Sam Brown.. such a sad story, she made 2 solo albums, witch were actually quite good, Gilmore did some guitarstuff on it. But then in 2007 she had a cyste removed from her vocalcords, and lost her singing voice permanently. And the world lost a nother great singer.

Clare Torry born 1947 the main backing singer on great gig in the sky was invited by David gilmour in 1973 to sing the backing vocals for this particular track she was 26 years old at the time.
She turned up to the recording studio, listened to the music one time and then sang the backing vocals in one take.
This of course being only one song of the greatest album pink Floyd ever made dark side of the moon.
    She is an unbelievable talent.

I had the chance to see this show two evenings in a row at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal in 1994.
Never in my life have I attended another show that left its audience in such a state at the end of the show.
No pun intended, the crowd left the stadium in a state of "Comfortably Numb", but really in a state of surreal comfort.
The public knew that they had just witnessed an extraordinary event. Sorry to those who were unable to attend this memorable concert.

If your looking for a great Pink Floyd experience, look up "Shine on your crazy diamond". Its a song written about one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett. His mind never returned from an extended LSD trip in 1968. This song is about the band's sadness at the loss of their soul mate. Although his body survived, the real Syd never returned.

3 incredible backup singers = 1 Clare Torry improvising for an hour with just a few instructions from the band, she did 2 full takes and reportedly gave up on a third take saying in effect she'd already given it her all, she was paid £30 and she apologized thinking she didn't give them what they wanted. Didn't know they used her work until she saw the record in the store. Looking at the liner notes there was nothing about her contribution, when it really is half the song. It was on the Billboard 200 albums chart for 736 nonconsecutive weeks.
From 2005: "Torry provided the improvised vocal on The Great Gig In The Sky, and was paid the standard fee of £30 for her work on January 23rd 1973. However, some thirty-one years later she claimed that she composed the song, and asked the High Court for monies she believed were due to her, a half-share of copyright ownership and a 50 per cent share, possibly worth millions, of past and future income.
Torry said they (the band and EMI) had breached her copyright and asked for damages and for "all illicit copies of the song to be destroyed". This could have resulted in the album being withdrawn from sale temporarily.
This week, the High Court judged on the side of Ms Torry, and have awarded her a half-share on copyright ownership of the song. The amount of the out-of-court settlement has not been disclosed, prompting much speculation as to the amount."

British singer Clare Torry sane the original recording on Dark Side of the Moon. No one has ever been able to replicate her performance. On the Pulse tour they had no less than three singers to try and replicate Claire. Taking nothing away from the great performers that sang on that tour, but no one ever has been able alone to cover the great Clare Torry.

Music sometimes brings out our emotions even if we wish they didn't. I freakin cried a bit when I saw these guys in Philly in 87 and they opened with Echoes, the best Floyd song ever. Back then, the Floyd weren't known for breaking out the oldies and we all thought they retired the song. 27 years old standing in JFK STADIUM crying like an idiot and I wouldn't trade that memory for the world. I teared up seeing King Crimson doing the oldies thing before they called it a day too. What's an old guy gonna do lol?

I've often thought that the music of Pink Floyd, in some unknown magical way, strikes us so emotionally by not being music for the ears but instead being music for the soul. It's like we feel the music on a deeper level than simple hearing, and that can make it strike up all sorts of reactions in us.

She did this in 2 takes and she stop on the third as she said she couldn't do any better. rest is history. Lily - I think GGITS has so much emotional impact because of the complete lack of words with the simplicity of the instrumentation. This song follows "Time" on the album and Time ends with people on their knees in a chur h while the bells toil - a funeral! And GGITS is an expression of the stages of grief/dying. WOW!!
BTW - Highly recommend Run Like Hell from the Pulse dvd. It is the concert closer and follows Comfortably Numb. A powerful high tempo song with explosive lighting!

The cool thing is on the Dark Side of the Moon this song was done in one take. That album is by far the best recorded music ever done. You have awesome taste and intelligence to love Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd music is more of an experience than other songs.

I would love to see your reaction to the Moody Blues, Knights in White Satin , and then take a journey with everything from Fleetwood Mac.

Sam Brown has had hit singles and albums in her own right, was a regular ukulele player with her close friend George Harrison before he passed; and sang Horse to Water at his memorial concert. Lost her voice a few years ago, but now recovered. There is a Clare Torry live version on here from the PF Knebworth show. but she wasn't at her best. I was lucky enough to be at both the Pulse London gigs and the Knebworth show in the pouring rain.

Check out ECHOES at Gdańsk - Rick and David’s last performance before Rick passed - it’s very special but everyone else will tell you Pompeii! I introduced the band on one of its first performances so it has a special place in my heart

It kind of struck me when the first girl "Sam Brown" started vocalizing because she looks like she could be your sister. Then you have Durga McBroom in the middle and Claudia Fontaine to close it out!! The very first time back in 1973 when I heard Clare Torry start the song I didn't know what was going on?? By the time she was finished I was completely speechless!! These three girls really did this song justice as well but I don't think you can compare the two. What a great album from beginning to end!
Try "High Hope's" from the Pulse concert next. Mr Gillmore plays some of the most beautiful notes ever on the pedal steel guitar on that one!!

To be there......to mainline the universes energy directly from these wonderful transucers.....that we call Pink Floyd.....and their medium...music. I actually prefer the live version................but it speaks volums that it took 3 talented ladies to translate what Clare Torry created in 2 takes. Thanks for diving back into the live version ....always stick with the live work of Floyd....their concerts are spiritual experiences.

From the same Pulse concert, there are two other epic performances, which are 'Comfortably Numb', (one of the most incredible guitar solos of all time) and 'Wish you were here'.

Hi Lily; Love your reactions in general and especially Pink Floyd. I was fortunate enough to see the Pulse concert live at the Silverdome in Detroit. It was apparently the first time they ever performed Dark Side of the Moon in its' entirety live. I highly recommend the closing song of the concert, Run Like Hell. It gives Comfortably Numb a run for the money as the most spectacular song of the concert. Fun fact: Apparently the production cost approximately $2, 000, 000.they built two complete productions and while they were performing in one city, they were setting up in the next city.. BTW, two mil was a lot more back then ;) Take care and thanks.

I've got to say that "Time" from Pulse and "Yet Another Movie" from The Delicate Sound of Thunder are my favorite live performances by Pink Floyd. Still, there are so many great live performances from this band, it's hard to pass any of them by. Peace to you!
