    I think a part of me died when you said that you could set a glass on top of a book one stead of a coaster. 😫 I am not a coaster person either but I love my books way too much to be setting wet glasses on them haha.

      I also love books but I have one I always put glasses and mugs on. It is for my work, it has slippery cover, it hasn't get dammaged (but I wouldn't be very sorry if it did). For some time I've also used some random catalogue I was given as a "coaster"

      I only use coasters on my wooden table, everywhere else I use books as a heat protector for tea / coffee 😂 And I never got any of them wet

    I own an instapot, crock pot, vita mix, blender, immersion blender, and food processor and use them all! I eat mostly plant based and never red meat so all of these get heavily used. I do have a storage pantry so they get housed there.

  • @Shadeadder
    @Shadeadder Před 4 měsíci +62

    I am the opposite! I have a food processor but not a blender, because I almost never make smoothies. I have a very low-profile stick immersion blender instead for when I need to blend a soup or the rare smoothie. I got a stand-mixer because I knew I would use a lot of the specialty attachments - pasta roller, meat grinder, ice cream bowl, etc., so for me it's actually space saving to have one machine to do all that. Minimalism is all about knowing what YOU need for your specific lifestyle. 😊

    It’s crazy how minimalists all view priorities differently. I have coasters because I love my wood table and don’t want it ruined. I have a Kitchenaid on my counter but bake breads with yeast and not sourdough because I hate the extra tools you need for sourdough. My cookbooks are in a cupboard and yours are showing. That would drive me crazy. I use metal sponges and I have a sink storage for them because I don’t want it sitting directly on my sink. It’s pretty funny!

      Same!!! And I have a pressure cooker, it's wayyy quicker for beans, braised meats, stew etc. so it's more economical. And I don't own those water bottles/to-go cups that people seem to love in the us 😅 I'm not sure why she doesn't just use a glass as she is at home

      You honestly only need a dutch oven as an extra. I have my starter in a normal glass pantry jar, proofing bins you can replace with stainless steel bowls or small pots even if you wanted. Otherwise you don‘t need anything really.

    I’ll never give up my stand mixer. SO much more versatile than anything else I own.
    Also, you have the little oven from OurPlace….on your counter in most IG stories. That counts as an air fryer, toaster oven, etc.

    • @ariannatartan5449

      @@ariannatartan5449Sure, but it was just on her counter like last week. It just makes it sound like she doesn’t use such things. I know if a brand wanted to send me something and I knew I wouldn’t use it, I would politely decline.

    Great video! I'm getting married this year and a question I often get is "Where is your registry?" or "Why don't you have a registry?". My simple answer is that I really don't feel the need to own more stuff. I have a couple kitchen appliances and a few home goods that I have thrifted or gotten used from my family members. I also live in a small apartment that my fiance will be moving into and there really is not much room for more things. Instead I have a "home fund" that people can contribute to so when we do have a bigger space or I do feel that I am lacking something I can buy it out of necessity! Thanks for sharing your process of separating "need" from "want"!

      You can exchange what you have for higher end or more durable alternatives. For example I had dishes when I got married, but they were from Walmart, so I got like really nice norataki plates that we still use 8 years later and probably will use for 30 more years

    • @heather6404

      Got married almost 3 years ago now and we didn't have a registry. We didn't need anything or if we did, we just bought it. We told people that their gift of attending our wedding was enough. Now people still gave us cards with money but we didn't have to bother with it all when we got back from the honeymoon.i think it really benefits couples who aren't living on their own yet and don't have anything. Congratulations!

    Hey Sarah, I would LOVEEEE it if you would consider doing a video on stainless steel pan care. I’m currently trying to steer away from nonstick, but I feel that stainless steel requires more maintenance to keep clean. Maybe it’s simple and it’s just me but I would love to see how you take care of yours!

    • @braria9855
      @braria9855 Před 4 měsíci +3

      Hi 👋🏻 fellow anti-non-stick fella. (We have one for husband and I use it rarely for crepes and such but other than that I'm stainless steel friend!)
      1. Heat before adding oil for a bit
      2. Add oil and heat before adding food
      3. Add water (or flavour liquids - soy sauce, that unfinished prosecco from last night, worstesceshire, tomato passata, ketchup, balsamic,...) to low oil foods to avoid burning stuff
      4. If you want the crunchy darker golden (or browned delicious based on what spice mix you used) texture pour out the liquid into a saucer and let it kind of char for a bit near the end.
      5. This is also a mom hack: always remove all food while serving. I serve onto plates and then put all the rest into a glass container that we use as a serving bowl for seconds. It also goes to the fridge in this bowl once it cools, so no extra steps needed. And soak and scrub the pot. If it's only greasy with no stuck rice/burned moments, your dishwasher will gladly handle it for you after all, steel *can* go into the high temperature wash without leeching toxins ;)

    Stand mixer and food processor is my two top favourites. I do bread by hand and everything else in between these two machines. I love them and in my opinion a kitchen aid is a piece of beauty on the counter. ❤

    • @rachaelkumarasena678
      @rachaelkumarasena678 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Absolutely!! Stand mixer I use for baking and pasta making all the time and it is beautiful on my counter… I just got a food processor that I’m learning to use to hopefully make my life easier.
      I have a pressure cooker because cooking a roast in it in a short about of time is a life saver for my 16 year old as doing school pick up and working in an office eats into a lot of time. Also I want to start making my own yogurt in my pressure cooker. Breading making I do all by hand or use my stand mixer dough hook for extra kneading work of big batches like pizza dough.
      I think you Sarah you said it so well though, you need to assess what is useful in your life right now and that will look different for everyone.
      My goal is to use less plastic containers 🙏🏼💕

    I’m gonna say this and I don’t want it to come off as like being mean or anything but you have a lot of storage space in your kitchen like cabinetry wise, but understand that it is a very big privilege. I have a very small kitchen with not a lot of storage space in cabinets that close so things are out and it does feel cluttered but I don’t really have another option. Again I’m not judging I’m just saying be thankful that you have the space that you do in the storage space that you have.

    • @Faith-ly2yh
      @Faith-ly2yh Před 3 měsíci +4

      You don’t have to tell someone to be thankful.
      When she first renovated this kitchen, she consistently talked about being thankful. In fact they used to live in a trailer home.I have a closet sized kitchen too, but I don’t think everyone has to constantly mention their privilege when they have something more than I do.

    • @its.me.paisley
      @its.me.paisley Před 3 měsíci

      I get that your intention probably wasn’t to be mean. But there’s really no need to say all of this if thats the case. It’s okay to not have the same as others. And it’s never really seemed like she’s ungrateful. So perhaps if your intention isn’t to be mean, then just don’t say anything.
      And this is coming from someone who lives in a VERY small apartment.

    I love seeing how differently other people manage their kitchens! For me I definitely keep lots of duplicate items around because I do some INTENSE gardening and food preservation in the summer. My multiple large mixing bowls are used to haul gobs of fresh produce into the kitchen, my multiple cutting boards are often lined up as an assembly line, and my multiple large pots are usually either simmering a tomato sauce or plain water for blanching produce. Sure, I could accomplish all this with just one pot, bowl, and cutting board, but it would greatly slow me down during a season when I need to optimize my time! Not saying this to bash minimalism or anything! We all do minimalism differently and I like to think that by keeping around extra tools for growing and preserving our food, I can be more minimalist in other ways like grocery shopping and meal planning. I loved this video because it did get me thinking deeply about things I may or may not still need to keep around in my own kitchen.

    You can still use air fryer and use oil. I use air fryer and I either spray food with avocado oil before putting it in or put it on my food afterwards. I also use my instapot and crockpot a lot. It’s so convenient when you meal prep. I have been freezer prepping my meats and then thawing them out and cooking them either in instapot or crockpot. I could see it very beneficial for a big family like yours. You should definitely invest in those! I also love my recently purchased food processor, it’s so easy to shred cabbage for when I make sauerkraut, also I love shredding my own cheese.

    For me, I don’t have the bread maker. But bake bread often in my oven. But I do have two Stand mixers. One no name, and one Kitchen aid. I use them both often. I have a 12 person family. And often have guests over. Teen guests. And have four Teen children.
    All that to say,
    I do think if you like the instant pot when barrowing it. And are debating on getting a Slow cooker because you miss having one. The instant pot has a slow cook option. If you bite the bullet on another appliance I truly suggest the larger Instant pot with multi purposes. They even have one that has air fry lol. Yogurt setting. All the things. ❤

They're inexpensive so I bought enough to change out every day. I throw them in the washer along with other kitchen towels & air dry. They never smell & last a long time - I am still using those I bought in Sept 2020.

    I got rid of my InstantPot. It just wasn't for me. So I offered it up on a free community group and allowed another mom to have one to use. I do however have 2 stand mixers. Both a 5 qt tilt head and 6 qt bowl lift as well as almost all the attachments and they are used a lot. I don't make bread (GF due to Celiac and don't tolerate yeast) but use them for other things. I also have 8 Le Creuset pieces that again are used a lot as well as our multi clad stainless steel pieces. Love the versatility of them all. I also use glass containers. Oh and LOVE my Fiestaware pieces - plates, bowls, serving pieces, mugs, etc. Safe and made in America. And all the colors together are pretty.

      My kitchenaid stand mixer is my kitchen wirk horse. From kneading sourdough dough to beating cookie dough to grinding meat. It does everything. I also store it away due to limited counter space. I'm hoping to get the pasta maker attachment for it soon! In my opinion, the mixer replaces a lot of kitchen appliances.

      We have to have two fridges because of the amount of produce, particularly in summer we have and one small deep freeze. I'm not a big food preserver, because I know I probably won't eat it and/or cook with it. What we learnt from all the covid lockdowns we had where I live was to keep the garden up and we're fine. Because of food allergies, I couldn't rely on shops to have what i needed, because people who had no allergies would strip bare all the groceries for people like myself and we'd be literally left with nothing as we couldn't just buy whatever came in - so we adapted.

    Last year I cleared out so many gadgets and small appliances that my Ninja IQ and stand mixer could do, that cleared out about 2 large drawers and 2 large cabinets that allowed me to space out our bakeware and cookware. I have 5 Lodge cast iron pieces- 3 skillets, a Dutch Oven and one griddle, a Staub Dutch Oven, 4 All Clad Stainless Steel pots (2 are the same 1qt pots that I generally use a lot), 2 slow cookers, one dedicated to making my 2 Labs food. As for sponges, my hospital has Laboratory week and asked people to bring in common household items to test on- the sponge and SOS scrub pad had the most bacteria growth and the owners said they made sure to clean them really well the night before 🤢- I only use Norwex dish cloths and change them out every day just like my hand towels. I don’t own a bread maker or air fryer. You have convinced me to get rid of my plastic cutting boards, I have 4 wood ones in various sizes. I keep a folding dish rack as I don’t have a dishwasher at this moment but once the dishes are washed they are dried and put away immediately as is the rack. I am not one to keep anything in my counters except my coffee maker, electric kettle and stand mixer, everything is behind closed doors of a 24” pantry dedicated to my small appliances and bakeware and canisters. I keep only 1 dish soap brand in a bulk container and pour into the dispenser that is part of my sink- we use that for both dishes and handwashing at the sink, I keep a pretty pump bottle with hand lotion at the sink, all my cleaning cloths are Norwex and I make my own cleaning solutions with vinegar, Dawn, baking soda, Dr. Bonners plain castor soap, peroxide, rubbing alcohol citrus peels and essential oils which means I don’t have to have to have a closet or cabinet just for multiple and different cleaning products. For me, less is more, mostly non-toxic, reusable (we are phasing out ziploc bags and buying reusable stasher bags, glass snap loc containers and the Zwilling Vacuum Storage kit). All this isn’t because I am an eco zealot, but I am tired of waste and rebuying disposable stuff. We downsized a few years ago and when I was packing, I donated 3-5 of the same things I had accumulated over the years- cook and bakeware (I had 5 sets of each), 4 sets of dish ware and serve ware, hand mixers, 3 toasters, 2 blenders, an InstaPot we never used, gadgets, utensils of every kind, and let’s not speak of the towels and bedding and furniture in storage- we knew of 2 young couples just starting out and they literally furnished their apartments with all that stuff we had accumulated over 30 years. We are not minimalists in the purist sense but we have minimized to where we have kept only what is necessary or well loved and makes us smile (like decor items we have collected and still love and our now adult children’s artwork in frames).

    You've got to try a Scrub Daddy sponge! They contain colloidal silver (nature's antibacterial/antifungal/antiviral magic) which means they never smell and don't get nasty. They also turn hard under cold water for a stronger scrubber or soft under warmer water for more of a wipe. They last forever and don't get pilly when you're cleaning dough out of bowls or off utensils. Such a great kitchen tool that I never would have bought if someone didn't tell me how helpful they are!
