This is the scene that definitely made me feel like the writers really got what a game of D&D was like.
For me, it was the graveyard scene. My D&D group would have screwed up Speak with Dead in exactly the same way. 😂
Both great examples. My peak-D&D scene was when they abducted Jarnathan to escape prison for no reason.

I loved that the movie was written like a DnD session while also retaining the pace you would expect of an action comedy. It was a long time since i had so much fun at the theatre.

I love how the writers fully embraced the pure jank of D&D problem-solving. That feeling of, "I don't know if that was supposed to work, but it did!"
I have heard it argued that you should assume the characters are being played by gamers who know more than the characters do. The players are trying not to meta-game, but of course that's unavoidable, so sometimes the characters seem to know things that they really shouldn't know.
One of my favourite things about this movie is how the Hither-Thither rod was used (and abused) in the chaotically creative manner an actual DnD group would use it
It also makes it funnier when they couldn't get through the stone table because the portal was face down since it seems like an obvious DM choice to deny the players their improvised plan and while they still go after it.

Players obviously instantly jumping on the rod and trying to find all possible ways to abuse it and DM trying to hold them back to not make it to easy. :P

Something to appreciate in this scene. It's over 2 minutes long, NO dialogue and un-necessary exposition that you get in so many movies now where the characters are literally you telling you what they're doing while you're trying to watch it. Nope, the writers let the action and the scene speak for itself. We need more films like this where the scene lets the viewer enjoy it without talking it to death.
That wouldn't be equitable for the visually impaired though. (And if you think I'm joking, think again, that is a real factor in the way movies are produced.)

Actually audio description does exist, and would probably describe the scene pretty well, and would do it even better since it does not have to also include the dialogue that would be happening on top of describing everything that is going on
@@mylesleggette7520 sorry but not every story need to relayed with words, action alone speaks for itself. The problem with modern entertainment today is to deliberately given the minority privileges. But if given too much, now that's either a nuisance or just annoying to everyone else.

Apparently, no one except the directors knew what the hell was going on in this scene throughout the entire production until it was edited together.

and is totally something that some drunk group of D&D players theorized at the table at some point. Only difference is that everyone knows no one rolls well enough throughout a heist attempt to not get caught.
@@ShaggyRogers1 If this happend in DND, you can see the moments the failed rolls when they almost lost the paintain from the carriage's floor, but the DM was generous and didn't make them fail catastrophically.
Just watched it this weekend, this movie does not get enough credit. It was great.

The OGL bananarama stormshit was happening at the same time, the fans were pissed off, and obviously weren't feeling the connection to D&D that would have otherwise led to them going to see this movie. If the numbers are anything to go by, they all watched The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 2 (which launched around the same time) instead.

This scene alone was so damn well made and perfectly executed that it feels like something that would happen in a DnD game when everyone rolls and half gets passing rolls and the other half fails some rolls

That's the point... D&D players will understand such things ... But a curious movie goer wouldn't have a clue or understand.

@@darrinwebber4077I don't play DnD and I have no idea how the rules work but I went to see this with my family (who enjoy DnD) and I loved this scene. I think one of the things I love about this movie is that while there are plenty of references and jokes DnD players will get a kick out of, it's still a good standalone fantasy movie for someone who doesn't play the game or understand the rules.
A very cleverly thought out plan nearly done in by one bad turn of fate.

They nailed the “Ocean’s Eleven but in fantasy world” feel with this scene.

Lots of successes for the party, only fails for the DM.
Now admittedly the DM probably didn't put the DC's on the skill checks for the party too high, and most characters made skill-checks that they would likely be proficient in.
The DM skillschecks probably had a higher DC as the guards had no reason to suspect a threat to be underneath the wagon.

1:03 arguably one of the coolest shots in any fantasy movie
There's a lot of interesting camera work in this movie. The complete vertical orbit around Szazz Tam in the flashback stood out to me.
This is exactly the kind of convoluted but brilliant plan I could imagine the players taking like twenty minutes to come up with. Amazing.

I just played my first-ever game of DnD last night!! It was so much fun. I really surprised my DM by effectively using my paladin's divine sense to figure out that the church we were visiting was desecrated ground, but then I blurted that information out in front of the weird nun and immediately got us all yeeted into some pews. So six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Most underrated movie of 2023.. Watched it today, and I really really enjoyed the movie.. Why didn't I watch it in theatres?? Noone told me movie was this good!!
That first little fall through the portal then upright in the cart was really slick.
Sophia Lillis is so adorable as a druid
She is and a Tiefling too.

i started thinking this was some generic carriage robbery, then i watched an impressive plan, then i realised they were aiming for something greater than just some carriage

honestly this movie was totally underrated. this was so faithful adaptation of the dnd universe.
The shot at 1:02 alone is legendary, this movie encapsulates playing D&D so well
The ideia of the Portal in the painting is definitely something a DM would hear from a player, roll their eyes cringing, and later ask the player to roll just to watch when said player rolls a 20 😂
When the players exploit an item you gave them as a joke:
We did a christmas themed session once that ended with Santa giving us gifts, one of us got a broom of flying. You better believe that became the staple of all our plans
I had to watch this scene again to realize she uses her tail to restore balance and pull Simon away of the rock.
This entire scene was basically the writers going "you know the Portal games? What if you could place portals on moving surfaces?"
How did I not notice till now that Doric has a tail?

I think she's a tiefling right? Kind of a bummer she wasn't given the trademark yellow/red/purple skin color, but tieflings with regular human skin color do exist to be fair, they're just rarer.

Im so glad to have been playing DnD for a year before watching this movie. It makes you appreciate the big and little things about it.
If Volothamp Geddarn (the guy in the painting) ever appears in a sequel, Matt Berry should play him.
I'd say more Jemaine Clement to match that painting; he's the spitting image of him, gap tooth and all.

I want that Volo portrait
The portal physics of a particular moment there are mind-boggling. When the frame falls and Simon starts to be pulled through, it's because Doric is holding him and the frame is being dragged by the road; all good so far. But the other end of the portal is anchored on the ground, and Holga grabs his legs to start pulling him back through. This is where things get really weird for the frame-half of the portal. With Simon being dragged back through the portal, and Doric firmly holding Simon's hands, the picture frame would have to drag itself back under the carriage, even if Simon wasn't touching it. Nothing would be physically pushing it.
Either that, or the distance between Holga and Doric would just increase, so one would lose their grip or Simon would be torn in half, because the movement of the frame-half has no opposing force. Yes, this isn't what happened in the movie, because Simon was leaning on the frame; so, cleverly, the director bypassed the whole paradox.
Portals REALLY fall apart when you try to specify forces, inertia, and conservation of momentum unfortunately

Stand in a small creek with a gentle current. Take a hoolahoop and drop it into the water with you in the center. If the current was stronger, or the hoolahoop heavier, it would overtake your ability to stand.
Same concept here; the frame was light enough for it to be dragged as such.
@@Leoncroi No, nothing about that is the same concept. In your example, your body is resisting the hula hoop, and the weight of the thing makes no difference with the current anyway; hydrodynamics does.

The creativity of this scene alone is why it is criminal that this movie didn't make more in the box office.

This movie is just soooooooo spot on. Like it took my entire life time. But this is such a good movie and stays true to DnD as a whole.
The graveyard scene is probably the best example of failing a session successfully.

This was the most underrated movie for me in 2023. It was just such a fun and great film. I was smiling the whole time and I was never a D&D fan.
I think some people missed it either due to the awful 2000s movies or that it felt like an MCU movie but trust me it is really enjoyable.

This was the last movie i actually went to a theater to watch. it didnt really wow me, but looking at these clips shows how much thought an work went into it. this from someone who played D&D back in 1974

As a DM, if my players came up with something as good as this I'd be the proudest parent.
I am sure people have noticed it but never seen it mentioned in vids like "things your missed" but I am 99% the painting they use for the portal is of Volo, Author of Volo's guides in DnD Lore.
He sings a mean goblin war ballad, too.
I didn't expect anything from this movie, but it turned out to be the best entertainment I've experienced in front of TV this year
Just saw the movie, it was fun! Haha! Loved this portal stuff! And all the creative problem solving... My first D&D experience was Baldur's Gate 3 and I loved the connections within the D&D universe!
My favorite part is how technically this entire plan was unnecessary since Doric could've just wildshaped into a fly while holding the painting so it merges into her, left it inside the carriage and then wildshape again to leave easily. But the fact that they did it because it's more fun and they simply didn't think of the efficient solution is INCREDIBLY in line with the spirit of D&D. This movie rocks
Love how this scene captures getting nothing but winning rolls only for DM to exclaim "your plan works! But...."
The Hither-Thither Staff was proof thay the writers were familar with how D&D often plays out at the table.
It's hastily introduced to keep the plot going after the party gets into a jam the DM didn't plan for, then gets abused to hell and back in the most creative ways.

The staff has a limited reach, and when I first watched I thought there was an oversight int his and that it should not have worked, NOW I realized that it 100% works because in the last moment they disabled the other side of the portal, making it possible to reopen when in range again. STUPID ME
This is 100% a group of D&D players coming up with a goofy exploit involving a magic item and rolling just good enough for their hair-brained strategy to work.

This movie should have done much better. That bad blood from Hasbro and the SRD fiasco probably cut into the gross. It's easily the best D&D film and aside from Tolkien, it's among the best fantasy films of all time.
