      I don't have tv in my student house! We just use a HTMI cable to our laptops & stream Netflix! The only magazine I receive is National Geographic - I love reading the physical copies but I'm thinking of switching to the digital copy.
      Fab video as always! From Midlands UK 😊 it's about -3°C here 😅

      I had to smile about you not having a pocket knife. I personally don’t know any single person having one, haha! I am not owning the most of your listed things, even gave away my computer couple of years ago. We are using built in GPS, and I would be swearing about the robot vacuum cleaner, especially having a cat - every time it surprises my with the quantity of collected dust. Greetings from Luxembourg!

      Same here! I have 2 clocks plus a watch. Love not having to pick up the phone to look at the time. It’s too addicting when I pick it up and see all the notifications; I’ll inevitably get sucked in.

    • @mcverstappen

      I have two clocks as well, one in my living room, one in my kitchen. The one in my kitchen is made of a tin plate (seems it was common in Belgium decades ago) that I thrifted on Marketplace. When you’re cooking pulling out your phone to know the time might not be the easiest thing to do.
      Clocks are ones of the few decorative items with an actual purpose.

  • @Huggible11

    I still do own an alarm clock. My reasoning though is to keep my phone out of the room. Have a strict no phone in the bedroom policy. I also enjoy having my alarm go off a bit early so I can then listen to the radio for the weather and traffic update before I get up and start getting ready for work. My alarm clock is over 10 years old.

    Yes, thank you, being minimalist doesn't mean you should BUY minimal clothes, use what you have is the point of minimalism. I really get mad when people ask me why I don't dress minimal, it's a style, what I'm trying to do is a better life style not a better fashion style.

    • @AshlynneEaton
      @AshlynneEaton  Před 3 lety +3

    • @aelyndorren6770
      @aelyndorren6770 Před 3 lety +4

      Yeah, I agree with you.
      And minimalism is relative, btw. I have quite a lot of jewelry (mostly earrings), but I really love each of those items and wear them almost all of the time. But there also are people who don't wear jewelry at all, so they don't need any, but they may own some other things that I don't like and don't need. Minimalism is also not a game, so all of those "you're not minimal enough" or "my lifestyle is more minimal than yours" are so stupid, honestly :D People tend to make a competition out of everything...

    I never thought about having a GPS until my dad bought one for me as a gift--it's actually really nice to have for long road trips so you don't drain your phone battery & waste data (assuming you don't have unlimited data). Also you can map your route in advance which is nice if you want to avoid major highways and interstates in certain areas.
    Not something I think I would have ever bought myself but I'm so glad I have one.

    • @sunnywang7625
      @sunnywang7625 Před 2 lety +1

      Agree. And a GPS is quite useful if someone goes off the grid quite often (visiting a national park etc.) where cell service is little to none. It's a hassle having to download all those maps on my phone before a trip because I know I will lose cell signal at some point.

    Love my cast iron. When well seasoned they are easy to clean. And they are durable. I've had the same skillets, which came from rummage sales, for over 25 years while I've been thru probably 7 or 8 non stick skillets. Currently, I only have the cast iron. I also have clocks in every room. Our kids don't get phones until they are older but do need to know the time.

I originally got one because I worked a job, that required driving to really really remote areas where I wouldn't have cell-service. Love this! I do own a robot vacuum. I have a dog that sheds like crazy and I'm super allergic to her dander. So, for the sake of not having constant back pain from vacuuming daily, I use the robot vacuum instead. On a weekly basis, I go through with a regular vacuum to get in the corners and areas the robot doesn't reach. I don't think I would own one if I didn't have a pet, though. Great video!

    I know everyone swears by the Instant Pot, and I was like you! A total skeptic lol I figured “it just does what my oven and stove can!” But someone got me one for my wedding, I avoided using it for a year (I was intimidated by it being a pressure cooker and I swore it would be more trouble than it was worth) and OH MY GOSH do I regret waiting to use it.. it saves so much time! Normally I would have to simmer a pot roast in the oven for several hours but now it takes less than an hour and a half.. I no longer have to prepare hours in advance to make anything because the Insta pot does it in half the time or less and just as tender and tasty 😋

    I *am* one of those people who swears by an Instant Pot. BUT, I am also a mom of 3 who works part time out of the house. Using an IP allows me to cook meals from scratch in one or only 2 pots in a quicker amount of time than I could on the stove and with the oven. It also is a huge lifesaver in the summer time because I can make hot food for dinner without heating the whole house when I turn on the oven. There are so many meals I make in it that would take 3-4 times longer to make in a regular way that takes me just a few minutes. That time save is priceless for me.
    I also have a robot vacuum. BUT (again with those, lol) I have 3 kids, 2 dogs, and 2 cats. Sweeping their pet hair and dust and crumbs everyday is a time sucker. Instead, when I go to work during the day, I tidy up the floor of big items, block off any rooms I don't want it to sweep, and star the Roomba. When I get home 5-6 hours later, the main floor of the house is swept clean of pet hair, crumbs, and big dust bunnies, and when I do a thorough vacuum on the weekend, I get the rest of the stuff the Roomba didn't pick up. It saves me having to spend a lot of time cleaning daily, and again, as a busy mom, that is priceless.

I feels so nice to know, that the floor is clean both around the bed - but especially under the bed. I am super allergic to dust, and we tend to get a really dusty bedroom for some reason. So the robot really helps in that occasion! I would never vacuum under the bed with our normal vacuum every day - to much work.

    I didn’t see the value in an Instant Pot until I bought one and committed to learning how it works. But now I love it. You can cook things much more quickly and make them more flavorful, and there’s a big time savings in “setting and forgetting” rather than having to constantly check and stir.
    My robot vacuum is definitely a luxury, but I love putting it on a schedule and letting it sweep up the daily dirt for me. Good for people who don’t have the time or discipline to commit to sweeping/vacuuming regularly.

    1. I do have a clock and use it regularly.
    2. I don’t have a mouse either, I likewise have a laptop and feel no need for one.
    3. I don’t have any cast iron cookware either.
    4. I have 1 blazer that I wore to a funeral - tempted to declutter it but I only just bought it - hmmm what to do?
    5. I have some makeup remover products but I’ve had these for ages! I’m currently in the process of using them up and won’t be repurchasing them 👍🏻
    6. I don’t have any of the kitchen gadgets either.
    7. I don’t have an Apple TV/Amazon fire stick either.
    8. I do have a bronzer but only 1.
    9. I don’t have any subscriptions either.
    10. I don’t have a GPS, I just use the maps on my phone.
    11. I do have cable TV and use it daily.
    12. I don’t have a pocket knife.
    13. I have no work out equipment.
    14. I don’t have an instant pot.
    15. I don’t have a robot vacuum.

    Great list Ashlynne. I felt similarly about cast iron too before my husband who is a chef brought one in the home for baking bread. Years later, switching to a cast iron pot and personal sized skillets helped me eliminate all the non stick cookware I had to keep rebuying when they got scratched every few year. Now my husband and I own a small stainless steel pot for boiling water a big lodge cast iron pot with lid and 2 cast iron skillets for making pizza and things that need to be flipped. All other cookware (including baking sheets) left the house and it is wild to think that these 4 cooking pots and pans that I will have for life.

      The cell phone is the single use item I have not owned for 5 years now. I found I can do everything at home on my laptop. And when I go somewhere I just have to be on time because I can't tell anyone I'm running late. I found that one phone between my husband and I is enough (and honestly I might only ask to use his phone maybe once or twice a year). All other messages or calls or looking for directions can be done on my laptop. :) At first it felt weird to leave the house without a phone, but it is so liberating to head to work or to do something fun without feeling like I HAVE to bring the phone.

    A Roomba is one of my favorite gifts that I've purchased for myself. I have a cat and need to keep her fur and dust to a minimum. A Roomba allows me to keep dust and fur and sneezing under control without having to spend time vacuuming multiple days a week. I still do own a "standard" vacuum for the corners and hard to reach places, but I'm glad I can spend my free time doing something other than cleaning. Definitely with it for me 🙂

    Ashlynne - Like you, I've decluttered many single-use items in my house or never owned them in the first place. An exception for me, though, is my GPS. Like you, I thought my cell phone's built-in GPS would be sufficient but I travel a lot and I am often in the middle of nowhere. I've found that my cell signal will get dropped in many of those places but my GPS will often continue to carry a signal and help me find my way. Once cell coverage is better in those "middle of nowhere" places, I will gladly ditch my GPS. Love your videos! TFS

    Instant pots and roomas are great if you have some health problems :) For me, being chronically ill, the roomba is a lifesaver. I have a cat that sheds all year, and the roomba takes care of most of that. Instead of vacuuming twice a week, I can now vacuum maybe once every two weeks. An instant pot is something I would have if I lived by myself. I don't have the energy to cook for long, so just chopping and adding ingredients and then waiting would be perfect.
    I think many (healthy) people forget that you can be a minimalist with some extra items to make life easier, and sometimes I wish people would understand that having a roomba doesn't make me lazy, it makes it possible for me to do more important things with my limited energy :) So I choose to have some extra items in my house, to make my life better.
