Do you have the iPhone 13? Let me know in the comments what your experience has been?
I had the iPhone 12 mini. Then went to the IPhone 13 and red 🤦🏾♂️. I went straight to the iPhone 13 mini and I am staying until the phone dies. I love the mini!!!
Hi Apple.... yes, please cancel the iPhone Mini.... yes... but .... give us the....iPhone Pro Mini please
pro mini sounds good!
I really enjoyed your review. That being said, one thing I’ve done in switching to the iPhone 13 Mini is use a 3rd party app for shooting which lets me shoot in RAW and truly dial in settings like you said. I have really enjoyed Halide. Agree that Apple should let us disable HDR for sure! Even if they have to bury it in settings I’ll take it. Also I actually switched to a Mini from a 13 Pro Max. It was just too much phone. I was going to go with the regular Pro but it was still bigger than I wanted. I also have an iPad Mini gen 6 which made this an easier move. Anyway! Thanks for your review!
Thanks for the app recommendation, I’ll check it out!
You have a great camera presence!
The way you explain is clear and concise. Its one of those things that make you want to watch a video till the end.
Well, thanks! It takes a lot of practice and I’m still learning :)
I’m definitely here to the end of it!
You are one of the few people who ACTUALLY MENTIONS THIS, i would not ave chosen the 13 mini if i knew you couldnt disable HDR, wouldve gone with a 12 mini in that case for sure. And im no proffesional phtographer but its obvious this camera is processing things after you take a photo and it makes edges so sharp sometimes when you take indoor pictures things can even look gross, its crazy. The workaround with editing live pics or using 3rd party apps gets annoying with time its frustrating hey give us problems like these
Can you disable smart HDR on the 12 mini?
@@su4359 yes
The quality of your video is just amazing. i just assumed it was one of those videos with 300k-400k. you deserve so much man. Best of luck
That’s very kind! I worked hard on this one and I am always learning new ways to improve what I’m doing :) video is definitely not easy. If you think it’s worthy, feel free to share it, my friend!
@@GaryHughesOfficial I am sad to see the miniseries go, I still feel like there is still a place for small phones.
this was the reason I upgraded from 12 mini to 13 Pro. The focal length and battery was the game changer
Definitely a nice upgrade
I agree entirely with you Gary, I have a similar bitch with night mode as well. Never understood the reduction of flexibility of computational photography when a simple on/off toggle sorts out he problem.
Yes indeed, all I want is an off switch :)
@@GaryHughesOfficial do you advice to buy it or the iphone 12 / 13 i love and enjoy taking photo ?
I totally agree with you! Why on earth did iPhone take away on/off smart HDR button?! Their smart HDR sometimes not so smart and making the faces look flat and unnatural under some lighting condition. Really please iPhone, give us the smart HDR button back!
Agreee!
Agreed. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT.
Good points, thank you. I do think that if one is insistent on the Mini size for portability reasons only, then I’d go for the larger screen size. Carrying any phone in one’s pocket is too close to vital organs. EMFs proximity to prostate - not ideal.
lol, maybe so. Still, I love small technology
@@GaryHughesOfficial I’m old. I’m careful. Take care. 😄
I'm here for all the GH videos. Gary, I've been on Android for a long time now and will have to get an iPhone to run the new Canon connectivity software (IOS only for now). Your info is timely and appreciated as usual. BTW, Happy belated b-day. The real gray kicks in when the daughters start dating.
Grey is fine, as long as the hair stays in place!
I agree with you completely. One workaround is to take your pictures within Lightroom. Full manual control, no enforced HDR. It will really help you realize how terrible the camera is though.
Yes without all of the computational adjustments, the files are pretty bad.
That’s why i went back to the 12 pro from the 13 normal. The 12 pro has the button to turn smart hdr off and i can also use proraw if i want to. Plus the telephoto lens and night time portrait
I’m hoping the HDR is something they will change back in the next version of iOS
I totally agree on your points about the camera. Personally I have an 11 Pro, and while I love the small form factor of the mini, I could never get one simply due to the lack of a standard/«telephoto» lens. I didn’t know Apple removed the smart hdr toggle though, yeah that stinks! I almost exclusively use Lightroom for my shots, as the files are raw and it bypasses the ugly post-processing of the stock camera app (at least some of which I think is what they call deep fusion, as it’s especially bad in indoor lightning condition when night mode doesn’t kick in yet). It’s very disappointing the ways in which Apple restricts their phones and thereby the freedom of the consumer/photographer to choose how THEY want their photos to look. Especially after bragging about how revolutionary and “pro” their camera setups are.
I think that Apple is just making it for the largest amount of people and, to be fair, I think that in most circumstances, the camera works really well. I don’t think they have pro photographers in mind when they design the camera functions :)
Got a 13 mini too recently but I totally agree with you on smart HDR. I was extremely surprised to see how heavily processed (Deep Fusion and Smart HDR) the photos come out while using the default camera app. Most photos come out ok but some are just so processed with obvious AI sharpening and weird AI tone adjustment that just look awful. And yeah on top of that how there's even the option to turn this off is even more shocking. When I'm looking through the viewfinder and snap a picture, that is the image I want, not whatever Apple decides is the best version of the photo after it's taken with no way for me to get the old one back.
I've been trying an app called ProCam which seems to take photos in a way which bypasses smart HDR and deep fusion which I enjoy except it does not have OIS which is a bit of a bummer.
I have tried Pro Cam. The problem is that without all the other computational help, the files just look awful. Hopefully they will bring back the HDR on/off switch :)
Agree with everything you said.
Quick note: I'm on the 15.4 beta and I have a smart HDR toggle. Guess they brought it back due to feedback?
Oh man that would be awesome
@@GaryHughesOfficial damnit… sorry to get your hopes up, but they seem to have removed that button for the 13 line of phones. Shame, oh well
Returned my 13 next day after I bought it due to the same issue you mentioned. Thank you for being so honest, nobody admits that is an issue! I don’t think I will switch from my 11 pro to a new iPhone if they keep releasing such a crappy devices.
I have gotten used to mine, I am using it in situations now where I know it will perform well, but I really would love the option to turn off HDR.
@@GaryHughesOfficial I am very very lucky, I was supposed to turn my 11 pro max in, but something got wrong and apple asked me to mail it in, so I had an opportunity to compare two phones. I wasn’t able to make a night photo, they all looked like it was in the middle of the day in Ecuador, so I returned it and started monitoring macrumors thread, so far apple hasn’t released a fix, so I won’t order iPhone 14 right away after it comes out until I test it first.
The problem with the Pro is that they changed the Telephoto lens to 3x this year. Not only is it worse for low light, I also don’t like the new focal length as much. That’s why I don’t think I would miss it that much, I miss the 2x, I loved that lens, but I miss that one even with the 13 Pro,
I agree, I didn’t notice that until after I made the video. The 3x is actually hard to use you have to back up so much
@@GaryHughesOfficial Yeah exactly… I don’t understand that choice, I loved the 2x on the 12 Pro.
@@GaryHughesOfficial totally agree, so maybe the better choice is to go with the 13 Mini for the form factor and maybe sometimes is a 1,4x digital Zoom the way to go!
It’s really a very good focal length an create some awesome natural background blur ⚖️
Very good video, explained a photographer's vision in a clear and easy to understand way. Congrats!
Well thanks!
My previous phone is iPhone 8 which is I really loved! However, the battery is getting worse so I upgrade to iPhone 13 which is a little bit huge for me😅.
Yes the battery is much better
I want a mini pro, dagnabbit. As it stands currently, I can get an iPhone mini 13 which ergonomically is a joy to use, or a pro 14, which is double the weight, torture as one strains ones fingers to reach around the screen and be bitten into by the preposterous squared phone edge. 😮
Funny enough, I've softened on my dislikes over time. All in all I don't think there is a perfect phone, but the size and ease of use is worth it for me.
thank you so much, I just got the 13 but I am an artist and need it to upload my paintings to website and online places, and only got this phone for that, so this info was major for me to know. thx
no problem!
Do you know how to fix the problem on the iPhone 13 mini that to get close picture shots little literally like 2 inches away and all the other iPhones it does that even the iPhone SE but the iPhone 13 mini you cannot go like finger nail close up
As far as I know, the Mini doesn’t have that function. It’s called a macro mode. One of the disadvantages of the mini
I completely understand your point here, I've just moved from pixel 3a to iPhone 13 mini.... taking photos doesn't give me the same feeling in mini without the HDR.
I love the phone, but hoping for an update that brings back the ability to toggle HDR
I also currently have a Pixel 3A but mine is an XL version, and for the past month i have been seriously looking at the iPhone 13 Mini and the iPhone 13 Pro (not the max version since that's a little out of my price range), watching CZcams videos and reading articles on the current line of iPhones just to see if it's the next phone for me to upgrade to, I have always been an android user so if i do decide to pick up the mini or the pro they will be my first iPhone, i do have my concerns and reservations in switching to a new ecosystem and hope i don't regret it down the line, so videos like this are very informative, thank you Gary, i am not a person that would use this phone as a creative tool like Gary said...so it might be the perfect phone for me, i currently just use my Pixel phone for work, listen to music on Spotify, watch some CZcams videos, read some books on the kindle app, take the occasional snap shot photo of my pup or when out with friends, and that's about it, i am going to give myself a few more weeks before i decide if i should pick up a mini or a pro.
@@davidramirez9222 which did you get eventually? Curious to hear your final decision and experience using it.
@@alvinrodney6229 Hey Alvin, Funny thing is I didn't pick up either of the models of iPhone, I was planning to pick up the Pro Max just to have the bigger screen to read ebooks and what not, but a friend had a brand new Samsung S21 Ultra and made me a good deal on it...I couldnt pass it up, although I am still wanting to maybe pick up the 13 mini just to tip my toes into apples ecosystem and familiarize myself with the OS and the phone, we'll see.
@@davidramirez9222 I was thinking the same, David. Just test the waters of Apple's ecosystem by getting the 13 mini, and then a year or two, if I like the system, upgrade to a pro version. Since we are at the half way point of the 13 series, I think it's not worth getting a 13 pro now. And the 13 mini's unique footprint and rumored being the last of the mini phones make it worth holding on to for the near future. I've been a Samsung and Android guy since my first smartphone- a Note2. Now currently using the S8 plus.. was initially thinking of upgrading to a S22 ultra, but the phone is just too massive.
I have to agree with you concerning the inability to turn off HDR. I hope Apple are listening.
Me too :)
Gary - Best most informative review EVER. I have loved older Iphone images. Tell me though... which I phone could I buy used that would give me the most artistic aesthetic? As far as HDR toggle on and off - did IOS updates remove this from phones (such as the X?) I actually love a 2016 SE image quality - but I recently broke the screen. Anyway in sum what might be the best used Iphone if I value the"art" side of capabilities WITHOUT having to work at 3rd party apps etc..? Thanks in advance
I think it has to do with the OS rather than the phone. My X didn’t have it but I haven’t updated the OS on it. The latest OS probably eliminates the feature but it’s worth a Google search to find out for sure
As a former pro photographer, I just recently started varying a small mirrorless camera around with me in 95% of the time now. I gave up on the iPhone ever since they took away the option to turn off HDR. I’m not a fan of Apples over processing anyway.
Yeah, if you want serious control over your images, still gotta bring your camera :)
@@ballooneyjr4294 Nikon D5600 and the 35mm DX is pretty much all I use for an actual camera.
what camera do You use ?
Was heavily considering a iphone 13 mini but I also want to do photography. Will be waiting for a iPhone 14 Pro. Thank you.
It’s actually a great phone and I’m happy with it overall. I would just like some manual control. I doubt they will change that HDR feature in the next one
@@GaryHughesOfficial I’m disappointed that apple decided to discontinue their mini series when the 14 is out. Did some research and will be getting 13 mini instead.Good review
i love my iphone13 mni because of its small form factor with the same lens from 12 pro. I guess let's just hope Apple updates iOs with that toggle option for the smart hdr.
I think that would be great 👍
is there a camera app in iPhone that doesn't have full automatic settings like normal camera app?
I am still looking for a good one, but I have been told accessing the camera through Lightroom works pretty well.
13 mini user here - I want to offer up a suggestion.
If you’re a professional photographer (which I am), don’t reach for a smartphone! Get a small camera (I have a couple of small fujifilm cameras that destroy any iPhone) and you’ll love family life/daily life photos so much more. I really just use my iPhone camera for pictures of receipts or other random stuff around the house, or maybe a quick video snippet. However, occasionally I might really want to get a “real” photo when I’ve left my camera at home and in these instances, I will definitely be editing my photo in Lightroom.
So, here’s my tip: you can add a Lightroom widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen that takes you directly to the Lightroom camera where you can shoot raw DNGs and immediately edit them. Works great 👍🏼
Great tip!
Hi
I saw your video today and i confirme. With my iphone 12 in ios 16 i can put off HDR function
Good to know, thanks!
Does lightroom support raw in the 13 mini? Planning on getting one. Thanks
According to a quick Google search, yes
@@GaryHughesOfficial that is awesome! wow. so it means i can still have access to raw photos right? or just the app? hmmn...
If you have the pro or max you have access to Apple pro raw, which is supported by LR
@@GaryHughesOfficial no. i dont have any of those. do you still have your 13 mini? is it too much to ask if you could download and install LR and just uninstall it anyways after? just to check if it supports RAW with the 2 lenses. thanks. if you do mind, never mind at all. :) happy day to you. :)
Lol, I am definitely going to leave that to someone else, but all I can tell you is that the Pro Raw is your best bet. If you are worried about RAW processing, the 13 Pro will be better for you than trying to workaround the mini. Good luck
You can enable the toggle in the settings for the camera app
Very cool
@@GaryHughesOfficial soooo… I was wrong :) it shows the option in ipados but not in the “standard” iPhone version. Sorry
Is the HDR still not available to turn on or off on the mini?
Haven’t updated to the newest OS, but so far no
I love my 13pro max snd and the battery is amazing.
So I hear! Glad you like it :)
Great review. I just found it and although it's a year old it helped me in taking a decision regarding the 13 Mini.
Granted, Apple has never advertised its cameras for professional use. Some skilled photographers use them for such purpose but not the majority. The elimination of the HDR option follows a software cost reduction. And, as you well said, the general public does not even notice that.
Regarding the zoom, Sandmarc has some pretty good glass. Their macro, fisheye, and zoom are excellent for iPhones.
Now, on a related note, I want to wait until September before I decide on the Mini. Who knows? Maybe they do launch a Mini 15 since so meany people like the Mini. My own reasons for a Mini are the size and I also want to force myself to use the phone for basic purposes. Mini can help.
Great thoughts, thanks for watching
Me from future...
Gotta wait for the next SE crow
what did you shoot this video with?
Canon R5 and some bits with the iPhone 13 as noted in the video :)
Hi I need suggestion on whether to get 13mini or 11pm I need a better battery life but I don’t want a poor camera 😢 thank you
The camera is great on the Mini, but the battery life is not great. I would recommend the iPhone 13, it’s a good balance and you can probably pick up a refurbished one for a good price
Can auto HDR be turned off in 13?
How long it's battery last while recording please tell
I don’t do that much video, but I would imagine that recording video would kill the battery pretty quickly
I'm far more interested in the video capabilities, how's the video on the mini?
I was actually thinking about doing a video on that too. So far it's pretty incredible. The cinematic mode does a better job at simulating DoF than Portrait mode does for stills. Kind of bonkers. I would still recommend the Pro if you plan to use the video more than casually as a creator. You will get a lot more from the battery and have more ProRes video options.
@@GaryHughesOfficial Thanks for letting me know
no worries
@@GaryHughesOfficial I just don’t wanna spend that money and carry that large of a Phone!! 🤦🏽♀️😩 Oh Apple…..
What do you mean ? I still have the option to set Smart HDR on/off on my 12 mini (ios 15.2)
Good to know, the 13 does not
hows the battery life? heard it's terrible
@@sidv4615 it is
13 Mini is better than the X, but if you want the best battery life (this part is in the video under “who I think it’s for”) the pro and max are excellent
@@GaryHughesOfficial he was asking for the 12 mini
If I am not a professional photographer but do everything on my phone(like you said your wife does)except gaming, watching movies which of the two (mini and Pro)would you recommend? So worried about the battery of the mini.
Mini battery life is much better on the 13 than the 12. But I got the pro for my wife and she loves it. If a small device is your priority, than the mini is the way to go. Otherwise the Pro is excellent
@@GaryHughesOfficial Tough decisions lol!Thank you for replying!
Of course!
@@7cheburashka Get the mini, I’ve had it for over a week now and the battery life is incredible and it’s so portable and powerful.
How long does the battery lasted ?
According to the reviews I am watching, the battery life is pretty impressive when compared to the R, R5, and R6.
great review, and so much better than the other 15+ I have watched in the last few days!! thank u.
Thanks very much, appreciate you watching!
"I don't think that it's the one for professional photographers" Yeah you don't say. It's a phone, not a professional camera.
So you don’t think that professional photographers might have different opinions or desires for the features on their smartphone camera? Because I am one and I do ;)
Bro for this price Samsung offers a telephoto and a ultra wide and a wide , and it has a pro mode so you can change settings
They sure do make great phones, no question. Kind of love being in the Apple system, though. In this case, the smaller phone is what makes it for me.
Thanks for the honest review! I have a 10(x?), too, and have been debating which version of the 13 to get. Thankfully I can carry a purse 😉
Just got the pro for my wife and it’s brilliant. Just about same size as the 10 and a really nice upgrade :)
@@GaryHughesOfficial so what? You got a 13 Pro, too?
Nice video btw 😉
No I got it for my wife. She does EVERYTHING on her phone where I am at my computer all day and my phone really sits there most of the time.
@@GaryHughesOfficial I understand. Well I’m not a photograph and I consume content mostly on my iPad or TV. I’m currently on a 12 mini and love the size. But I’m struggling so much what to get next when Apple quits the mini-lineup. The 6.1” models are too big for me but I also like to have the latest tech. Don’t think I could rock a 13 mini longer than let’s say 2024.
Nice video btw 😉
I’m stupid.
Already told you that I liked your video 😂
Two times is better than one 🤷🏻♂️😅
Wow, I can’t believe how bad the photo quality of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is… My 4 year old Google Pixel 2 XL takes way better pictures. I also own a real full frame camera, that I now use more than ever since the photos of my 13 PM looks so bad. They are oversharpened and blurry at the same time (which is a bad mixture), have a strange watercolor effect, are way too overexposed and the skinetones are a joke. Why on earth would they release something as bad as that and not let us turn off hdr? I am speechless. You definitely have a point.
I find the quality to be really excellent under a lot of lighting conditions, but the HDR just makes it look so weird a lot of the time. Hoping for a change in the next iOS update
@@GaryHughesOfficial *fingers crossed!!*
I have a pixel 3a and 13 pro max, and I totally agree with you about the picture quality! What you described here about 13pm is spot on! It's like over-sharpening oil painting... especially indoor. And the face looks flat and lack of 3D... Really bad... picture quality from pixel 3a is much more dedicate and real.
iphone 13 mini has a better & clearer photo & videos...i use the iphone mini for my music videos
That’s pretty cool! It’s very capable in the video department for sure
i really regret switching iPhone 13 mini from iPhone 11 Pro. I missed the telephoto lens.
It really is hard to get used to, but I do love that it's small
My wife wants this phone ... sending her this video. :)
Bobbi will probably be fine with it, it's a great camera overall. I think that it's important for people who rely on the phone for what they create (especially for work) what the differences are.
Great video tho
Appreciate it
In the market for the IPhone upgrade from the X. Thanks for the info
No worries
Thank you Gary for the time and effort to produce and to upload this insightful presentation. Just one suggestion. Like visiting a restaurant, it would be uncommon for the waiter to ask for feedback, subscriptions and for comments on the meal and the service right at the entrance of the eatery, waiting to be seated. Right at then end would be appropriate and in your case not required at all. Anyone, stimulated by your videos would seek you out for forthcoming presentations, regardless. There are CZcams influencers who never ask for approval, still having amassed a subscriber base of 15m and more. Just a thought.
Thanks for taking the time for this thoughtful reply, I appreciate it. I will take on what you have suggested and give it some thought. I have to weigh it against a few things. First, if you go back to the beginning of any of the big CZcams channels, you will see them asking for subscribers in their early videos. As a channel grows, especially in to tens or hundreds of thousands, the growth becomes exponential as your videos are still out their getting views. If my channel is any indication, a channel with 100k subscribers, if they are making good content, will be collecting 200-500 new subscribers a day, without having to try that hard. Once the ball is rolling, you don't really need to ask anymore, the numbers start to gain critical mass. That being said, you will see any big CZcamsr, no matter how many subscribers they have, asking for subscribers when they near a milestone. More often, though, you will see other CZcamsrs asking for them on their behalf on other channels.
The other part of this is when to ask. According to all the data I have, almost nobody watches an entire video. This video, for example, has an average watch time of four minutes, which is actually pretty darn good. That number drops a ton when you look at younger viewers to about 2 minutes. I can track exactly how many subscribers each video brings in and, all things being equal, you get half as many people liking and subscribing if you don't ask at the beginning.
I hope to be at the point where I don't need to worry about asking in the future, but in the meantime, I have started to add time codes to the videos so that people can skin the intro and get right to the review if they want. That and keeping the pitch brief will probably be the way I go for now.
Thanks for watching!
Here’s a thought for you. Your opinion and analogy are completely off the mark. I often like videos when asked to because I understand the ridiculous amount of work it requires to produce a high quality video and I want to show my respect and appreciation. I would never try to find fault in something that was free to consume.
fair point indeed. It's free!
possibly iOS 16 could change the flaws of ur choices ?
That would be great :)
I still use ip 13 mini for 2.5 years to make video with moment lens. It's still good. It's depend on your skill
Yep! Still have mine :)
Hopefully Apple crates iPhone Pro Mini that’ll be perfect!! 😍
Fingers crossed!
I'm getting this because of the 0.5
Lots of people feel the same, for sure.
@Danno.no, the mini has 1x and .5, different set of lenses. So no 2x :(
5:19 Well you should get the pro models then.
Nah, too big :)
@@GaryHughesOfficial the last small model is xs I guess
Yes, I’m a little disappointed the mini might be done :(
The first iphone SE was the best small iPhone of all time.
Never had the pleasure but I'm glad you like it!
For fun, it works.
No smartphones should really be used over a professional camera for professional photography.
Interesting though that phones have been used to shoot magazine covers, film commercials, and been used in large scale commercial advertising for years now. I don’t personally use a phone in my work, but I do look for different things in a smart phone camera than someone who isn’t a pro photographer. That’s really what this video is about.
also coming from an X, the telephoto is a deal breaker, i’m so used to it
Yeah I miss it, for sure
Going over your dislikes, it sounds like your issues are not with the iPhone 13 Mini itself but with iOS.
One of them, yes. Remember the camera setup on the mini with the 1x and .5? That is a big dislike for me as opposed to the 2x camera the iPhone used to have. Hey, thanks for watching?
100%
:)
sounds like sony xperia 5ii and 5ii would be better phone for you maybe
All in all the advantages of staying in the Apple system outweigh what I don't like about the camera, but I will check them out, thanks!
The front camera sucks it’s like that of an X
It’s a litter better than X but not as big an improvement as I had hoped
You should have titled the video differently, the iPhone 13 has the exact same camera
If you mean the 13 has the same camera as the 13 mini, sure, you're right. But it's quite a bit different than the 13 pro or pro max, both in hardware and software. Thanks for watching?
For me this is the phone of the decade😊
It’s a pretty great one for sure
I don't consider mobiles professional cameras anyway, the lens are just too small for high quality.
This isn’t really about that, just a perspective on how photographers might choose to use their phone cameras differently than the average person. That being said, there are now countless magazine covers, music videos, commercials, and films all shot with phones these days :) thanks for watching!
From the very moment I held the Mini 13 I immediately was overcome with an intense desire to buy it, that feeling persisted into the next day so I started looking at prices and reviews and finally the spell was broken when I realised it doesn't have a headphone jack. It reminded me of the kind of company Apple is, which is arrogant beyond belief to the point of contempt for their customers. Even after paying over a grand on a phone and knowing full well most of their customers want a headphone jack they refuse, just like most of their customers still need usb3 for their laptops, even though it creates millions of extra tonnes of E waste.....All to milk more profit...I will keep my money, the flag ship phone is a suckers game.
Plenty of people feel the same as you, others argue that they push the market forward like killing Flash, making optical media irrelevant, and ignoring Ethernet. I can see both sides. Truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
You can move the market forward without alienating your customers, you can keep usb3 around until usbC does become the new adopted standard. You can keep the headphone jack until wireless is ubiquitous. Its not an "either" "or" equation unless of course your Apple then its "either" get rid of Usb3 "or" we can't increase our profit margins into the stratosphere.
Sure, there is a balance there.

Perhaps iPhone 12 mini is better?
I don’t think the actual camera itself is better, the specs show that. But it does still allow you to switch off HDR (I think). It might be worth holding on to the 12 for people that have it, though.
That's there, however some tend to remark the 12 mini has a bit of pleasant colour texture in photography, perhaps it is subjective in thought.. thank you Mr.Gary, very kind of you to reply..
No worries
Booo love my 13 mini is as good as the pro models
Love mine too, but being stuck in HDR mode all the time…
You’re complexly right about the size of phones. I have a 13 mini and I consider it a little too large. There’s no need for it. It has a larger sceen than the 6plus/7plus/8plus.
Why? How about something much more pocketable and I can reach the entire screen with one hand? Something the size of the 5s but with the edge to edge screen of current phones.
Unfortunately, at the moment small devices just aren’t in fashion.
So if you can make a living from photos 📷, then Apple 🍎 wants you to invest in the Pro model.
Just business
I'm not totally sure that Apple has pro photographers in mind when they design a phone, but rather just typical end users. That being said, they are great tools for image-making with a lot of nice features. Thanks for watching!
color is ridiculous as the phone goes in a case
Aha, yes that’s true. Unless you get the mag case from Apple that is the same exact color :) it seems to be important to people, doesn’t it? Why else would they make them in colors at all? Thanks for watching
Me watching this while owning a Canon R6: 📷🗿📱
Camera Easter Island Phone?
Give feedback to apple company itself
Good idea
Love smart HDR.
There is an excessive amount of drama in the world… 😂 saying that they disabled your ability to add more useless drama, makes me happy 👌
Well alright then
Colour matter a great deal to me. I absolutely love the 12 pro and 13 pro blue colours. Sooooo amazing. That’s why I went with 13 pro.
12 and 12 mini colours were so much better than the 13 and 13 mini.. the choice disappeared. The only 2 colours - blue (okay), and pink (really nice).
I would suspect that Apple attempted to make the colors more interesting on the more expensive models so that people would pony up and buy them. Looks like it worked in your case :) glad you like the colors
@@GaryHughesOfficial it’s quite interesting that in the video you say how much better are the colours of 13 and 13 mini vs pro phones (if colours matter to you, you want regular or mini 13).. I disagree and say how much I love the pro colours. And to that you say your theory is Apple intentionally makes colours better on the pro phones. (Opposite to what you stated in the video).
😆 if you don’t stick to what you are saying,… there is no integrity in your words.
(Although since I wrote the comment, I got blue 13 mini for my wife, and in reality it’s better than in the photos. Still love my 13 pro blue though. 13 mini blue is great too).
@@maxroman2010 I don't think it's the opposite to say that Apple intends to put the most popular colors on their more expensive models, it just so happens that I prefer the color line up on the cheaper ones. I stand with my integrity intact, lol. Thanks for watching!
@@GaryHughesOfficial So your “if that matters to you” is only referring to “if it matters to you which colour I prefer, I prefer regular 13”? 😂 ah the fear of making statements and lack of self-worth.. 🙏
You are welcome for watching))) not sure what’s good in it for you) but as long as I can help 👍
@@GaryHughesOfficial oh and sorry for picking at the little thing. I think I was under stress when I was watching your video. Work.
Iphone school of photography will say something about it,… u gotta knw what ur doing on ur weapon lol
Funny enough, I have gotten to be able to understand better and anticipate what the phone camera will do in different situations and I've warmed to it a bit.
When you say photographers… you mean that in the very broadest sense of the word don’t you. Photographers use a camera.
lol, really I mean serious enthusiasts and professionals
I made the mistake purchasing the mini realizing the focus shot is hot garbage, my Xr can take better close ups
Not the strongest part of the camera
If you want photos go Sony
As in, Sony mirrorless cameras or a Sony phone?
A phone is never good for professional photographers....
You misunderstand, this isn’t about using a phone for professional photography, it’s about how pros might use a phone differently than someone who isn’t :)
Calling all Photographers! Use a Camera when practicing photography, that is all......
*Morpheus Voice* What if I told you that your phone IS a camera?
If you a professional photographer are you really relying on your iPhone to take pictures? Somehow I don’t believe that.
Hey Ryan! I have had this comment a couple of times so here’s the deal: no, most professionals don’t rely on their iPhone for professional work (let’s not include millions of creators who do) but skilled photographers do approach photos differently than the average person, and the camera most of us always have is the one in the phone. Having a camera phone (and software) that allows you things like more manual control and portrait focal lengths make taking photos with your phone more interesting and useful to someone who knows how to take advantage of those features. Market research shows companies over and over again that the camera is the number one consideration of a huge percentage of consumers when they choose to upgrade their phone (along with battery life). Does your average person care if they get an optical zoom? Probably not. Does a photographer? I think so. Thanks for watching.
I thought that a real photographer would use a real camera for their professional work 🤔
Yes, Herb. They do.
It is not meant for professional photographers because.... IT IS A PHONE NOT A CAMERA. Everybody is a photographer these days.
But professional photographers use their phones differently and want more control. Despite the fact that countless magazine covers, ad campaigns, commercials, and even tv shows and films have been made with phones, I do not recommend the iPhone as a replacement for a professional camera. It is, however a great tool in that most of us have in our pockets when the moment arises. I hope you watched the whole video for context and understand that that’s what I meant :)
In case you don’t know, Sony the expert of pro cameras said that smartphones will replace the dslr cameras in the next 3 years !
Maybe not for everything but, practically speaking, they have already replaced camcorders, point and shoot cameras, and DSLRs for most people.
You don’t buy it if you’re a photographer anyway 😂
Umm, you don’t buy a phone if you’re a photographer?
@@GaryHughesOfficial they’re good as a backup camera but usually legit photographers have legit cameras and don’t use a phone for weddings or photoshoots. I’d be disappointed if I paid good money for wedding photographer and he or she showed up with a iPhone 13 mini 😂
Yes I agree. But that’s not at all what this video is about. It’s about how photographers use their phones differently and might want more control when taking personal photos, not about photographers using a phone for their professional work. Incidentally, though, the covers of dozens of famous magazines have been shot with phones (mostly as a gimmick, I think).
@@GaryHughesOfficial i was just going by the title.
If you say so, thanks for the feedback :)
Everything he said is very misleading cause as a pro photographer as a daily job this is the best iPhone 13 for photos. So not always very honest! Do research cause these CZcams people are just his opinion which is not relevant. Lol one comment on telephoto is weird cause what if you don’t own a telephoto for your camera so see not always honest.
You got me! I am trying to convince people not to buy one (even though I love and still use the phone). I’m pretty sure you missed the point of the video, Lance.
Who the hell will get IPhone 13 mini if you are a professional photographer even the reviewers i saw didnt even mention his possibility at all. Only 1 year old will do that
You seem nice.
@@GaryHughesOfficial naah just realistic most of them are saying if you are into photography go with the pro if you just a casual user go with the non pro
It all depends on what your priorities are, sure. Even with the shortcomings in the camera, I still enjoy the mini. Plenty of photographers I know wouldn’t if they bought it, hence the video. Thanks for watching
@@GaryHughesOfficial also it will depends on the budget most of the people who has $ will not care if they will not maximize the feature of pro but for some i guess the wise option is to go iphone 13 mini or the standard. Hehe also age is a factor hehe a younger me will go for the pro max in a snap but as we grow older we focuses on needs not the wants
Pro, using a smartphone 🤣
So you don’t own one? Lol, did you watch the video
@@GaryHughesOfficial I found this video because I just recently bought a 13 mini. The way you titled the video made me laugh. I'm just a photography enthusiast but to me if a phone has a good camera, that's just a bonus. I wouldn't use a phone camera for anything serious.
Photographers should buy a camera, not a phone...
Solid point, but photographers also own phones, and they might want the more capable camera ;)
Photographers dont shoot with phones, they shoot with cameras, you should know that
Incorrect. Photographers shoot with whatever they have on hand :) (in Morpheus voice) what if I told you… your phone IS a camera
@@GaryHughesOfficial you're lying! dont you dare destroy my faith
Funny enough, I just recorded a video with Vanessa Joy as part of her Budget Photography Challenge and I used this phone. As much as I complain, the results surprised me. Follow her and that video should be out soon.
Professional photographer don’t use phones to take photos 🤦♂️ ….this video is null and void.
Well, I gotta disagree on a technicality. Loads of magazine covers and articles are being shot with phones these days, but I do take your point. It's not a stretch to say that professional photographers will want different things and be more discerning about the features of a camera phone than the average user. That's what the video is addressing :) Thanks for watching, though!
@@GaryHughesOfficial sure, there are many articles and covers being shot with phones, but it’s deliberately done to showcase those phones. No “professional” photographer rocks up to a shoot with an iPhone.
Again, you are mostly right. Plenty of creators are making great photos and videos with phones, though (and making a living doing it). I wouldn’t use a phone on a professional shoot, probably, but my knowledge and skill set as a pro makes me approach my phone camera differently. For example, wanting more manual control. Many times it’s the only camera I have with me. This video isn’t about using a phone as your pro camera, it’s about how pro photographers approach their phone ma differently because they are photographers :)
How can someone even call himself a photographer using smartphone 🤔😒
Hmmm. Well I guess if you mean "how could a professional photographer use a phone for commissioned work?", then many might agree with you. That being said, many HUGE magazine covers have been shot with phones in the last few years, but maybe that's a gimmick. Either way, I am a firm believer that a great photographer can make use of any camera that's at hand, including a phone. In the case of this video, it's really not about that, though. It's about people who are creators at heart who will want a phone with more robust features to shoot with when their regular gear isn't convenient. As an aside: I see your point, if it were 2008. A camera is a camera, and each one has a different use case. Plenty of creators, influencers, brands, and yes, photographers create stunning work with modern smart phone cameras. Maybe consider challenging yourself with a personal project and see what you can create, it might be fun! Thanks for watching :)
@@GaryHughesOfficial PERFECTLY SAID!
why profesional photographers buy a phone to take pictures ???
smart phones got smarter and smarter and people got stupid and stupid ....
Well, let me tell you. Any photographer considers the camera performance when buying a new phone. That’s just how things are in 2022, amigo. Thanks for watching!
Ok, so if you're a "professional photographer" I would sure as hell hope you're using something other than a smartphone anyway. I mean, WTF? What a bizarre statement to make.
Lol, did you watch the video? The video is about how photographers use their cameras differently and want different things from the functionality than someone who isn’t a photographer. Despite the numerous amounts of magazine covers and commercial shoots shot on phones these days, no, I don’t recommend that professionals use a phone over a professional camera.
