Pink Floyd is legitimately one of the greatest rock bands of all time and are a genre all to themselves. All of their songs are different but there's Pink Floydness to them all. I very much hope you continue to listen to their music. Also, don't shy away from the long songs. Echoes is a 23 minute long masterpiece. I'm very excited to see where you go with Pink Floyd from here.

You're right, David Gilmour's voice is heavenly. One thing I like about it that I just realized, consciously anyway, is he doesn't use vibrato. And don't worry about not being able to put words to the feelings Pink Floyd inspires. We PF lovers get it, no words necessary.

This is my absolute favorite Pink Floyd song! This song was very cathartic for me before I learned how to ground and cleanse. I used to absorb so much energy (negative and positive) that I would reach a state where I would just completely "shut down" and then I heard this song and it described how I felt when I was in that shut down mode. After that I'd just put it on repeat until I felt like me again and got all the other energies out. Thanks for this reaction ❤

  • @lananiella
    @lananiella Před 8 měsíci +41

You are standing atop a VERY big iceberg. You have no idea how big. Pink Floyd is one of the greatest groups of all time. I was in high school when this came out & it has been my favorite song and guitar solos of all time ever since, as well as many other people's. As someone else mentioned, the guitar solos on this song have been voted best ever in a number of lists. That with the magnificent vocals & the overwhelming staging, lighting and the opening mirror ball make for what is a musical experience that is about as good as it gets.
Here's the good news. There's a LOT more where that came from! Floyd has SO many epic songs. You started a memorable journey today. We cannot wait to walk with you on it.
I don't know if you are considering getting a Twitch stream going, but if you do, you would not hurt anyone's feelings of you livestreamed your first walk through "Dark Side of the Moon", especially on the year of it's 50th anniversary. Or if you're feeling really brave, do the entire remastered "Pulse" live DVD where they perform all of DSotM & many others. Floyd is one of those groups that is best experienced live for sure.
In the meantime, it is hard to pare this down to a list of just a few songs, but my top 5 might be (besides this, of course) 1. Time / Great Gig in the Sky (should be listened to at the same time. They go together) 2. Run Like Hell 3) Shine On You Crazy Diamond 4) I can't pick ONE song from "Animals". It's really one BIG song! If I had to ... "Dogs"? 5) "On the Turning Away".
Man, that was hard to pick only 5! There are so many exceptional songs.
Keep in mind that Floyd's pre-DSotM years were very weird experimental psychedelic songs that had some gems (especially "Echoes"), but nothing like everything from DSotM on (excepting "The Final Cut" album. ugh.) A lot of Floyd purists will try to tell you "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" & "The Division Bell" albums are not as good because Roger Waters was not part of the group then. Believe me, don't believe them.
Aaaaand I've gone super long again. Sigh. Sorry. You know how passionate I am about great music. This IS the short version! Lol!
As always, perfect reaction to the perfect song. There is no better reaction than a full minute of stunned silence to this once in a lifetime first time experience. Beautiful. Hugs & thank you. ))

Well said lana! I'll add that the first PF album was Piper At The Gates of Dawn released in 1967 the same year as Beatles Sgt. Pepper. A very different sounding PF then with founding member Syd Barrett who after the one album began to suffer from sever mental illness and was 'backed up' by and eventually replaced by guitarist David Gilmour. Other gems from the earlier years are the tracks 'One Of These Days', 'Fearless' and 'Echoes' all from the album MEDDLE, 'The Gold It's In The...' from the album OBSCURED BY CLOUDS....and of course the concert film Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii which is the band setting up their full PA system in the center of an ancient amphitheater there and jamming a full set of material at max volume to a film crew only...and the echoes of the ancient city. czcams.com/video/CHOza45c57w/video.html

From their studio albums, "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", "Wish You Were Here", "Dogs", "Sheep". People will recommend that you listen to "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" from start to finish as they are concept albums but as far as individual tracks, "Time", "Money" "Great Gig in the Sky" and "Us and Them" from Dark Side. "Hey You", "Goodbye Blue Sky", "Mother", and "Another Brick in the Wall" from The Wall. And yeah, there's about fifty other songs that I didn't mention that are worth a listen as well but this should get ya started :D "Dogs of War" live from the Delicate Sound of Thunder tour is a particular favorite of mine that no one else ever seems to mention.

Your stunned silence at the end reminds me of what attendees at these concerts remember when they left the stadium afterwards - a completely unique phenomenon: tens of thousands of silent, emotionally stunned music lovers, almost unable to process what had just happened to them over the last 3+ hours, looking at the world with new eyes, and emptied of every trivial concern they’d carried in. They had been utterly transported and transformed.

I'll always remember the first time I heard Pink Floyd. I was about 12 or 13, at a friends house and his Dad had just got some high end sound system and wanted to show it off. So he put on the track "Time". He got us to sit in the center of the room so we were in the optimal position to get the full stereo effect. It was amazing, he had it turned up to 11 and it was crystal clear. It blew my mind! Every time I hear Pink Floyd it takes me back to that day - some 30+ years ago...

New subscriber here - great choice! Pink Floyd has been my favorite band for over 50 years. Gilmour is considered one of the best guitarists of all time, probably #1 for conveying emotion, which often overshadows his amazing vocals - he has a very distinctive singing style, where he trails off at the last note of the line, without sounding sloppy. You've opened up a huge can of worms, hope you react to more.

Sometimes we're just not ready for certain bands or songs until we're actually ready. I've listened to certain bands or songs and said "not a fan" and then came back to it a few years later and said "what was I thinking? This is awesome".
I got to see this show at the Silverdome in Pontiac MI. The most amazing spectacle I've ever witnessed. I was 15th row from the stage on the main floor. You could feel the heat from the flame jets as intensely as if you were standing right next to them. The lasers were right over our heads and felt like if you jumped as high as you could then you could almost touch them. There were speakers all around the stadium and the sound was hitting you from every angle. And that disco ball made you feel as if you were part of the light show.
As for this song itself, it is from the album The Wall, which was made into the very same movie you spoke of. It was written, and mostly sang, by Roger Waters, their original bass player who left the band in the early 80s. Taken out of context, its an eerie, yet beautiful, song with one of the best guitar solos ever recorded. But in context of the album, which is a concept album, it's much more heartbreaking. It shows how our life experiences as children can shape, or break, us as adults.
If you want to check out another song from this same show, then I highly recommend Run Like Hell. It's the finale that follows Comfortably Numb and shows everything that that stage set was capable of. But I would also recommend the album version of the song Time, from Dark Side of the Moon, for the second best guitar solo ever recorded. It also has a message that hits that much harder as we get older. Keep up the great reactions, my friend, and your growing audience will keep up the support.

The stage is supposed to be an eye. The round part is the eyeball. You see it move to look down at David Gilmore. And the white lights focus onto him. That is the thing with Pink Floyd concerts. They have the best shows all around. There is things that happen all around the stadium. I saw them live in 94 with their Division Bell Tour. So glad I saw them at least once live.

Pink Floyd was is and will always be my most favorite band (five decades already). Nightwish second and Ayreon third.
PF’s lyrics are deeper than the Mariana Trench.
This is the best live guitar solo ever. The whole Pulse live concert is epic.
    Try the albums:
    Wish you were here
    Animals
    Dark side of the moon
    The wall
PF albums are often concept albums and are therefore best listened to in order of songs and in one go if you want to understand the story.
Don’t forget to look at David Gilmour’s ‘Remeber that night’ live concert.

Phenomenal choice, one of the most beautiful tracks ever recorded, harrowing and sad while just being absolutely stunning. Been a fan of Floyd forever due to my Dad, in fact the first song I ever tried to learn on Guitar was One of These Day...which is an incredible track, well worth watching him perform that live because he does it on a Lap Steel which is a gorgeous sound..
If you want to explore more of these guys there is LOT, and you're going back to the 60's and 70s with a whole bunch of it, it's good to see the roots of some of the bands we listen to now. These guys definitely helped push more progress/experimental sound out into the mainstream. Their influence cannot be overestimated.
I would love to hear what you made of Run Like Hell...it's a bastard of a track lyrically, and has a bouncy quality which can hide some of the viciousness.

Pink Floyd has been around since1967, this is the last tour of Pink Floyd, I saw them in New Orleans, about 60 to 80 thousand people there, the dvd went 7 times platinum, there is so much to the whole show, ex. There were 4 sets of speaker in dome the front and rear an both side. First 30minutes sounds guestion swirl around speaker-got faster and faster them they hit the stage and all kind of laserslights exploded and it was on the most fantastic show every I have witness. And will never see again thank you Pink Floyd for doing it Right.

I always think of the dying process while your ship sails into the sunset. The solo to me is an argument against life and death with questions being asked "Why is it my time to die"? The answer is not what you want to hear, you beg for more time to be alive and in the time comes you pass into the unknown, never understanding.
