I would suggest that Gilmours' greatest live "Comfortably Numb", song ending guitar solo, was at Pink Floyds' 1994 Pulse Concert at Earls Court in London.
It's one of the last of the 111 performances of Pink Floyds 94 "The Division Bell" World Tour. The tour was from March to October, in 68 cities, in 17 countries worldwide.
YES times a billion!
Was just coming to say this. That PULSE concert was as close to Floyd Perfection as you can get.
Agreed.
I personally much prefer the Delicate Sound of Thunder version. In my opinion that one is the best crafted, wth the best dramaturgy, each bar brings something new. After that it may have got longer but not better.
Delicate Sound Of Thunder video is peak Gilmour. Multiple well-crafted and powerful solos. Sorrow is my favorite.
David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler. The only guitarists who can pull anyone’s heartstrings right out of their chests. GOAT!
I agree 100 percent
En effet...
the late gary moore had that ability too.....
Agreeeed
You just cited 2 of my absolute BEST lead guitarists of all time, great call (great minds think alike, lol)!
According to a guitar magazine years ago, David Gilmour was deemed The Undisputed Dean of the Compound Bend and has practically perfect note placement. He admits that he never was a fast playing guitar player but I'd rather hear him play than other guitarist.
David Gilmour is my favorite of all time! He can bring tears to my eyes!
Couldn’t agree more. Would also put Mark Knoffler up there as well personally.
SAME HERE
The Pulse concert Pink Floyd was on fire. This solo is one of his greatest solos recorded. That said, you really should listen to and watch Gilmour perform "Sorrow". There are two lead singers of Pink Floyd Gilmour and Gilmour's Strat.
This was Pompeii not Pulse.
@steveboyes2090 Steve thanks for your correction as to which concert this is from. When I posted my comment I just wrote Pulse. Gilmour solo is still great.
"His solos serves the song".
Truer words were never spoken. Gilmour's solos are as much an extension of the lyrics, as they are guitar solos. It doesn't just add to the song, it completes it in so many ways.
This Live at Pompeii 2016 is my favourite version, harder edged than earlier recordings, also the sheer enthusiasm of Steve Distanislao on drums beefs up the performance, when you see guys still enjoying playing their music after so many years it shines through in the sound.
Steve and David were totally hooked up in the Pompeii version. Pink Floyd is always better when Roger Waters is no where around.
Hands down his best I’ve heard. Which pretty much makes it perhaps the best live solo ever
David Gilmour is a legitimate Living Guitar God. The man can do more with one note than most can do with an entire fret board. A bit of trivia. The guitar strap hes using is one of Jimi Hendrix's Gilmours wife bought it for him for his birthday. You should react to the Pulse performances
One of the greatest bit of guitar knowledge I've heard Dave say that it's not how many notes you play it's how you play a single note.
IMO, the Pulse concert version is better visual display, but any version is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the reactions.
Yes by a country mile, Best concert ever
This one solo has always brought me to tears. Literally. The emotion it pulls out of you is fantastic.
David plays with emotion and feelings, almost like he’s telling a story.
There are a number of live performances of the song to be found on youtube and the Pulse solo is truly mega BUT I cannot agree that it is the best because all of the different performances I have seen so far are perfect in their own different ways. What I'm trying to say is that I find them all truly memorable and exceptional, and actually there are aspects of this solo that I prefer to the Pulse concert. All of this is 'in my humble opinion' of course!
A secret favorite of mine is the version Gilmour solo 1986 at the colombian vulcano benefit - maybe the most metal version of this song ever!
And Venice 1989 of course (edit: WITH the few bars cut out in the recent remaster - will never understand that)
I vote for the Pulse video !
I've seen Gilmour playing this live 3 times, and the version that I prefer is the last in Rome at Circo Massimo, the same tour of Dave Gilmour at Pompeii. Another amazing version is on Live in Gdansk. There you can appreciate also his two solos on High Hopes.
I was one of the 2000 or so people in the crowd for this performance in Pompeii; a birthday present to myself and one of the most special and memorable gigs I've ever been to. Great to see that David is working on a new album due to come out next year. I personally don't think that it was his best live solo (the sound mix was also very substandard on this particular rendering) but music's such a subjective thing, many are always going to disagree. I'm just glad he's still out there making music for the sake of making music - he doesn't need the money, that's for sure.
Gilmour uses DOUBLE COMPRESSION as well as CHORUS AND DELAY to get that CLEAN yet DISTORTED Lead Guitar tone. He delivers what the song calls for. No more and no less which is a VERY FINE LINE. THAT is the definition of EPIC.
Dave is the living embodiment of emotion over speed.
Both solos on this song are the greatest guitar solos ever recorded. Period.
Mark Knopfler Telegraph Road knocks spots off of this.
@@BertSmithLondonagree with you but not feller above.
You've heard them all, then? Silly comment.
@@laurieharper1526 LOL Am I not entitled to an opinion?
@@richardbarnes5529 "The greatest guitar solos ever recorded. Period."? Hardly an "opinion" (save perhaps an ill-informed one), more an assertion of absolute truth...
The second solo at the 1994 Pulse concert is the greatest soulful solo ever performed and his best ever. I'd love you to review that one.
I was fortunate enough to have seen this tour in 2016 when it came through Chicago. He was 70 years old that year an as you can hear, still sounded amazing. The Pink Floyd 'Pulse' live version from 1994 might be the best performance of 'Comfortably Numb', but I love this version, too. I also suggest checking the Pulse concert version of 'Sorrow', which features another amazing Gilmour solo.
❤ Wonder how many years he's been playing that lead. He was like 70 years old when he was playing this episode.
Mesmerizing isn't it? 😀
And the man was 70+ years old rocking the house down.
That legendary black Strat! If I could have one guitar LOL.
It’s an amazing guitar solo. Heard it a thousand times but every time it strikes me!
I think most people would point to his Pulse performance of this song from 1994. It’s way cleaner than this one, and goes places this solo doesn’t. With that said, I find this Pompeii performance (and all of his more recent solos) to be more satisfying. They’re a little dirtier, more distorted. Still technically perfect, but I just love the deeper tone, it suits his age and wisdom well. This solo, he’s done hundreds of times, and while they all follow the same basic structure and progressions, every single one of them is slightly different if you listen closely.
While Pulse is obviously a top candidate for this discussion, I’m actually partial to one from Delicate sound of thunder concert. Especially the 2019 remaster!! It has such a darker feel and 80’s vibe and he absolutely crushes it!
It's a close second to Pulse. For me, I also take into account the enormity of the venue and the stage and lights. That's where Pulse puts me over the top.
comfortably numb live solo and Sorrow solo (gilmours fave) are definitely legendary as far as i'm concerned for Gilmour as a guitarist/musician. have seen them both live and can say without a doubt they are crowd stopping moments of sheer magic
Certainly the best for the time period of the concert. David has been making magic with that "solo" for so long it is impossible to pick just one. The original studio track is amazing and the live versions over the decades are also amazing as they morph while staying true to the original record. I said "solo" because this 2nd one, the dark solo, is really an entire performance that is an integral part of the story the entire song is telling. ❤ Cool channel you have. Keep it rolling!
Great reaction! Thank you!
AND IT'S 2 DISC DVD AND DAVID GILMORE SINGS THE ENTIRE DARK SIDE OF MOON SONGS AND HE SINGS A SONG CALLED MONEY AND A MAN PLAYS THE SAXOPHONE 🎷 IN THIS SONG AND I'VE GOT A CD CALLED DARK SIDE OF THE MOON AND it's A GOLD PLATED CD AND i PLAY IT ON MY YAMAHA CD PLAYER THROUGH A PAIR OF JBL SPEAKERS AND THEY SOUND GREAT 😁
David Gilmour not only encapsulates blues, rock, and jazz to perfection...but he emotes feelings. I came a bit after his time, but i immediately was a fan. He is easily top 10 ever!!! Show me someone better on a clean up solo!!!
He is using his "Black Strat" which is actually a Parts Caster. (It has been rebuilt so much over the years) He likes the trem bar shortened to make it usable without shifting his hand. It also has an extra switch to combine the bridge and neck pick ups in a sound not usually in a Strat. Last is his specially wound bridge pick up made just for him. All for a guy that knows how to use it! It sold in a charity auction for 3.9 M USD!
Sooooo many great solos by DG! I'm gonna say it: he's my fave guitarist.
Dave Gilmour is a god on the guitar
Pink Floyd are legendary and his guitar has been a massive part of that status
My all time favourite band by a country mile
That Black Strat from Fender makes his iconic sound. He's a great acoustic player as well. One of my favorite artists,
No it doesn't, Gilmour makes his iconic sound. He could take any strat or similar guitar off the shelf and he would sund like himself
Great live music, including gilmour solos, on 1994 Pulse concert in London. Some feel his solo on Comfortably Numb from that concert is one of his best.
Personally I love his work on Any Color You Like from 1972 Brighton concert. Great early workout on one of songs from Dark Side of the Moon. Have fun
this is a master playing what is running through his mind. No one can duplicate this. trying to find words to describe what you are hearing is useless. Best thing to do is just listen
Thank you for listening all the way through. He's one of a kind.
I think the Gdansk version doesn't get enough love. Also I think for Echoes is it the definitive live version. But also the solo on Fat Old Sun is awesome and much grittier than David's other solo's. On Shine On they do the actual glass intro and David does the first verses practically a capella, it is magical. So all David fans seek out the Gdansk version of the Floyd classics and you will not be disappointed.
Add-on - David's guitar solo on In Any Tongue (Pompeii live version) is soul gripping. The whole live version of the song is something to seek out. His later solo work, especially live might not be known to all fans, who may tend to stick with the Floyd stuff. That is understandable of course, but don't miss out on his other work too.
I'm 47, soon to be 48. It might be the best but i still love those late 80s early 90s solos from Kirk Hammett and Dimebag Darrell. The solos from songs like One and Nothing Else Matters by Metallica and I'm Broken and Cemetary Gates by Pantera. It's all subjective.
I remember in 1979 or '80, I heard a radio interview with David on, I think, Westwood One out of L.A. where he talked about his playing style. He said he was less interested in shredding (though I suspect he has the chops to do that), but more interested in the giving the melody room to occupy its own space. And, to me, David occupies that space better than anyone. He wrote the music for "Comfortably Numb" for a solo project, but brought in to the band for "The Wall," and Roger wrote the lyrics.
Any solo on this song by David is great. He is a master at playing what is needed without playing too much, and his tone is great. He and Pink Floyd have been a favorite of mine for years. Thanks Travis, and hope all is well with you.I would also like to ask you to look into Golden Earring,a Dutch band that has some pretty good musicians and songs. They started in '61 with lead guitarist/singer George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen who plays a great bass. They had a few different members before getting Barry Hay on vocals, guitar and flute and Cesar Luiderwijk who is a heck of a drummer. That lineup stayed togther from '70 till '21 when George was diagnosed with ALS.They have a concert from '82 from the Rockpalast that is very good to watch.Radar Love,Vanilla Queen and Twilight Zone are ones showing how talented those guys were,as well as videos from around 2019 showing what a group of older guys could do.Merry Christmas Travis!
The Guitar God that is Mr David Gilmour, nuff said
It took 77 years to create this masterpiece. The solo alone is the most incredible solo I ever heard. Astounding!,,,
My favorite guitarist! Looks like this is a more recent video but I'd recommend an older one from the 80's or the 90's. He's slowed a bit in his old age but it still is epic. Not bad for a 77 year old, but when he was younger, he was even better!
There are guitarists, rock stars, guitar gods, and then there's David Gilmour, who can make the hairs on yours arms stand up, who can bring tears to your eyes. And these are tears of joy. David is the one who connects the instrument to the soul.
It's not only David Gilmore's best performance, it's simply the greatest guitar solo. By anyone. Ever.
In your opinion, right? Not mine, however.
pulse concert was amazingly clean and beautiful...Watch out though you are gonna get major goose bumps and chills :)
It's a beautiful solo, he's my favourite guitarist. Can I suggest you watch him performing a song called "fat old sun" at the royal Albert hall on his tour supporting the "on an island" album. I think it was in 2006.
Starts off as a mellow acoustic thing and then he switches guitars and plays an amazing solo at the end
That Black Strat he was playing was sold @ Auction in 2019 for 2.8million!!! The Indianapolis Colts owner has it now…
The strap Gilmour is using in this performance is the same strap Jimi Hendrix used to play Star Spangled Banner for us at Atlanta Pop on July 4th, 1970!!! Imagine the value of that piece today!!!
I have never heard that
Incontrario.. 😊😊😊
For me, It is the greatest guitar solo, ever. By anybody. I've never heard better.
Guy is stunned and has no words
Even the studio version of this song is amazing...
As Roger Waters said once "David is the only guy who can express so many things only with two single notes".
He is a phenomenon!
And then the DSOTM Redux happened.
"two single notes"
OK. David Gilmour can certainly express MUCH more than almost anyone with only two single notes.
Of course, Roger Waters had to be hand-held and coddled to understand which two notes they were.
He is unmatched
No, he really isn't. There are a few out there atthesame level, maybe higher even, but that, of course, is purely a matter of opinion.
Gilmour always serves the music. He's the GOAT. You'll be hard pressed to find a Pink Floyd song without a Gilmour solo in it. I hope you continue listening to PF. They've influenced every genre of music that's come after them and, imo, they're the best that's ever been. Also, hopefully you'll get to listen to the whole song next time. PF is a feast for the ears and soul and none of it should be missed. Happy listening! 🤘🏽💜🎸
I got to see PF on their Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. Listening to David play this was a memorable experience. As good as the studio versions is, seeing him live is MUCH better.
He makes the guitar sing 👏
Please check out Comfortably Numb LIVE from the PULSE CONCERT. The extended guitar solo and spectacular light show combine for an unforgettable performance.
4 note segway from intro to verse of Shine on You Crazy Diamond,,,,,,,,,,,,, GOLD
Thats bad ass man, couldnt imagine being able to stand on stage and play that man, makes my hair stand up at 61 yrs old, love it
His guitar playing is not about showing how skilful he is, instead it's there to achieve what the composer wanted to express.
David Gilmour is by far the best guitarist there has ever been and this solo proves just that! This is the best guitar solo ever!
Awesome
david gilmour ... just him thats all anyone needs
Few have mastery of the guitar, David is among them. This is just him putting the black strat through its paces.
Never fails to give me goosebumps, listening to the solo from "Comfortably Numb".
Proof that one can be a great guitarist without "shredding".
This version was at Pompeii where Dave return from him Playing with Pink Floyd 43 yrs ago. Dave the person to play in the amphitheater twice since 79 AD when the volcano destroy the city.
This IS his greatest guitar performance
That’s so 1990 September country off the top of my head
The best solo performance of comfortably numb by David fir me is live at Gdańsk
I'm still going with Echoes as Gilmour's most iconic guitar performance at Pompeii with no audience.
I also like his Delicate Sound of Thunder version as well.............seems to go on longer ....in a good way ,of course :)
You are right in that you can recognize David from just a few notes, he's got such a definitive tone. He you are also right that the solos he plays serve the songs...
First he plays every performance different The one in Brazil I like also because he resolves the verses in the solos where he never used to. They ran into each other
David's guitar playing is like the voice of an outstanding singer, while being an outstanding singe in his own right
His guitar strap in this was owned by Jimi Hendrix. Birthday present from his wife.
Saw the division bell tour third row still have a drumstick and agree the pulse version of comfortably numb is his greatest solo.
To really get the full punch of this solo you should watch the entire song. The solo is the climax of a slowly building emotional masterpiece.
2nd best recorded performance imo. The 1994 Pulse version is my no1. Check it out if you haven’t already🤘
You came in 1/2 way through.... Start from the beginning! one of the best guitar solos ever....
The delicate sound of thunder version is my favorite
The starship is ready, set the controls for the heart of the sun
I'VE GOT THE PINK FLOYD PULSE CONCERT ON DVD AND DAVID GILMORES GUITAR SOLO Live ON UTUBE WHERE HE PLAYS A GUITAR SOLO Live IS THE GREATEST ONE EVER 🎸
An interesting note on the 2 solos in "Comfortably Numb": Apparently, in concerts, Gilmour plays the 1st solo pretty much as recorded in the studio. In the 2nd though, he just plays what he feels.
... I'll definitely 2nd the call out for "Sorrow" .... being right there with "Comfortably Numb"...
... Gilmour, Best for Feeling and Tone without doubt. PERIOD.
It’s “Far Out Man”, to speak in the vernacular of the era … 😎
Perfection. He doesn't overplay .. Now .. Try "The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil (Official Lyric Video)" The guitar solo is the most restrained ever. It isn't the solo as much as the parts in between. He knows when to shut up and shout out and this is the most elegant version. "Gary Moore ''Separate Ways'' (HQ live from London 1992,with extended guitar intro )" He pulls stuff out of another plain. "Lou Reed - Sweet Jane from Rock n Roll Animal" Listed in the top 200 and a duel solo. "Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain (Live in Syracuse, March 30, 1985)" Prince purposefully ran from the guitar hero dungeon. He let others play and had other projects. When taken from the top guitarists list he did this "2021 Remaster "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Prince, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Steve Winwood" When Prince had his turn he never gave it back, watch al the folks as they try to get the order back. He has so much fun. "Stairway to Heaven Stanley Jordan" specific again and put up by youtuber Randy Rhoads. Amazing ability. "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)" If you find the live video from "Rainbow Bridge" then even bestest ... This is another above and beyond tune. "Ted Nugent - Hibernation" put up by blite13. If someone wanted to learn rock guitar. This is the first lesson. This is a tune Terrible Ted used to practice with. He is the most under rated guitarist ever because he has absolutely no ability to shut his mouth. He can make more people P-oed in 5 minutes than anyone else in a lifetime. He shuts up and lets loose on a beautiful jam here.
I would argue that On The Turning Away is his best live performance.
What a beautiful performance. Timely, given the time of year as well.
There are two solos in this song, a light and a dark. You reviewed the dark solo but the light one is also great and has a completely different vibe to it.
CHECKING OUT THE LYRICS, COMFORTABLY NUMB WAS WRITTEN BY ROGER WATERS AFTER HE WAS SEDATED BEFORE A SHOW BECAUSE HE WAS APPREHENSIVE ABOUT THE SHOW. IT DOESNT SAY WHY BUT HE HAD TO BE INJECTED WITH A SEDATIVE TO CALM HIM DOWN SO HE COULD PERFORM. ANOTHER GREAT LYRICAL SONG IS,"ON THE TURNING AWAY" IT OCCURRED TO ME AFTER READING THE LYRICS SEVERAL TIMES, I THINK ITS ABOUT HOW PROPLE TURN THEIR BACKS ON THOSE LESS FORTUNATE OR HAVING MOREHEALTH PROBLEMS THAN THEM.🤩
Comfortably Numb (the tune he just played) but from the 1994 Pulse concert. Actually the entire song as a whole.
"One of these days'" you say? That song is also some great guitar.
The David^2 version with David Gilmour and David Bowie is worth watching all the way through.
I love all of his solos, but I prefer the live versions from live at Gadnst. They perform with a full orchestra, and Richard Wright is on keyboards. Unbelievable concert in my humble opinion.
Listen to the 1994 Pulse Concert at Earls Court version. BEST OF ALL TIME!!!
That was weird, some pictures of Gilmour, but the tones from an imitator ( maybe the Australian cover band?) and then a foreign drone shown in pictures, not the original band member I just shut down, did not want to look further after 1.45
94 Pulse Concert Comfortably Numb is the best you will ever hear
Love them all but my favorite was live at Gdanks concert. Check it out.
While not technically complex he wrote it and is so soulful can still bring my hairs on end! 🙏🏽
