UPDATE: so the mass consensus is we must do the album version so that is what we will do very soon! Sorry all for getting the name wrong of the original singer. I must have been thinking about Nightwish at that moment but yes, her name was Clare Torry.
WolfKain, I'm working on a cover of Pink Floyd's "Fearless" as we speak. I'm not done mixing the vocals but I'll link it to you somewhere when it's complete. Nearly there. More of a rock/space vibe than their stripped-down acoustic original.

This is nice but nothing can compare to the original singing riff of Claire Torrey on the album. She killlllllllllled the death sequence to the rapture.
That's what I was thinking too. There is something extra to a live version, but even w/ picking 3 different singers to share the vocals (because the song is apparently exhausting to sing, because singing isn't quite what it is, you have to pull these vocals from your core), not one of them could even hold a candle to the original Claire Torrey. Unfortunately, the only live version I found w/ Torrey singing it is vocal only and didn't have video of it.
Yeah, this would've been amazing to hear live, but the original singer absolutely destroyed it - made me super emotional the first time I ever heard it.

Claire torrey was getting constantly asked to go to the studio but she was busy finally she went down there not knowing who she was singing for and they never explained what they wanted she improvised and done her own thing. 12 months later she walked past a record shop and seen a sign 'New Pink Floyd album out now so she went in and bought it believe it or not.
Rest In Peace, Richard! You and Clair left yours footprint in the world of music. Thanks a lot for both of you!

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is said to be life, that's why the album starts with a heartbeat. Life progresses through the different songs. This song is supposed to be experiencing the loss of your parents. The vocals represent the five stages of grief.

The song was meant to be a vocal expression of the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Pink Floyd and Clare Torry did an exceptional job of interpreting. The song is meant to evoke deep emotions, and it does.
Also, it was only done in 2 takes which is really unbelievable!
@@davidstufflebean3285 No. They only ran through the song start to end twice, once they decided how it would go. It took the singer a little while to find the right voice that Floyd was looking for. Once she hit the right groove the did two full takes and it was a wrap. That doesn't mean they ran through many partial takes.

I was trying to say they did some partial takes in addition to the two full takes but I was drunk and I type too fast. I sometimes leave out words because my brain gets ahead of my fingers. the last sentence should have said, "That doesn't mean they didn't run through many partial takes." Sorry for the confusion. I did not know how many partials there were but I did remember reading somewhere that it did happen.

The Great Gig is such an amazing song.. It doesn't have words, but it speaks to you. Sistah, you need to listen to the album version.

The blond backup singer is Sam Brown who had her own music career going on at this time. She was a "Pop" singer in the UK and had a #1 hit single entitled "Stop". She jumped at the chance to work with Pink Floyd for this concert and, I think, she also worked several concerts with them just before this concert series at Earls Court. That is how respected Pink Floyd was back in the day. Artists were willing to put their own careers on hold just for a opportunity to work with these guys.
I get it. Been listening to this song for over 45 years and it still stirs emotions within my soul. Too bad you never heard it live in a stadium with 70,000 people. You could hear a pin drop....profoundly hypnotic. The experience has never left me.
HalfLifeSistah seems to have the same neurological connections I have: certain musical notes activate our tear ducts. Since first hearing this song on the album in the very early 1970s, my eyes have always been blurry after hearing this tune -- not really a song since it doesn't have lyrics, simply raw emotions as the means of communication. I love y'all's sensitivity, musical knowledge, and fearless showing of your emotions. Thank you!

Totally agree with Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Easily the one of the best composed rock songs of all time. To me, it's as close to a classical music composition you're going to get in the rock genre.

When Richard Wright, the keyboardist, died in 2008, it was this song that was sung at his funeral by Durga Mc Broom,one of the Backgroundsinger from the Pink Floyd World Tour. This was his express wish during his lifetime. The rumor persists that none other than Jon Lord accompanied on the piano.

When i grew up, if somebody got a new "Stereo" set up, Pink Floyd would ALWAYS be the test reference. I have so many memories throughout my life, with a Pink Floyd Soundtrack. You are absolutly right. But since the only Pink Floyd Album that i can't get down with is Ummagumma (?), Waters/Gilmour and the others were Pink Floyd to me. Barrett surely was a crucial influence, but … whatever, you are correct :-D

Hey guys. I just wanted to say thank you both. Your channel is a lot of fun. I am a huge fan of Pink Floyd so this was a really great video for me
The *original vocalist* from the album was *Clare Torry.* Pink Floyd had the music down but couldn't put lyrics to this song. Then they brought Torry in to do background vocals for this song. Still, *Pink Floyd (Roger Waters & David Gilmour)* still didn't write the lyrics. Torry said let her hear what they had. She listened a few times & decided to record her voice just like an instrument. Torry did 2 takes. On the 3rd take, she told *Alan Parsons (yes, that Alan Parsons from The Alan Parson's Project,* who engineered the Dark Side sessions) during the 3rd take, she can't do it no more. Torry said you got my best. Then Torry left the studio for a party. She found out months later at a record store that Floyd used her vocals (two takes) for this song. Years later, she sued for extra royalties & a song writing credit for the "lyrics".
Yup, having recently been in San Francisco and Portland OR, they both have Pink Floyd shows at the planetarium!
I've been listening to this song for most of my life, and this album came out the year I was born, and it still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.

Great video, although I think the original record is better than this live version. The whole Dark side of the moon album makes me alternate between chills and tearing up whenever I listen to it.
Yeah it is...but Sam Brown was amazing ,the part where she "growls" puts the hair up on my arms.
"Time" puts me in tears right from the first line. And the effect only gets deeper as I get older. I've thought about have the line about time having run out put on my tombstone.
What I adore about her reactions. Is they are honest reactions. Her actions remind me a lot of how I felt the first time I heard these songs when I was a young . Is very melancholy on my part

I have followed Pink Floyd since they started in the late sixties and saw them many times. This is still one of my favourite tracks of all times and listening to it never fails to bring tears to my eyes, not because it's sad but for the beauty of the music and the incredible vocal contribution by Claire Torry, which she created just listening to the backing track and got down in a single take!
If you don't cry when you hear this, you're already dead! Cry away Sistah, you're in good company! x

Agreeing with so many here that Claire Torrey's original is so much better. In part because it is just a voice crying in the wilderness, like an ancient prophetess. So powerful. Floyd had an amazing talent for capturing the sense of infinite space, the universe arcing about you, the music of the spheres...
LASERIUM!!! OMG, I went to see those shows at the Griffith Park Planetarium in the late 70's. I miss those shows so much. Mind-blowing, we would stagger out of the building afterwards and sit out on the lawn, looking up at the universe above us. The Pink Floyd show was fabulous. Man, SUCH MEMORIES.

Disagree. I've heard all the versions and this by far to me is the most emotional and nobody beats Sam Brown. Clare's is great too, but it's too repetitive.
I'll be the first of many to make 2 points: 1. Your information is wrong. The singer is Claire Torrey. 2. You need to do the studio version of this. No human can do justice to this song and reproduce Claire's vocals.

I believe it's all about copyright. Album cuts are prohibited but in concert videos are not.

She needs to hear an EPIC. Dream Theater-A Change of Seasons, Genesis-Supper's Ready, Pink Floyd- Echoes, Symphony X- The Odessey or almost any of Transatlantic's long songs.

When listening to this I always imagine a person on his/her deathbed going through the five stages of death and dying - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance before he/she heads off to The Great Gig in the Sky. The vocalisation seems to emote these stages as it progresses. Great to see you being introduced to another one of my favourites. Of course, the album version is the definitive version.

It's very true. The 1970s Pink Floyd albums really need to be listened to as the entire album, one song really flows into another. From "Dark Side of the Moon," to "Wish You Were Here," to "Animals," all 3 albums are highly conceptual, where the individual songs are excellent, but when listened to in the order originally designed by the artists, who did whatever it took, and spared no expense to get exactly what they wanted, taking over a year to record and produce a single album in the 1970s, listening to the album as a whole is a true experience, and the time will fly by.
Wonderful comment from both of you, I feel the same with Pink Floyd. The emotion, brings you to another space, another level. PF is the only band that does that to me. Maybe Shine on you crazy Diamond is the next song? Make sure to tell the (rather sad) story behind it, it makes listening to the song that much more of a complete experience. Keep it going guys!

No kidding. The Clare Torry album version is one that I can no longer listen to fully because it makes me tear up and I am 57 years old and a child of the 70's. It was beautiful when I first heard it and it is just as beautiful today.

The song is a about child birth. In the beginning of the 3rd singer you can hear i never said i was afraid of dying. But its very hard to hear so listen carefully. The whole album is about life. Begins with a heartbeat and ends with a heartbeat. What does our life consist of. Time. Money. Child birth. On the run. War. Us and them. Getting old Brain damage. Epic album. Concept album
studio version is way better
Our host was obviously quite familiar with the original studio version, so it boggles my mind that he would choose this much, much later live version. So now the impression on his partner (and other first time listeners) has been tainted. Sacrilege.

Raw emotion is exactly what Pink Floyd elicits. Any Pink Floyd fan, if they are being honest, will have had a similar reaction to one of their songs at some point.
I saw the Laser Light show with Pink Floyd in Toronto in the mid 70’s and yeah we were stoned and it blew us away.
I showed Durga the 2nd lady that sings, your video she was blown away by your reaction to her singing.

Even though this is great it still fails in comparison to the studio version of Dark Side on the Moon and Clare Tory singing on the album is epic. She does alone what it took three girls on stage to do and much more soulful If you think you were crying before it's nothing compared to the album version . Listen and review it

One of the greatest songs ever produced. Only way to describe it is life itself from the day your born to the day you your spirt leaves and moves on. Ive seen Pink Floyd twice in concert back in the eighties and I was never disappointed with their performance. The light show itself was amazing. God bless you both..
You should definitely do Comfortably Numb from the same concert :) Also, Echoes, either the studio version or the one called 'Final "Echoes"performance with Richard Wright (Pink Floyd)' (surpasses the original in my opinion).
Finally, I know it maybe difficult due to copyright but try to do an album reaction (like "Wish you were here"), that's how Pink Floyd are meant to be heard, the songs in each album are connected and feel like a journey.

It’s said that Torry had no idea who Pink Floyd were. Walked into the studio, and was told that there was no actual written words for the mix. When she was done recording, she said that she had Nothing Left, she had sung to Her Soul !

There is a great clip on the Classic Album series "The Making of The Dark Side of the Moon" DVD where Richard Wright (R.I.P.) says that Clare Torry came out the vocal booth in tears saying she was sorry that she did so badly(she thought she flubbed it anyway) and the band members quite assured her that what she pulled off was brilliant. Nice story. Also incredible track by track breakdown, not just each song, but the layers involved musically and vocally that made each track. By the original producer himself, the man Alan Parsons not his "Project".LOL.Cheers from the canadian Queen nut. Great reaction btw.
