    Real madrid beat liverpool to claim their fifth champions league trophy in 8 years, with carlo Ancelotti becoming the first manager to win the trophy 4 times. It caps of an incredible season for real madrid and a disappointing end to liverpools season, narrowly missing out on both the premier league and champions league. Today we’re going to be taking a look at the tactics behind the champions league final.
    The two teams adopted a very contrasting approach in the final, with Liverpool sticking to their typical aggressive vertical football but struggling to break down real madrids low block and deadly counter attacking football. This is also reflected in the statistics from the 90 minutes. Both teams lined up in their classic 4-3-3 formation with no variation in line-ups compared to their previous champions league fixtures. The first thing to note is the two teams average position throughout the match. Liverpool kept a much higher defensive line, often with Jordan Henderson pushing much further up on the right flank, with support from TAA. On the other hand real madrid kept a more standard shape throughout the match, with Benzema and Vinicius often staying further up the pitch to help with the teams counter attacks, a big part of their gamplan for the night. Possession was rather equal over the 90 minutes, but the xG shows how Liverpool had many more chances, with the biggest coming from Sadio mane in the first half and salah looking for the equalizer late on in the match. This is also a testament to Courtois man of the match performance, pulling off a number of world class stops to keep Liverpool at bay. Pressing intensity also clearly shows liverpools attempt at winning the ball back early, while real madrid had a much higher long pass share %, looking to directly bypass liverpools press and look for gaps either side of liverpools fullbacks who often pushed up on the flanks.
    So these stats show how Liverpool may had more opportunities, but after a shaky first 25 minutes, real madrid stuck to their game plan and never looked out of control for the remained of the match, and slowly started to frustrate Liverpool.

    Journalists are criticizing Modrics performance in the final saying he was to defensive and was too deep but as you mentioned the dropping deep by Modrić and Kroos was a tactical decision (probably Ancelotti'es) which broke Liverpools high press. This decision won Real a title.

      I remember watching the match and I told everyone there, Madrid chances of getting a counter will increase if Modric dropped back.
      Why?
      Whenever Modric pressed the Liverpool central defenders alongside Benzema, it left gaping holes in the midfield and posed all sort of questions.
      Kroos would have to vacate the wide position or half space to help Casemiro who's covering for Modric so Liverpool do not have a central overload. Now Kroos moving central meant Vinicius had to take up Kroos's former position which he didn't, that's why Henderson and Trent overloaded the right wing and right half space.
      Again, Modric being upfront meant momentarily they didn't have the numbers centrally, that's why Mane received a lot of deep passes from Thiago, but thanks to Militao for tracking Mane as false 9.
      The moment Modric dropped deep, their solidity was cemented. I don't know what those journalists saw or what match they watched.

      I'm a huge Real Madrid fan - 150% truth BUT to be fair the superior statement is interlinked with the flawless execution statement. Without execution a game plan means nothing haha. Liverpool had their plans and Real Madrid had theirs, difficult to compare the plan on a standalone basis, but Real Madrid executed their plan better and won.

    I think in the 2nd half, Klopp should've switched to 3-4-3 formation. Liverpool brilliantly marked Vini Jr in the first half with Ibrahima Konate and Mo Salah aid Trent to contain Vini but it's very hard to do that for the whole 90 mins. Klopp should've sub Matip for Hendo and Bobby for Diaz. Moved Konate to mark Vini and deployed Matip in a more central position. Matip is also a brilliant ball playing defender, he's also good at breaking and opening up the opposing team. Moved Mane to his normal left flank position and brought Bobby Firmino as normal no 9. Liverpool were really firing once they brought Bobby and he was really good and he opened up Real's defense on several occasions and found lil pockets. Trent would've been more free with moving up and be creative in the offense.

    • @kamaldeensalau4237
      @kamaldeensalau4237 Před 2 lety +3

      Chelsea thought they marked vini well until he struck, what you people don't understand will win some of the one on one battles against the best defender in the world will wait for the perfect chance or pass to finish off. That's how Madrid will have three chances and score two because they don't waste chances.

    • @johnnyjustice
      @johnnyjustice Před rokem +2

      Your entire scenario above sounds nice and plausible but (1) would still not guarantee a W; and (2) would need practice to implement. On (2), If Klopp had not anticipated this and prepared for this system beforehand he wouldn't execute it. I think that was the scenario in fact.

    Also nabi keita should have more time as he is able to pass through the lines and he is best in getting into the box

    The moment Modric and Kroos dropped deep to soak up liverpool pressure knowing that they are best player on the planet to keep the ball under pressure and to deliver it forward with pinpoint accuracy meant that Liverpool gegen press became ineffective and since liverpool were occupying all their focus defensively on Vini meant that any forward pass to Valverde would allow him to have more freedom upfront, Real Madrid can hurt you in many ways they always have more tools during the heat of the game to change everything, quality and experience with winning mentality all overwhelmed liverpool aggressive pressing but ineffective against low blocks, Valverde tormented Robertson physically, hendo and Konate were all on Vini to not let h have his go on Trent who is weak defensively while Van djik was occupied by Benzema this let Real Madrid right flank of Carvajal who nullified Diaz and even went forward with Modric and Valverde, they thought the danger would come from the left to the right but it was the opposite

    Klopp played like Madrid did in 2019 and won, the Gegen press is excellent in the league but in a 1 off much. The objective in a final is not to score many but do not concede at all cost, because when you do, breaking down the low block is not an easy task. Liverpool had an all out attack plan. Its the reason they lost. But Madrid were incredibly luck too because Varlverde was shooting and not really trying to find Vini IMO

    I felt a lot of people came into this thinking that Liverpool were massive favourites, but given Ancelotti beat Klopp with a same Everton team which barely survived relegation a year later… it seemed likely that he’d be able to do it with a Madrid side.

    This game showed me why Southgate still picks Walker over Trent for England. Trent is the best attacking right back in the world and probably the best crosser in the world but defensively he's a coin flip. I believe Trent would be so much better in a Fergie's United-like 4-4-2 formation taking the role of Beckham. For Liverpool he's exceptional but I can see why a defensive minded coach like Southgate wouldn't feel comfortable picking him over Walker.

In the end, you can win the league and UCL double while playing "boring" counterattack, or you can be entertaining but come two penalty shootouts away from being as trophyless as Man United. 330 minutes of finals, and their press was not good enough to score a single goal.
