  • 4-month ownership review of my Kawasaki Ninja 400 KRT (MY2018). I go through the build quality, the ergonomics, the extras I've bought, the acceleration and braking, the quality of the suspension and the tires, how it works as a commuter and how comfortable it is on bad roads, plus some considerations on cost of ownership and on the real need for more powerful bikes. Shot in Lisbon.
    *The adjustable levers are from Puig, not R&G.

    Great review, always nice to hear from other riders who've got one long term. Definitely best in the KRT colours if you ask me, and those lights are great a night. I've still got to get the adjustable levers, and an exhaust, it sounds decent when you did those speed runs, but for around town it's too quiet. Some great scenery there too, cool to see other parts of the world from a motorcyclists view. People would go crazy if we filtered like that here, our car drivers are a lot less aware.

    • @motozest7856
      @motozest7856  Před 5 lety +1

      It is a bit quiet around town, but I couldn't justify the price of an Akrapovic, an Arrow, an SC Project or a Leo Vince (brands I trust), and around here we need them to be Euro 4 legal... Filtering is definitely an art.

    nice review..I recently had my one year plate inspection and forgot you had to put the bike on for headlights.. the guy said I think you have a bulb out.. I was like..what the.... then it dawned on me.. lol.. I would buy the 400 krt again.. it has "enough" power.. light and nimble.. I wouldn't ride it across country nor was it a consideration when I purchased it... but its a good bike for what it is, at this price point. tail tidy was a must and after market slip-on exhaust... that about does it.. enjoy your ride..

    • @motozest7856
      @motozest7856  Před 5 lety

      Absolutely. Perfect city commuter, obviously not the best for big trips. The tail tidy does wonders and I think the adjustable levers were also a very good investment. I'm not a fan of slip-on exhausts, though, especially on small displacement bikes - they sound a bit ridiculous to me, a bit like a Dachshund barking like he's a Rottweiler!

    Hi. I need to ask you a favor. I Have the z400 and a few hundred km ago i noticed a noise and i am not sure it was there from beginning or it just came later. It is a klikk (like an electric relay when it turns on and off) and it is when i close the gas and when i open it. It is not loud and frightening and the bike is like it was before but it is a defenately there. And i do not know it was there and i just did not totice. Would you please chack your ninja400 if it gives the same klikk? The best where you can hear it is in 3th gear around 3000rpm ( where is not too much wind nois and engine noises) and just open the gas a little bit and close it, open it close it and every time when you do that it klikks. It is 100% noise from an electric something -i guess the fuel injector. What else- sound like a small micro switch when you push it. Small klikk. Please help me to find out it is normal or it is someting that need to be chacked. Thank You

    • @motozest7856
      @motozest7856  Před 5 lety +1

      Checked, can't hear anything... If you don't have a Kawasaki dealer near you (visiting one would always be preferable) pop in to any motorcycle garage and see what they think. If they can't be sure it's normal, or if in fact it isn't, they'll likely send you to a Kawasaki dealer, considering it's still under warranty. I wouldn't do anything on my bike if it's still under warranty - let the manufacturer take care of it. Cheers.

    • @motozest7856

      It does OK as long as the total weight doesn't exceed 260-270lbs, the shock's adjustable for preload. Of course you won't be accelerating like this and the fuel consumption increases. The brakes do OK. These smaller bikes are not exactly the best for two-up, though.

      Hi Ban! I did consider the R3 at the time, I actually test rode it, but the GoPro battery died during the test ride, so I was left with no footage😤. I think the R3 is a great little bike, the looks are spot on and it has a great geometry and quality components overall. I went with the Ninja 400 because of its bigger engine (the torque difference was very noticeable: 28.8Nm@9000rpm for the R3 and 38Nm@8000rpm for the Ninja 400); for me the R3 was just a bit too slow. Also, Kawasaki has a warranty extension program here in Portugal of up to 4 years, and Yamaha only offers 2, so it was a no-brainer, really. An aftermarket exhaust is always a possibility, but I don't think it makes a lot of sense for bikes in this segment - a good exhaust (Akrapovic, SC-Project, Termignoni, Arrow...) will easily be around 15% of the bike's overall cost, which I think is a bit ridiculous. It makes them sound sweet, though.

      Se andares sempre sozinho, esta é mais leve, mais ágil, tem uma suspensão ligeiramente melhor e, pessoalmente, um look mais bem conseguido e uma posição de condução mais envolvente (desportiva sem nunca ser desconfortável). Se andares com pendura a MT-07 serve-te melhor - esta Ninja não é a melhor escolha para quem anda a dois. Se tens pouca experiência a Ninja também te permite mais excessos em segurança do que a MT (dado o menor binário e a aceleração menos nervosa).

      Yes, I would. It has enough power for highways, it has pretty good wind protection and it's frugal. The only reason why you should look at more powerful bikes is if you're carying over 100kg or so (pillion, heavy luggage, etc). Great review. You say, as others do, it's great for commuting. But does nobody ever have to carry stuff to their place of work, eg a laptop ,your lunch and a lock to lock your bike? Surely if you're commuting to work that side of things has to be addressed..eg the luggage options? It can't be just me who has to carry various shit to work.

    • @motozest7856

      Good point, Simon. I usually carry my Ogio backpack - it fits my MbP and my iPhone, my chargers, my regular pants, one or two magazines and a small bottle of water. If you usually carry more than that and you're bent on riding a motorcycle you should probably be looking at a touring bike. Motorcycles are always a compromise, you'll never find one that's perfect in all areas. Of course you can always buy one of those weird looking universal top-cases, but they're offensively ugly - when I need to lug around that much stuff I simply take my car.

      @@motozest7856 A top box really is a no no for me too. I could possibly stretch to some stylish rear soft panniers. On the way home from work you may want to buy a few groceries and that would be the other bonus to some storage...anyway, great review, Cheers.

      You won't overheat if you cruise up to 1000rpm or so below the redline. Use a good engine oil with the correct spec, change both the oil and the engine coolant according to your owner's manual and keep the radiator in good condition (clean from dirt and road debris).

      Without some context that question is impossible to answer.
      Is that a known problem with the Ninja 400? No, it's not. This is a Kawasaki - engines don't blow up like that.
      Have I ever read something about Ninja 400 engines blowing up? No, I never have, and I've read A LOT about the Ninja 400.
      Do I know any Ninja 400 owner whose engine blew up? No, I don't.
      Can you blow up a Ninja 400 engine? If you rev it like a lunatic, or you run it without oil or coolant, sure - but then again you can blow up any engine on any bike.
      I have no idea what you heard or read about Kawasaki or Suzuki engines but these brands are amongst the most reliable in the market (periodic surveys attest that). If someone manages to blow up an engine on a new Japanese bike the problem is likely that person, not the bike.
