prepared meals often when camping. The cost of campsites is which surprised me at about $30-50/tent, some limited one tent/site which was ridiculous considering the size of a 1 person tent vs a family of 5-6.
The distance covered/day started out high but later reduced due to extreme temperatures and fatigue. I’ve since learned to cycle a “comfortable “ pace not like it’s a race.
When you cycle with some who train on road bikes, unloaded then switch to touring bike with 25-28kg of added weight they misjudged the physical effort required.
The GDMBR is something I’ve recently thought of as a tour. I’m a little confused on trails/routes people say they follow. Many show single track dirt paths while others used 90% paved back roads.
Hi. I went seriously over the top with food. I could have spent a lot less. Sharing prepared meals makes a lot of sense when you can. Campsites were fairly cheap on the GDMBR and you don't really need to stay on them at all for most of the route. There is often public land to camp on. I followed the route from the ACA. They have downloadable or printed maps. The GDMBR is very well defined by them. They also suggest lots of alternatives which is why it seems a little confusing. I stuck to the main route except for around 20 miles for a fire closure. I hope you make it out there. It's an incredible route. Cheers 👍

Quick question, if you were to factor in the expenses for your bikepacking gear, how much on average would you guess that to be? Hi. I would guess at around 7-8k sterling including the bike. I dare not figure it out properly. It would scare me. You seriously don't need to spend that much though. I went a little overboard 😬. I used the Inreach Messenger and would highly recommend getting one. It was reassuring to have the SOS facility and it actually came in handy keeping in touch with others on the trail. Additionally, the tracking facility kept everyone at home happy as they always knew where I was. Cheers 👍

Questions for live stream: how difficult to get a campground spot? where was paved road traffic the worst? did you or when to lock your bike? any suggestions for gloves; my hands get cold easily? how big of a tarp would be sufficient to keep out of the rain? did your hands ever go numb? what kind of shoes did you wear? ever a problem getting chased by dogs?

I never include what you call resupply in to the cost of any trip I do. Whether I am sitting at home watching too much CZcams or travelling I still will be eating enough food to at least keep me alive. Definitely do not eat out as much as you did but it sure is a sweet treat every now and then. Best burritos I had on the route were in Helena.
I've never thought of it that way. You're right though. You have to eat anyway. I definitely won't be eating out that much in future. I spent way too much. I can't remember where I ate in Helena. It cost me more to fly home from Japan than a round trip there because I bought my ticket 3 days before I was leaving. Learned my lesson on that one.
I can be terrible at sticking to it but $30 a day is plenty to budget for a bicycle tour. Wild camp and don't eat out much. In Japan I went hog wild and was spending hundreds a day on hotels and restaurants but I wanted to experience Japan, if I did the route you did I wouldn't have spent much at all. When I rode across eastern Canada I was under budget.
I agree completely. I'll be approaching the TransAm with a much tighter budget. $30 per day sounds achievable.

That was a worry for me too. Thankfully I only had positive encounters with bears but I'll confess I felt a huge amount of relief once out of Grizzly country. It's still worth the risk in my opinion. Thanks for watching 👍
It's not free, that's for sure. I haven't started my bikepacking career yet, although I plan to at some point, but with the GDMR as my big carrot this video is really great for costwise insight. Not $8k and certainly not $2k, but somewhere comfortably in between I guess. Hopefully. In the mean time I'm going to have to start off over here in Norway. Thanks. I'm glad I went with the solid fork. The washboard roads were the only problem, and there wasn't really that much. I am seriously considering trying a suspension stem. It could be the perfect solution or it could be a huge gimmick. I'm not sure.

This must all be invaluable for anyone looking to do the route themselves. A question for the livestream - how much did you think about grizzlies? I remember you mentioned them in some of your preparation videos, and that you had a sighting or two on the ride, but I just wondered how much their presence affected you.
Hi. I was always thinking about them until Pinedale where you leave Grizzly country. I'm sure I would have wild camped more if they weren't around. Hope to make your live stream on Friday. How much does your bike and gear weigh? suggestion for a bike trip this winter is to go to Florida this January or February and do the Huracan300. It is a 330 mile bike packing loop in central Florida. I have a video on it on my channel. If you want to do more than one week you can add the 290 mile Tally Tango Extended which you can find on PedalPower Adventures channel. Florida is a nice spot to bike in the winter.

I hiked the 700 mile pilgrimage in Shikoku Japan and it cost 8k, the biggest cost was paying rent back home while I was away. :(
